About to purchase my first Mac!

I am looking at purchasing a laptop and I think that a Mac is the way to go. I have been deciding between the Air and the Pro. All I will be using the computer for is surfing the net, e-mail, maybe some netflix once in a while, and simple tasks (no gaming or photos). The other major purpose this computer will serve for me is MUSIC. I am just starting to get into DJing. My music library will have no more than 10,000 songs which is about 40 GB (1 GB = 250 songs).
I think I am going to go with the Air over the Pro but do you think the 128 GB Air will be able to serve my needs? I don't know how much space the operating system takes up and other programs that the computer comes with. As in how much space will be left of the 128 GB....aka will I be able to store 40 GB of music? Or will I need to run off external hard drives and maybe just store 10 GB of music on my computer at a time and change songs periodically using the hard drive.
Also I am probably going to get an adapter so that I am able to install DJ software onto the computer using a CD-ROM. I don't think that I always need this drive so that is another reason I am ok with the Air over the Pro since I can just use this adapter the few times that I will need it.
Thanks everyone for your help. I am completely new to apple but have had the iPhone 4s for about 3 months and now I want the laptop!

Hello,
Is there any bonus to getting off my butt and buying
the MBP17 from the store?
Yes, there are benefits to buying from the local store. And, good move going for the better 17-inch rather than the 15-inch with known problems.
I'll answer your questions below:
Will buying from the store increase my chances of
getting a "perfect machine?"
No
Will buying from the store make returns/exchanges
easier in the likely case I get a machine with one of
the annoyances?
Yes.
Returns are basically the same regardless of whether you buy online or from the retail store. But, you don't have to pay return shipping and risk them claiming they didn't receive it if you take it back to the store.
Unfortunately, you can only return it to the retail store if you purchased it there.
So, I would expect refunds / exchanges, etc. to be much faster dealing with a retail store.
Dealing with Apple directly, they are not going to refund you until they receive it back. Then, you have to be sure that you can prove when they receive it.
Can I get the education discount as a highschool
student at the store?
I asked my local store about discounts such as these (my wife has a corporate discount with Apple). I was told that they would not honor discounts because they would be selling the machine for less than they pay for it.
So, to get the discounts, you will have to buy from the online store (at least that is what they told me).
Typically, the discount is around $100 to $300 depending on the machine. The restocking fee is usually 10%. So, the difference may work out to about the same.

There are no known viruses for OS X.  If you have to worry about a website putting some malware on your computer, then you should not visit it any longer.  Find a legitimate site.

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

I recently purchase my first Mac Book Pro. I copied all my Word documents from my old PC to a USB flash drive with the intention of downloading the content into my new computer. I installed Word for Mac previously. I can not figure out how to download the content of the flash drive into the Mac. Probably very simple but obviously I am a new user. Any suggestions?

Drag them from the drive to the Documents item in the Finder's sidebar.

  • About to buy my first Mac Pro

I would like to upgrade from a 24" Intel iMac to a new 8-core Mac Pro. This is my first Mac Pro so would appreciate a little advice. I'm an amateur videographer and this is a major investment for a computer for my personal use. The new Mac Pro will be used mainly for FCP 2.0. My plan is to get the 8-core, 2.8 GHz processors with 4GB of memory, a 1TB drive, a single ATI HD 2600 graphics adapter, and 2 monitors (one I already have). This pushes to price to close to $5K. I considered the faster processors and more memory, but this seems to a reasonable compromise of cost vs. performance. Agree?
The next question that comes to mind is how long will it take to move everything over from the iMac. As I understand it, Apple has a transfer utility that eliminates the need to re-install everything. Hopefully this includes FCP. I have about 500GB of applications and data that will have to be moved. Does the transfer utility delete the app from the source computer once it is installed on the target computer? Hopefully it doesn't so I'll be able to still use the iMac until the Mac Pro is fully configured and stable. Even though I don't make any money with this, I have several commitments and I can't afford to be shut down for long.
Lastly, I have a lot of trouble with firewire devices on the iMac. I have several firewire HDD's, a control surface for FCP, various capture devices, etc. with a mix of both FW400 and FW800. On the iMac, I've had nothing but trouble, especially when both FW800 and FW400 devices are used simultaneously. Anyone had problems like those I described with their Mac Pro? Can I add a firewire card to the Mac Pro to increase the number of FW inputs... perhaps run all FW800 devices on the card and all FW400 devices on existing FW inputs.

I had a small engineering / product development company that started out with a handmade 8080 computer and Dr. DOS. From there it was Win 3.1 and a 286 computer and so on. I was locked into the WinTel environment since I used several specialized programs and hardware cards that were only available with that platform. I promised myself that, when I closed the company and retired, I'd buy a Mac... and I did. I've purchased a pair of iMac's, a MacMini and a MacBook and am now shopping for my first Mac Pro. I've never regretted that decision and am sure I'll be among the Mac faithful for the duration.
My results have been somewhat different that yours. Yes, the Mac is more expensive than a comparable Windows machine, but now, with the Intel Macs capable of running both Mac and Windows software, its like getting two computers for not much more than a Windows only computer and you gain the ability to run both Windows only and Mac only applications. As far as reliability goes... I used mainly Enterprise versions of IBM and Dell computers in my company and they were far less reliable than my current Mac gear. I'd like to add AppleCare to the list of benefits, but since they started shipping the calls overseas, it hasn't been much better than what I was getting from Dell.

  • Im about to buy my first mac. i need help tho!!

i am ready to buy my first macbook pro. Should i go ahead and buy one now before lion is out? or wait untill lion is out? please help!!
    thanks- Cameron

I would recommend you to get it when lion osx comes out. Anyway, it is just round the corner And based on eww's statement, Lion osx will be free for you, while others have to upgrade with $29.99.
But if you are in a rush to get a mac, then you can just get it now. Anyway, lion osx is only $29.99, which is an excellent price for the new software

If you get the non-Retina MacBook Pro, later on you can upgrade to a large SSD once the prices have come down a lot more.
The Retina MBP's you cannot later upgrade.
That was true when the rMBPs were initially introduced. It is no longer the case though and one can most certainly upgrade the SSD in a rMBP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Retina_2012
Of course, unlike the normal MBPs, this is not a user replacement part as defined by Apple and higher capacity SSDs are expensive when compared to normal hard disks or hybrid hard disks, but it most certainly can be done.

  • About to buy my first Mac, but I wanted some advice.

Well, that's not entirely true. I'm a very pleased iPhone customer and I love my iPad, but I've always stuck to Windows for my powerhouse computing.
Sadly, my laptop took a dirt nap this week, and I'd really like to make the switch to a Mac laptop now. The question is, what?
I have very little experience with Mac laptops, but if picking one is similar to picking a windows machine, then I should probably tell you what I'm planning to use it for, and then (if I'm lucky) someone might be able to point me in the right direction. Day by day, I'm becoming more of an audiophile so I feel the Mac switch is a natural progression. I work for a production company (very, very new to the job), so I would want a laptop that has storage and power to run live applications for such an environment (if anyone knows of any, I would greatly appreciate that input as well). Along with that, battery life is crucial and I will need 5 hours minimum. I think my iPad has spoiled me.
Other than that, the switch looks painless. The question is, what to buy? I'm planning on financing, so money isn't particularly an issue. Other than that, I would really appreciate any advice you would have for me.
Thanks in advance for any advice. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum.
I look forward to joining the "real" Mac experience soon!
    Matthew

The problem with this idea is that the batteries in current MBPs are not considered by Apple to be user-replaceable, and removing them voids the warranty. There are external batteries on the market, but they're quite expensive:

Well, Apple REALLY dropped the ball on this one by omitting user replacement of battery and thereby reducing the user friendliness of current MBPs.
I guess Apple engineers just didn't have the expertise to come up with an easily replaceable battery, hmmm? If not that then what was their rationale for rendering current MBPs batteries non user replaceable?

  • About to purchase new Mac Pro - Need Advice

I am about to purchase a new mac pro and have some questions
I am planning to use final cut pro as well as Edius on Boot Camp.
I intend to edit footage in HDV from a sony Z1 and also from the new sony - pmw -ex3 which i will be planning to edit in HD and 24p.
    1) the default config for the mac pro is dual 2.8.ghz processors, what advantage gain will i get i upgrade to 3.0 or 3.2, is the extra power worth the money? will this give me more real-time editing
How many layers of HD 1920 x 1080 from the sony pmw-ex3, will i be able to edit in FCP 6.0 without any problems? would you advise more ram
    2) i prefer to work from RAID 5 drives and keep system drive separate, this is how i have worked on in PC/Windows environment. Can anyone confirm if i can have one JBOD drive for the system and 3 drives configured as a RAID 5 drive?
Will i be able to use a boot to run windows and also be able to use the RAID 5 drive on windows side?
    3) Is anyone using the 3ware RAID 5 side car? what is experienece is this compatible on the windows partition from boot camp
    4) How will i be able to preview HD footage?
    5) Do i need to invest in a better Graphics
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Here are a few answers.
    1. The Mac Pro 2.8 GHz model performs so well that it is difficult to justify paying 28% more for 7% of additional processor power in the case of the Mac Pro 3.0 GHz or 56% more for 14% additional processor power with the Mac Pro 3.2 GHz model. You might see a small 5-10% increase in performance when compressing video with the 3.2GHz model but it certainly would not be worth paying 50% more to me. In addition, Amazon has the 2.8 on sale for $2599 after an easy rebate:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000VR4F2Q/arizomacinusergr
That is a $200 savings off the retail price.
    2. If you want to use boot camp I would NOT recommend the Apple RAID card. Boot camp does not work with this card which leaves you wondering why you bought the card and how to get around this HUGE limitation. Instead, I would recommend the Areca ARC-1221x, HighPoint RR 3522 or the ARC-1680x if you want a SAS card. All of these cards have new firmware available that provide awesome performance and boot capability with the Mac Pro 2008. I would also get a SeriTek/2eEN4 4-bay and 1TB Samsung HDs. This gives a solid, quiet 4-bay enclosure that can support RAID 5 with any of the cards and you can add a second enclosure later if you want to use all eight external ports with RAID 6 (for added redundancy and increased volume size). This leaves the internal bays available for Boot Camp, Mac OS X, backups or mirrors and provides RAID 5/6 capability that can be configured to perform almost twice as fast as the Apple RAID card and provide double the redundancy with RAID 6. 3. The 3Ware RAID 5 card is not a top pick in the Macintosh market. The options outlined above will provide much better performance and RAID 6 capabilities.
    4. You can view the the HD footage on the monitor.
    5. You may want a better graphics card but I would try the stock card first. I was surprised how well the ATI radeon HD 2600 XT card performs with Apple applications.
    Have fun!

  • Just purchased a new IPAD 2 Retina, first MAC computer and have an old IPOD Touch.  Trying to sync all the accounts (2 different accounts) to one account.

I have 2 accounts in Itunes.  My old one and new one.  I just purchased my first MAC book pro and my 2nd Ipad (Retina).  I have an old IPOD Touch and have different stuff on each device.  I am trying to sync without having to ERASE and REPLACE to sync.  Any ideas?

If you were syncing your iPod touch to the old computer, use Migration Assistant to get all your user data to the new computer.
Then it will sync fine (since you will be using the same library).

I'm about to purchase a new mac and I don't have my original Logic disks. I've got the studio upgrade disks and obviously the serial from original logic.
    I'll have to migrate.
From peoples experience, will I have any problems migrating Logic from my Macbook Pro Snow Leopard to Imac Lion?
    Thanks.

I upgraded from Logic Pro to Logic Studio.
So, yes the upgrade pack does have the disks needed.
Sometimes I'm a little slow, and need to sort of say things out loud...

I'm also going to upgrade the ram on the machine that I get so what one is the easiest to do the upgrade also can you upgrade the graphics/video card on them?
No video upgrades on the iMac, RAM upgrades are easy on both, but Mac compatible RAM is essential.
