About to be a new iMac user

Yes I am going to buy a new iMac and I have a few questions. Will Leopard allow me to install my adobe creative suite 2 or no. I know adobe's web site says they don't support creative suite 2 anymore. I'm wondering has anyone tried to install CS2 on leopard and have it work. I'm a student and I was going to get creative suite 3 at some point but I did not want to buy now due to the fact i'm buying a new mac. If anyone is using creative suite 2 could you please let me know if everything is working well.
Thanks,
Tony

If you have a windows version of ADOBE CS2 then it will not work on your Mac unless you run it via bootcamp. If you have a mac version i don't see why there would be any issues.
Also some Apple distributors offer student discount packages with Adobe software included.
You might be able to get both a new mac and Adobe cs3 for a considerable discount.

You need to Open iTunes and then click on Store in the Menu Bar.

  • New iMac user, can you use a fan to cool the back?

    Hi everone,
I'm a new iMac user, a new mac user full stop. I recently was given one for college because I'm dyslexic so I recived one to help with college work. I'm a P.C girl mostly so i'm very new to this system, but we do use these at college thou I avoided them like the plauge because I just didn't know how to use them.
ANYWAYS....I noticed that the back get's very hot, my desk is by the window of my room because it gets a little hot in my room at time's and I know my P.C would heat but so the window it was.
i was wondering if used an external fan behind the mac might help with the temp, nothing big just a small fan for the back of the computer like the one's you use in an office but allot smaller? is this a good idea or not?
thank you for takeing the time to read my post, I did read the other about hot mac's but it didn't have the answer I was looking for.
    Cap'Pixie xox

Just be sure it's fixed low enough to be aimed upwards. That way it won't prevent the hot air escaping from the upper exhaust by blowing it back in. It will be blowing dust around too, so keep the area as dust free as possible. Whether I need to run this fan depends on the intenal temps and how hot the back feels. But can aid considerably in cooling. Get iStat Pro.

I am about to purchase a new imac and have heard rumers about some major problems associated with these machines that Apple has not solved yet.

  • Brand new Imac user having trouble importing photos (jpgs)

I am a brand new iMac user and am having trouble importing some of my photos into my new computer.
    Here is my dilemma:
    * All of my pics are jpgs that were shot using a sony DSC-W50 digital camera.
    * All were backed up on my exteral harddrive from my old Sony PC.
    * I loaded all of them onto my new iMac into the "Photos" area
    * When I try to import them to the iPhoto library, I get a message that either says "already in the iPhoto library" or 'unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data"
    * I can open all of the photos that I get this error msg on in other photo programs so I know the files are photos and are good.
    HELP!

iPhoto is not an image viewer, it's a Database with built-in image viewer, lightweight editing and version control, and like any database, data needs to be imported. However, iPhoto will not import from the iPhoto Library Folder.
So, move the photos to the Desktop and then import them from there.
    Here's what happens next:
iPhoto will make a copy of them in the iPhoto Library Folder. There they will be put into the Originals Folder. Here's how the iPhoto Library Folder is organised:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
If you need any more asistance post more.
    Regards
    TD

I am about to buy the new iMac, but do I have to buy all the software I have in my old one, like Aperture, pages, etc.?

No, you don't. If you got it from the Mac App Store, log into it with the same Apple ID and redownload it for free. If you got it from CDs or DVDs, reinstall it from those; having the DVD version of a program does not get you a free download of it from the Mac App Store.

  • Set up new iMac user accounts & storage locations

I just made the switch from Windows PC to a new iMac  since it is still in the box I thought I would take some time to think about how I want to set it up before opening it and starting to dump all my files onto the new machine. I'd like to have an efficient setup and get it right from the start!
My current (PC) set up is this:
I have one 500Gb internal drive. Using Windows 7 I have four user accounts: me, my wife, and one each for the kids with parental controls. I would like to duplicate this setup, and I understand OS X Lion can do this.
Now the messy part: under my account I have a bunch of docs (word, excel files, PDF's, etc, let's call this stuff "data"), a couple thousand songs, a bunch of pics and some movies. Email etc too. When I log into my account I have a my documents folder with my data files. I have an iTunes folder and in it a bunch of music. Some is from ripped cd's, some from iTunes store, some from amazon mp3 store. When I open iTunes I have a library with all of the music avail on my machine. Oh, I also have an iPad 2 and when I plug it in, it syncs with my library and apps and movies etc. I open Thunderbird and I get my email. So far so good.
When my wife logs in she has her "my documents" folder with her data. She opens thunderbird and gets her email, not mine. More mess though: she doesn't like half the music I like, and she doesn't want to see it. When she opens iTunes she gets a library with fewer songs available, and I'm moderately sure that her songs are *copies* of what's in my music folder. Well some are anyway, some point to the music in my folder (I was not very consistent in how I added music to her library). She has an iPad 1 that syncs to her library, with only a fraction of the apps that I have. She has her own pictures too (different from mine - basically she would copy pics from the camera to her "space" but I wouldn't know it, and wouldn't see them).
The kids accounts are relatively "clean" - just accounts with parental controls for web browsing (online kids games) etc. EXCEPT my daughter has an iPod shuffle (2Gb) and a small library of songs. I *think* this library points to my files but hey might be copies.
I *dont* want to end up with a ton of duplicate files on my new machine like I *know* I have on my windows machine. It just eats up too much space.
What I want to do is have one place for all of the pictures to go, and all of the music files to go, and every time there are new pics or music, it all goes there. But I want my wife to have a "smaller" music library than me (she just plain doesn't want the "clutter" of seeing my music and having to sort through it to check it/uncheck it to put it on her iPad - she's a clutter-free freak even with digital files). For photos I want to use one iPhoto library so that if she goes in there and tags some phots with some keyword or event or adds new pics, then I see those things when I open my iPhoto (I honestly don't even know how to use iPhoto to manage my pics, my iMac is till in the box). I want her to have her data under her login and my data under mine, etc. In short, there things I want shared between the two of us, and things I don't, without duplicate files eating up the space on my 500Gb internal hard drive.
Additionally I am considering a 500Gb external drive, and rather than using it for straight up storage, using it as a time machine backup of the whole system. I am looking at a FireWire800 drive for better performance.
I'd like to get this right the first time, but don't know enough about how os x works/sets up user accounts, and/or the best, most efficient way to set up the new iMac from the get go. I don't know if I should set up all four accounts first, then add my data/music/pics manually, or use the "migration assistant" (I have read a bit about using it but honestly don't know how it works, or if it will do what I want).
Perhaps I could just print out this email and pay for apple one-to-one service, but I thought I'd check here first! Sorry for such a long post - but I am hoping I'm not the only one who has wanted to make the switch and start off on the right path! And it's a lot easier to learn from other peoples experience than to figure it all out on my own!
PS: don't know if it matters much, but I also hav an iPhone that I sync with my iTunes, and I'm concerned about losing the configuration/apps/music/movies on both my iPad and my iPhone when I make the switch. Thoughts? Should I be concerned? How do I do it correctly?

You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. Give them a call and they can help you set it up, however to be honest you are way over thinking this, those old PC habits die hard! My recommendation is, take it out of the box, read the manual carefully and turn the thing on following the on-screen instructions and start enjoying your new iMac.

  • New imac user adobe CS question

Hello all. I've just upgraded my computer and brought a brand new imac....I have a student version of adobe creative suite premium 1 - I got it when they had just come out with creative suite so it is a few years old. Can I install this on new computer?? it is a mac version but is Leopard too advanced for it?? This may seem like an obvious question but I just wanted to check to see if there was anyway of not spending lots of money seeing I've just spent loads on the new mac!!
Also if i do need to buy creative suite 3, does anyone know of anywhere in the uk that gives teacher discount? I got education discount when I purchased the imac but all the websites that I've seen that do education versions of adobe products only give money off for the students and not the teachers!

I'd like to ditto your question. I've upgraded to CS from the student version I have on my G4. In the bowels of my memory however I seem to recall reading something a while back about Adobe's PhotoShop suite not being designed to run on an intel Mac. The information seems reliable that the new iMacs are coming out next week and I want one. I hate to have to spend an additional bunch of money to pay for the most recent version of the Adobe PhotoShop suite if I can use my old one. I came to this forum hoping to find an answer to your question, Emma.

  • New iMac user alert * how do I separate RAW files from jpeg files in iPhoto?  So that I can open them in cs5?

I installed cs5 last night, and I am trying to open just the raw files that I imported into iphoto, but cant seem to find a way to separate them.  In ps, when I go to open them up, they all appear as if they are jpegs, even though they sit in pairs (jpeg and raw).  Any help would be great!  I am a new mac user,  and I think I am in way over my head here.  I didnt think this would be that tough, I usually adapt to software pretty well.  thanks!!!  Oh and any other links that you could recommend to me would be wonderful...seeing as though I am going to need the help!!!

There is an advanced option to send the raw file. Root through the preferences. You can also export (to the desktop, say) and set the kind to original.
To *find* your raw files you can use a smart album.

  • A few questions from a new iMac user!

So far I am loving this computer! However there are a few things that I can not figure out how to do and really dont have time to go to the store for a class at the moment. So hopefully you will be able to help me out.
    1. We have iWorks installed and I am trying to make a simple calendar to hand out to my students with information about due dates and such. Previously I was able to do this on Word but I can not figure out how to do this here!
    2. How do I copy and paste?
    3. With this new mouse how do I get it so that there is a right click?
Thank you all so much and I am sure you will see me on here plenty!

Pages, presuming you're referring to Apple's iWork suite, doesn't have a template for a calendar included. There are some suggestions in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6949516
You might also consider using iCal. You could set up a calendar just for student dates and then print that calendar only.
    3. With this new mouse how do I get it so that there is a right click?
You'll need to go into the Mouse system preferences and define the right-click action. The default is for the "left-click" and "right-click" both to be a standard click.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using existing external drives (am a new iMac user) & photos

I am a new convert to iMac from PC this weekend. Have searched support questions but not finding a match.
What I have is two portable external drives - a 160 gig for all my photos (all sorted into annual folders then monthly folders, close to its limit around 140gig), and a 300 gig drive for "everything else" ie movies, music, documents etc etc.
I have always kept everything on these drives - never been a fan of keeping anything on actual computers.
Anyway - today I downloaded photos from camera to the "finder".
Then I plugged in the 160 gig drive and in a separate Finder screen I have tried to create a Feb sub folder in my 2012 folder. So I can drag or copy todays photos into it from the mac.
But a) its not letting me create a new folder - actually I cant see any options to do so.
    b) its not letting me drag or copy paste the photos into any folder on the external 160 drive.
Any tips - please in really plain english as after 20 years of Window use I feel like I am learning Apple english today. Its all a bit foreign !
A few people on facebook suggested "reformatting" the external drives but to be honest that scare the heck out of me as to me reformatting basically means risking losing everything on those drives.
Another problem to do with the photos I downloaded off the camera today:
What is known as "properties" in Windows usually shows me exactly what date and time the photo was take, when it was uploaded, and when it was edited.
Half the photos I downloaded today off the camera do show their Info as that - but half show their info as "today" and I know they are several weeks old.
As I rely on the integrity of the photos "properties for all my sorting - I am not sure how or why it is removing the correct information and replacing it with "today".
Any help for a real newbie is appreciated.
    Thanks

NTFS (New Technology File System) is the standard file system of Windows NT, including Windows 2000,Windows XP, and all their successors to date.
NTFS supersedes the FAT file system as the preferred file system for Microsoft’s Windows operating systems.
SW = software. Do NOT use software to convert your data.
The Mac operating system uses HFS Extended (Journaled), and until you reformat your external hard drive to that (using Disk Utlity) you will not achieve full functionality.
Obviously that should have been done before you installed anything so you now need to clear all data off the external hard drive (by copying to another hard drive already formatted correctly) and then copying back. Easier still, format a new hard drive correctly, copy existing data to that, reformat the older hard drive and keep for further backups.
Kinda wished they had mentioned all that before I spent so much cash!
A little bit of reserarch and preparation before purchasing would not have gone amiss!

  • New iMac user needs pointing in the right direction

Anyway as I said at the start I am new to all this and having a little play before work I kinds struggled to understand what to do.
Its there an idiots guide I can use or one recommend?

Could I stream them from the imac/external hard drive to the PS3?
    Is it easy to setup?

  • New iMac user.... how do you delete a downloaded program

I downloaded Firefox for my computer because i couldn't get my financial software from Ameritrade to work on safari. However, their tech support helped me get it working with Safari and so I want to delete FireFox.
I don't know how. I'm not sure if it came with its own uninstaller... and if it did I don't know how to find it... (no start button to find the program).
Also I have a downloads folder... it has some spreadsheets for excel in it I no longer need, how do I delete them? (I tried dragging them to the trash but that didn't work)
    Thanks!!
    Susan

Historically I've used spotlight to find any related files(preferences, etc). They can be deleted from there.
If you try it make sure to look at the search criteria and include system files.
The new spotlight is quite a bit different and I'm not sure it's not very straight forward.
There are a couple of third party apps that are supposed to monitor and "uninstall".
    Never used on though.
