  • About the iPhone and it's "lack of basic features"

There are SO MANY rants going on in this discussing board about the iPhone lacking "basic features" of a cellphone. Here is my response to all of them at once. (I know this has nothing to do with user-to-user technical support, but the topic is discussed on here enough to warrant this post.)
Sure, I would like to be able to send texts messages to multiple contacts, I would love to be able to add my own ringtones, copy and paste, and picture message. Here's the deal, Apple didn't set out to create a product with those features, they didn't set out to create a product that is like all the others or that has all the best features that every other phone has. They started over. They didn't compare it to any other phone. They have said over and over that the iPhone is a completely new product from the ground up. Sure it includes some features that can be found in phones that came before it, but it's all done in a new way. It's not some super phone that combines the best of every smartphone out there. They were very open about this and listed EVERYTHING the phone was going to be capable of. No, they didn't tell you the things that it wouldn't do, that's not the angle they were taking when designing and marketing this product, no one does that. The iPhone does everything they said it would do and does it better than any other phone that has the same features. So how can anyone come on here a gripe about it lacking basic features? The features I listed above are features that someone else reading this may never need or want. Basic features to you are not going to be basic features to me. Basic features 3 years ago are not basic features today nor will they be in 3 years. There are no basic features when it comes to the iPhone, other then perhaps the phone part. When you set out to create a product from the ground up, you don't start with a list of features that need to be included. You start with a blank slate and build on that, from your own ideas, your own technology, not based on what anyone else is doing or what has been done in the past. This is what Apple has done, and they have been very clear about it from day one. So please, if you feel that the iPhone lacks the "basic features" on a cell phone, take it back so that someone else can have that phone and enjoy its "basic features," that are like no other phone before it.

Your posting should have went to the Apple.com feedback section instead of posting it here in the user to user forum, this goes back to doing research on what the iphone can and cannot do before making the purchase you have to remember this is just the first generation iphone just like there was a first generation ipod most likely they'll be enhancements coming up for the iphone i myself am happy with my iphone, how many cell phones out there have visual voicemail?

iPhone 3G has received its last iOS update. If wallpapers behind the homescreen icons is such an important feature for you, you'll need a newer model iPhone.

  • A few (basic) questions about the iPhone

I just got my iPhone 3GS about a week ago. I am very new to the whole smartphone arena, so some of my questions my seem stupid. Please be kind regardless.
I've learned a lot about the iPhone by trial and error (pressing buttons to see what happens) but one thing I just discovered was the multitasking bar. When I accessed it, I saw every app I had run since I got the phone displayed in the multitasking bar. And I know that by holding the icons on the bar, you can bring up a red minus sign, touch it, and remove that app from the bar. My question is, are all of those apps displayed in the mutltasking bar constantly running in the background, and thus, draining more battery than necessary?
Secondly, on the topic of wifi. I have my phone set to automatically join known networks and ask me to join unknown networks that it detects. However, it doesn't seem to be doing that. I still have to manually go to settings and search for the network. It will automatically join my home network (for example, when I go somewhere and come home, it will switch back to my home network automatically), but it won't do this with, for example, the wifi network at McDonald's even though I did go through the setup and make that network a known network. Am I mistaken in thinking the phone should do this automatically, or do I have to search for the network every single time? Also, since I have "ask to join networks" checked, will it automatically detect nearby networks, or do I also have to manually search for those? I understand this question may be confusing, so I can try to clarify if need be.
My last question is concerning conserving the battery. I currently have both wifi and 3G active on my phone, and I have read conflicting reports of which one drains more battery. Some say to turn off 3G and keep wifi, others say vice versa. I'm at home a lot so I'm always near my home wifi network and don't need 3G for data transfer unless I'm out and about. So is it better to turn 3G off unless I leave? I'm just trying to do whatever I can to conserve battery because I've noticed that the battery drains quite rapidly.
Sorry for the long post, I just wanted totry and clear those things up. I hope you can help me. Thanks in advance.

Only the last 4 apps to be run are actually active and in RAM. The others are swapped out to flash memory in a saved state (i.e you should be able to resume where you left off, if the app is written to support that). They don't therefore drain battery. I close all apps down from time to time (every few days) just to keep things neat.

It should automatically list new networks when (a) you're in range and (b) you try to connect to the internet (e.g. browse to a web page or check for email)

The issue is not which drains more battery, but which you need to connect to the internet. Where you have wifi access, switch off 3G, where you have 3G, switch off wifi.

  • Does BB care that customers are unhappy about the iPhone 5 pre-order process? Should they?

It is obvious that there are more than a few customers who are unhappy with the iPhone 5 pre-order process. In my case I was unhappy with it. BB kept pointing the finger at Apple. It is well documented in the press that Apple has redirected supply to Apple customers then to phone companies. So, although still unhappy, I was buying BB's explanation.
Fast forward to this past Saturday. I received an email that my iPhone is ready for pick up. Due to prior commitments over the weekend I planned on picking up the phone on Monday. On Sunday I get an email stating that if I don't pick up my phone by Tuesday my preorder would be canceled. I gave it no thought. This morning (Monday) I got a reminder email. Still everything is good, because I'm going to pick it up today.
I walked into the store seconds after the door was unlocked. I hand my paperwork to the salesman in the mobile department. He asked me if I had received a phone call. I said no. He said there was no iphone for me. I showed him the emails on my phone. The net result is that I do not yet have my iphone. I am expecting someone at BB to blame the emails on Apple.
Does BB care about the fact that there are disgruntled customers? Should they? They no longer have any brick and mortar competitors. Since they have a monopoly in most markets, should they even bother to care? Caring would probably eat into their profits.

They absolutely should care.  The thing about the iPhone is that it is a product that makes a large splash.  People can instantly talk about it since it is statistically a good ice breaker.  One of the first things I talk about when I discuss my iPhone with other's is where to buy it and I have not recommended Best Buy for the way they have handled this exact scenario.  When they found out what had happend they could have at the very least offered to price match Walmart for the 16GB version.
As far as the competition is concerned.  I say that I will be purchasing the more costly electronics online or Costco.  I am through with Best Buy.  I will stop in periodically and "play" with the item's I am interested in purchasing but no longer will I buy from them.
By blaming Apple for this and given that Apple has done this to them in the past, I can only wonder how they did not see this coming.  If I were in a situation where I knew the supplier would even consider Shorting me on supply I would demand a written and legally binding statement by that supplier that I would not get stiffed for the devices.  It only makes sense that if you have a contract to sell then you have a contract to secure your supply.
If this contract existed we would be hearing about a lawsuit against Apple by Best Buy but they don't have this agreement so they just look amature and naiive.
Good luck to you in getting your phone.  I simply walked into an Apple Store in Cupertino CA on 09/21/12 at 5PM and walked out by 5:30PM with all my contacts and email set up.

There are tons of complaints about the WiFi interface on the iPhone, with errors and problems similar to what you're seeing on the iPad.

As a retired network device driver writer, I realize that the same device driver is probably running on both platforms. So more than likely, you'll see the same bugs on both platforms. Unless we're dealing with a hardware issue.
I would guess that the iPhone/iPad losing it's WiFi password issue is a software bug.

  • What do you think about the iPhone 4 for my 11 year old daughter

What do you think about the iPhone 4 for my 11 year old daughter

It should be a good choice. I recently got the 5C which typically is $99 with supported carriers. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint provide attractive pricing with a two year contract or it you are adding a line to your current service. I have several friends using the 4S, and they have been very pleased with them.

  • When will we see details about the iphone 4?

Anyone hear about when they are releasing more information about the iphone 4? Plans, pre-orders etc.

"iPhone 4 will be available for pre-order to Verizon Wireless customers only, on a “first come, first serve” basis via VerizonWireless.com, on or around February 3rd 2011 – details to be confirmed a week prior by Verizon Wireless. New and existing customers can purchase in select channels on February 10th 2011."

  • Everyone Stop Worrying About The iPhone 5 It's Not Coming Out This Year!

Many have been saying, don't buy the Verizon iPhone 4 because in 6 months it will be outdated by the iPhone 5, this is completely false! Just because Apple has introduced a new iPhone every year doesn't mean it couldn't skip a year, I mean it's only happened 4 years in a row not 50. Think about it, Apple has a new product, the iPad, and with many other tablets trying to catch it, it is much more likely that this summer at the Apple Conference we will see an iPad 2 and a new software upgrade, iOS 4.5. Think about it the iPhone 4 has been the most successful iPhone to date and now they are introducing it to 93 million more people! I think they can survive a year without releasing a new iPhone. Also Apple mentioned that this iPhone didn't have 4G because of "current chip technology", do you really think they will have that all sorted out and ready to go in just 6 months?! No way! Apple cares too much about battery life, and their whole problem with 4G is that right now it uses too much battery life, so expect them to take another year to fix all that and test it out, remember AT&T doesn't even have a 4G network yet. The most you could expect is a price cut on the iPhone 4. However if by some miracle they do release a new iPhone this year it will not be what everybody is thinking, it will be like what the 3GS was to the 3G. It won't really add anything new at all, and your iPhone 4 will still be able to do everything that it can do. So don't be afraid, go buy the iPhone 4 February 10th, and 20 months later (October 2012) you can upgrade to the iPhone 4G, only 3 months after it will have come out.
Also I have been seeing threads of people saying that Verizon will get new iPhones in February and AT&T will get them during the summer before Verizon, this is also completely false, the only reason the iPhone is coming out right now is because Apple and Verizon wanted to make the iPhone available to it's customers as soon as possible, right when Apple's contract with AT&T was up. So this is just a special thing, after this new iPhone's will be released on both AT&T and Verizon at the same time during the summer.

First of all, I think we can all agree that the home button isn't going anywhere (atleast on the iphone, the screen is too small for 4/5 finger gestures, plus you wouldn't be able to use the phone with one hand anymore), not only would that be the stupidest decision ever but every website that mentions it links it back to a site called BGR which claims they got "an exclusive tip"... sure. Also have you seen the code for the new iOS 4.3? It shows the devices: iPhone 3,3 iPhone 4,1 iPhone 4,2 iPad 2,1 iPad 2,2 and iPad 2,3 don't you think that means iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM), iPhone 4 (CDMA), iPad 2 (GSM), iPad 2 (CDMA), and iPad 2 (WiFi)? Also look at the screenshot taken from the iPad, it shows that multitouch gestures are optional, how can they be optional if you lose the home button?
Anyway, even if I'm wrong about all of this, there is no point in waiting 6 months for the next iphone because it won't really be the "next" iphone it will just be a slight update like the 3GS was, and maybe not even that, and the iPhone 4 will be able to do everything that it can do, and the worse part is that you will not be able to upgrade to the "real" next iphone (2012) because you will have signed a new 2 YEAR contract! Atleast if you get the iPhone 4 on February 10th, you will be able to upgrade in 20 months (October 2012) only 3 months after the iPhone 2012 is released.
Granted removing the home button from the iPhone is a bit of a stretch but you never know with Apple. The versioning in the iOS is -1 of version of the actual hardware, iPhone 3,x (code) = iPhone 4 (hardware).  iPhone 4,x (code) = iPhone 5 (hardware).  If read in the engadget article it states, "two new-generation iPhones (4,1 and 4,2) and three iPads (2,1; 2,2; and 2,3)."  That mean iPhone 5 and iPad 2 is coming to AT&T and Verizon
It's very plausible that it could be something like a 4GS but when Apple increments the version number by a whole number in the code it normally means a new hardware devices not an updated one.
I'm just scratching my head on why Verzion would announce the iPhone availability when the release of a new iPhone is going to happen in the matter of a few months.  Why not just wait till July and announce the availability?  Is it just greed or stupidity on Verizon/Apple part?
If the version of the iOS is -1 of the actual hardware, then why is the iPad 2: 2,1; 2,2; 2,3? Also, even if Apple is going to release a new iPhone in a matter of months, the reason they are releasing an iPhone 4 right now is because they wanted to start selling an iPhone on Verizon as soon as the AT&T contract was up. Why wait 6 months to make money when you can do it right now? This is also why Apple made sure that the contract they signed with Verizon was not exclusive, that way they could start selling to T-Mobile and Sprint whenever they wanted, they didn't want to make the same mistake they made with AT&T.

  • An inportant question about the iPhone 5 screen!

Not sure if i grasped the concept of the new iPhone 5 screen but from what i understood is that the glass screen n the sensors which detect the touch of ur fingers have been integrated into one screen allowing for a thinner phone, the only problem is that if ur glass were to crack, would that render the touch sensors useless? In the first 4 models if the screen cracked all was well and u only had to worry about the spot of cracked screen n the sensors n screen were fine...now im worried that the sensors and even the screen might b affected...thanx in advance
PS: Im also to understan that the new glass on the phone is superior in resistance than older models but in sure it doesnt make it invinsible

The previous phones were like this
    ----------- Glass
    ----------- Touch Sensors
    ----------- Pixels
Now, the iPhone 5 is that way
    ----------- Glass
    ----------- Pixels & Touch Sensors

  • Truth about the iphone

Everyone keeps posting all this crap about the battery and the volume. The battery is not the greatest but still it isnt the worst. Think about the phone and what it has to run an ipod a web browser widgets applications mail and a phone what do u expect to have a battery last forever. It doesnt do anything talking about how bad the battery is and they should fix it, they are going to fix it but not right now.
The volume is bad compared to my old phone but what a friend was saying is that it is better than her old phone. The volume will take time to adjust to and they probably will fix it but I think we all know that the volume is bad so please stop talking about it.
    Written from my iPhone.

I am really happy that your phone is working and that you are able to use the iPhone as a real phone. I, as many others are simply trying to find out if we will ever be able to do the same.
Please don't think that any of us are Apple bashing. I know I am not and I very much want Apple to succeed at this phone stuff, but the real problem is that many of us have purchased a phone that we can not use.
So, no - everyone - do not stop talking about problems that you are having. This is akin to the three monkeys hear no, see no, talk no. The hear no part is easy.
I can't hear well enough through my iPhones receiver to talk to anyone and someone should be telling us that this is a known problem and that it will be addressed.
I am starting to feel like I was lied to through at least the commercials that did not display any signs of speaker, volume problems and no one from Apple is saying anything which makes it even worse.
Right now I am living with my mistake, but you do not have any right to tell us to shut up and move on.
If your phone has low volume and you want to be part of a cover-up and act like everything is okay, then you are part of the problem not part of any solution.
As I said, if you are happy with your phone, congrats, from what I am reading and have experienced you are one of the few.
So, I am now on iPhone number 2 now and I am still not able to use it as a phone.
If they (Apple) would say that the volume is the best it is ever going to get and if no one has a third part solution to fix the volume issue soon, then I would be happy and just return mine and get a different type of phone.
I have tried 2 Bluetooth’s, neither are something I want to hold a business call on and so I am continuing to watch for an answer.

  • What is to be done about the iPhone 6 plus bending

I pre order the iPhone 6 plus and yet to have my item but on searching the internet it's came across that the iPhone 6 plus is bending why being in your pocket.
now being a builder I will be cancelling my order if it don't her something is to be done to fix this problem.

This is really disappointing news.  I have seen the you tube videos showing simple hand pressure destroying the iPhone 6 Plus.  I have been waiting for my iPhone 6 Plus on order with BestBuy but honestly, this thing just bent so easily that I don't know how I can justify $1000 on a phone that is very likely to bend on me with just normal use.  You shouldn't have to put your iPhone into a military case just to keep it from bending with normal use.  I was just going to buy a silicon case to help protect against drops.  But that won't stop it from bending based on what I saw in the demonstration video.  Maybe its the curved edge combined with the pliability of aluminum alloy and the weakness where the volume controls are.  Maybe the volume controls should have been smaller and round to make it stronger.  I'd certainly rather it be heavier but unbendable.
I really miss Steve Jobs.  I don't think he would have let this phone go to market with such an easily detectable flaw and I think he would have been more demanding about bringing out a phone that truly wowed the world after such a LONG wait for the new update.  I was happy with the iPhone 6 Plus overall but I truly think Steve would have had it to market sooner and with more WOW, and without bending like cheap junk.  I know the phone is not junk but a fatal flaw like this makes it just about as useful as junk.
    **** I miss Steve Jobs.

  • Just got a razr v9, and just heard about the iphone

I just signed with AT&T 2 months ago and got a RAZR V9, but at literally just found out about the 3g iphone ten min ago. I was wondering if anyone knew if i could sign again my 2 year contract to get an 3g iphone (i dont care if i would have to pay full price or activation fees) or would i have to wait another ten months till i can get my upgrade. =\
    Thanks for the help!

When you get the iPhone your current contract will be replaced with a new 2 year agreement
That's certainly true, and for owners of existing iPhones that's really all that matters because the original device was not subsidized by AT&T. However, for other cellphones where in effect AT&T discounted the purchase cost and recovered that discount via the monthly service plans, it isn't as simple as saying that anyone can just get an iPhone and in effect terminate their existing plans. In the case of the OP here, that would mean AT&T would be many months short of recovering their handset subsidy for the Moto v9. That's why the carriers all have 'upgrade eligibility' where (depending on the individual rules of the carrier) you can trade up to a new phone after a certain amount of existing contract time. I don't know whether with AT&T that's after 12 months, 18 or 24 (or some other figure) but it very likely is more than in this specific case.
For the OP, the answer is that no, it is very unlikely to be possible to upgrade to the iPhone just yet, but the easiest way to find out for sure and determine when, it to contact AT&T and ask, or to go to your account online (https://www.wireless.att.com:443/cell-phone-service/welcome/ and click on the 'My Account' link in the top right) and after logging in, you should be able to navigate to a screen via the 'upgrade' link and see if it says you are upgrade eligible or not.
