  • Looking for papers about Solaris containers performance studies

    Hi everybody! I'm looking for papers about Solaris containers performance studies. Can you suggest me where to find them (if they exist...)? I tried to look at IEEE website and others similar but I didn't find anything. I'm preparing my master thesis on this topic with the aim to develop queueing network models and adopt them to the behavior of Solaris containers virtualization technology for capacity planning purposes. Every advice will be appreciated!

  • Etude for Solaris 9 migration? What about Solaris 9?

    Hi all,
    Need your advice. I'm made to understand that Etude is there to help users to migrate Solaris 9 onto the modern and cheaper hardware platform, but how about Solaris 9? Please advice.

    Most definitely a software question,
    thus outside the scope of this hardware Forum for Sun-branded servers.
    (It seems to be a Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 migration tool.)

    Netscape is not bundled with Solaris 7.

    Hi Lister
    Please provide more information on what you're trying to achieve. By the way, I'm in Perth and I've done some JES work out there at Curtin before - let me know if you'd like to get in touch! I'm available at tom.shaw [at] solidsystems.com.au
    In general, I see several inconsistencies here.
    1. I can't tell whether you're trying to use SSL or not. You have an ldapsearch using SSL and you have a certificate database but your ldap_client_file is using "simple" not "tls:simple". (You should try and get it working without SSL first though.)
    2. The objectclassmap entries look like they aren't needed.
    3. You haven't listed nsswitch.conf - are you using local files for passwd, group and shadow entries, or are you using LDAP?
    4. I'm not sure about the BindDN you have. I believe it needs to be the full DN, not just the RDN, and it needs to have the right ACI permissions.
    Useful information would be: the output of a command like "ldaplist passwd" (obviously with sensitive information censored), and the relevant lines of the LDAP access log. But again, I'm in Perth so let me know if you'd like arrange some more direct assistance.

  • Strange behavior about Solaris 10 11/06 x86 dhcp client

    Hi forumners,
    I can use the installed Solaris 10 x86 to access internet on my laptop at home, however, when I use my laptop running Solaris 10 at my working office I can not get onto internet.
    When I use "ifconfig -a" to check the interfaces, it shows me the ip address which is usually assigned by my at-home router. It means that the network interface is not updated by the on-going DHCP processing. Do you have any idea or suggest about what happening. Thanks.

  • Indepth information about Solaris Installation

    Hi,
    where can I find in-depth information about the installation
    process for Solaris (6, 7 and 8) on Sparc machines?
    for example I need to know:
    There seems to be a limit for the length of the parameter of the (OBP) boot command. How long can the parameter be?
    What actions does pfinstall while installing the system? What files are changed by pfinstall in /etc and /a/etc?
    Also I need some more information about the sysidtool programs.
    I alreay looked in the man pages, manuals and searched the sun websites (www.sun.com, docs.sun.com, etc.)
    TIA
    Bernd Schemmer

    The differences would be new features, documented in the Release Notes and README files.
    We don't document lists of, for example, bug fixes.
    The compilers are forward compatible in the sense that valid source code that worked with C++ 5.5 will continue to work with C++ 5.8, and binary files that were created by C++ 5.5 on Solaris 8 can be linked into a program that is built with C++ 5.8 on Solaris 9. (I say "valid source code" because we don't promise to duplicate old bugs.)
    Since you are moving to Solaris 9, I recommend using Sun Studio 12 (C++ 5.9) instead of Sun Studio 11 (C++ 5.8). Using Studio 11 is necessary only if you need to build on and generate code for Solaris 8.

  • About  solaris 10

    Hi,
    I am doing research about multicore computers.
    Our group got a SUN T5120 server with solaris 10 OS.
    The server processor is Ultra-sparc T2 processor with 8 cores.
    I am trying to run CPU2000 benchmark on it.
    But, Now , I got a problem.
    I divide the 64 virtual processors into 8 groups, and each group has 8 virtual processors .
    I assign 11 CPU2000 floating point benchmark programs to each group so that the total work
    load is 11 x 8.
    I need to make sure that all processes of the benchmarks only run in their assigned group.
    I have to use "psrset" command in "super user " mode to divide the virtual processors.
    And then I designed a shell script to run CPU2000 benchmarks as a normal user.
    But, I got :
    $ ./myjob.sh
    /usr/sbin/psrset: cannot exec in processor set 1: Not owner
    I also have studied RBAC (Role Based Access Control) and set up a role for my user name in
    order to run psrset -e (with optional arguments) in the specified processor set.
    In this way, I want to make sure that the command process and any child processes of the
    benchmarks are executed only by processors in their assigned processor set.
    my command :
    psrset -e 1 runspec config=sun_sparc_solaris size=ref noreportable iterations=1 swim
    And, I have added the followg line in the file /etc/security/exec_attr
    Runshrc:suser:cmd:::/usr/sbin/psrset:uid=0
    I have also tried to use "pbind" , I got the same error.
    Would you please help me ?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

  • About Solaris 10 release

    Someone know what is the meaning of the last numbers/letter on the /etc/release?
    Example: (I'm talking about the 07b)
     Solaris 10 10/08 s10s_u6wos_07b SPARC
    Copyright 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
    Use is subject to license terms.
    Assembled 27 October 2008
    Thanks in advance

    Why would you care?
    Thats the version info it gives for a Solaris 10 10/08 aka Solaris 10u6 installation.
    You'll never see one with anything different there.
    So what does it matter?

  • An easy question about Solaris

    Hi All,
    I'm new in Solaris. Last week I found a rediculous problem in my system.
    I created a new directory named "test" under "/", and changed to the empty directory by "cd /test". Then I type "touch *" and get a new file named "*"!!! After that, I create two other new files. When I wanted to delete the * file I typed "rm *". You can guess what happened. All files in the current directory was ereased! Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the OS should prevent user creating any file named "*".
    Will anyone kindly give me an advice about that? My email address is [email protected] Thanks a lot!!!

    Hi
    If you do a
    $touch *
    then you should not get a file named "*" , rather
    the command should say "No match" , as there are
    no files in the directory. If there are files in
    the directory, it should touch all the files.
    On the contrary if you do a touch "*" , that is you
    want to create a file named "*" , then you are held
    responsible for that, and you should remove it by
    using something like
    $ rm "*"
    Let me know if this helps you.
    Thanks,
    Manish

  • General questions about Solaris 10

    Hi,
    We recently changed the Operating system on which our application runs from Solaris 2.5.1 to Solaris 10, on Sun Ultra-60 workstations.
    I have a few questions that i'd like to ask :
    - is there a way to have the boot messages back on screen ( we use boot scripts and need to see them run on screen before the login banner appears to know if everything is fine or wrong )
    - We use the "/usr/ucb/ps -auxwww" command to see the processes running, but with some users, the display is truncated, careless of the number of w we use.
    - Once I have installed my server ( this time it is a Sunfire V240 ), I need to create automatically a zone, everything seems fine, but the sysidcfg file seems not to work, I still need to connect to the zone to finish the configuration. Here is the sysidcfg file we use :
    name_service=NONE
    network_interface=hme0
    { hostname=air60s3
    netmask=255.255.255.0
    default_route=none
    protocol_ipv6=no
    security_policy=NONE
    system_locale=C
    timezone=Europe/Paris
    terminal=vt100
    timeserver=localhost
    root_passwd=dTbtiSecimQvo
    Thanks by advance for your responses

    screen ( we use boot scripts and need to see them run

    If you have a script that wants to display to the console no matter what, then instead of STDOUT, have it write something to /dev/sysmsg.

    processes running, but with some users, the display
    is truncated, careless of the number of w we use.Yes. If the user doesn't have privileges over the process (not the process owner or root in most cases), then you can't get that info. You could presumably use sudo, or do something with setuid and /usr/ucb/ps.

    Sunfire V240 ), I need to create automatically a
    zone, everything seems fine, but the sysidcfg file

  • Need Facts about Solaris

    I am trying to get the mail server moved to Solaris from NT. With the upgrade to 5.2 the office is wanting to move to 2000.
    I need to know some facts to sell Solaris. Are there any places where NT/2000 would be lagging to Solaris with functions of the mail server? I need facts with this not rumors. What are your experinces with running 2000 to Solaris?
    Thanks in advance

    To add the list
    Solaris is a true 64 bit OS/ HW platform. microsoft has yet to break that barrier.
    Solaris scales to more cpus and memory than any flavor of windows
    Like any other flavor of Unix Solaris has much better muti-threading/tasking ability
    Keep in mind jumping from the world of M$ into Sun does require a significant learning curve. If you are unable to justify your reasons for wanting to go to solaris I tend to wonder if you have ever worked with a *nix type OS. This is not meant to be an insult just an observation. Remember if you do not have the skillset and make the switch and things go wrong remember whos butt is on the line ;-)
