About to purchase my very first MAC computer, got a few quick ?'s...

ok I think I'm about to buy the 24" iMac... Except I have never even seen a MAC computer in my life! I have only experienced windows computers...
Anything important I need to know before my purchase?
Also is there a new designed iMac coming out soon? I saw new laptops and other things released on apple store.com
And finally this may be re dumbest question ever but where is the CD/DVD drive located? Is evrything included into the flat screen? I mean there is no tower or anything....
Please help before I screw up and drop $2000 on something I am clueless about... There is no apple store within hundreds of miles, so you are my only source....
Thanks!

Hello iturn,
I presume you've looked at Apple's website to get the info you have on the 24" iMac, but if not, here it is.
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/imac?mco=MTE3MDM
Click on the tabs in the included software section to see what comes with it.
All the hardware you should need is included . . . and yes the CD-DVD reader-burner super drive is located on the right side of the screen. There is no tower or anything else other than the keyboard and mouse. In that respect it's a lot like a desktop mounted laptop only much bigger.
You're choice of the 24" model is, IMHO the best choice of the available models. The screen is brilliant and is a beauty. Also, somewhere on that Apple site is a section to help people who are switching from windows, so you should look for it and check it over. And on Amazon you can find a book by David Pogue called Switching: the Missing Manual or something like that.
Yes, before you drop $2000 on a totally new computer system you definitely should research it out to see that it fits your needs. And you really ought to see one of these Macs in person and play around with it a little. It's likely to blow your mind a bit, but that's the way to see if it's the computer for you. Surely there's someone in your area that has one. If not a weekend drive to the nearest Apple store is surely worthwhile for you.
As for a possible new design coming out soon, no one here knows that, nor are we allowed to speculate here about it. Again my best advice is to find a way to get a look at one before you order it.
Hope this helps and I hope you'll join us soon with one of these gorgeous machines.
Rick

  • Looking to buy my first Mac computer product. . .

Hey there Mac support users! I'm looking to buy my first Mac computer product, and I am currently caught indecisive between the 13in and the 15 inch Macbook Pro. I have been over the technical specifications of both, and I do not really want to push out the 1700$ it would cost to buy the 15 inch if getting the 13 would be just as effective for my purposes. And of course, here is some background info on me:
I am currently a college student (hooray education pricing), and am also a musician who plays guitar, bass, some keys, and does vocals.
I will be using the Macbook for some light gaming (Diablo III with friends, maybe some other stuff later), but I am specifically wondering about which version to buy as concerns Pro Tools and audio recording -- something I plan on getting into after purchasing the Macbook.
I am aware that the 15 inch has a more powerful processor able to handle more things at once, which may come in handy while utilizing Pro Tools. In addition, I have noticed that the 15 inch Macbook version comes with two built in 3.5mm jacks on the side -- one for audio in, and the other for audio out (as compared to the standard headphone jack of the 13inch model). I am curious to know whether having the two separate jacks would be ultimately beneficial for music recording, or would it simply be better/cheaper to buy the 13 inch and get an adapter for the headphone jack?
I guess, in sum, I am just looking for some pointers in the best direction -- which would be best for a musician using Pro Tools: cheaper normal/super version of the 13 inch? Or the more expensive yet powerful 15inch model?
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Thanks!

Hi Ziatheral, and welcome to the forums!
You've asked a lot of really good questions, and I'll do my best to be helpful.
For starters, you'll need to know that Pro Tools requires a 7200 RPM hard drive. Your standard off the shelf Mac ships with a 5200 RPM drive, so you will need to custom order a machine to meet specs.
Pro Tools is not yet officially qualified to run on Mountain Lion, although some users report it runs ok for them. It will take Avid a while to release an up-to-date version of Pro Tools.
You can NEVER have too much screen real estate. I've run Pro Tools on a 27" monitor, and even the 15" screen seems tiny by comparison. You get better graphics on the 15" monitor, too.
When recording, most artists use some kind of breakout box for mic preamping and monitoring. It's cool to think that the built in inputs and outputs will work, and in some cases they will, but that method is far from how pro recording is done. Many people like the Apogee Duet 2 for this:
    http://apogeedigital.com/products/duet2.php
Personally, I'm kind of cheap, and if you're not going to be using MIDI, I like the Mackie Blackjack. I can at least afford one of those more easily:

You have some time. It'll probably be a month or two before Pro Tools is ready to run on Mountain Lion. Keep looking. Do your homework. Don't just take somebody's word for it (including mine). And write if you have any more questions. The community is here for you.

I bought a new Apple I bought a Mac Pro Retina screen, since I got it keeps crashing ALL the time!!!  This is my first Mac computer and I am hating it!!!  I assume I can take down to the any store and they will replace it??

I have a similar problem, my MBP Retina 15" 6 weeks old crashes and locks-up all the time with just about every application.  I now have gone back to using my old MS XP system, it is much more stable than Mountain Lion OS and Apple hardware.  I use Window-7 at work for last 6 months, not a single crash and/or lock-up.  I'm looking at returning/selling my MBP and getting a Window-8 system, Apple is now building crap hardware and software.  I recommend you consider the same solution.  Good Luck !

hi. I just bought my very first mac. I cant get to see youtube videos using safari. it says to upgrade my flashplayer. do I have to download the flashplayer?

It's no longer pre-installed for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is Adobe Flash requires such frequent security updates that any version installed at the factory is pretty much garunteed to be dangerously out of date by the time you get the machine in your hands.
Just go to adobe.com and download the latest version of flash player.

You can try calling Apple support at 0800-761-0880 and explaining the situation to them. Perhaps there will be something they can do to help. Try asking to speak with a Customer Relations representative, though I don't know if they have them in Brazil.

I have 2 accounts in Itunes.  My old one and new one.  I just purchased my first MAC book pro and my 2nd Ipad (Retina).  I have an old IPOD Touch and have different stuff on each device.  I am trying to sync without having to ERASE and REPLACE to sync.  Any ideas?

If you were syncing your iPod touch to the old computer, use Migration Assistant to get all your user data to the new computer.
Then it will sync fine (since you will be using the same library).

  • Noob here, first mac computer have a question.

I just bought a brand new imac computer, the 21.5 screen base version. I'm not the most tech savy guy in the world. For the sake of being in the right place, is my imac the intel based version, g5, g4 or g3?

    Hi cmhaah06
See the iMac time line at Wikipedia > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac
    and iMac History > http://www.imachistory.com/2002/
The last G5 PPC iMac was built in Late 2005 and everything after that is considered an Intel iMac.

  • My mac computer got slow.

    Hi there,
friends have a problem with my mac, it happened when you download the "MacTubes" install, I set down my video, but either surprise that this does not begin downloading until there all goes well, and I started to find out why the video did not go down if you already had the program when a forum I found someone with the same problem and recommended installing Adove FLASH PLAYER 14, a not download version OS X 10.9, run me MacTubes because download the video, but there began to be slow on my mac trackpad functions using the expose - pass the pagination mission control throughout. I think it was more for the adobe flash mactube program, but now I know how to fix my mac. and delete both. but this has changed.
if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

  • Switching from windows xp to i mac maybe got a few questions?

I am considering purchasing an i mac. I do a little gaming which i already know the games i play are supported by mac. My question is i know purchasing an i mac everything is self contained in the monitor. What happens when new games/expansions come out for the games i play? Such as if they require like direct x 8 or 9 say the new game needs direct x 10 is that even a concern or will video be all screwy. I am not a major gamer. I do play a few though my passion lies in the photo an movie an audio part of the i mac. I am just not completely convinced if i should purchase an i mac. I am looking at the new pentium based i mac as well not sure if that will mean anything. I jus don't want to invest almost 2k into a system that i will be disappointed in a year with. I am not made of money so I want to make the right decision. I won't have this kinda money again. Thank You all in advance for your replys if anyone can answer these questions. Help me with whats the best way to go because i am sick of windows an all the problems that come with windows systems.
    David

Personally, I faced the same situation as you. I'd rather use my home computer for photos, movies, and audio tinkering... points where Macintoshes just do wonders out of the box. Other than that general program use (word processing, web browsing, etc.) of course functions equally well. Beyond that, sure, I'd like it to play some games.
The only game I regularly play right now is World of Warcraft. Knowing this runs on a Mac and the specifications of the new iMac's... I went ahead and bought one. Since getting my iMac, World of Warcraft plays very well under Rosetta. With the Universal binary expected soon, the performance should increase drastically.
I had a similar concern with regard to game performance on a Mac. Previously, if you wanted a high end graphics card, you had to invest in a PowerMac (tower case). Although the graphics cards built into the laptops, iMacs, and mini functioned... they were typically lower models that may not perform up to snuff. Throw in the fact that bus interface suffered when compared to similarly configured Windows systems and games perform, just not as great.
Apple (maybe because of Intel's hardware configurations) got it right with the new iMac... fast graphics card with good memory configurations (128 or 256 megabytes) coupled with fast bus interface speeds.
With regard to Macs and quantity of games, I haven't used a Macintosh since OS 8. Games came out for the Mac back then, but not in abundance. After I purchased my iMac I visited an Apple store to get a cable to hook up an external monitor. While there I perused the games section and was genuinely surprised. There are more titles out than I thought.
As far as DirectX goes ... Macs use OpenGL for rendering most 3D games. You may have seen OpenGL as an alternative option to DirectX in some Windows games. It's just the way Macs do things ... different.

  • First week with FCE, a few quick questions...

Okay, I am going to try to keep this short, but I have a couple questions about FCE.
    1. When I am capturing video/audio from my camera, I am using my MBPs internal hard drive, so I want to keep as much free space as I can on here. Once I'm doe with the video, and its finalized, is there a way I can just keep the rendered/compressed version on my MBP, and maybe move the project folder to my external in case I want to make changes later down the road?
1b. This may be a stupid question, but what files can be deleted if I want to erase a video i was making but no longer want (i have 2 test videos when I was learning how to use FCE) and want them gone.
    2. Each and every time I make a change in the time line (like adding clips, transitions, effects, music, etc.) do I have to render it (because it keeps saying unrendered)
2b. Music I import in from my iTunes library wont play, i just get a beeping, do I have to render it?
    3. If I capture a clip from my camera, and I have it in a bin in my project window, and I just want to use half of that clip and delete the rest (so it doesn't take up space) how do I go about doing so? Just set the in and out point, drag it over to my timeline, and delete the clip from the bin?
3b. My final question, if and when I delete a clip from my bin, does it permanently delete or is there another way I have to go in and delete clips.
As you can probibaly see, my main concerin is saving space and deleting clips and "thing" i dont want anymore or i am not going to use.
Thanks for your help in advance!!

    2. FCE pro "accepts" many video formats, but it has trouble playing them in real time. Most video formats are highly compressed and not good for editing. For example, if you have a master frame every 24 frames, that means a cut into the middle of that such a run of frames requires FCE to render the master frame and 11 frames following to get the 12th frame of the compression sequence. FCE simply can't do this in real time. You can get around this two ways:
    a) In the upper left corner of the sequence window, you click on the RT menu and select "Unlimited RT". This works sort-of. You will see skipped frames and other anomalies during playback that will not be in the final result rendered movie. This usually doesn't help for audio rendering problems though.
    b) Convert your incoming video to a quicktime DV/DVCPRO file using a resolution that matches your incoming video resolution. DV/DVCPRO compresses only within a frame, rather than across multiple frame, so each frame stands on its own and is easily rendered in real time, no matter how you edit it.
2a. Again, the audio rendering issue. You will see a red bar at the top of the timeline with the iTunes music. I assume the audio clip is from a ripped CD, not the iTunes store, as iTunes store audio files are locked and can't be used. FCE wants an easily processed audio format. See page 211 of the FCE user manual. AIFF is a good choice. To convert the iTunes audio to this format, control-click on the iTune track and select "Show in Finder" from the popup menu. Drag the revealed file onto Quicktime player and then export to AIFF format.
When working with an FCE project, it is usually a good idea to make a folder to contain both the FCE file and the related media files converted from whatever their source format was. When you are done, you can back up the originals, and the FCE project file. If you ever need to rework the FCE video, you can reload the originals and reconvert them, rather than backup the large DV/DVCPRO and AIFF data files.
