AC Power Cord -- how not to get Apple Care replacement - is there a written policy?

I had a cord about 8 years ago that was replaced by Apple Care (it no longer charged the old Mac Powerbook).
Well, my power cord a few laptops on (my present MacBook Pro 2011) needed to be replaced (the connection at the end where the cord meets the body appeared worn -- maybe I streched it out or kinked it too much).   And so I checked here and googled other forums to see if I could take it into the Genius Bar rather than deal with Apple Care on the phone.  It appeared from the discussions here and elsewhere that Powercords were sometimes replaceable, and sometimes not.
The Genius bar refused to replace it.  I'm not upset because, as a temporary measure, where the cord was worn, I opened up the insulation to see if I could adjust the wiring to get the to work.  Tweaking it did get it to charge for another few days (work deadlines!) until I could get to the Genius Bar.  But it's probably because I opened up the insulation that they balked at replacement.
So it goes.
But I do wish Apple Care would've covered it.  It's not super expensive but in this crummy economy, every little bit helps.
Maybe it depends upon the luck of the draw:  who you get to accept (or reject) the return?  Or is this thing warranted only in a "discretionary manner"?  Is there a written policy?
I guess I could try to go through Apple Care on the phone, but I'd have to send my old cord back from what I can tell, and then might get charged for the new one?
Anyway:  just a recommendation:  if you're cord is on the fritz, don't tamper with it to try to get it to work:  you might endanger your chances of getting an Apple Care replacement.

It really depends on how you treat the objects you own. If you kink/bend/twist the MageSafe end of the AC charger what do you expect. There are no kinks or bends or twists in my AC charger and it is 16 months old and wrapped up almost daily to be put in my bag.

  • How can I get Apple to replace my rev a with isight imac?

I'm on my second major repair of my Imac rev a in less than a year. So many horror stories here. How hard is it to get Apple to replace my computer with one that one break down all the time? Any advice would be helpful.
    Roxie

I am currently trying my hardest to get a replacement machine. I have had several repairs on my iMac, (6 trips to the apple store!!) but they have told me that my repairs were not major enough to warrant a new machine. I am sending letters and documentation to as many people in customer relations as possible.
Right now my computer is getting repaired. Again.
    Good luck.

  • How can I get apple to replace my macbook air?

    I purchased a macbook air in mid 2012. It's 13-inch 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5.
Anyways, since I've had this particular computer I've had to take it in on 3 occasions because it kept shutting off, or crashing anything I ran.
They have replaced the logic board all 3 times, and I believe the cost each time is approximately $500 (covered by applecare).
I'm really annoyed by the function of this particular device I've purchased. I really just want to get rid of this computer now.
My question is, how or when will apple decide to trash this computer instead of waste money by replacing the logic board every 5 months?
I would like a new computer. I am fed up of having to take my computer into the store– which mind you is far from my house, only to leave it there for a week before I can pick it up.

I'd suggest making an appointment with an Apple Genius, and discuss your options.

  • How do I get Apple to replace my iPod?

So I took my iPod Touch 4g in to the Apple store to have it replaced today, becuase I've noticed it's noticably slower than my friends' and crashes all the time, but when I asked them about it, they said they couldn't help me because the screen was cracked! Yet even when I explained the problem we present before the cracked screen (which was caused by some dumb kid taking it and dropping it at school), they told me to restore it for the fifth time.
How do I convince them to replace the faulty iPod?

It doesn't matter if the device was acting up before it was cracked. Any sign of a break or crack or 'abuse' or 'neglect' and they will most likely deny replacement on that fact alone.
The most you might be able to get is to get it as an 'out of warranty' repair, which starts at $99 and goes up.
there is no such thing as benefit of hte doubt with any sign of physical damage.

  • How many times does apple care replace a iphone

i had my phone replaced 2 times already for cracked screen and wondering if i can go again to get it a new one i have apple care!

Apple Care does not cover damage to the phone at all... AppleCare + will cover 2 incidents of damage with a $49 per incident deductible.
If Apple replaced your phone when it had a broken screen and didn't charge you for it, you were very very lucky.

  • How do I get Apple to replace my phone while still under warranty?

The sleep/wake button on my Iphone 3G has dropped significantly lower from its original position, so much so that it is hard to push to wake the screen. I've had this issue with the original phone and once before with the 3G and an exchange to get a new phone with apple has never been an issue because this is a known problem with the phone. I took the phone in for an exchange but due to a quarter inch crack in the plastic near the dock connector they refuse to do an exchange or even fix the sleep/wake button. The employee said, "you could get an aftermarket company to put on a new plastic back then take it back in and then we would probably exchange it." Does anybody know of any other solution or similar problems that they've had that can help me? Thanks in advance

wow your issue about sleep/wake button dropped lower from its original position I have never heard of let alone it be a known issue. While I have heard of lots of people with cracks on their casing I for one have had two phones with cracks first one was a small crack by the Dock Connector and apple replaced it no problem second time crack was by the SIM Card Tray again apple replaced it no problem...
If you took it to another company to do any work then apple would not exchange it as you would have just VOIDED the Warranty...

  • Tap to click not working properly in Mountain Lion. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

The tap to click does not work with mountain lion as it did before the mountain lion install. I purchased a brand new imac in August of 2011 and got a wireless keyboard and selected the wireless trackpad instead of a mouse.  The trackpad worked wonderful pre upgrade with tap to click. Now after the install of the newest beast, I have to actually press the trackpad rather than a slight tap. I have carpel tunnel and this is causing great stress upon my hand. How do I get apple to fix this major issue with mountain lion?

Perhaps, I was not clear enough.
I have an imac purchased in Aug. 2011 which came with Lion 10.6 (two uprades before mountain lion)
Recently, I just purchased a macbook pro retina with Mountain Lion
On my imac, my settings allowed me to "tap to click" everything EXCEPT the initial log in at the star up of my imac, again running Lion 10.6
On my macbook pro retina which has Mountain Lion, I set up the "tap to click" option, but notice that a "hard" click was neccessary when trying to click things. I thought this was a macbook thing (my first one) so I went and upgraded my imac to Mountain LIon, BIG MISTAKE! Now both my imac AND my macbook only have limited "tap to click" options. Before mountain lion I could "tap" to highlight and select text, tap and drag, and many other thiings that Mountain Lion has disabled.
I am truly surprised that no one has noticed this MAJOR issue.
Is there a way to uninstall this update, similar to how on a PC you can go back to a restore point.
On another note even the way PREVIEW has changed is less user friendly, there used to be icons on the bottom right corner of the screen, now I have to double tap and select the option I would like to switch between contacts and thumbnails. This is really annoying and is causing me time when reviewing files.
Just in case anyone was wondering, I did go to system preferences -> trackpad -> select tap to click
In fact almost all of the trackpad functions have been selected.

Hook the phone to your computer and restore the phone using iTunes. Your phone is in recovery mode.

  • Vertical line issue - How can we get Apple to address this?

    Hi guys,
As can be seen in this forum (and a lot of other forums, as well), a lot of people are experiencing this problem on their 17" iMac G5 with iSight. Here are some pertinent details (which may be familiar to a lot of people but can be a primer for those who are just starting to experience the problem):
    1. For most of us, these lines started appearing between 13-15 months after they purchased them. The lucky ones either had these failures occur during the first 12 months, or had APP.
    2. The majority of these units can be traced to the Shanghai factory W8 (enter your S/N in this website to get the manufacturing information of your unit: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html).
    3. A similar issue occurred (or is occurring) with 17" PBs. From what I have read on the Apple PB forums, it seems that this has been a long standing issue and Apple has SUPPOSEDLY attempted to censor some of the posts discussing this. Note that these units can also be traced back to the same Shanghai factory.
    4. The "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues" which certain people have always been referring users to on posts discussing this type of problem obviously refers to a totally different issue (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/) and is applicable only to first gen iMac G5s. I'm sure that everyone appreciates it but, at this point, it is quite clear that it is not the solution to our problem.
    5. Based on the number of posts discussing this very same problem in the Apple forums, it is pretty obvious that these are not isolated issues. There are too many similarities (time of failure, how the numbers of line increase over time, manufacturing source, etc.)
    6. Some people have suggested that unstable power sources may be the primary cause of the problem. However, based on the locations of the people with these problems who have posted in this forum, it seems unlikely. From what I can see, the problem happens whether you are from a highly industrialized country (where a stable power source can be expected) or a developing country (where power sources MAY be more unstable).
    7. Apple has typically responded (to anyone who has taken the time to write or have their iMacs inspected) that this is not a known manufacturing defect issue. As such, the cost to repair this problem, which can go up to USD 500, will have to be borne by the owner.
    8. Based on posts of some people who have had their units repaired, it is the LCD that has to be replaced. This is also supported by posts from people who have resorted to purchase a separate display as a workaround.
Now, the question is, *how do we get Apple to address this issue*? Do we all start writing Steve Jobs about it? Do we go to the press? Should we put up a website and Digg it to death? A spoof video on YouTube? MySpace? Or will we just suffer in silence? Suggestions anyone?
P.S. Suggestions that involve any sort of violence or industrial sabotage are not acceptable, please.
Note that Ale_Tog has put up a Flickr page where we can post photos of our poor iMacs. Just send the photo to [email protected] with the subject "Dead pixels on iMac". No text, just the photo attachment. (+Ale_Tog, if you read this, I hope you don't mind me posting this here. Also, I suggest that we at least put the first 5 chars of the serial number, the factory information which can be retrieved on the link in #2 above, and which country the unit is based.+). I highly recommend that everyone send a photo to show that these are not isolated issues.
To get an idea on how many people are experiencing this problem, here are a list of posts in these forums, as well as others, discussing this issue (feel free to add to this):

Please start sending your suggestions. The more the many-ier!

Yep. I feel Apple's 1 year manufacturer warranty for the iMac is not adequate, especially for an all-in-one unit with a relatively high price.
My iMac G5 started displaying a vertical cyan line about 4 weeks ago, only about 19-20 months after I bought it for Christmas in 2005.
I called up Apple to enquire what could be done and was told by their customer service that a rather long period had elasped since the warranty expired in 2006. So I was told to take the iMac to an authorised repair centre and Apple will not contribute to the cost of the repair.
I expect respectable service life from my computer and anything less than 5 years is totally unacceptable. Thus I seriously question the value proposition for the iMac in this respect. Does it mean that I have to replace my iMac every 2 years? The computer still feel reasonably zippy, I still have plenty of space left on my hard drive, but the screen is failing ...
Today another line (green) appeared on the screen ...
It is my understanding that a number of LCD monitor manufacturers are now providing 3 year warranties for their products. Now why should Apple only provide a 1 year warranty? Especially when the replacement option will cost more than buying an entire new LCD monitor with even better specifications?
Based on the number of responeses I have seen here, this is not a rare occurance and I seriously question their quality control in their manufacturing process. I think Apple should be responsible for these repairs, and also provide a 3-year warranty for their LCD screens.
My iMac's serial number is W8548Zxxxxx.
Sincerely yours, an unhappy Apple customer.

  • How can I get Apple to give me an activation key for QT Pro that works?

Stopping at the Genius Bar last night, they suggested I upgrade my QT Viewer to Pro so I could move some of my digital video over to my iPone. I followed the purchase/download instructions and after putting in the activation code, I was NOT redirected to the page to activate the Pro version. I did the usual of retyping ny name, the key and even installed QT Viewer again, all to no avail.
I caled Apple support this morning and was told to call QT support and have them make my key recognizable. The only problem is the number she gave me for QT support says there is no QT phone support, only web information on frequently asked questions and this forum. I sort of feel like I am going in a circle.
So if anyone has the magical answer on how I can get Apple to give me an activation key that actually works without being able to speak or email a human support person, I would very much appreciate it.
    Thank you.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Kirk,
Thanks again for your suggestions. No, I don't get an
error message. In fact nothing happens. My name and
key are typed in and from what I understand, once you
do that with a real key it directs you to the
registration page. When I get done entering the
information the window just sits there without any
    button or option to continue.
QT Pro is already in the QT (non-pro) you installed and the key (which is a hash of your name in part) allows the Pro features to work.
No redirect, internet, nothing like that. As such many people have activated and think they haven't. Just look at the menu items and see if the "Pro" logo is shown next to a few (which are greyed out and not available without Pro). If not you are done.

  • How do we get Apple to respond to the CD burning problem?

How do we get Apple's answer to the problem so many of us are having burning CDs?

Apple responds to problems with their software though KnowledgeBase articles and/or software updates. Except on very, very rare occasions, Apple tech support people will not respond in the Discussions forums. If you want to communicate with Apple tech support directly, you would have to call their tech support forum (the call will not be free).
Have you seen this KB article?
iTunes for Windows: Additional troubleshooting for burning issues
It may not help, but if you haven't seen that article, it's worth a look.
You might also try as a temporary test disconnecting the Lite-On drive and setting the Samsung as master and then see if you can successfully burn from iTunes.
    Regards.

  • How do I get Apple to unlock a Verizon unlocked 4s to use domestically on a GSM network?

I have 4 iPhone 4S's in my family.  The contract with Verizon ended on December 5, 2013.  Early in 2014 I requested from Verizon that all 4 iPhones be unlocked, which was done and confirmed by Verizon.  However, subsequently I have learned that the Verizon unlocking only allows use on international GSM networks (which of course shows that the 4S is capable of GSM usage), and I want to be able to use them domestically.  Apparently, Apple maintains a kind of Black list to restrict usage of the phone to the original domestic carrier.  This is in contradiction to the "Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act", or S.517/Public Law 113-144, which went into effect August 1, 2014.
When I insert a active AT&T GSM SIM card into the 4S I receive the following notice:
The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information.

It's funny that you're totally misreading and understand that law.  All it does is make it legal to 'jailbreak' your device.  It doesn't force the wireless carrier to allow you to unlock the device under the normal means.
Previously, jailbreaking your device was illegal.  Now, it's not.  But it doesn't mean that the wireless carrier, or anyone else, has to provide assistance to you.
Show me where in that law that it states that a wireless carrier must assist you.

Google has a support notice that may explain the problem here: http://support.google.com/mail/answer/82350?hl=en
Apple has a built-in method for setting up Gmail accounts that makes sure that they are set up properly.
Go to System Preferences under the Apple menu and select Mail, Contacts & Calendars. In the left-hand sidebar select the Add Account… item. In the main window select Gmail. Enter the information in the drop down sheet.
As for Pacbell I don't know what the proper settings are and could only find these from a third party so proceed with caution. http://www.emailserversettings.com/category/pacbell
