About to buy a Time Capsule...

Looks a great piece of kit but just got a few questions before I buy...
Will Time Machine / Capsule backup my Firefox bookmarks, settings and cookies?
Will Time Machine install all of the 3rd party software etc that I have installed since buying my mac when performing a restore from backup?
What advantages does the Capsule have over using a normal USB HD with TM apart from the wireless functionality?
Is there anything TM won't back up? I like the way how if I was to ever loose or break my iPhone, when plugging in a replacemnt into iTunes for the first time it is restored EXACTLY how the old one was, is this similar with TM & TC?
Thanks
James

Yes. Unless you tell it not to, it will back up you entire system, except for some things not needed to do a restore, like system work files, most caches and logs, trash, etc.

Yes, if you restore your entire system. You can restore apps separately, but if they're apps installed with special installers, they likely have other files in other places, including your system folders. Unless you know what and where all those other files are, and restore them, too, the app probably won't work right, if at all.

None. If you have a desktop Mac, a good USB (or, better, FireWire) drive will be much less expensive, faster, and more reliable than WIFI.

Yes (but it isn't automatic). The exception is, if you're running Windoze on your Mac. If via BootCamp, that partition is not formatted for a Mac and TM cannot back it up. If you run it via Parallels, vmWare, or similar, TM can back it up, but the backups may be very large, so it usually isn't recommended. There are 3rd-party apps for that.

A wireless printer connects to the network just like your computer, or iPhone/iPad, etc. connects using wireless.
The printer must be set up intially to scan to "find" available wireless networks, then your specific wireless network needs to be selected. Then the password for the network needs to be entered.
Once the printer is configured to join the network, it is always connected to the network. No further configuration is required.

I have an existing new belkin modem router which works fine with quiet a few wired and wireless products in my house. My question is if i buy a time capsule can i put it in another room and wirelessly connect it to the belkin modem router, I would then just like my macbook pro and (imac future purchase) to wirelessly back up to it???????????

Your will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the TIme Capsule to clear out the current network settings and then reconfigure it to "join" your wireless network using the AirPort Utility setup application.
To perform the Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule....
Pull the power cord from the back of the device
    Wait a few moments
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule and keep holding it an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power cord back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 25-30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    On your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Continue
Follow the guided setup and choose the "join" option when it appears duriing the setup
You will need to know the exact type of wireless security that the Belkin router is using to enter this information during the setup of the Belkin. Otherwise, the Time Capsule cannot join the network, and you will receive an error message after the configuration process.

What about when using the "Time Capsule" HD as the external disk, especially when it is connected by ethernet cable? I'm having trouble getting it to work at all. Don't need it to work as anything else, other than a ethernet connected Time Machine backup. Already have a wireless network that works fine so no need to mess with it. We get the internet via cable company and their modem is upstairs and the Time Capsule is downstairs in the basement. The latest error message was about it could not backup as it was already in use (should have written it down before clicking OK and moving on.

    See if this helps...

  • If i buy a time capsule in europe it will work in the us?

If i buy a Time Capsule in Italy it will work back in the US?

    Yes, BUT..
Apple regionalise them.. and the European wireless rules are different to the US. And a Euro one, will not allow you to select US as the current region for wireless.
Mostly Europe has more range than US, and therefore you can use it illegally in the US.. but as long as you stick to the allowed channels you will have no problem.
That implies btw that you do not leave the channels on auto.. you should always manually set them.. otherwise the router is just as likely to choose the illegal channels since they are not used and it will auto discover the lack of wifi happening.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
And compare for 2.4ghz and 5ghz.
Overall it is much better to buy in the market you will use it in.
AFAIK apple do not allow change of region.
I figured out how to change them.. but it requires a soldering in a serial port.. you don't want to know!!

  • TS3972 How can I access the files(movies, music, etc) in my Apple Time Capsule(4th Gen) from my Apple TV(3rd Gen). This is very frustrating Apple has not provided a basic feature, and me buying the Time Capsule and Apple TV is an complete waste of bucks.

I have an Apple TV (3rd Gen) and Apple Time Capsule (4th Gen). How can I access Movies and Music stored in the Time Capsule from Apple TV. This is very  n't give frustrating that Apple doesn't give their customers with an straight forward access to their customers in between their own products. Iam repenting that buying these products is completely waste of bucks. Appreciate your help...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Time Capsule is clearly announced as a router with a hard drive to make backups, not to store anything and share it with your Apple TV.
To access to movies and music from the Time Capsule, note that the Apple TV can only access to them if they are stored in your iTunes library, so you will have to put your movies and music into iTunes to access to them, and then, put your iTunes library on the Time Capsule in order to access to your data from there

Get it. You will freikin' love it.
Don't be concerned about the negativity flying around here. After all, this is a forum / messaging board. People naturally tend to take the initiative to post when they have problems.
They most probably won't change any hardware; just firmware & in fact, the very first public Time Capsule firmware update was released last night.
Unfortunately I've learned the hard way & seen it many times before; The fact of the matter is that PEACE OF MIND IS PRICELESS. PERIOD.
Knowing that my years of digital video + pics + LOTS of work is being backed up lets me sleep at night.
Not only does Time Machine allow you to restore individual files, it also allows for full disk partitions, even your bootable partition (boot to Time Machine to restore).
Do it. Just do it. 1 TB, there's no other way.

  • I am going to buy a time capsule it it will work on European 220v as the Mac Book Pro does.  Can anyone tell me if it does when you use a plug adapter.  Thanks

Will the Time Capsule work on European 220v if it was bought in the US.  Do you need a transformer or just a plug adapter?  Thanks

The Time Capsule will run on 100-240 volts and 50-60 Hz so you only need a plug adapter, not a transformer with this device.
For more details, look under the Electrical heading on the specifications of the Time Capsule.

  • Question before buying a time capsule

I currently have an AirPort Extreme as my router. My external hard drive which I use for backups is dying and I am considering getting a Time Capsule to replace it. But, I need to know how loud the drive in the Time Capsule is. The router is in my bedroom and neither my wife nor I want to hear whirring and clicking at night. Or could I keep the AirPort Extreme as the main router and add the Time Capsule as a repeater of some sort (which would be nice as  I could use a signal boost in my living room).
    Thanks,
    Andy

A few minutes after a backup to the Time Capsule, the hard disk goto sleep mode. So the Time Capsule makes absoluetly no noise.
The Time Capsule disk will periodically spin up and run a check of the Time Capsule. You may not have noticed this. You cannot predict when this will happen, but it will occur much more often as the disk storage capacity approaches 70-80% full.

  • Why buy a Time Capsule ? Advice Needed

    Hello,
I am thinking of getting a new Samsung UE55D800 television and it is WiFi enabled and therefore I want to get the most out of it.
I know that Apple TV will stream anything from my MacBook onto the TV that is in iTunes but my Mac is slowly getting fuller and fuller and therefore I may want to move some of the the movie content off then onto an external hard drive.
So, what I was thinking is can I store content on the Time Capsule without it being on my MacBook but also have access to it whenever I want through my Mac and through the wi-fi on my tv?
Will I be able to have the TV to talk to the Time Capsule and play stuff from there and I will I be able to have my MAC to talk to the Time Capsule and play content from there?
Hope you can help me on this and give me your opinion on the matter and any other tips you may have to get the most of my tv.
    Thanks
    Neil

Apple doesn't support an external disk connected to the AirPort Extreme, so it couldn't work. Time Capsule is a router with a hard disk inside, and you can store files on it from a Mac or PC

  • Which to buy?  Time capsule or Airport Extreme with USB drive(s)?

I'm getting either a TC or an Airport Extreme with an external drive.
    Archive:
I noticed that TC can archive to an external drive. It seems this can be handy for creating off-site backups. Can I do this with a drive on Airport Extreme (with a powered hub and another drive)? Or do I need to move the drive to a Mac and copy there? Or should I use a network backup instead in either case? I guess this is my main question: Can archive work with Airport Extreme?
    Mounting:
Is mounting the Airport Extreme for WiFi range any easier than the TC?
    Drive failure:
Is the TC drive likely to fail over the next couple years? And the other way, if the TC breaks, is the drive something I can use elsewhere? I'm a little concerned about having all my eggs in one basket.
    Other:
Anything I should be aware of in making this decision?

+Are there any constraints in the orientation of TC that the AirPort Extreme does not have?+
No, not really as long as you give either device plenty of airspace as they both tend to run warm to very warm. I thought mounting the AirPort Extreme might improve the signal strength a bit, but it made no measurable difference for me.
    +Is the TC significantly heavier?+
The Extreme is under 2 pounds, the TC comes in a bit over 3 pounds.
+Is mounting on a pegboard bad for the HD?+
I think you may be asking if you can mount it vertically. That's not a problem and the Apple store even sells wall mounts for either device.
+Yikes. I got bad info. I read the "unsupported" constraint was dropped a couple versions ago. I thought all the comments on this were referring to the older versions of AirPort Extreme.+
Here's the Apple document. Nothing changed with Snow Leopard and I saw a specific Snow Leopard document about this...just can't find it at the moment. I'm sure other forum regulars will confirm as well if they see this post.

+Is there a list of file servers that Time Machine is compatible with?+
Sorry, I don't have first hand knowledge on that and my policy is to only offer advice on things that I've done myself. That question might be worth a separate post since few people will see this question buried where it is.

  • New vs. Old Model of Time Capsule... Advantages?

I'm about to buy a Time Capsule and see there is a close-out model, MB277LL/A and a new model, MB765LL/A. But I'm not seeing any real comparisons of the two. Are there enough new features in the new model to go that way, versus save $150 or so and go the older model? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Acutally these are two separate features of the new model. Dual band keeps the connection from slowing down if someone connects using a computer that only supports the slower connection. Older routers default to the slower connection speeds if there are any G clients.
Guest networking works on both connections. Your guests could be using the same radio to connect as you, but it will appear that they are on a different network. They will also not be able to see any of the computers on your network and also not any of the computers on the "guest" network, unless you have enabled this on the Time Capsule.
If you have any devices that use 802.11G and newer devices that use 802.11n then it is definitely worth the $150. Sharing your internet with friends without compromising security is nice too.
I did notice that connections seem stronger than the Airport Extreme that I replace that shipped the same time as the old Time Capsule.

  • Time Capsule features?

    Hi,
I'm about to buy a Time capsule 2 tb but I have a few questions before...
Can I use my hp psc 1315 all-in-one printer wirelessly with it even if it actually need a wire? Do I only have to plug it in the time capsule? Any other requirements or setup steps I must know?
Can I use time machine with my iMac of 1 tb on a Time capsule of 2 tb and also use the time capsule as an external storage device? If yes how much storage capacity remains?
Is it kind of a rooter? does any type of internet connection works? If my D-Link actually work, will it replace it easily?
I know that we can make a wi-fi network with it, but if I plug the iMac on it with Ethernet a wire will the data transfer be faster?
    I think that'all...
    Thanks a lot

    1. You can generally print fine.. do not expect other functions to work.. if you want a network printer for scanning or faxing etc.. buy a new network printer that you plug in by ethernet or use wireless.. not USB.
    2. Yes you can use 2TB TC with a 1TB disk.. no problem.. how fast the 2TB fills depends on the amount of large files you keep moving around.
You should not use TC for external storage. .it is a target device for Time Machine. There is no backup on the TC.. so files stored there will be lost if the device is broken, damaged, corrupted, fails etc. Apple offer replacement only during warranty. no service, no fixing no parts.
    3. TC is basically an apple airport extreme router with a hard disk inside.. it is much more a wireless router than it is a NAS.
It can usually be used in bridge in the network. That is the easiest way.. but if you have a bridged modem then it can work as the main router.
    4. Yes, it has 3 gigabit LAN ports exactly as AEBS and is a better and faster by ethernet than wireless.
Read up what a TC is and how TM works.
