About to buy Quad G5 - ? about RAM kits and Airport Card

Hi! I don't need it (current G5 dual 2ghz runs great), but boy do I want it!!
So, I am looking on MWarehouse and MConnection since they have $200 rebates on the G5. I called one of the stores mentioned above and they told me that I couldn't order the machine with the airport / blutooth card installed... that I would have to build through Apple. Huh? Strange! I forgot to ask if they sell it and I could install it (easy, I know). That would be silly of them not to sell it.
Ok... now RAM. So many choices. I think I want to throw in 4 extra GB's... that would be two 2GB RAM kits. I found such a variance in price, it makes me nervous. Will 2 of these kits suffice? ---
KINGSTON 2GB KIT FOR APPLE POWERMAC -- $265 each kit
MFG#: KTA-G5533/2G
(it says 2 modules... so they must be 1GB each?)
VS.
Kingston memory - 2 GB ( 2 x 1 GB ) - DDR -- $319 each kit
Memory - 2 GB ( 2 x 1 GB ) - DDR - 400 MHz / PC3200
MFG#: KTA-G5400/2G
(is this one better for the little extra?)
So, with either of these, I'd be using up 4 of the 8 slots, right? For a total of 4.5GB RAM.

i went through a similar 'ordeal' just before buying, thank god i read up a bit though, i've saved myself hundreds of dollars by not buying RAM and 2nd Hard Drive through apple, for the same price as 4GB i am able to get 8GB, and the exact same RAM as what apple use -- apple really overcharge in some areas!!
I decided to wait until i recieved the apple to see exactly what ram they use and try match it. i ordered 2GB from apple, otherwise i've had to have either 2x256MB sticks or 2x512mb sticks, and would have to go through the hassle of selling them on if i wanted the maximum 8GB (anything above 8GB obviously involves 2GB sticks, and you'll have a heart attack seeing the price for just one of them).
so i don't know about in the US, but the G5 i got here in the UK (assembled in Ireland) uses Samsung 4200 Ram, and i've been able to find the exact same ram on ebay and some websites, and at just under half the price apple sells them for. Otherwise from what i've read most people recommend Crucial, which is a bit more expensive, which is probably why apple don't use them!!
also the Airport issue, just do as you are doing and get it pre-built through apple, i thought it was just some PCI card or something, but it's actually a pretty nifty looking grey strip (antennae) on the back, and there seems to be some wiring that goes behind and underneath the main CPU housing.. i'm sure it wouldn't be too tricky a job for someone to self install, but i myself wouldn't have liked to try, when apple do it for little extra

  • Question about OS upgrade and AirPort

I'm kind of in a sticky spot. I just bought a new MacBook Pro and AirPort base station and want to go wi-fi at home. I have a G5 desktop, and want to keep it running as a backup system, but don't have an AirPort card installed in it. I'd like to hook it up the base station to my cable modem and tower via USB, but in order to hook it up I have to have at least 10.4 running on my tower and I'm only at 10.3.9. My printer has asked me not to upgrade to Leopard yet, as it doesn't work well with their system (until their ugrade happens...which could be tomorrow and could be months from now). And I can't buy an upgrade to Tiger at this point now that Jaguar is out. Any suggestions?

I ran into a similar problem. I sold my powerbook (with wireless) and bought a used PowerMac (no wireless). So i went to the apple website and bought a refurbished Airport Extreme card for 29 dollars. Installation was a snap and now I'm online. This works under Panther (10.3.X), Tiger (10.4.X) and Leopard (10.5.X).
    Here's the link:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nplm=F8 881LL/A
NOTE: This card will NOT work with any G5 newer than the Early 2005 Model. Newer machines have a combined Airport+Bluetooth card that is not user servicable.

  • About to purchase and Airport Extreme Bases Station

I currently run a Netgear DG834G which is a combined ADSL modem and wireless router all in one. I aim to get the new AEBS. But of course it has no modem. So the solution is to either buy an ADSL modem or otherwise use the Netgear as a modem only. So the questions are:
    1. Will this work? I intend to turn off the Netgear wireless access point
    2. Do I need to turn off NAT on the Netgear?
The advantage of this setup is that I can then use WDS with the AEBS and my existing AX.
    Appreciate some help.

    1. Will this work? I intend to turn off the Netgear wireless access point
    Yes
    2. Do I need to turn off NAT on the Netgear?
    No

  • Question about open network and Airport

    Hi,
in my school there is a open network that allows me to surf the web with my MacBook, but my room has a very bad location so for me to connect to the network I have to put my MacBook in the window of the room. I always try to connect from inside the room but I don't have signal available. My question is: can I use some sort of Airport extreme, express or generic Wireless Router to capture the signal in the window and then send it to the inside of my room??? Any suggestions, websites? I have no access to the router (no admin access to configure).
    Thanks!
PS: Sorry, english it's not my first language (writing from Chile)...
    Best,
    AUP

Do you need to be wireless in your room?
If not then an ethernet wireless bridge would be a possibility such as the Linksys WET54G.
If you want to be wireless you could use a Linksys WET54G to pick up the signal from the Window and then connect a wireless access point (such as the Airport Express or any cheap 802.11g wireless access point) to the WET54G for wireless access.

  • Question about Time Capsule and Airport Express co-existence

I have a new 3TB ME182LL/A Time Capsule attached to my wired home LAN, in bridge mode.  It works fine both as an access point on the upper floors of my home and as a Time Machine device. I also have an Airport Express, whose function in my network is solely to control my whole-house audio system from ITunes. I don't need, want, or use the wireless networking features of the Airport Express. I just have an audio cable running from it to my stereo, and an Ethernet patch cable connects it to my wired LAN.  The network mode in the Airport Express is set to "off".  Historically, the Airport Express has worked fine in this wired lan mode.  However, I unplugged it at some point while having some initial trouble deploying the new Time Capsule and only turned it back on today.  After turning it back on I observed something strange. My speedy wireless connection upstairs via the Time Capsule became slow. And when I launched Airport Utility, it drew a network diagram which showed my Time Capsule as a CLIENT of the Airport Express. In other words, the network diagram showed Internet at the top, then a vertical line down the the Airport Express, then the Time Capsule below that.  The correct / desired diagram would be the Time Capsule and Airport express as peers.  I connected to the Airport Express and verified that network mode was set to "off" but the incorrect network diagram persisted (as did poor wireless performance) until I unplugged the Airport Express.  After I did that, the Airport Utility drew the network correctly, although of course it showed a yellow caution sign next to the Airport Express, since it was down. And my wireless speed / reliability returned to normal. What is going on here?

The automatic setup in the airport utility has changed something.
Is the line down to the TC from the express dotted.. in other words is wireless??
    Funny stuff happens.
Please post the screenshots of the 3 pages from the airport utility setup for both airport express and TC..
Make sure wireless is set to off in the express.
Both should be set to dhcp on the internet tab and both set to off bridge mode on the network tab.
So for example the bridge on the network tab.
The summary page can also be a help.
There is a half summary page when you click the item in the airport utility.
There is also a fully summary page, when you hold option key and double click the TC icon for example.

  • Question about Itunes account and gift cards

My question is that if I log into my itunes account on a different computer than i usully use, can I access it later on my normal computer, or do I have to reedem it on the same computer that I originally put the gift card on? please help!

You can log into the store on any PC that has iTunes installed and see your balance.
You do realize though, if you download something on that PC you will need to copy it over to your normal PC? Such as byusing a memory stick or your iPod put into manual mode.
You only get one download. You can't re-download things to multiple PCs.

  • Equium M40x-189: Question about the HDD and graphic card upgrade

Hi folks just a few quick questions.
    1. can a second hard drive be fitted to the afore mentioned notebook?.....it came with a 60gb HDD
2.can a graphics card such as an ati or geforce mobile/go be fitted instead of the onboard graphics?
any answers would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
As was said before, there is no way to install a 2nd harddrive physically on the machine without it being external. And this model does not have a seperate video card, it is integrated on the motherboard. Which means it would not be possible to upgrade it. Unfortunate as it is, best you can do is increase shared memory in bios and under your virtual memory settings. The Qosmio series from Toshiba does include a 2nd hard drive bay for 2 hdd's though, as well as some have seperate video cards so you can even possibly upgrade those as well. But not the Equium M40x. Have a great day.

  • After Effects CS5  Ram, Codecs and Graphic card

hi im using AF CS5  with all latest updates. I have few questions
i have problem with codecs included in CS5. could please someone tell me why when i try to "render  que" and i tried every possible codec included in AF cs5 the output is rubbish like hell. i been reading googling etc some on Adobe forums, some people say use 32bit instead 8bit, other say use this codec instead that one another say maybe maybe hmmm maybe .../.. let me think ahhh this codec isnt supported in AF cs5 yet it will be in next 2025 release.
could please someone tell me what codec should i use to make output look like standard video instead crappy sh**t?
ram preview work great no problems when i save on my desktop ram preview, it use auto  AVI WRAW (1gb/min)  and the video look great im satisfied.
when i checked add to render que codecs under avi, wraw isnt included so i cant use it but why the hell ram preview use this codec?
when i use quick time mpeg avi etc codecs included in cs5 the output look like i dont even know how to describe it look very bad. i tried also encode the shi**y output trough media encoder tried h264 etc tried to use other third party software to correct AF bad output and nothing helped and im tired.!!!!!
how can Adobe sale something crapp that doesnt work ?!!!
    where is WRAW ?
what codec should i use to make my 2 min clip look good ?
another thing i got with AF thing called media encoder could please someone tell me why the hell i cant encode AVI movie in it ??? and then make out of it FLV or MPEG etc ?
the result after making out of avi flv or mpeag etc  is that the sound disappear probably everyone in Adobe know it. could you please sort it out ?!!!!
why when i use free encoding software such as mediacoder etc no problem with AVI decoding encoding etc?
Another Question i have 4x ATI HD4850 installed so i would like to use it right ?? why? cuz everyone on earth know that normally graphic cards are designed for graphics.. not when you use Adobe products. Adobe preffer to make people buy 280gb of ram and 20 x Q9000 quad core.
why the f***K open GL After Effects doesnt work ???? just dont ask me what opengl ver do i have !!!! when i use open gl the rendering is slower with Gpu than than using the CPU whys that? why it isnt in MAYA ??? etc
people buy product people expect it to work right ?not install it then install all plugins you need, then try try and try to make AF work. AF remaind me Linux  still use it sometimes, when you install ubuntu you need a bit of time to make your graphic card work sound etc many of your devices wont never work cuz they arent supported no drivers or buggy drivers. the thing about linux is that it is free.
Adobe cost money so people expect it to work i dont have time to wait or try to make it work for the next 5 years !!!!!

If you're looking for help this is a great place to be. Just maybe dial back the "adobe sucks" rhetoric a bit. The folks here are  extremely helpful but I think they're all volunteering their time so try to keep that in mind. Nothing wrong with complaining and/or suggesting improvements. Just try to respect the process and be patient. If you ask one or two specific questions (i know you did re: sound in .avi files) you'll get help faster.
wish I knew why OpenGL for rendering was still so bad. I was told long time ago "just don't use it for rendering" and I've followed that advice ever since. Maybe someday it'll be useful. Meanwhile it works great for everything else inside AE so I don't condemn the whole idea of OpenGL in Adobe products. Every CS release supports it more and more...they'll get there. For now just don't use it for rendering and you'll be fine.
At least you're using CS5 and can take advantage of all your RAM. just think, a few short years ago...
Sorry I can't help you with your missing audio in .avi. I generally render to QT or an img sequence and then layer my audio on top of that.
If you find an answer post back - I'm sure it will help someone else.
    Good luck!

  • I have purchased a Imac G5 20" Computer. I does not have wireless, so I purchased and airport card to install. after opening the computer, there is no metal stand to install the card. i ordered a stand on Ebay. Do I need to buy an antenna too?

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I am a first time Apple user and first time Support Community user.
If anyone has any other upgrade suggestions or something you would do to this unit, please let me know.
Mainly bought it to interface with an iPad down the road, but i need wireless internet.
The ethernet cable works fine but not in area where I want the computer.
    Thanks !!!

Yes, you will need an antenna as well.  You will probably want to add more memory, you can have up to 2GB (an iSight can take 2.5GB), and depending on the size of the drive, you might want to put a bigger one in as well.

  • Question about RAM CL

Hi guys. I'm finalizing my PC build and have a question about ram CL that I cannot find answers to on the tweakers page here. http://ppbm7.com/index.php/news/planning?showall=&start=3
I'd like to use these two ram sticks as an example.
    Transcend JetRam™ High-Performance 8GB DDR3-1333 240-Pin Module : CL9, 6-Layer PC Board
    Transcend JetRam™ High-Performance 8GB DDR3-1600 240-Pin Module : CL11, 6-Layer PC Board, Ultimate cross-platform compatibility and stability
My question is, which is better for video editing? On the one hand we have 1333mhz at with a CL of 9. On the other, we have faster 1600mhz ram, but at a higher CL of 11. Now, I'm not one to get caught up in the technicalities like it may seem, but I do want to understand these so I can make informed decisions, especially when price is a factor. In this case however, they are the same price...

    From http://ppbm7.com/index.php/news/cpu-mobo
Make up your mind about the number of memory sticks you want to install. On the X79 platform, do you want to use 4 slots, or do you want to fully populate all 8 slots? This is very important especially with i7-3930K / 4930K CPU's, which have a rather finicky memory controller.
Make a shortlist of quad or octo packs of memory sticks in the size you want, limiting yourself to ONLY sticks using 1.5V or less.
Check the motherboard manufacturer's site QVL list to see which of the sticks on your shortlist are approved. Pay attention to the number of slots for which they are approved. Some modules are approved for 4 slots only, others for fully populated use.
Check the memory manufacturer's site QVL list to see which motherboards are approved.
Try to establish if there are users that have been successful in using the sticks on your shortlist and delete any that were giving trouble to others. NewEgg can be a good source for that.
Now that you have a very short shortlist, contact the Technical Support departments of both the motherboard manufacturer and the memory manufacturer and ask them to confirm or deny the compatibility of the memory modules in the quantity you need.
If both confirm compatibility, check the physical height of the modules including heatsink in relation to the intended CPU cooler. Do they fit without modding?
In general, only buy matched sets of memory sticks. There are too many different sticks with the same type number, that will cause grief when bought as four single sticks, but you limit the risk by only buying quad sets or octo sets for fully populated X79 platforms.
CAS latency is no longer important, in fact, with the finicky nature of the memory controller of the Sandy Bridge-E, it can be advantageous to choose a higher CAS latency for improved compatibility. What can be important - relatively speaking, only in single digit % performance differences - is the rated speed of the memory, 1333 or 1600 or 2133 or even 2400.
Even though the X79 platform only supports - at least officially - up to DDR3-1600, one can use XMP profiles in the BIOS to have the memory run at its rated speed of say 2133. For my new 'Monster' I followed these steps and ended up with a fully populated 8 x 8GB octo set of G.Skill RipjawsZ F3 DDR3-2133 sticks that are running without any problems at 2180 MHz.

  • ?s about RAM, Adobe CS3, which Mac Book Pro should I purchase?

I have not yet purchased my MBP, but am curious about the performance of the Adobe CS3 on a 256 MBP. I am trashing my pc for a Mac and want to get the right one for my classes! Adobe CS3 made my computer completely shut down even when I upgraded the ram! It was horrible! I have seen some of yall have upgraded your MBP's to 3 or 4GB. Is this possible with the 256 MBP or do I need to purchase the 512 in order to be able to upgrade the RAM that high? If yall could help me out with this one, that would be awesome. Obviously, I'd rather spend less money and get the 256 and then order the extra RAM to install. Do you purchase the RAM from Apple and does anyone know how much they cost? I've never owned a MAC and haven't used one in probably 8 years! Thanks for your help!

I cant help you on the CS3 problem, but when I bought my MBP I asked about RAM and I'll pass on the same info to you: -
    1) MBP take a maxiumum of 4GB ram and comes with 2 * 1GB RAM sticks as standard.
    2) DONT BUY YOUR RAM FROM APPLE! I was warned about this, the main reason being the price tag! You can buy the same type of RAM direct from I think it's Crucial and save about £200ish. You'll need two * 2GB sticks.
The best bet is to go into an Apple store and have a look at the models on offer before making your choice.
    I hope this helps.

  • Inquiring about RAM compatibility on first gen 12 inch aluminum powerbook

I've recently acquired a 12 inch first gen powerbook, and the only ram it has is the 128 onboard plus another 128 stick. Quite understandably, this *****... I've been looking for more ram, and I found this cheap:
    HYNIX 1GB (2 X 512MB) PC2700 DDR 333MHz CL2.5 200Pin SODIMM Mac PowerBook G4 (and Similar) MEMORY
    Part Number HYMD654M646B6-J AA PC2700S-25330 512MB DDR 333MHz CL2.5 Contents HYNIX 1GB (2 X 512MB) PC2700 DDR 333MHz CL2.5 200Pin SODIMM LAPTOP MEMORY
I can get this pretty cheap, so I'm hoping it works... Can anyone tell me if this should be compatible? (I'm aware that it's 512 more than I need, I'd hold onto the other stick. Also, I know if it works it'd underclock the RAM because its faster than it can handle... Also, can anyone else point me in the direction of a DIRT CHEAP 512 module that'd work in this computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated... (btw, this is my first apple device ever!!)

The original RAM manufacturers for Apple are: Samsung, Micron, and? Hynix.
The officially stated maximum capacity for your machine is 640MB, the soldered 128MB plus a 512MB upgrade. However, since that time, 1GB modules have been found to work, making it a maximum of (whatever the math is in GB).
Here are detailed specs from EveryMac.com:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbookg4/stats/powerbook_g4_86712.html
You have to use PC2100 RAM though, not PC2700. Check the link provided within that link above, which directs you to Other World Computing, who sells "everything" Mac for your Mac. Other places to check are Crucial.com and Data Memory Systems (who seem to know Mac very well). There are other places too, but those are the recommended within the community.
I've used OWC and DataMem, but not Crucial.
Also, always use "name brand" RAM with these 12-inchers as they can be very finicky about RAM. Use Samsung, Micron (Crucial makes Micron RAM), or Hynix, as you chose.
P.S. I just learned yesterday night that PNY memory has the Hynix logo on it. Not sure if it's always been that way or if it's a recent thing... I recently acquired a 15-inch PowerBook aluminum G4 on eBay last week and was searching for RAM. I went against my own recommendation and went for the PNY memory because it was on sale this week at Best Buy--1GB modules of PC2700 RAM for $54.00 each--and I didn't have the money to buy the "real" RAM... considering I just bought the "new" machine! Cost me $120 for 2GB total and max out my "new" 15-inch G4. As opposed to almost $200+ if I bought Samsung RAM. When I upgraded the RAM on my 12-inch PowerBook, I made sure to get the Samsung RAM. Didn't want to take chances on my then new (open box unit at CompUSA) and under warranty PowerBook and have the memory mess up the system as it can sometimes do... and then void your warranty. Though your 867 MHz is way beyond any warranties.
