About USB Port Hubs for My Apple iMac Computer?

I Need to know what kind of USB Port Hub I Need for My 2009 24inch Apple Widescreen iMac computer do i need a USB Hub 2.0 or 3.0? i need to get a USB Hub so what kind of USB Port Hub i need?

A parallel query, if you please:  I have several USB devices hooked to my iMAC (Late 2012 running OS X Mavericks)  How do I determine if any of them are USB3?  I think my 1TB HDD (not from Apple store) MAY be USB 3 but I'm nor sure.  Does it have to be plugged into the Left-most USB recepticle?  I am told that DVD/CD burners are NEVER USB 3 because rhey are limited by the maximum rototional speed and servo mechanics.

Hi, is this a question" Post?
or are you just offering an insight into your Mouse Issue?
Generally and at times we all have little idiosyncrasies appearing with the running of our Macs.
I use the same Logitech BT with my MBP. MB & iBook..(not at the same time) Only ever had one issue
and the cure was to completely Delete the mouse from BT -> Repair Permissions & Reboot then Re Install the BT mouse..Ihave just put a new set of batteries in the Logitech (only 2nd set ever)...L

  • Are those USB port hubs safe to use?

I bought one of those Belkin USB 4 port Hubs so that I can have more USB ports on my iMac.
I have the one that needs external power.
I was curious as to wether they can cause any damage to my iMac's ports? Here I am using 4 ports on this hub which is connected to a port on the iMac that is designed for 1 device right? Not 4 devices.
So can using 4 devices via a hub connected to a USB port designed to have 1 device to it, cause any damage to the ports?
Also - what about data corruption?
If I have 4 drives connected to the USB Hub, transferring files between them and to the computer, could this cause data to become corrupt?
So far I've had no problems but I use these USB ports to transfer large amounts of iimpotant data and cant afford anything going wrong..
    -Frank

It is perfectly safe (and encouraged by Apple) to use USB hubs. In fact, USB will support up to 127 peripherals chained together over one USB port. The only concern may be if a hub loses power in the middle of a file transfer, or gets disconnected. But that is the same for everything.
I have used USB hubs for many years without any problems.

  • Solution and problem about USB port shutdown in thunderbolt

    Problem:
Recently, i find that all USB port, audio in my thunderbolt have been disabled and when i restart computer, it will work for a while, i play a song, the audio go through display for a while, then go to Internal Speakers. In System Preferences -> Sound -> Output, i find that Display Audio disappeared. i googled online, i find that USB ports are disable as same time. I went to Apple Store, changed logical board, it DOES'T work. I called them, THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED.
    What i do:
To my knowledge, the thunderbolt display connect to my Macmini by thunderbolt port, the OS recognize thunderbolt as two logical ports, one is video and another is USB ports(just like usb hub). the audio is belong to USB ports. Therefore, i guess that the problem is software, not hardware.
    Solution:
If you have this prolbem, please do not apply any update after 4 april 2012, the files include Java update for OS X 2012-001 to 003, also a flash play update( it is maybe the flashback virus). I am not sure which one cause the problem. Because my work, i have to use time machine every half day to backup my computer, so i restore my OS and find the solution.
    I hope it help you.
    Readman

For most users I don't agree with the above recommendation.  The latest Java updates address the security holes being utilized by the current strains for the flashback trojan and also attempt to remove it if you are infected.  So here's yiour choices:
    1. Must you have sound coming out of your display's not-so-good speakers vs. alternative better sound systems?  If so take your chances, or,
    2. Install the updates to at least check for the trojans (or at least use F_Secure's Flashback Removal Tool) but turn Java off.  Turning Java off is the general recommandation anyhow, no matter whether you update or not.
    3. If you must use Java, and don't update it, risk the possibility of getting one of the flashback trojans and possibility compromising your on-line security.  Here too turn Java off in at least the browsers you use.

My Mac air running OS X 10.9.3 will not recognise anything in USB ports, even thought they are fine on iMac computer and it has happily read them up until today. I have tried inserting slowly and checked preferences to accept Read only devices. Any ideas?

  • About My Apple iMac Computer & Apple iTunes???

just now A Blank Gray Screen Came on when i was on Apple iTunes & I Was Downloading Music & Syncing My Music & Music Video's to My Apple iPod Classic 160GB & then it said it had to Restart My iMac Computer cause of a problem & i pressed ok & words came on the screen to but it did Restart My iMac Computer & i'm back on now & this is My 1st time this has happened & i'm running Mac OS X 10.9.1 Mavericks so is this normal? or is my iMac Computer ready to fail? & also a little screen box came up telling me to Report it to Apple so i did that so i wanted to know if this is normal & that if anyone else had the Same Problem as I Did?
Everything is back to normal now.

Well, when you're going through the first setup on the new one, there is a window that comes up that asks if you want to import anything (from another Mac, or other source), so you'd connect your old Mac to the new one and then should be able to transfer stuff. The new ones have a new kind of port (Thunderbolt), so you'd need a cable with a firewire port on one end and a Thunderbolt on the other for that - or, if you have a firewire cable, you can get an adapter for the one end. If you have it on the Gdrive, you can transfer from there too. Time Machine would be a good thing for you to use or a clone (use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper for it).
Anyway, if all you want to transfer are some files, you could also just drag (copy) them over. Here is some good information:
    http://pondini.org/TM/19.html
You can see there a lots of ways to do it - you just need to pick the one you want to use.

  • Portege R500 - USB ports unresponsive for 35-60 sec after Standby

When my R500 (running Vista Business) wakes up from Standby, Vista is ready to use within about 7 seconds. This would be great except that the USB ports and the Bluetooth function don't wake up for a further 25 to 50 seconds.
I use a USB or a Bluetooth mouse and I find this long start up delay spoils the otherwise excellent user experience.
Has anyone noticed the same problem, and/or does anyone know of a solution?

Thanks to Akuma and Raver for responding. Replies as follows:
    1. It happens with any USB mouse, either wired or cordless. With a basic USB optical mouse it's easy to see when the USB port wakes up because the bright red scanning LED comes on. I start a stop watch when the touchpad starts working and stop it when the LED on the mouse comes on. The delay varies but can be from 13 to 60 sec.
    2. When I use a Bluetooth mouse the delay after wakeup is slightly longer than with a USB mouse. The delay seems to be the sum of the basic USB delay (as in point 1) plus an extra delay for the Bluetooth radio link.
    3. With the same mice on a Toshiba M5 running XP Pro, there's no USB delay and only the quite short delay for the Bluetooth radio link.
    4. Running msinfo32.exe shows the bios as Toshiba version 1.60, 04/03/2008. I've checked for a new bios. The current latest bios on the UK Toshiba site says â??modified 14/03/2008 but when I try to run it I get the message that the bios is already up to date.
    5. The Vista came preinstalled and is fully patched with all MS updates.
    6. I'll look into updating the chipset drivers as suggested by Raver and we'll see what happens.
FWIW, while searching around I noticed three people using Vista on Sony laptops who experienced similar delays with a USB flash drive.

  • 2 USB ports stopped working on Apple Cinema Display

My two USB ports in my Apple Cinema Dispaly stopped working at once. As it doesn't help to do the regular reset of USB or to start up from another HD, it kind of looks like a hardware problem. I just find it weird that this problem suddenly happened in BOTH USB ports while I had all these other software related issues.
I have done disk utility verify+repair, SMC, PRAM, etc. I run the latest software.
QUESTION: Can I run the Apple Hardware test with the Cinema Dispaly connected to see it it really is a hardware issue?

The USB hub in the display is run by the USB cord that is supposed to be plugged into the back of the computer chassis near the display cord.
Is it still plugged in properly?
