About T400s fan

I reinstalled Windows 7 using another new copy of win 7 instead of the one preinstalled by lenovo which was accidently deleted by me.There is just one problem: the fan will continuously running at high rotation speed and generate large fan rotating noise once it reaches that speed and, even I do not run CPU consuming applications. It seems to be constantly running. I guess I did not install some necessary drivers. Does anybody know how to deal with this problem?

I'm having the same problem with my T410s. I did not reinstall Win7, factory install.
But whenever plugged into AC, my fan seems to be running at a pretty loud speed considering I am not putting any load of the CPU. It could be idle for 10 mintues and the fan will still be running at probobly 75% of its capacity. The second I unplug from AC, then fan becomes nearly silent.
I've tinkered with many possible combinations in the Lenovo Power Manager under advanced. Under 'Optimize Fan Control" I set it to 'Reduce Noise Dynamically', that causes the fan to become nearly silent for about 5 seconds and then kick back up for 5 seconds, and then go back to near silence for 5 seconds continually (Very annoying).
Any suggestions? Even when I set options in the Lenovo power manager under advanced that shows that the fan should be running quiet (as judging from the low amount of ticks under the fan sound level area) the fan keeps going at the same constant speed- no change.

  • Question about T400s fan

Hi, I have a question for T400s owners,
Have any of you noticed a "hiccup" in the t400s fan?  I can hear the fan (its not a quiet as some people say it is) and it clicks or hiccups kind of in a rhythmic pace every few seconds. I'm wondering if the fan is going bad

    Hello Samtoossi,
I have the exact same phenomenon on my brand new T400s (2808/D9G). It sound like there is some sort of strange mechanism to "respin up" the fan every few seconds : the fan speed is not constant at any time in fact, it spins a little down, then there is a little boost, and again and again.
I'm not sure this is an issue, even if I wondered at first... And now knowing I'm not alone...
Did you contact Lenovo for that ?
    Thanls
No,  I just use TPFanControl to keep the fan off most of the time. I'll wait until something major happens and then include this issue into the mix when I call lenovo. Im kind of hesitant to get anything in this laptop replaced right now. If its the fan that needs to replaced, its not a big deal, but If its a motherboard issue there is no way in I'm going to replace it because there are many reports by other owners of annoying processor whine, unresolved random shutdowns, and melted speakers. I'm pretty happy with the current state of my laptop, thanks to TPFanControl
FYI, this looks very similar to the infamous "pulsing fan" problem that affected many of the earlier IBM Thinkpads. Its due to ACPI polling the fan RPM every few seconds (every 6 sec for my T400s). IBM eventually released a BIOS update which fixed the problem. If you run TPFanControl, you will see that the pulsing is only noticeable under fan speed 2 which constantly changes speed. Fan speeds 1, 3,4,5,6,7 don't have this problem (speed 3 kind of has it, but its no where as annoying). It could be that this is a common problem, but most people just don't hear it because of ambient noise or they're just not bothered by it. Hopefully, a BIOS update in the future fixes this problem.
If you decide to call Lenovo and have the fan replaced, let me know how it works out

I see that you are having a fan problem. If you are getting that error message it could be that the fan needs replacement. You can try cleaning using the information in this overheating document.
If you are still getting that error message then you will need to have that replaced. You can either take it to a local technician or call HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or if you live outside of North America visit this link.

  • Much better- and question about constant fan noise

i couldn't start anew thread a few minutes ago. I replied to 2 threads, then the startanew thread iconmagically appeard! I am not making it up.
any way- i posted a while back about noise. I thought it may be the hard drive. But definatley it sounds like the fan(s) in my MBP dual core
my MPB was silen when i first bough it. then a few month in it got noisy. Now thw fans are on all the time.
anyone else with a MPB that is just noisy? this *****! macs are almost always quiet. this is annoying acually. and it is non stop! i can't recal a moment when the fns were not winding like tiny air craft jet engines! LOL wel, it's not that funy actually.
the noise does change in pitch on occasion. sort of like they slow down a tiny bit. other wise they just hum away.
I had a G-4 I mac- SILENT! then a dual G-5 tower- it was quest until it roared up on a task, then it roared with power then got quiet again.
but this tiny mpbis just noisy!
Well, i hoope it is the fans, not the HD. It prettty much sounds like fans, and constant.
but considering theroom temp is abou 68 in here, whywould the fans be on? and non stop?
we live in a cold climate, so it's not a 100 weather.
any help with the fans and perhaps a test or a way to turn them down? does my system think the core is hot?
    thanks for any help

only about 13% is a peak ap. nothing major, nor a lot of stuff. but nothing consuming 30 40 or more percent or anything. Nothing running except safar in this case, activity monitor.nothingexcessive like 10 aps , whihc i have done in the past as we know the macs can handle it
well, nothing seems out of the ordinary.
I included a pic from that FAN CONTROL AP- well was going to, but not sure how.
any way my stats from it are:
base speed, 1500 rpm (on both actually)
    ower threshhold 122F
    upper 176F
current temp at that moment was 101F
can someone compare their fans to mine and their temp- i assume it is the cpu core temp.
any way, not sure what is a safe range, nor why my fans are running non-stop.
just noisy? but like i said they do occilate a little ans slow and the hum gets deeper then they go back to normal which is a slightly higher pitch.
as for that iStat pro ap. i opened it and it just made my application dock bar flash then the dock came back. The Istat pro didn't open.
Um- it looks like a widget. I may have taken my widget ap of some time ago. I hve yahoo widgets on. but not sure how to get that istat to work. I can't even recall the name of the apple widget program.
thanksfor help on tracking this noise down-
are any of your guys's fans really noisy? is this common? mine is just non-stop but if my settings are off or if there is areason, then I can adjust it from there. just want to know what the "normal range" or operation of the fans are. but man they are noisy for a mbp. and they WERE QUIET when i first got this laptop.
    thanks again

  • Question about 970 fan RPM

I just got a 970 and so far I'm loving the performance, but I noticed something a little weird about how it controls the fans. My temps hover right around 60 when gaming, so I'm just at the threshold of where the fans kick in. When I look at the fan RPM graph in afterburner they are switching rapidly between 600 RPM and 0 RPM. I was wondering if this is harmful to the fans in any way, because from what I can see in afterburner the card is constantly turning the fans on and off. I'll post a pic below of what I'm talking about.

maybe overclock your card, let it reach a bit higher temperature, so the fans could remained spinning?

  • Question about youview fan

    Hi guys
I just bought a bt youview box and started using it and noticed that it was getting hot. The box wasn't making any noise really so I looked at the back and noticed the fan wasn't running. So I took it back to the shop a d they gave me a new one get home turn it on and the fan isn't running ? Does the fan only cut in when the box gets really hot ? Or I'm I just really unlucky.
I heard these youview boxes can be noisy but I can't hear anything apart from the hard drive ticking abit.
    Any help please

  • IBook 12" 1.33 Question about the Fan?

I am looking to purchase an apple laptop for class and work. I have a HP laptop now that runs great and is fine, except the underlying problem is windows just plain ***** and I'm tired of all the crap that goes wrong with windows. I have a mac desktop, the new iMac 20" core duo, but am looking to replace this laptop since I may need it for school and work.
My question is geared towards those that use their iBook with light/moderate use...does the fan run constantly and is it loud? I think the most annoying thing about this HP laptop is sitting in class or a meeting and the fan is running and its LOUD! So, if I were typically using microsoft office (i.e. word, excel) or photoshop, would the fan be running a lot?? Thanks for any advice!

Have to politely disagree with this comment... an iBook's fan can be quite loud! It's quite obvious when it's on vs. when it's off!!
And it could run while using Office depending upon
    a) air circulation issues
    b) background indexing
    c) hard drive room
    etc.
But having said all that, I don't think this should prevent you from buying an iBook as the fan will rarely come on under normal operating circumstances.
Until recently, after upgrading to the laste OS and security update, and seemingly ONLY when indexing an external hard drive, our iBooks' fans have practically never come on at all.

  • Can anyone tell me about 5700 fan power

i will upgrade my pc 5700.but everyone is talkin about heat sink and something about temp.so if the fan is not good enogh.what il do then or can anyone tell me about it plz im really pissed off and i dont know what to do.

AOpen 250watts is simply too weak to handle a High End card like this, not even mentioning to handle a P4 2.4B GHz CPU and a NEO2 mobo with 1 stick of 512MB DDR 333 RAM stablely...
I know that it's just simply too weak for the P4s now combo with a FX5600 series and above.
Post your PSU specs which is labelled to the PSU for a better understanding.
No Offence here, just stating the facts only .

  • Contacting Apple Tech support about persistent fan problem

I have had a persistent fan noise problem for nearly a year now. My MacPro is 16 months old and the video card fan constantly runs at high or near high all the time. My MacPro is never silent and often very noisy. This, I understand, is very abnormal for the MacPros. I have listened to other MacPros in shops and they are nearly silent. Mine buzzes always.
I have taken my computer in three times since purchasing it. The video card has been replaced twice (ie, I'm on my third video card) and the motherboard has been replaced once as well. I've taken the machine to two different repair shops and I still have this fan noise problem. All the repair guys can say is "yeah its noisy but I don't know why"
I would like to contact Apples main tech support about this but cannot find any info on how to on the support site. Does anyone know how to contact Apple's main tech support (e.g., who do the technicians contact when they run into trouble)?
    Thanks for your help

The numbers on the page I linked to are all, to the best of my knowledge, Apple tech support, not independent support providers, with the possible exception of Hong Kong and perhaps some of the smaller areas; I'm not sure, not having called them all. What country are you in?
BTW, there is no email for Apple tech support. Apple provides tech support via telephone only.

  • Irc...if not ??? about cooling fan g62-355dx

i have a g62-355dx and i put a quad core processor in it however the stock cooling fan only does a partial job at keeping it cool i very often get an overheat shutdown... i would like to get an upgraded cooling fan if possible...
also if there is an offician irc channel i would like to get that channel name as that is the best way to communicate...currently all i can find is ##hp freenode which is an unofficial channel with like 5 users...so not very helpful...if there is another the channel name would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance

    Well, now I'm updating BIOS.
Can you further help me like a dialogue box is asking for Current BIOS ID and version as well as New BIOS ID and version.
well, I have located the BIOS information in the system registry. Current Version is F.29 but not sure about BIOS ID, it may be BaseBoardProduct which is 1444.
Well, also I have come to know that the new version of BIOS that Im gonna install is F.27 and now how to find the new BIOS ID??
and isn't it strange that the current installed version of BIOS is F.29 and new version is F.27 ???

  • About the fans

I just got my macbook pro (unibod) and installed the software fan speed.....i noticed only the left fan is functioning....the right fan is -1 rpm which i think is not functioning.....is it normal or something wrong with it ?

    Hi cardfish,
If you head to the Apple menu and choose "About this mac", "More Info." and then look at the "hardware" overview you will be able to see both the Model number and the processor speed. If you post these here it will tell us if you have one fan or two.
If it is a current model 15" 2.53GHz model, or either of the 13" models, then it will have one fan. If it is a current model 15" 2.66 or 2.8GHz model, or a 17", it will have two.
Some "monitoring software" , like iStat, simply reports the non existent "right fan" on the "one fan" models as if it was spinning at around 0 rpm.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • About T400s' EFI/UEFI rom

I'm an software engineer and fond of Thinkpad. I'm using over 10 thinkpad laptops/keyboards/etc. currently. None can be better than Thinkpad in laptop.
I'm using T400s for over 2 years and it's great. I'm using an Ubuntu Natty now and It can boot from GRUB to Desktop in about 6.3 seconds. But the BIOS is too slow!
I saw a famous video from Phoenix, they used a magical version of BIOS(EFI/UEFI?) to boot to the Bootmgr in 1~2 seconds. And I tried really hard (searched and read over 100 threads/blog posts/sth.else) to find something released or even something about it, but I failed.
I really really wan't to try that fabulous thing, even unstable, even buggy, even ... So can the stuff of Lenovo to help me to do this? I wan't be a volunteer for testing and I won't leak it to public(I can sign Confidentiality agreement with Lenovo if needed).
    Thanks,

Lenovo won't release such update for the T400s, if you need UEFI you would have to get the T420s.

  • Question About Northbridge fan

    First, my system specs:
    Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8GHz HTT w/ 800MHz FSB
Thermaltake Spark 7+ Xaser Edition A1715 CPU Cooler
    MSI 865PE Neo2-PFISR motherboard (BIOS ver. 3.8)
    2x512MB Kingston PC3200 DDR SDRAM @ 400MHz
    Maxtor 6Y120M0 120GB HDD 7200RPM SATA150 8MB cache
    Built-by-ATI Radeon 9800 Pro @ XT 128MB DDR 256-bit @ 415/744 (Catalyst 4.12)
Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer Revision 3
    Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum
    Sony DDU1612 40x/16x DVD-ROM

    Enermax Noisetaker EG475P 470W PSU(+3.3V = 34A, +5V = 40A, +12V = 33A)
    Windows XP Pro SP2
Even though on MSI's website the picture for the PFISR doesn't have a northbridge fan, mine does.  So, is there a reason why this thing is so bloody loud?  It sounds like a piece of plastic is just barely sticking up into the fans, creating a rattling sound.  If I turn my CPU fan speed down to a moderate speed, the NB fan is the loudest thing in my case, and I have five 80mm case fans and two PSU fans going full speed.
Does my motherboard have fan control for this fan?  Is it possible to turn the speed down some?  What if it I just remove the damned thing altogether?  I don't really see the point of having the fan there anyway, since both it and the heatsink are so small that they can't really be moving that much heat.  How hot does the northbridge usually get?  Is it possible to overclock the northbridge and see any performance gain?

  • Quick question about Panaflo fan

Will the Neo2 throttle this fan's speed based on temperature readings like it does with the stock HSF? I'd prefer it to run max speed most of the time.

Smart CPU Fan target is what I guess you're referring to? It's not on... but when I look at the RPMs the fan seems to cycle between speeds of 3375 and 4000RPM... it's usually consistent with temperature increases.
But if that's not the case then please educate me, the fan sensor could be going nuts, I don't know...
