About to replace hard drive for the first time

Hello,
I am about to help my grandson replace a hard drive (and upgrade the RAM) on an iBook G4 800mHz
laptop. The current HD is certified dead by our Apple Genius Bar genius, and with any luck, that's all. (I am able to boot the machine from an external drive OK)
He has purchased a Fujitsu 120GB HD from OWC (likewise a 1GB RAM chip) after careful research into compatibility with this particular iBook model. We have been studying the IFixit and powerbookmedic manuals and are thoroughly intimidated by fears of ripping connectors from logic boards (well, I'M intimidated at least!). Bought the right and proper tools, torx and philips drivers and spudgers and all. Right.
My question is this: the HD arrived with a tiny blue part taped to the package....looked like it may be a jumper (I remember this from when friend helped me replace my G4 power pc HD). Does this drive require the placement of a jumper? Also, is it always necessary to format the HD before installation of the OS? Is it really as simple as taking the old drive out and putting the new one in exactly the same way? The instructions look very straightforward, tedious, but straight forward?
Any wisdom before we start to pry open those fragile bits? thanks a bunch!
Dave

David,
As Adrian says use the same tape. Actually the service manual say the same thing, i.e. to remove it carefully so it can be reused.
It's called Kapton tape ( from 3M of course but apparently developed by DuPont ) and I've been interested in it for a long time since it works so well. So I Googled it ( Google is your friend ) and came up with tons of sources. This one was very informative:
http://www.technicaldevices.com/Details.cfm?ProdID=361516
"PRESSURE SENSITIVE SILICONE ADHESIVE SYSTEM ; TRANSPARENT AMBER COLOR ; USED FOR FLAME RESISTANT ELECTRICAL INSULATION, WIRE AND CABLE WRAP, WIRE BUNDLING TERMINATION, SPLICING OF HI-TEMP REFLECTIVE THERMAL INSULATING FILM ; EXCELLENT SOLDER MASK FOR CIRCUIT BOARDS ; RELEASE SURFACE FOR HEATED PLATENS IN HEAT SEALING / LAMINATION ; RESISTS HIGH HEAT OF MOLTEN SOLDER TEMPERATURES OF 100ºF - 500ºF"
Oooh now that IS some nice tape. Might have to get some of that and there are a lot of places where it's real cheap. I had assumed it was real expensive and according to Electronic Goldmine it was:
"Most distributors sell this roll for $50 to $60." They're selling theirs for $24 but that other place $1.00 for what looks like the same stuff. Wait check that, if I'm reading that right it's 6" for $1 and the other place has 36' but it's only 1/8" wide.
Crap.
Richard

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • 2009 MBP can't see internal hard drive - for the second time!

Well, my 2009 13" MBP is at Applecare for the second time because it cannot recognize _any_ internal hard drive.
The first repair came at 9 months (purchased new), now 16 months later I have the same issue.
Swap in a known good drive, it can't see it, boot from DVD, and run Disk Utility, it can't see it either (optical drive shows up fine)
My first repair only said they replaced the original hard drive, has anyone else had the issue of losing access to your internal hard drive?
Ugh, I will be out of the 3 year Applecare next summer, and don't want to get stuck with another iBook G3, if you know what I mean.
    Thanks for any feedback!

    Hi
I have the same issue, I have a Vodafone branded Huawei HG556a with an external drive connected. I have found that it isn't possible to connect via Finder and that SMB doesn't work either. The only way I could connect to it was via FTP using Cyberduck (or Filezilla), but no use as I can't add my media files from the drive to iTunes, so unfortunately disappointing. I'm still looking, but here's the document I was referred too from another forum.
    broadband.vodafone.ie/download/files/storage_mac.pdf
Although not an answer to your question, hopefully this will give you an idea why you are getting the password and username errors when you know they are correct. In the end when I entered the FTP details into Cyberduck I was able to connect.
I know this doesn't help solve the problem (as I'm still looking too), but at leas you know why (ish).
    Cheers

i hope u got it this time
In that screen, which you accessed from the F9 key, you can choose a one time boot from any of the hard disks listed that are bootable.
If you want to choose the default boot drive you will have to do it from the boot options screen in the BIOS. You can access the BIOS by selecting the F10 key.
If the OCZ Vertex2 drive in the list is has enough capacity, it should be the boot disk for multiple operating systems. Legacy SATA spinner hard drives are  ridiculously slow in comparison.
Don't expect an HP to be setup like a Dell notebook or desktop.  There will be basic similarities, but that is where the difference stops. HP BIOS ROM files are customized by HP.
Are you aware they are two seperate  and competing companies?  HP is the largest PC and notebook manufacturer in the world?

    Hey idw3,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities, and thanks for the question. Follow the instructions on this article to move your iTunes Media folder to an external hard drive:

  • I want to create for the first time ever an iPhoto library on my Mac Mini from all of my seperate external hard drives over the years. Instead of filling my Mac Mini hard drive space with all of the pics can I import it to a seperate Apple hard drive.

I want to creat for the first time on my Mac Mini an iPhoto library. I have many seperate hard drives with pics I want to import but are concerned I will fill the hard drive with pics alone. Can I install the pics on one larg (1TB) external apple hard drive and use iPhoto functions still with the pics being installed on a seperate drive from the iPhoto OS?

This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Once that is done you can import directly into the iPhoto library on the external HD.

  • Hard drive on my mac died, installed new hard drive.  When I try to sync my phone for the first time, will the computer wipe all the songs, photos, ibooks from my phone?

hard drive on my mac died, installed new hard drive.  When I try to sync my phone for the first time, will the computer wipe all the songs, photos, ibooks from my phone?

Yes because that information is not located on the hard-drive of your new mac! If it is purchased content from the store, than this issue isn't as bad as it looks!
Here is a link explaining how to get your previously purchased content back:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
You also want to authorize your Apple ID account on the computer by following these instructions as well:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1730
Basically this link explains to go to the top left corner of your screen where you will see file, edit, view etc! Click on Store in that section and click on authorize this computer, also you want to make sure that the computer will not automatically sync by going to iTunes in the top left corner, just to the right of the apple symbol if iTunes is selected, and go to prefrences, and here you will see back up! Right under the back-ups has an option explaining to prevent devices from automatically syncing which is good cause you may be able to transfer your purchases from there which will put your content into the computer, and if that happens than we don't lose anything
Hopefully I was of some help:)

  • I'm modifying someone else's website for the first time (noob = yes).  I only have ftp access to the site server.  Before uploading changes, is there a easy/quick/recommended/etc way to make a copy of the files I'm about to replace?

Great, first post, sorry for the title.  But to repeat it:
I'm modifying someone else's website for the first time (noob = yes).  I only have ftp access to the site server.  Before uploading changes, is there a easy/quick/recommended/etc way to make a copy of the files I'm about to replace?

You can use the Dreamweaver FTP (or a different FTP client) to completely copy the original website to your development computer, then, before making changes, you can copy the whole thing to a directory called something like "website original"
If you want to run both the old and new sites on the remote server, this is often possible. Add a folder/directory to the server and call it something like "new" and upload the new files there until you are ready to replace the old site
All of this you can do with FTP

  • Time Machine: Repeated errors when backing up for the first time using a new external firewire drive

My Iomega 500GB firewire external drive failed on me last week and I have just replaced it with an identical model. I used to use the old drive with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 with no issues, until the drive had a hardware failure and stopped spinning up, hence the replacement.
Two days ago I tried using Time Machine for the first time with the replacement external drive. The backup failed and each subsequent backup attempt has failed since then with a different error each time. The drive cannot be ejected using Finder (Finder says disk is in use and cannot be ejected even when no processes are running except for Finder and Time Machine has been disabled), by dragging it to the dock (hangs computer which can only be fixed by a hard reboot), in Disk Utilities (drive cannot be unmounted) or in Terminal ("no such file or directory").
The first backup attempt failed after 3 hours of "preparing" with the message "The backup was not performed because an error occured while creating backup directory".
I tried repairing the disk in Disk Utilities and Disk Utilities said the drive was OK ("the volume Time Machine Backups appears to be OK"). I tried ejecting the drive (hard reboot of computer and disconnecting the drive), plugging it back in again and trying again.
This time it started backing up, then failed after a few minutes with the message "an error occured while copying files to the backup volume". I had a look at the troubleshooting suggested on http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/C3.html and followed instructions. It failed again, so I did a full reset as per http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/A4.html.
It failed again, so I tried reparing the drive again in Disk Utilities and again it said it was OK. I tried using different cables and ports (Firewire 400 instead of Firewire 800), and backups still fail.
I have turned off anti-virus scanning (Sophos). I have tried excluding it from Spotlight but this causes an error message from Spotlight. I have tried trashing the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and rebooting. I have tried selecting deselecting the drive as the back up in Time Machine preferences, selecting "None", then "Stop Backing Up" then quitting preferences, rebooting, disconnecting the drive, reconnecting the drive and selecting the drive again as the backup disk in Time Machine preferences. I have tried erasing the drive completely, rebooting, and trying to back up again.
None of these have worked. This is a brand new drive and I do not want to have to replace it again if I do not have to.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

    Hello, some possible clues...
Should you click “Start New Backup”? Not yet! If you see the dialog above, your existing Time Machine backup is corrupt, and you might not be able to recover data from it. But you can save a copy of the corrupt bundle and, perhaps, extract some data from it if needed.
Ask yourself if Time Machine has saved data you might need before deciding what to do next:
If you are sure you won’t need anything backed up before today, click “Start New Backup” and let Time Machine do its thing.
Otherwise, click “Back Up Later” and save a copy before letting Time Machine start a new backup. Just look for a file called “computername.sparsebundle” (for network backups) or “Backups.backupdb” (for local ones) and create a copy with a different name. You can open sparsebundle files with DiskImageMounter and browse them like any other disk. More information is available here.
There you go. If you click “Start New Backup” when you see this dialog box, Time Machine will erase all of your old backup data and start a new bundle. It won’t be corrupt, but it will be empty.
Note that you can manually initiate a Time Machine backup integrity check by option-clicking the “Time Machine” icon in the menu bar and selecting “Verify Backups.”
    http://blog.fosketts.net/2010/08/11/time-machine-completed-verification-backups- improve-reliability-time-machine-create-backup/
According to This Time Machine resource   “This appears only on Snow Leopard, and started with the Time Capsule Backup Update 1.0 in mid-May of 2010.  It also seems to have been included in the 10.6.3 v1.1 update and 10.6.4.”
So, what can you do about it?  Grin and bear it, it seems, until Apple fixes it.
One thing you can do to make the backup take less time is to connect your machine to your Time Capsule or other backup drive via Ethernet for the duration of the initial backup.

  • Setting up a Time Capsule for the first time and replacing it with an existing Router

    Hey there,
I have got a new TC which I will be setting it up for the first time. I have a very old beetle router. I would be using the TC as a wireless hard drive and also as my WiFi Router. After reading the setup guide, I am confused about which option to choose. Moreover, available references on the internet do not provide any clear-cut solution.
My basic aim is to replace my router with the TC and use its in-built WiFi hardware. Since I have an EPSON printer which is connected to my router wirelessly, I am not willing to change its settings. Please guide me which option to choose regarding the same.
    Thanks in advance

Since you have a modem/router, you must continue to use the Beetel modem/router on your network.
The Time Capsule can connect to the Beetel modem/router using a wired Ethernet cable connection and produce a separate wireless network.  You would NOT want the Beetel router and Time Capsule to both try to produce the same wireless network if they are located close together, since this will likely create interference problems that may prevent devices from connecting to either the Beetel orTime Capsule wireless network.
The exception to having the Beetel modem/router and Time Capsule produce the same wireless network would be if you can locate the Time Capsule at least a room or two away from the Beetel modem/router.  An Ethernet cable can be run up to 300+ feet or about 100 meters with no signal loss, so you should be able to locate the Time Capsule anywhere you want.
Are you able to consider this option?
Another option.....if you cannot locate the Time Capsule in another room......would be to configure the Time Capsule to use the same wireless network name and password as the Beetel network and turn off the wireless on Bettel modem/router.
Important.....there is no guarantee that the printer will be able to connect to the Time Capsule wireless network, so you should expect to start over and set up the printer again.
Yet another option would be to turn off the wireless service on the Time Capsule and use the Beetel wireless to back up your computers to the Time Capsule, which will act as a wired hard drive for the network. If you select this option, the Time Capsule can be located close to the Beetel modem/router.

  • I work for a university and we have a legal apple vendor. Can we re-install macosx for a replacement hard drive for a old macbook?Just one example.

I work for a university and we have a legal apple vendor who we get to buy all our Apple products from. Can we (university) re-install macosx for a replacement hard drive once the hard drive gets replaced? How can we as the university IT department legally re-install macosx on a imac, macbook, macbookair etc. We would like to load customized macosx imaging software onto the mac machines(imac, macbook, etc ). The university has its own IT workshop and we would like our users to get their laptops back in the shortest turnaround time.

We're not "Apple Inc." here, just users like you.
So whatever we say is not an official statement, nor does it in any way, shape, or form represent the official or unofficial policies or opinions of Apple, Inc.
But I'll offer my quick opinion, having worked in information-systems and technology support in a wide variety of environments over many years.
    Question #1. "NO!"
No tech support nor repair facility, even if "Apple-authorized", is automatically empowered to install or upgrade OS X on a replacement hard drive just because it is more convenient or time-efficient. When the repair is complete, the student should be expected to (re)install the operating system themself*!
Nurturing students (and occasionally dragging them, screaming and kicking!) as budding computer-, tablet-, smartphone-users to become digitally self-sufficient is a worthy goal that any institution of higher education must pursue.
Making students totally dependent upon "Mother Support" for every little thing about their personal digital devices is a grave disservice to both the students and the people who provide the support. Support-mothered students do become life-long digital dependents, instead of taking the required time to learn enough about the care and feeding of their digital "pets" to sustain them. Entreprenurial students may choose to become 'experts' and actually help each other with their devices, and even make money doing it. Some students may even be inspired/coerced to pursue a career in tech support!!!
*By all means, if the student requests additional help (re-installing the OS), then the University should charge the student a fair price for the service, provided that the user provides the OS on original or upgrade media, or in the case of the 'digital download' upgrades (for OS X 10.7 and 10.8) provides proof of purchase for the OS upgrade, or the original purchase receipt or other recognized documentation for the purchase of the computer showing the version of OS installed when purchased. Students need to learn about personal responsibility, economics ("What is MY time really worth"?), and proper record-keeping too!
Question #2. Regarding the customized imaging software, provide it on media or a link for students to download and install it. Make it their responsibility!

  • Every sync gets "You are about to synchronize your calendar for the first time" - Help !!!

I am on a MBP with the Tour and was able to successfully sync iCal and Address Book with BB. But everytime I try to sync, I get the " You are about to synchronize our Calendar data for the first time." with the options to "Replace Device Data", "Merge Data" or Cancel. Has anyone seen this and know how to fix? Replacing data makes it impossible to update Mac with changes on BB.
    Please help!

Create a backup of your iCal and your BlackBerry.
Then create a test Calendar event on the BlackBerry, in iCal then test another synchronization once again.
The first time sync prompt usually occurs when it does not detect entries in either the BlackBerry or iCal Calendar.

  • After syncing a replacement iPad for the first time, my apps have a "waiting " on the screen I can access them but not on opening screen

After syncing a replacement iPad for the first time, my apps now have a"waiting" message . I can still access from settings but not on the opening app page

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

To solve some sound problems, just follow these simple steps
    1. Go to Settings
    2. Tap on General
    3. Tap on Reset
    4. Tap on Reset All Settings
You may need to delete the game app and redownload (you won't be charged).
