  • About This Mac doesn't display system serial number!

Hello. I've had this for a couple of months now and it wasn't up to now that it really started worrying me.
Just a month after I bought my MacBook, I had to send it in for repairs (logic board fried... in one month!) and after I received it, I noticed something strange. When I open  > About This Mac and look for my serial number... it just... doesn't show any. It shows either SystemSerumb or SystemSerialNumb. Why? How? What?
How can I write down my computer's serial number as it's supposed to be written? I know the number: I have it on the laptop's box and "under" the battery, so I won't write it wrong...
    Help!

There is no need to be concerned as software does not ask for serial numbers.
Software may look at existing hardware as CPU type or RAM or Disk space as well as OS version, previous installation, possible registration, but not the serial number.
Technically, a serial number is more a software designation of the hardware, not hardware itself.

  • About this mac shows more space used by apps

When i triple tap the "Applications" folder in the finder, it shows me that my apps are taking about 15 Go. However, the "apps" bar in "About this Mac" reveal that apps are taking me over 90 Go !!!
PS: I don't have any backups on my mac and i haven't set up time machine yet.

That Applications folder should be only what you added to it not what was in launchpad after initial start up of your Mac . 92GBS is a combination of original apps and what you added to your library Application Folder. This is how My Mac is working but it seems like a lot of space used for a 2013 MBP

  • Mac shows wrong storage information and 'desk is full' message

My MacBook Pro started giving me the 'desk is almost full' message lately, which eventually turned into 'desk is full'. I don't know how it happened or how I can find the files that account for the missing capacity; I tried using a few different applications (DIX and so) but all of them show the 9 gb or so for my own files. According to the storage feature from "about this mac," 234 gb are in the "Other" section.

    Hi joannnnnnnn,
If you are using a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with a solid state drive (SSD), you may notice some discrepancies in the available, used, and total storage reporting. If this is the case, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Mac shows wrong storage information

    Hi,
My macbook shows incorrect storage information, which is inconsistent with the available storage space.
    The storage maps shows that:
    App 119G with 179G free from 250 G
Which does not added up correctly.
I have tried to use disk repair in recovery mode but the storage is still wrong.
I'm using 10.10.1 OS X yosemite on my macbook
I do not use time machine.
Is there any way to solve this issue?
    Thank you.

  • Display Size Incorrect In About This Mac

    Hi
I just noticed that in the About This Mac > More Info > Displays the size of my iMac display is incorrectly shown. The resolution setting is correct as is the video card model but the size is shown as 16.5 inches instead of the 24 inches it should be as a 2008 24 inch iMac.
Anybody have any thoughts on what this means and how to correct it?
    Cheers
    Jeff

    Hi BDAqua
I may put this off a bit as the issue was present when booted in Safe Boot.
Seems that the issue is present for others. This thread is from someone who has an iMac with the same graphics card as mine:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4398260?start=0&tstart=0
    and discussed here:
    https://openradar.appspot.com/12016584
Interestingly, the jump from 10.7.4 to 10.7.4 feels about right for me in terms of the issue showing up.
Looks like there's no solution yet.
    Cheers
    Jeff

  • How do you activate a 10.10.3 download.  I have downloaded twice (2 gig each) and have restarted as instructed.  I have also rebooted. "About this Mac' still reports 10.10.2 installed and I do not have the new photo app.

I have downloaded 1010.3 twice (2+gig each).  The update window shows the 10.10.3 update has been installed, however, 'About this Mac' shows 10.10.2 installed and I don't have the new 'photo' app installed.  Once more, the quality of Apple software approaches that of Microsoft - letting the user debug instead of delivering the quality that used to be Apple.
How do I activate the downloaded update.

There may well be a problem with the update package.  I initially tried downloading the delta update (not the combo) from the Apple Support web site, and when I opened the package file, the installer ran but terminated almost immediately.  I restarted and only got the normal reboot process, not the "Installing software" display.  After restarting, I saw some evidence that the firmware updater was cleaning up some files, but nothing else appeared to have happened except that the 1.5Gb package file and a couple small subsidiary files had been left under /Library/Updates/_ManualUpdate.
I tried running the command line softwareupdate tool to see if it would recognize the already-downloaded package file (which is something you might also want to try before downloading again just in case it works), but no such luck.  I then relented and used App Store, and that downloaded again and then performed the update successfully.
Of course, then I had to horse around with turning off all the "photos in the cloud" nonsense, but that's another story.

  • About This Mac Storage shows wrong size

    Hello, the story so far
    Actions:
    - MBA early 2014 (128GB) maverick updated to yosemite in November 2014
    - fresh install of Yosemite via wifi in January 2015 - followed instructions as suggested here http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14243
    Consequences after fresh installation:
    - About This Mac > Storage shows total hard disk size 120GB, About This Mac > Storage shows 110GB
    - About This Mac > Storage shows approx 9GB of apps. The actual applications folder size is far, far, far less than 9GB as showed in Terminal.
    - About This Mac > Storage shows approx 1GB of data for videos, audio and photos. There are no photos, video, documents stored on MBA.
For the records, no device data was sync after fresh installation and the trash is being emptied securely.
I am new to MAC so I would be grateful if you could help me understanding why About This Mac > Storage is showing more data stored than Terminal and Finder and what I should do to rectify the discrepancy.
Many thanks of your understanding and support.
    Cheers, puzzled_me

Kappy, may thanks. No difference, Get Info for the folders returns same data size as About This Mac > Storage
On a different note I have noticed that there are two Library folders under harddrive. See screenshot attached.
System/Library (6.8GB) folder contains subfolders that are also contained under Library (2.7GB) folder.
Could that be the problem?? Is that normal to have two Library folders??
    Thank you for your help.

  • Macbook pro 15 discrete graphics not showing in the about this mac tab

I am new to osx. I was wondering why I couldnt find the discrete graphics info in the about this mac window. It simply says intel hd 4000. I was wondering whether or not I need some drivers for it.

I assume you mean under the "Display" tab when you click "About this Mac" > More Info...
This only shows the active graphics card. To see the full specs, open "System Information," either under "Overview" Tab > System Report, or from the Apple Icon in the menu bar by holding down the option key and clicking "System Information." Under hardware > Graphics/Displays

  • Storage values under about this mac displaying incorrectly, but amount of space used IS correct. Any ideas?

I noticed recently that the "storage" under "about this mac" is displaying incorrectly. It doesn't show the correct values for my photos, videos, and audio files. It classifies this data under "other". I have been searching all over the internet, I went to the Apple genius bar yesterday and they recommended I re-install OSX. I did and it still shows up incorrectly. They were baffled, said they never really came across this issue. I have tried re-indexing spotlight, that didn't seem to help.
The amount of storage used IS correct. It just doesn't show up under the correct categories in storage, under about this mac. Also, the computer seems to work fine. No real issues. It's a mid 2012 MBP. 500gb hard drive. Most recent OSX is installed.
I DO NOT think it is local snapshots, cause my backups category is small and the amount of space used and free is correct. I have downloaded omnidisk sweeper to confirm this.
I have seen a few posts on here and around the web referring to this, but no real answers. I have also reviewed Pondini's info on this to no avail.
    Does anyone have any ideas?!?!

    Also,
I had installed a version of parallels with windows 7, but deleted it. Would parallels be causing my computer to index incorrectly? I I used appcleaner to delete all the parallels files so I do not have it anymore.

  • How can I have ext hard disks show on "About this Mac/Storage" that are ousted and show on screen

I have Mac 10.9.5, Intel.  I was working in iMovie, when message came up and said I do not have enough space on my hard disk.. I have several hundred GB available.  All my ext. HD's appear on my screen.  In  "About this mac/storage" only my HD and two of the four external drives show up.  The two  ext. drives that show on "about This Mac" are full.  I have done a disk utility check on every drive and they are fine.  Also, the whole machine is very slow. I have rebooted also.

I have upgraded my MacBook Pro 15 late 2011 to 8Gb RAM, now when I go to about this mac in it more info it doesn't show AMD graphics card as it used to before, it just show  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB is that a problem that I need to worry about?
and in system report >> hardware >> Graphics/Display >> it shows both grafics card listed.

Some Mac's when the RAM is increased the Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics will bump itself up to the higher video RAM it takes, this seems to be what occured.
It also means the dedicated graphics card will be used less, but only so slightly less.
You obviously still should have both, you can test this by turning off Graphics Switching in Energy Saver, that will use the decicated AMD card all the time.
You can also run Cinebench and compare the scores here

  • "About This Mac" disc usage wrong.

In short I have a 480GB SSD by OWC. The audio alone, according to "About This Mac", is over 581.14GB... Something is obviously not adding correctly.
I must admit, I had a couple of iPods that I downloaded music from to a VMware running Mac OS 10.9.4. The host OS is something that I can't mention...
I used the Hudini for Mac on the 10.9.4 WMware OS to unhide the music.
Since I noticed this disc usage inaccuracy. I've deleted most of the music. Because at one point it was showing over 1TB for the audio.
I've also did a command R at start up and ran Disc Permission and Repair.
I also turned off Time Machine, reboot, turned TM back on, reboot. (Someone else had the opposite disc usage and this helped.)
My next thought is to delete the Mac OS 10.9.4 via VMware, as this was where I originally downloaded the music from an iPod. I went through the music and transferred over to the host OS the selection that I wanted to keep. When I Get Info on the music app via Mac OS X ssd ▸ Users ▸ KOT ▸ Music ▸ iTunes ▸ iTunes Media it comes up with a little over 17GB.
    Thank you,
    KOT

I really wish that I could say that this helped. But it made it worse.
It's now saying that I have 15.6TB of Photos, 4.77TB of Audio, 4.26TB of Movies and 34.6GB of Apps.
I tried it twice. Once when I was using the Mac, then when I saw that it made it worse. I did it again, though I left it in the "Don't spotlight" list, rebooted and finished what I had to do. When I was ready to be done with the computer. I removed it from the list and put the display to sleep. Came back a couple of hours later and found it the same way when I tried it the first time.
Now that the rest of the stuff, such as Photos, Movies and Apps are overly "used". I am beginning to think that it's a Y.... thing for right now.
    Thanks for your thought though.
    KOT
