About to pull the trigger but need memory help

I am about to order my Mac Pro but before I do I want to know what the fastest memory configuration is that I can get
I'm going to order the 2.66GHz machine with the ATI 4870 and 1TB Hard Drive. I edit HD video in Motion and Final Cut Pro on a daily basis. Is it worth upgrading to the 2.93GHz?

memory: buy in multiples of 3 (three - 3, 6, 12 , etc
worth/: simply if you have a business workflow need where yo are deploying .apps for transcoding (with certain .apps) , rendering (with some .apps) and creative work then the top of the line machine is where you need to go.
What business are you in and does you business need this machine to increase the efficiency and profitability of your business.
THere are other ways to spend you money with APPLE that may meet and exceed your business requirements that don't involve a huge outlay for the top of the line machine .. have you looked that these at all?
dont be concerned wi the tech suff. Sure u can have the top of the line MAC PRO (as I have ordered) and fast is one hing but does it make your workflows more efficient..???
SImply look at it like this: if you need it get it else get what will satisfy your *business workflow*.
My 2.93Ghz 8 x core arrives in 3 days form apple with ATI4870 and 12GB.

  • Thoughts before I pull the trigger and buy this computer build?

    Hi guys,
Before I pull the trigger, I would like some thoughts on this build. I'm going to get a few SSD drives on top of this list, but I am not listing them here, as I'm just trying to show the main components I'm after. Using for Adobe and Blender 3D (movie editing rig, vfx, etc...)

    4) Anything I've missed?
    5) 32gb 2800mhz ram is about the same as 16gb 3200mhz ram, what to pick?
    Thanks!
    Mr D

    1) Is anything overkill? yes, get a single GTX 980 instead of the dual 970's
See my above reply. Let me know if you think i'm still in "overkill", seeing what I've been told on Blender forums are contrary.
    2) Is anything underkill? yes, go with a 6 or 8-core for a Premiere Pro x99 build; if that is too expensive, get a earlier gen x79 6-core with much less $$$ DDR3 memory
The processor is a 6 core, is it not? Did I show you the wrong one? Let me know!
    3) Any incompatible things I've researched? nope, you're good there
    4) Anything I've missed? DVD or Blu-ray burner?
I have a Blu ray drive already.
    5) 32gb 2800mhz ram is about the same as 16gb 3200mhz ram, what to pick? Definitely go with 32GB; this will help lots more than speed
    Sounds good!
    Thanks!

Some question about 9iAs R1.2.2 & R2, need your help:
Since 2000, we has used 9iAS Core (R1.2.2) to publish our website. The platform is Suns Solaris (SPARC). The database is Oracle 8i. But there are so many questions:
    1.     The Web Cache cant be installed well
    2.     The web pages use JSP to query database with SQL show errors when we refresh the page a few times. The error will disappear after restarting the 9iAS or refreshing the page again. On the other hand, the same pages dont show error on resin. The error is java.sql.SQLException : Closed Connection: next. I supposed that the connection of database has some hidden troubles, but I can find it, could you give me some advice.
Now I have installed 9iAS R2, But when I visited the manage page, I found that a password is needed to visit the web cache manage page. I dont think I have set the password, and then I cant control the web cache. I want to know is a default password occurred? If not, what is the password.

The default password for Web Cache is: administrator

The reset link will only show if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.

Dear all, I have a MacBook Pro bought in April 2011. Last April, it got stuck while the wheel was spinning and I had to force it shut. That cost me my hard drive. Now, it's stuck again. I tried esc, cmd+tab, moving the trackpad on the apple, but no. HELP!

    Dear John,
thank you for your prompt reply. After I sent the email, I left the wheel spinning to see if it would eventually stop. It didn't, but after a while the screen turned blue, so I decided to switch everything off with a forced shut-down. I could not restart with the OS DVDs because I am currently away from home, but fortunately everything was more or less fine after restarting. It then got stuck again, I forced it shut again, restarted again, and now it seem to work but I won't overdo it and will switch off smoothly after writing this (unless it gets stuck again). Last April I have replaced the HD, so it's now just under 6 months old. And, of course, since the crash occurred when I was abroad and had backed up just before I left, I have lost only a few days' work. Still, and I know this will make me hugely unpopular here, with my 5 previous laptops running on MS Windows I never had a problem. Which does not mean I loved the OS, or I would not have switched to Mac.
Anyway, and this is the main reason for this message, thank you very much again for your speedy intervention.
    Claudia

  • When I'm installing iTunes, it says I'm missing a program that the installer is attempting to run, but it's not telling me which program it needs. The installer is able to run through about most of the install, but near the end, this error kills it, help?

Well basically like it says in the question, when the installer runs through to what I assume is near 90% completion, an error message pops up saying that the installer is unable to find/run a program it needs, and as helpful as it is, the installer neglects to tell me what program I need to download/install for the iTunes installer to complete, as it is, I am at a total loss for how to resolve the issue, I couldn't find anything about this on FAQ's, but if it's there, please let me know; however, I'm welcoming all advice, thank you.

  • Have Tiger, but lots of old apps... should I pull the trigger?

Yes, I know this is a popular question, but every situation is different and I haven't seen a definitive answer after browsing the forums for a while.
    I have the following hardware:
    800MHz 17" flat-panel iMac
    800MHz iBook
...and the following apps, none of which I can afford to upgrade:
    Final Cut Pro 4
    Premiere 6.5
    Illustrator 10
    Photoshop 7
    DVD Studio Pro 1.5
    Lightwave 7
    Cubase SX
    Logic Express 7
    Flash MX
    Office X
    ProTools FREE (v5 - OS9 only)
...and probably a couple others I've forgotten.
I was given the retail box of 10.4, and the temptation is SO strong to install it. My two Macs were bought at times when I had an unusual amount of cash, so in the future, I think my limited budget means that the only new Macs I'll have will be Intel machines of er, let's just say an un-conventional nature. I also can't afford to upgrade the apps, although I do have Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio Pro 3, although I still plan to use 1.5 most of the time. I may also be able to use Photoshop CS2, but sticking with 7 would be fine.
My biggest problem is with FCP4. I've heard that QT 7 really causes problems, not the least of which is no QT Export to MPEG-2. I of course have Compressor, but get the constant "unable to connect to background process" error, so I rely on QT Export to create .m2v files for DVDs. I guess it's possible that Compressor will magically work in Tiger, but I fear letting go of QT Export. I also dread paying for a new MPEG-2 Playback Component and/or QT Pro license.
I wish I could cross-post this into the FCP and DVDSPro forums, but hopefully enough people here will be able to tell me whether I'm better off not upgrading unless I can get new versions of the apps.
My application for the iMac is audio/video production, and even though it's done well up to now on the stock 256MB, I'll be upgrading the ram soon to the max of 768MB (that's the max without opening up the case, which I'm hesitant to do). I also would like to use the iBook for some field work, and given its 30GB hard drive, I don't see partitioning as an option. On the up side, the iBook does have the absolute maximum of 1.125GB of RAM.
I would of course use an external drive for content on both machines, but at least with the iMac there's an 80GB hard drive that can be partitioned and still have ample room. I currently have most of it assigned to Jaguar, and a 10GB partition for Panther. If I went that route again, the Panther partition would have to be larger than 10GB because most of the apps would be installed under Panther. I guess another issue is whether Tiger and Panther partitions would play nice. Right now I can launch applications that reside in the Panther partition even if I booted into Jaguar and vice-versa, but I wonder if that would confuse Tiger.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice.

I apologize for the tone of my previous post, but it's so frustrating to post a question and have so many people "miss the barn" in their answers. Funnily enough, you actually have a very similar collection of machines to me... I have the 17" FP iMac, the iBook G4, and also a B&W G3 in the bedroom that my fiancee and I use for web surfing. I tried posting in the FCP and DVDSPro forums since those are the most important apps to run, but not much response.
What I ended up doing was creating two equal partitions on the iMac (~37GB each), one for Jaguar and one for Tiger. I actually like working in Jaguar for daily computing tasks, so I'll be installing my older apps there. My recording interface won't work under Jaguar, so my audio apps and all newer software (Soundtrack Pro, Adobe CS2, etc.) will be installed on the Tiger partition. I have no love for Panther, so I've stopped using it completely.
I'm sure switching between the partitions will be somewhat of a pain, but the option-key startup menu should make it easier. As I mentioned earlier, when I got Panther I only made a partition for it rather than upgrading, even though my apps would still run. I just didn't like the metallic look. Apple had started adding brushed aluminum in their hardware, but the Aqua interface seemed to go better with the older "iLamp". It's funny though, I really like the look of Tiger on it, maybe in part because they went back to a blue Apple Menu logo. It also seems quite snappy, although the first few boots on my iBook were painfully slow.
I haven't bothered to upgrade the OS on the B&W... can you really get it up to Tiger? It does have built-in Firewire, but I thought the minimum clock speed was something like 700MHz. It doesn't have tons of RAM either, so I'm probably better off not trying to upgrade. It seems to have a Rev. A motherboard, so it crashes once in a while, not very often though. Also, the Firewire is either disabled or fried, because I've tried an iBot webcam and it couldn't even see it. I'd hazard a guess that the reason the B&W might seem snappier is because the OS knows it's on an older machine and turns off a lot of CPU-draining eye candy that you may not notice (font smoothing, shadow effects, etc.) so it looks about the same but runs faster. Whenever I'd run OS 9 on my iMac it seemed like a screaming little machine compared to the previous Macs I had, but not so much with OS X.
Well, thanks for trying. I kind of figured this out myself, but I would have thought that someone here would have had the same experience as myself and could offer some advice. Seems most of the posts here are about upgrading to Leopard, so I guess I'm a bit behind the curve. For now, it's kind of comforting that I can't (officially) go beyond 10.4.11, since it makes the decision for me. Of course once an app comes along that only runs under Leopard, that sick feeling of being obsolete will probably come back.

  • The chapter about php_db4 in the BDB documentation need to be updated

    Hi all,
I think the chapter about php_db4 in the BerkeleyDB documentation should be updated.
The first sentence "A PHP 4 extension for this release of Berkeley DB..." gave me the concept that the extension can be ONLY run with PHP 4. I've got the idea that DBXML's php extension can run with PHP 5, so the BDB's extension should work with PHP 5 too.(Perhaps I'm not clever enough, but it did give me the wrong thought.)
It's too simple in the documentation to let everyone know how to sovle the problems in compile process(and such subjects are hard to be found through search engines).
I had compiled BDB 4.5 on my Fedora Core 6. When I make the php_db4, it could not finish normally(with some errors). When I added CPPFLAGS=-DHAVE_CXX_STDHEADERS, it solved - this should be written somewhere in the documentation or at lease in the INSTALL file, right?
In the INSTALL file, it says "PHP can itself be forced to link against libpthread either by manually editing its build files (which some distributions do), or by building it with --with-experimental-zts". But at least I can't find this option in the configure of PHP 5.2.1. Only an option '--enable-maintainer-zts' can be found, and it is noted as 'for code maintainers only'(so it should not be enabled by end-users with less experience, isn't it?). PHP 5.2.1's TSRM is ptheads-enabled by default, I don't know whether I should follow the note about pthreads or not.
Anyway, I can use the native API of BerkeleyDB in my php code now. Thanks for the developers! Hope the documentation can be updated with more directives, so the new users of php_db4 can use it more smoothly:-)

Nothing is further from the truth.  Installing updates does not cause hardware issues or hardware to stop working.  Anyone that tells you otherwise is completely ignorant.
I (and millions of others) have installed iOS updates with little or no adverse affects.  The vast majority of issues that arise during an iOS update can be rectified with basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide.
There is no legitimate reason to not update the iOS which adds new features and fixes security issues in iOS.

My other problem is that someone proxied the call to ATT to obtain the unlock so I don't know exactly what happened and if in fact they did agree to unlock or perhaps lied instead or did something else.  But I don't have the account information for ATT since it's a group account so i'm SOL.
Well, there you go.  You need to contact AT&T or get the correct information and go to AT&T's website and request the unlock.
There are no codes, as you've already found out.
Once the unlock has been approved, AT&T will email you to let you know it has been processed and that the next step is to restore the device.

  • Any Words of Advice for G5 iMac 20in iSight Owner B4 I Pull the Trigger?

Got my copy Friday and installed it on my MacBook this morning. No issues whatsoever. The MacBook is my traveling machine, but my iMac G5 (and to a lesser extent, my PowerBook G4) are where I keep everything I hold dear. I have this funny feeling about putting it on the non-Intel machines. I've done a little homework this afternoon, and see that it's probably a good idea to repair permissions and reformat the hard drive. I have plenty of external drives and will, of course, do a complete backup for disaster recovery. Doing a clean install will be a time consuming pain in the ***, but also a good opportunity to clean up years worth of junk that's accumulated on the G5.
My Intel MacBook is running well - nice and fast. I'm a little concerned about speed on the G5 (2gb ram) though, and starting to wonder if maybe I should hold off, and just stick with Tiger? Has anyone installed on the iMac G5 20in iSight and had any problems or speed issues I should consider before upgrading?

    Hello William,
A backup before upgrading is always good.
I have installed on a G5 1.8 MHz without much problems. The keychain gave me some troubles. Renaming. Opening and naming back again solved the problem.
The speed of Leopard is improved so there is no reason to hold off an upgrade for this reason. Things I dislike are the stack which ruined the quick opening of applications. The stack is pretty worthless in my opinion. The other thing I dislike is the grainy font smoothing. It is really much worse compared to Tiger.
There are also things to like however. Speed is one of them.
I did not bother to do a clean install. As a matter of fact I use the same system since 10.1 without clean install and never had any issues. I transfered the system with everything on it from a G4 which I started out with.
Make a backup and start an upgrade install to enjoy Leopard. If you think anything needs "clean" installed you can always do that afterwards.

  • My macbook air won't get past the white apple screen.  I've tried power cycling the batter but won't help

my macbook air won't get past the white apple screen.  I've tried power cycling the batter but won't help

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

Note you cannot restore an IOS newer than the IOS on iPhone, you need to update iPhone first.
