About This Mac screen in Lion still that of Snow Leopard
I recently wiped my MBP's drive, installed Lion and migrate all my apps and data manually.
After I got settled in I remebererd Lion was supposed to have this fancy new "About This Mac" screen.
I was very disappointed to find my system does not have it. Screen shot features my About This Mac on the left and a screenshot of what it should be on the right. What's going on?
You've downloaded the istaller only. Check your Applications folder, you should find within the program Install Lion. There's no custom install. At the end, your Mac restart, deleting the installer.

Redundant "about this mac" screen remains in Lion
Hi everyone,
I would very much appreciate your help with the folowing: I just did a clean install of Lion. When I clicked 'about this mac', located under the apple menu, I expected the new Lion version of it to appear. Instead, I get the old Snow Leopard version (top one in image). When i click on more info I get the new Lion screen, which is often mentioned in reviews as a cool feature (bottom one in image). As you can see both have the same info, having two screens seems overkill.
-Is this happening in your version of Lion?
-If yes: To Apple: the old version of this screen is redundant and looks outdated. Please get rid of it.
-Where are these screens located in the system folders, and how could I fix this?- Same happens on my two Macs with Lion.
- Tell Apple here http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
- Sorry, no idea.

Last night, I downloaded Mountain Lion. I watched, as an unfamiliar screen came up, showing the download progress, when it was all over, my desktop went back to looking and acting just like Lion. I tried restarting it, nothing. I tried restarting again, nothing. I performed a "Find" for Mountain Lion, nothing. I performed a "Find" for OSX 10.8, nothing. I am simply trying to install it on the computer I downloaded it to.
What am I doing wrong? I wrote an email to Apple support, and got a "canned" email back, telling me how to generically retrieve downloads from the App Store. But, by following those directions, I do not see (nor did I expect to see) Mountain Lion in my iTunes. I see it in my download history, but no method to install it, which I thought it was doing, last night, when I bought and thought I was downloading it.Open Launchpad and see if "Install Mountain Lion ..." is displayed. If it is then you will find the application in your Applications folder.
Normally, the applicaton launches automatically after it is downloaded. You would have to click on the Install button in order to start the upgrade. -
App store said Lion installed but 'about this mac' is still 10.6.8
Dear Apple,
I purchased the Lion last night and when I woke up this morning, the App store said Lion installed but when I check 'about this mac', my imac is still in 10.6.8. Tried the software update and reboot, it is still the same. Is there an option to redownload and install Lion again?
Regards,
HK Guygo into your Applications folder and double click the Install Mac OS X Lion.app.
it will start the install from there -
Like I wrote above I just want to see how much storage I have left, any other methods on how to view it?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to open About This Mac. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Hello.
When I go to "About this Mac", then "Storage", I see that there is 77.55G in the "Other" (the yellow one) folder.
I mostly have pics, music, apps and movies on my computer.
Any ideas what that 77.55G is and how to clean it up?"Other" includes everything that is not audio, movies, photos, apps, or backups. It includes downloads, work products such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, Mail messages and their attachments, and OS X itself. 77+ GB is not at all unusual.
To determine what it might be consider reading the following, from the late Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini's FAQ:

why would it state under the "more about this mac" that i already have10.8.3 and then in the app store say i need to "resume" do you know what i mean? is it possible i already did download mountain lion entirely once? I am confused and don't want it twice
This is cause by the way the App Store checks to see if an application is installed on your system.
Basically when an app is installed it is in the Applications folder and this is where the MAS looks for them. So it looks at your purchase history for the apps you bought and looks in the Applications folder to see if they are installed. If an app is in your purchase history but not in the Applications folder the MAS says you need to install it.
For normal apps this works fine but the OS doesn;t install into the Applications folder. So the MAS sees you have Mountain Lion in your purchase history but it's not in the Applications folder and so it says you need to download it.
Hopefully one of these days Apple wil fix this.

Well, my title basically asks the question that I am seeking an answer for. Im not sure what year my MB Pro is, and I cant exactly find it on the Apple site. Its a 2.16 Intel Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. All I see (dating back to 2007,) is Intel Core 2 Duo on the apple site. Im pretty sure (but not 100% positive,) that my MB Pro is a late 2008/early 2009. Just trying to figure out if I can install LION OSX or not, since it requires atleast intel core 2 duo, and mine says I only have the intel core duo. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Core Duo is 32 bit processor and Core 2 Duo is 64 bit processor
OS X Lion, will only on 64 bit Intel processor Mac's.
The following Mac's that have 32 bit Intel “Yonah” processorsthat won't run OS X Lion.
iMac 4,1 Early (Jan-Sept) 2006 17"
iMac 4,1 Early (Jan-Sept) 2006 20"
iMac 4,2 Mid (July-Sept) 2006 17"
Mac Mini 1,1 (Feb-Sept) Early 2006
Mac Mini 1,1 (Sept-Aug) Late 2006
MacBook 1,1 13" (May-Nov 2006)
MacBook Pro 1,1 15" A1150 (Jan-May 2006)
MacBook Pro 1,2 17" A1151 (Aprl-Oct 2006)
MacBook Pro 1,1 15" A1175 (May-Oct 2006)
There is a difference between “Intel Core Duo” and “IntelCore 2 Duo” processors.
Look under your Apple menu > About this Mac > more information for the details -
I have Mac 10.9.5, Intel. I was working in iMovie, when message came up and said I do not have enough space on my hard disk.. I have several hundred GB available. All my ext. HD's appear on my screen. In "About this mac/storage" only my HD and two of the four external drives show up. The two ext. drives that show on "about This Mac" are full. I have done a disk utility check on every drive and they are fine. Also, the whole machine is very slow. I have rebooted also.

Yes 10.8.2 is the latest version of Mountain Lion. 10.7 was Lion and 10.6 was Snow Leopard.

When looking at my "About This Mac" it says that I have 60gb of space left on my hard drive, but when I go into finder to find all of these files there is not 300gb worth in anything I search, even searching, "All files on the Mac". Help!?
It says I have over 150 gigs of video on my hard drive. But I have gone through and deleted almost all of what shows up, still it says there is roughly the same amount on the hard drive. Where are these files? I want to delete them so I can have my hard drive clear.
Thanks for your help guys!Quote from the article.
Time Machine in OS X Lion includes a new feature called "local snapshots" that keeps copies of files you create, modify or delete on your internal disk. Local snapshots compliment regular Time Machine backups (that are stored on your external disk or Time Capsule) giving you a "safety net" for times when you might be away from your external backup disk or Time Capsule and accidentally delete a file.
So what makes a notebook any different then a desktop, other then with a desktop you might have your tm backup drive connected all the time.
The object here is to not indiscriminately delete files you need or want to keep. I personally have never deleted a file I wanted to keep.
In essence a backup is for catastrophic failure of your system. So it can be restored once that failure has been fixed. Not because you go in willy nilly and start deleting files. -
My imac running OS 10.6.8, and want to install Garmin software that needs OS10.7.
The latest upgrade Maverick requires a MAC dated 2007 or later. Where is the date... It is NOT in "About this Mac".
I feel an older upgrade than Maverick might be better for my machine?
Is it possible to upgrade to ie, 10,7? or another recommended upgrade.
How to proceed?Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion or Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply. -
Anyone - that "About this MAC" only gives the OS X Version Number and not the Name?
Is anyone else - that "About this MAC" only gives the OS X Version Number and doesn't also give out the Name?
*** version is Mountain Lion? Snow Leopard? Yosemite?? And how hard would it be to use the name AND version number when they refer to a product?
So What Do I have with 10.8.5 ?
PS [as I use this site for the first, I am glad to see for the first time ANYWHERE that the drop down box lists the OS X by name and number. APPLE, PLEASE DO THAT EVERYWHERE!A google search would have yielded the answer
10.8 is Mountain Lion.

Where are the files for the Backups that show up in About This Mac - Storage?
My new Macbook Pro 13 retina has 1TB flash drive. But despite my TimeMachine being in a TimeCapsule my Macintosh HD shows 277 Gb of space has Backups. What is this for? How can I delete it?OS X Lion and newer Mac OS X versions create local snapshots in portable Macs if Time Machine is enabled. See > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
You don't have to worry about. They are stored in a kind of volume named "MobileBackups", but they appear as stored in your hard drive. To delete them, open System Preferences > Time Machine, and turn off Time Machine. Then, turn it on. However, you don't need to delete them, as they will be deleted when your hard drive gets full -
"About This Mac" Storage Screen and Time Machine Question
Hello,
I've been poking around in Lion a bit, and noticed something odd...
When you go to About This Mac >> More info >> Storage, my external hard drive that only has my Time Machine backup on it is displayed entirely as "other" in the file-type breakdown. Thusly, all utilized space is shown as yellow, as opposed to the purple that would designate it as "backup" information.
Is there something wrong with my Time Machine backup, or are other people experiencing this as well? It just seems strange that the results of the built-in backup application are not recognized as a backup by Lion.
Thoughts?
Thanks,

Yes. The purple Backups refers to (some of ) the storage used for Local snapshots (on laptops, see #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions), and, apparently, Versions.
There are many other misleading and inaccurate things there, too.
