I'm not sure if there is a problem becuase a standard Ethernet frame MTU is 1500 bytes. This does not include the Ethernet header and Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) trailer, which is 18 bytes in length, to make the total Ethernet frame size of 1518.

  • Confused about mpls mtu command

    hi,
i confuse about mpls mtu command
test platforms are 76 pfc3b,mpls,gigabit sip400 spa interface
if i didn't config mpls mtu command ,using default, ping command is successful,if more than 1496 packets, i can see fragment from show ip traffic.
if i config mpls mtu override 1504,ping command is sucessful too. there is fragment too when i use 1501 byte packet.
if i config mpls mtu override 1524 byte.
ping command failed if i use packet more than 1500, , all packet are droped, even 1501 byte.only 1500 byte packet can success.
all config above interface mtu is 1500.
    this confused me.
why i use default 1500 interace mtu, mpls mtu override 1504 ,ping packet can fragment, ping success, but i use mpls mtu override 1524, i can see fragment in show ip traffic, but ping command failed. i can't see packet in destination router, how this work.
    thank you!
    jun

    topology is simple
    7609-1--sip GE spa----7609-2--pos---7609-3--flexwan E1-----7604-1--ge--ce
i config mpls mtu 1524 between 7609-1 and 7609-2 . and keep interface mtu 1500 default.
ping packet from 7609-1 to 7604-1 loopback 0.
ping 1500 byte packet is ok, but ping 1501 byte packet is totally lost.then i config mtu 1524 between 7604-1 and 7609-3, it is useless, notwork, i can't see packet coming from 7609-1 on 7604-1.
but i add config mtu 1524 between 7609-1 and 7609-2. config mtu 1500 between 7604-1 and 7609-3,ping 1501 bytes from 7609-1 to 7604-1 loopback0 is ok. but i can see fragment from show ip traffic command in 7609-3.
i have a question, why we need mpls mtu command. if we don't change interface mtu, just only config mpls mtu 1524, it doesn't work, if we just change mpls mtu,how it work in the ios. if we config interface mtu 1524,interface mtu size is big enough, it seems mpls mtu command is useless, we don't need mpls mtu command, just interface mtu 1524 is ok.
why we need mpls mtu command. we just only change interface mtu is enough.
    thank you!

  • MPSL MTU

    Hi,
I have a question about the mtu size with mpls.
How I set the mtu to support ATOM, VPLS, L3VPN?
I found some documents, but for me it is not totally clear.
It seems that the 12000 Routers sets automatically the mtu to 1538. The 7606, 7201 and 3750 not.
How i configure this on the various platforms?
only set the interface mtu and mpls mtu to 1538bytes (on 3750 the system mtu)?
Brings any drawback if I set, for example, the mtu to 1600 or greater?
    Regards,
    Thomas

Hi Thomas, [Pls RATE if HELPS]
Below provided are the MTU Configuration Methods on Cisco 7206 & 12000 Series Routers.
    Cisco 7206VXR (NPE-G1)
    1. Configure MPLS MTU as below:
    tag-switching mtu 4470
    2. L2 MTU
    mtu 1526
    Cisco 12404:
    1. Configure MPLS MTU as below:
    tag-switching mtu 4470
    2. L2 MTU
    mtu 4470
If i am not wrong, Cisco has introuduced MTU Support of greater than 1500 on Fast Ethernet Interfaces from IOS Versions 12.4(20)T onwards.
    Hope I am Informative.
    Pls RATE if HELPS

  • Another Invalid Signature Problem

For the last few Itunes updates, I have received the "invalid Signature" message and whilst there are a lot of other people reporting this problem, I haven't seen a definitive answer. I am directly ethernet connected to my Linksys router and everything else downloads perfectly. I will try to use another machine to download the update and copy it but I was hoping for a real answer???
    Paul Nol UK

A real answer would take some poking around in your particular model Linksys settings.
I saw one post about an MTU setting not matching between the router and the PC, but that was with a wireless setup, not ethernet like you have.
Frankly it would just be easier to download it from another PC, I think.
However, I'm curious if you can get a large download from any other site. The latest itunes DL is around 79MB. Adobe reader is about 49MB - does that go through?

  • Very specfic and odd network issue

Connected via my wireless network, this site:
    http://wiki.contextgarden.net
will not load via any browser (Firefox, IE, Safari, wget).
Connected via ethernet, it loads fine.
All virtual machines (windows) on the MBP also fail to load the page over wireless.
I have no other web/net problems using wireless on the MBP.
All other computers in the house, windows, macs and UNIX load the page fine, wired and wireless.
If I try to get the page using wget with debugging, it just hangs after the initial redirect or, after 30 minutes has managed to get a few bytes and then freeze.
As I say, I have no problems with the network at all apart from this and this seems to be the only site I have problems with and only on this machine via wireless.
Any ideas? It was like this on 10.5.4 too but I assumed the site was having trouble before I checked on another machine.
OSX 10.5.5 on a Macbook Pro

It was almost certainly an MTU black hole issue and replacing my 4 year old router fixed it. Didn't have time to mess about with MTU values.

  • Problems going through a Linux gateway

    Greetings,
I am using a Linux box at home to drive my DSL connection, and share it with all other machines (using Netfilter's built-in NAT abilities). It's an Ubuntu Dapper running kernel 2.6.15.
My Windows box has no problem at all and can access any web site. So does my PSP, for that matter.
On the other hand, my brand new Santa Rosa MBP can only access SOME web sites : google and a handful of others. I can also establish a stable ssh connection with a friend's server across that very same internet connection. With most sites, though, the browser starts making requests, then goes into timeout. For instance, I can't load www.apple.com : the browser's status bar (and a network traffic analyzer) show a bunch of requests, then everything freezes after requests are sent to images.apple.com.
I have the exact same symptoms under various settings :
    - MacOS X wirelessly connected to the linux gateway (through a Netgear AP) - Safari and Firefox both
    - MacOS X physically connected to the linux gateway (through another switch) - Safari and Firefox both
    - Windows XP (Boot Camp) wirelessly connected to the linux gateway (through a Netgear AP) - Internet Explorer
Since the problem also appears when wired in, it's not a wifi problem. I've tried fooling around with the MTU (lowering it on the MBP), but no cigar.
One final word : I can access the internet just fine using my neighbour's AP, so I'm almost certain it's a compatibility problem between my MBP and the linux gateway.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I must give you credit because a lot of people don't know anything about the MTU settings. What setting is it at right now? Is it the same as your PC's?
Try firefox or Flock as an alternative web browser just for now for Diagnostic Perposes.
Otherwise, my notebook and my brothers iMac works fine through a linux gateway.

  • MacBook Pro 10.8.2 slow wifi, but fluctuates from slow to fast

    Hey guys,
I have a MacBook Pro mid 09 with 10.8.2 and about a week ago, the wifi connection has all of a sudden either stopped working altogether or on occasion will speed up to max speed but will then slow down quicker than it sped up. Wifi on my iphone 5 is fast, and it seems to be working no problems for my housemates.
I have tried many suggestions about changing mtu length, adding new locations, Dns changes, rebooting router/MacBook, renewing dhcp lease,  basically everything I could find online in regards to wifi issues.
Has anyone got any experience with this because it is no fun having to use my phone as my only means of being online?

Perhaps you have interference from another router. Try changing the channel on the router.

  • In windows 7 i have been trying to copy the icon from the address bar to my desktop. but my icon stays behind and i end up with a fire fox icon. i have several programs that i would like to use their icon

    same a s question

    hey there...
you said that you have the latest FW for your router, may I ask what version is it?
one more thing what is the version of your Quick VPN?
In my case I can connect fine with no problems. How about your MTU since you are able to connect, have you tried adjusting it? Try using 1200 or 1300.

  • Not able to access secure  web sites

I have a satelite modem that connects via WAN port to my Airport Extreme which then is connected via LAN port to Netgear ethernet card on my PC. After just getting the broadband last week, I noticed that I cannot access certain secure sites such as my bank or american express site on my PC but I can do it via wireless from my PowerBook G4. When I bypass the Airport extreme and connect the modem directly to the PC ethernet card, I can then acess the secure sites on my PC.
Can some please help to solve this so that I can acess the secure sites on my PC as well when using the Airport Extreme?
After taking to tech supprot at the Hughes.net they say that the router is somehow blocking the sites into the PC- something about a MTU or something like that?
    Thanks for your help
    Faltu1

Thanks Duane for your prompt reply.
My knowlede of computers in very shameful. I am not aware of any software on the PC that has the wireless port more restricted. All I have is the AVG free Anit-virus and the Free Microsoft Fire Wall installed.
If it is a software blocking the ports; how can find out which one it is and what can be done to fix it.
Are there some settings on the AEBS that can be adjusted for it to communicate better with the PC to all the sites to pass through.
I did find some thing on the appple web site about restricted website but I don't understand what it means and wether it really applies to my situation. See below:
    Restricted address ranges
Using AirPort Admin Utility or AirPort Utility, check the "Public" or "WAN" IP address. If this address starts with a "10" or "192", your ISP is using restricted address ranges. This may affect the ability of the base station to share the Internet connection among computers. If you have difficulty connecting to some websites when the base station has a public IP address beginning with 10 or 192, use AirPort Admin Utility or AirPort Utility to turn off connection sharing for the base station. Only one computer will be able to connect through the base station. If you have a broadband modem, you may need to unplug its power supply for a few seconds to reset it. If that resolves your issue, contact your Internet service provider. In this configuration the base station is serving as a wireless bridge between your computer and the ISP, rather than as a wireless router. To connect more than one computer, your ISP would need to assign additional IP addresses to your account.
    Thanks for your help again.

  • Outgoing (smtp) mail problem

Since I made the last security update on Tiger, I am having big trouble sending out mail with attachments.
Text mails work well (up to 100k) but as soon as I add attachments, after a while an error message appaers (Server timed out, There may be too much traffic, please try agin later).
I used to work with Entourage X, I migrated to Mail 2.0.5 and the problem remains!
My ISP seems to work well (cable dsl provider in Luxembourg), I tried with various smtp providers and nothing seems to work!
Can someone help me out with this?
    PM G4 DUAL   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I checked out with my ISP!
Since three days they've been telling me that my hardware was having problems, nothing to do with them!
I called them to ask about the MTU and nobody could give me that info (never heard what MTU is).
Allan thank you very much about your help, but now they finally found out that there's something wrong with their smtp server.
After I called 10 times (waiting at least 5 minutes each time) and kept on saying nothing was wrong with my Mac.
So to all the people using DSL cable provider CODITEL in Luxembourg and Belgium, remember this:
1, They have the worst client support hotline ever seen!
2, They make their clients pay extra charges for their hotline (normal call + 0.5 € / minute).
    3. They need at least 48 hours to find out that they have a problem.
    4. They need up to 48 hours to tell you they have a problem.
    5. They need at least 48 hours to solve it.
It's not the first time this happens, sorry if this may cause inconvenience to mac users!

  • How best to improve graphics performance on RDS host servers??

We have a small RDS farm running on Windows Server 2012 R2.
All the RDS hosts and related servers are virtual servers running on vSphere 5.5 (hardware version 8 if that makes any difference).
I've seen various articles about configuring RemoteFX in Group Policy, but they are confusing.
I'm not asking about improving things like watching YouTube videos etc., I'm asking about improving graphics in general, like screen redraws and displaying mouse movements, keystrokes, etc.
What are the best things to do to improve these things within an RDS farm??
I will try increasing the video RAM within the host servers' VM settings but this is a guess, and these hosts are logged into by multiple users over VPN connections...
    Thank you, Tom

This is what I'm talking about wrt MTU on the central SonicWall:
http://carltonit.wordpress.com/2013/08/09/how-to-optimize-bandwidth-on-sonicwall-nsa-2400/ -- see the ping command for figuring out the best MTU, then configure it on the WAN interface, advanced settings
    http://www.firewalls.com/blog/sonicwall-throughput/
Can change MTU on central SonicWall, it's already been configured in the SonicWall 3500 in my building (1468) but I can't change all the other places (3 other agencies) that touch the central servers, they all use different ISPs and firewalls and routers
    etc.
However knowing about MTU is a good thing.
Checking network usage etc. -- I'm usually not with the person(s) when they say things are "slow," I usually find out 'after the fact' or through someone else, sigh...
I'll work on MTU over the weekend...
    Thank you, Tom

  • RSTP expertise/suggestions required

I am new in Cisco...RSTP is a global function and it can't run on specific port, right or wrong...? So it means when I run "spanning-tree mode rapid-pvst" command then it enables RSTP on all 24 ports but will it also enable RSTP on Gigabit/uplink ports?
Secondly, can any one tell me the command to disable RSTP on any port?
Here, I want to discuss my Network topology on which I will run RSTP...I have Six 2955T-12 Industrial Grade Switches. Two of them are Core Switches (using Two switches to provide redundancy in case of one Switch failure) and Four Switches are Access Switches for LAN1 and LAN2 (Again for LAN1 we using two switches for redundancy and same for LAN2). We will connect all Switches to each other with their Uplink Gigabit ports.
One more important thing is that both LAN's Computers (i.e. LAN1 and LAN2) have Dual LAN cards so that they will be connected with their both access Two Switches with Two LAN cards (we using Two LAN cards in Computers b/c of redundancy) e command to disable RSTP on any port
Now can anyone tell me configuration of RSTP ...?
Also I want to know that how we can run/enable RSTP on ONLY Uplink Gigabit ports?
Lastly, can I create Two or three VLANs in Catalyst 2955T-12 Switches but all VLANs should be Up?
    Regards,
    Shahid

    Hello Shahid,
    partial answer for your questions:
You can create up to 250 vlans on your CAT 2955T-12, but I believe you are actually asking about SVI (interface vlans) am I correct?
Layer 2-only switches only allows for 1 active interface vlan where you can assign 1 IP.
Why do you need to enable RSTP only on the uplinks? if its for compatibility issues. You should check the following link, as RSTP can work together with other STP modes with no problems:
    Spanning-Tree Interoperability and Backward Compatibility
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c3550/12225see/scg/swstp.htm#wp1150840
Hope this help a bit, if it does remember to rate this post.
    thanks, Vlad

  • Frequent connection drops

    Hi,
I have been fighting with this for the past month or so. I am living in a fairly remote spot so the line is not going to win any speed records but it has been pretty stable until the last month or so.
My line drops the connection but remains synced to the DSL. After a random length of time the router reconnects (usually at a really low sync ~ 1.2Mbps) before finally stabalising at ~2.6Mbps.
I have had the master socket replaced, I have tried three different routers, and I have tried various flavours of firmware for my current setup.
The connection is through a Billion BiPAC7800N which is connected to a QNAP412 that acts as a DNS server and Reverse Proxy, this is done to give us a slight speedup.
Here are the results of my tests you suggest and a copy of the latest log file from the router. It has just reconnected having failed as I was typing this (hence the slow sync speed).

did you set the router MTU to 1500?
here is a previous post about setting MTU  http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-Speed-Connection-Issues/BT-Broadband-and-MTU/td-p/12660

  • How about a status update on mtu for zen xtra--i want napster to

    hey creative,
any word on the update for mtu support for the xtra? napster is announcing the official release of napster to go, but as it currently stands, you can only use it on the micro, not the touch or the xtra. for a number of months we have been hearing that the release was just around the corner....any update?

    To whom it may concern,
I am replying to a post from 2004 about Napster to go compatibility with the Nomad Zen Xtra 40gb.
I have to say I am very upset that on July 8th, 2005 I bought the Zen Xtra 40gb after seeing THAT day that the Napster to go Service will be available soon from Creative. <This is on the NTG web page>
I went to Best Buy, and bought the Zen...and today am pissed off to find that the firmware upgrade that is "Coming soon" was announced as far back as 2004!!
This is REALLY upsetting and I am considering returning the Zen for an I-Ri'ver.
Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Zen xtra 40gb to death.. and don't want to give it up.. but the Napster to go Service is way too tempting and was a major decision when I bought the Zen Xtra.
So, any news on the firmware? Is it ever coming? Or do I return my player?
    Thanks!

  • L3 vpn and VPLS on same SVI.

    Hi,
Can anyone help me with this query?
I am trying to connect a CE router with two redundant links to two seperate PEs. I need spanning tree to be run between the PEs for the resilence and failover so was thinking VPLS, but also need the CE to connect to a L3 vpn.
Does anyone know if it is possible to have a vlan (SVI) in a VPLS instance and a L3 MPLS vpn?
    Thanks
    Wai-Lun

    Hello Wai,
I may be wrong but I don't think you can at the same time over a single SVI to offer L3 VPN and L2 VPN services.
However, I would suggest to divide your links/requirements: the two CE-PE1 and CE-PE2 links will be VRF access links from the PE point of view and you can use a dynamic protocol.
Routing protols can provide all the failover and redundancy you are looking for.
The PE Routers will be interconnected via MPLS backbone links.
If you miss your own backbone infrastructure you can use CSC (Carrier Supporting Carrier) or lease simple EoMPLS /VPLS links from a provider (this may need some thoughts about MTU)
    hope to help
    best regards
    Giuseppe
