Abysmal upload speed? download is not too good eit...

Hello BTCare community,
After attempting to do some streaming tonight (and failing misserably), I have come to realise that my uploading speed is shockingly bad (and my downloading speed is not so good either) and needs to be fixed! I have an unlimited broadband package and paying a pretty penny for it too, i would of expected it to be higher?

are these the hub stats?

I downloaded photoshop not too long ago and then 1 week later got a new computer, is there anyway of putting photoshop on the new computer??

sure, just install and activate.  one license entitles you to two concurrent activations.
if you've already activated on two computers you will need to deactivate (help>deactivate) on, at least, one.

  • Terrible upload speed (download is fine)

I had Infinity installed back in July and whilst the download speed fluctuates it always stays pretty close to the 31Mbps which is the maximum that my line can support.
However my upload speed rarely gets above 0.7Mbps, which is just awful. Occasionally I hit the heady heights of 1.5Mbps, but it doesn't last for long. The upstream ip profile is 10Mbps.
I've done countless speed tests over many weeks (wired & wireless), and power cycled my boxes, but nothing seems to make any difference.
Another annoyance is the ping rate, which fluctuates from about 45ms to 125ms. Most of the time it hovers around 100ms.
I've emailed BT about all of this in the past, but they never responded. Every time I try to call tech support I'm told they are "very busy and to expect a long delay", which kind of puts me off hanging on the phone.
Can anyone explain why my download speed (approx 95% of theoretical maximum) can be so much better than my upload speed (approx 7% of theoretical maximum)? Is this within the range of 'normal', or does it sound like a fault?
The BT Speedtest said there was no performance problem with my service at this time.
    Thanks for your help.

Rather than start a new thread I thought I would update this one.
Short story is, after I initially raised this fault with BT back in October they sent an engineer out who (after much head scratching) replaced the wall-mounted modem and the problem was resolved. My upload speeds weren't amazing (about 5Mbps on average), but were WAY better than what I had been getting. Upload speeds remained steady at about 30Mbps.
BUT THEN... in February I started getting frequent disconnections. Several times each day the line would drop, and then take up to 10 minutes to come back. Ping rates shot through the roof (from about 80ms to about 120ms) and my upload speed came crashing back down to 0.70Mbps.
Also this time, just to add a bit more irritation, the frequent line drops have cranked my upload IP profile down to just 15Mbs, even though when I upgraded to 'unlimited' Infinity a week or two ago it said my max line speed should be in the mid-40s.
So now, my stats are as follows:
    DOWNLOAD = 15.46Mbps (max is 15.97)
    UPLOAD = 0.63Mpbs (max is 20.00)
The BTW Performance Test said "The test result has indicated that you should contact your ISP for further assistance."
So here I am, mods   Please Help!!!

  • MobileMe uploads of photos are not of good quality.

When I upload images from Aperture 3 to MobileMe Gallery the image quality is poor, yet the pictures I have are awesome. How can I improve the quality of images posted to my MobileMe Gallery?

I did check, and the quality was set to medium, now I have set it to hugh, then I delete the previews, the pictures of MobileMe and republished, the quality is now just a much better, but still not what I want but I can live with this.

  • New MEGA 180 - not too good

Well I just built my Mega 180, up for about 48 hours. My quick exp:
I read most of the threads here before buying so I knew what I was getting into...  Anyway, first off with a clean install of XP, the NEC 2500A worked great! I thought I dodged a bullet on that one, but after I installed MC3 and updated some drivers(forget which ) the eject button on the remote stopped working.  It ejects fine from explorer and most other apps. Its apparent to me that MSI is working pretty hard to be sure you buy only their HW on this appliance.  So all you people waiting around for 'a patch' I wouldn't hold your breath.  They are working against you. hard.
PCAlert4 - Worked when I first installed, but wouldnt display fan speed. I updated to the web ver(#.?)  it then it then its stopped sending info LCD completely. I updated my BIOS to the new version. Still wont display to LCD, but app grabs CPU fan speed ok. (1000 rpm variance from BIOS). V. annoying. They should really stop trying to make this stuff look cool and make it functional first. I think after some hacking I can get this to work though. Ideas appreciated.
Clock - displays 24hr clock, fine, but I dont wear fatigues everday! Anyone know to change this?
Radio - Its crap. I was really hoping that the radio would be independent of the OS. I dont want to look at my monitor just to change a stinking radio station(MSI radio). Just because my computer is 'on' doent mean Im sitting in front of it! Cant change "EQ mode" while the computer on, fark... the remote doesnt even change the stations when the computer is on. Volume is all that works. This one really erks me.
Thats about all the trouble I'm having. The rest seems ok; but this MSI 180 is having a huge identity crisis.  Its making me stressed.  I feel like I just forked over $300 for a small case with a clock on the front and an impossible to open DVD player.
    Thoughts appreciated, thanks.

I just wanted to post update.
PC alert 4 - I finally got PC alert 4 to work. There seems to be a conflict with Search & Destroy v.1.3.1. I unintalled on a whim, rebooted, and the LCD reports sys info again. Not positive there is a correlation as no TSRs were loaded, but that seems to be what happened. Fix: jarhead's post led me to remove MSI radio from the 'startup' folder. It worked, they don't like each other in there.
MSI Radio 1.00.01 - I unintstalled both MC3 and MSI radio, and reinstalled MSI radio alone. Most remote functions still don't work as I would 'expect': no preset tuning from remote, can't record from remote, can't change EQ Mode *at all. I guess this is all because its still version 1.. is this the same experience for everyone?
NEC 2500A - Work fine as far as I can tell, but I havent burned much or used it in MC3. But the eject button on the front panel works just dandy.    Its the ir remote eject button that seems to have stopped working. Just wanted to be clear on that.
    TLC continues.

  • Insanely slow upload speeds with normal download speeds -- can anyone help?

I have done LOTS of troubleshooting and I'm coming up blank. I've just moved from CA to HI and have a new ISP, but other machines in the house are not having this issue. I'm having a very difficult time figuring out why I can no longer upload files larger than 1 mb without lots of network stalling and eventual timeouts using most upload tools.
    Here are the facts:
    * It's only the upload speed: downloading is just fine on this machine.
    * This machine WAS fine: No problem with uploads from this machine before I moved from CA. I've had it for about a year.
    * Not the new cable internet: We also have a brand new Macbook Pro AND a PC using the same modem and connection and neither have trouble with upload speed.
    * It's not the tool, the file, or the server I'm trying to upload to: have tried uploading various files, using various web interface tools, to different servers, (flickr uploader, blog upload tool,) including ftp from the command line -- same upload problems. Command line ftp doesn't time out like these other services, but takes a really really long time with lots of stalls (7:13 minutes for 2.1 mb?!)
    * File sharing over our network between this machine and the Macbook Pro are lightning fast.
    * Behavior is the same using airport OR built-in ethernet (even tried two different ethernet cables)
    * Behavior is the same whether I use our internet connection or 'borrow' bandwidth from a neighbor's wireless connection (although I'm pretty sure everyone around here uses the same service?)
It seems to be some strange combination of this machine and my connection? I am stumped and really need to be able to upload files for working remotely!
Any advice would be much appreciated!
    thanks,
    Enola

So after MUCH research and back-and-forth, it appears that my problem here is the upload bandwidth provided by our ISP. They acknowledge there is a problem in our area with upload speed (download speed is excellent) and are apparently working on it. I am still baffled as to why this problem is so much more obvious on my mac mini than my husband's macbook pro, but I'm sure it has to do with all kinds of different variables. We both tried some speedtest sites like the one you mentioned, and we both get crappy upload bandwidth and lots of stalling. At least I know it's not that my machine has something terribly wrong with it. For now, I am making do!
    thanks for your advice!

  • Upload speed stuck on 448 Kbps?

Hi, I am new to BT and the forums so please be gentle and excuse my English.
Here goes my “problem”. I have just finished my 10 day training period and although I’m happy with my download speed (around 7,000 Kbps) I am a bit disappointed with the upload speed. I only get about 300 Kbps what makes me think that I am capped to 448 Kbps which is not too good for me because I use Skype a lot. My previous ISP was Orange and I was getting around 900 Kbps and given the fact that Orange uses the same equipment I assumed that I would get similar speeds. My parents in law who live two hundred meters away get around 700 Kbps with the same BT option.
    1. Is there anything I have done wrong in the training period (I disconnected the hub accidentally in the first hour of the training period, and again about four days later)
    2. Is there anything that can be done to improve the upload speed?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Wifi Antenna not as good as 3GS

I've got a 3GS & 4 in my hands and 1 metre 10 feet from a router the 3GS shows full wifi signal strenth but the 4 only '2 bars'. The speedTest App shows that download/upload speeds are comparatively poor too.
If I am 20 feet away then th e 4 loses connectivity completely from the router and the 3GS is still showing full connectivity with '3 bars'.
Anyone else experienced this or do I have a defective phone?

Can't answer your question, but I do know wifi is pretty unpredictable with many factors involved. How about this....I have a macbook pro that gets one bar (drops connection completely regularly) and an ipod touch that gets 3 bars in the same spot every time. The macbook pro cost about two grand and the IPT was $300. That bums me out a little, but I wouldn't trade the MBP for a dozen IPTs.
My point is if you get two bars and your friend gets three who cares. Two bars will do the job. Its like arguing that your car will only do a 100mph when our friends does 120mph. Be happy....theres other things to worry about.
By the way I am pretty sure the 8,16 and 32 meg IPTs all have the same hardware. Your paying money for storage not better wifi.

  • Download and Upload speeds have been dropping sinc...

I have recently been having seriously problems with my connection, every day the router appears to reset/crash, sometimes once and sometimes more than several times a day.
This was the speed I was getting in December, everything was fine.
Now this is the speed that I am getting.
I'm not sure how this is happening but I have been able to confirm that it isn't an issue within my household, there is only have one master socket which the router is connected to along with a wireless phone thats connected to it.
This is what the results that I got from the router.

I'd like to know if a conclusion could be brought to why my connection has been falling since December. Could it of had been a line switch? Because my connection was fine up until the start of this year.

    Hi lionheart1066
I see Imjolly was giving you a hand with this on another thread.
We still need to try and get you connected via the test socket to rule out external wiring and possible swap over micro-filters too.
I note you mentioned you have an I-plate.  Take this off, as it could be faulty, as you will then see the test socket.  If possible connect up via Ethernet and leave for a day or two and see if this stops the drops.
Its also important to look out for other sources of interference.  You can see a list of common offenders on this link.
If you have tried this out and are still having problems drop me in an email please with your BT account and telephone number along with a link back to this thread.
Just send using the contact us form in my profile under the 'about me' section and mark FAO Craig please.

  • Basic Questions on ActionTec MI424-WR Router - problems with poor download/upload speed

First, I will get to the point and ask my questions, then will explain what's happening - I'm interested in hearing whether the right actions are being taken to solve my problem.
    1) After perusing the forums, I see frequent reference to the "Rev" version of the ActionTec MI424-WR Router.  How do you find the Rev version?  I have logged into the Router and in the "System Monitoring" icon, the Router Status lists my Hardware version as 'A'.  Does this mean I have Rev 'A'?
    2) What is Verizon handing out these days for Routers?  Mine is being replaced, and I am wondering what to expect.  I have Verizon FIOS Phone, TV, and Internet service, and have the 25/25 Internet service.  Will they give me another MI424-WR?  If so, what Rev level are they likely to give me?
Here's why my router is being replaced - opinions/comments/advice welcomed.
For the past year or two, I've consistently measured (via speedtest.speakeasy.net) about 30Mbs download, and around 22-25 Upload.  Lately, I noticed that my downloads were quite slow, so I tested my speed at the above website, which I had not done in many months.  I measured only about 2-3 Download and 1-2 up.  Note all of what I am discussing hear takes place with hard-wired ethernet, NOT wireless.
I tried testing from multiple computers, running XP, Vista, and Windows 7.  All getting consistently similar poor speeds.  I verified my account still is supposed to have 25/25/ service, which I verified online.
Tried rebooting the router, no change.  Then tried hard reset (pushing in the recessed button, holding it for about 20-30 seconds.  After it reconnected to the Internet, I tested speed again.  No change.
Interestingly, I tested wireless speed on the laptop I have.  Speed is MUCH better, around 15 down, and 10-12 up.
I tried the speed optimization tool on two of my PCs, it made no improvement.  Finally, got into an online chat with a Verizon Tech.  He did some tests on the line, we repeated some of the things I already tried, and then he asked how old my Router was...I am pretty sure it is the original one I received when I first signed up for FIOS, around 5-6 years ago, which is one of the reasons I asked how to tell which rev level I had.   So the tech concluded the problem was probably my Router.
I TEND to agree, especially because I recently had an "anomaly" on my network.  My son complained one day that Internet was down.  When I got home, I found out my NetGear Gigbit switch was dead, and two of my hard-wired ethernet network printers could no longer talk to the network.  I replaced the switch, so now I am thinking perhaps the Router was damaged somehow.  I have no idea what the cause of this anomaly was - everything that connects to my network was plugged into Triplite ISOBAR surge protectors, but that only protects AC power.
I would think a hardware failure would completely kill the ethernet portion of the router, not simply reduce speed, but I could be wrong.  Anyone been through something similar to this before?  I expect to receive the new Router next Thursday, so hopefully I should know by then, but still - what should the next steps be if the new router does not fix the problem?
Thanks for any comments, insight or shared experiences you might be willing to share...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    This is embarrassing.
Smith6612, you are absolutely correct, and you nailed it!
When all this mess started, I checked my Verizon account to make sure I was signed up for 25/25 Internet.  I was.
I don't know what has happened, but after reading Smith6612's response, I went back to recheck my account.  I was set up for 15/5!  So, the speedtest measurements I have been getting the last couple of days are exactly what I should be getting.  Two possibilities:
    1) My Triple-Play bundle must have expired in the past two weeks by coincidence.
    2) The Verizon tech may have changed my account profile when I worked with them online last week, although this was never discussed.
At any rate, Smith6612 wins the prize.  It certainly explains the download/upload speeds I am getting.  I have logged into Verizon and signed up for a new bundle.  According to their website, my new profile should take effect Tuesday 1/10, so after that point, I should be measuring 25/25 again.
Thanks to all who responded to this thread.  I will update this thread to confirm after Tuesday.  I get nervous whenever I have to change anything with Verizon - although everything has worked fine for the past few years, we have so many services with them - Cell Phone, TV, Internet, and Home Phone, that I worry something will go wrong with the billing, but we'll see.

  • Download and upload speed issues

Hi I am new to the forum and I am having problems with my broadband speed I get approx 6.8mb download speed but what appears to be happening is when I surf the net the speed is 6.8mb but the problem is when I download the speed drops to max 2mb can be as low as 0.6mb does anyone know why this would be happening, I have read on the forum that you should keep your home hub on 24/7 must admit haven't been doing this usually turn it off when no one is in the house. The other issue is my upload speed is poor only get approx 0.3mb when I was with O2 before I changed to bt in the summer I was getting 1mb upload any ideas how to improve this

Are you on band 13 or band 4?  13 is the original LTE band and remains relatively congested. Band 4 is the XLTE band and is less congested and has higher overall potential bandwidth (15 MHz vs 10 MHz). Even so, 7 Mbps is more than enough for doing stuff on your phone and is not considered slow.
    To check band,
    dial *3001#12345#*
    select serving cell info
frequency band will say 13 or 4
FInd an area with band 4 and retest.

  • Download / upload speed suddenly divided by two, c...

For the past two weeks I noticed that my download and upload speed has been divided by two, I use to enjoy 1.4 meg and it is now down to 0.6megs  it is not a connection issue because it is stable, it looks more like a throttle has been applied to my package. I called support yesterday and they said they would "reset" my line as my connection appears to be slow from their system, nothing seem to have changed yet. My IP profile has also been divided by two and is now 7.5 megs instead of about 16 megs, I am a bit puzzled. See my ADSL stats below

And see below my IP profile, my Max achievable speed was twice what it is now, any idea what could be the cause ?
