About Updating & Upgrading My Software?

When I Update or Upgrade The Software on My 24inch iMac Computer is it using up The iMac Computer LifeSpam Quicker? cause when I Have an Update or an Upgrade in The Software Versions I Do The Updates & Upgrades then after that I Rest My iMac Computer cause I don't want it to Drain it's Life Spam out, thats if thats how it works? i'm New to Apple Computers, I only been using them since July of 2009. I Don't know how Apple Works about so I just had to Ask & get info on these things?

Maybe it's better to look at your computer as if it were a car. For example, when you update your iMac's software, it's kind of like changing your car's oil and other fluids, putting air in the tires, replacing the wiper blades and so on. These tasks increase an automobile's lifespan and usefulness, and after they're done, you can go out and drive it immediately with confidence that your car will be running better than it was before. A computer is more or less the same: updating the software increases efficiency by fixing bugs and improving security.
It's certainly true that computer components can fail over time, either through extended use or because of factory defects; but software doesn't generally cause hardware failures, and hardware failures don't necessarily affect software or data.
I think you should drive your iMac as hard as you want, keep your data backed up so that you won't lose it if the computer breaks, and be confident that your machine has many years of life in it.
Good luck!

I bought my iPad off a friend and it is hacked. I can't upgrade the software to iOS 5.1 it says unable to update. And something about me not being eligible. I need help please

If the device is jail broken - and the message is that the iPad is not eligible for the requested build - there are tons of articles on the internet that discuss how to fix the iPad. Use Google.

Hard Drive warning when upgrading to Mountain Lion. 2nd try and I was able to upgrade. Software update for IPhoto, had problems restarting. Do I need my hard drive checked

    Yes.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.
When you see a white screen with an Apple logo in the middle, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, and then click Continue.
In the list at the left, select the item you want to repair. (Be sure to select an item that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done.
Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following steps.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and then restore your backed-up data.
If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced

  • I am about to upgrade my eMac to the latest iMac. What can I do to transfer PPC software so the iMac can use my data such as email contacts, safari bookmarks, etc.?

I am about to upgrade from my eMac to the latest iMac. The eMac has given up the ghost at 10 years of age.
I have a full backup of my eMac so could use old email and safari contact/bookmarks,etc.
What is simplest way to do this?
Will the iMac distinguish between old PPC software and new Intel if I try to do a migration from old to new?
Can I use a flash drive to copy and paste required items from old to new?
    All advice gratefully received.

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
      1. Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
      2. Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
      3. All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
      4. Contextual Menu Items
      5. Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
      6. Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

      6. Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
      7. OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
      1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
      2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake
          or there's some other problem.
      3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
      4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
      5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and
registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your
desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
      a. MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch,

      b. MacBook Air - Migration Tips and Tricks;
      c. MacBook Air - Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and
          wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Upgrading OS software 3.1.3 update, neccesary or not?

I recenty read on an apple news that there was a new update called"3.1.3". I been looking for information about the new software update of the 3.1.3, apple says it provides a few glitch fixes on the software on both iPod touch/iPhone. As far as I'm concerned the software update is pretty much related to the Iphone but not much for the iPod touch. But my question is: Does that software update provides any new feature to the iPod touch that I might need to upgrade my software to the 3.1.3 ?

    IrishHighlander wrote:
It also appears to have addressed some wifi issues as I now am seeing signals I never did before and it appears more stable.
Highlander, that seems to that a very important reason to upgrade the software from 3.1.2 to the newer version. I have been noticing a lot of wifi signal drops, sometimes my iPod catch a signal then a minutes later it doesn't even detect no wifi signal. Another thing some crash of my apps have been happening lately, but I don't think it might be some kind of an issue with the software. I might have to upgrade to see if I see some of the problems that apple fixed with the new software 3.1.3.

Why would you not always get the latest software available?
Thanks for clearing a few things about the software 3.1.3 bugs fixing issue. Well, to answer that question is that in my opinion is not really worth upgrading simply no features has been added and I'm still waiting to see if the upcoming rumors of a newer software 3.2. You probably gonna think is pure speculation and is not a concrete notion to think of a software that it hasn't been released yet. But I'm convinced that specially if one look into the ipad beta software" iPhone SDK 3.2 beta". Maybe when the ipad comes into the market for sale( around march)we will see something worth downloading.

  • Do I have to upgrade my software when updating from 10.3.9 to Tiger?

I have pretty much the latest versions of all my software, as far as 10.3.9, anyhow. Mostly, I used Adobe and Macromedia programs, and I use Eudora (I have the latest one- 6.2 - I know they've stopped updating it.)
Also, I still use my Classic environment fairly often... for certain reasons I want to be able to continue using a few old items on this computer. At some point, I'll get another Mac with all the latest and greatest, but this one I need to keep and use the way it is.
The reason I'd put Tiger on it, is because so many things these days need at least 10.4 to run. Including the very latest upgrades for my Adobe software. I go back and forth on whether the possible disrupiton is worth gaining the ability to use more currently available "stuff" that needs 10.4+.
So... I can't seem to find any specifically notes stating that my system 9 software will be okay and run all right in tiger's classic environment, nor whether the programs I use, e.g. Adobe Creative Studio and the DreamWeaver Studio group, will be okay with this update. I hope, too, that things like Eudora, PopChar, Suitcase, etc, will be all right. I will probably update some programs gradually, but am hoping I won't actually HAVE to just because of installing 10.4.
I'll clone my hard drive etc, before doing it, of course...
But, anyway, does anyone have experience of making this change this way, maybe upgrading their software later but not having to do it right away?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is worth doing the upgrade to Tiger. Most or perhaps all your Classic applications will work OK. I still have Tiger & classic works well. You will need the appropriate Tiger retail installation dvd. After installation do all the upgrades. I suggest if the Tiger version you get is less than 10.4.11 that you download the Combo 10.4.11 update from Apple downloads. Then use Software Update to check for any other updates needed. You should run Disk utility after each upgrade and correct permissions.

Sorry about that, yes, 10.5 and 10.6 on Intel can run Firefox 4.
Here's the process to roll back:
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
You could install Firefox 3.6 over Firefox 4 (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this myself!

Then you either have a network problem or a hardware problem or a corrupted hard drive. You might try:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
You can also try downloading from another computer on a different network connection.
