Ac3 audio strange dipping in and out

Hello:
Audio sounds/looks great in FCP 4.5, exoprt it into aif file, drop aif into Apack using 2 channel stereo, -31 dbfs, 256 kbps, compressoin preset = NONE...when aif plyed back, sounds great, when ac3 played back in DVD SP 2simulator AND on burned DVD-R (whether TV or laptop or G5), certain areas of audio are raised and dipped, such as when nat sound comes up, the music dips way down and back up after nat sound, but this was not edited this way, or when narrator is talking - some times he dips down then comes up in certain areas. Are settings wrong? Why not -27 instead of -31? Is the 256 kbps a problem?
Thanks
KB

What Mark said is largely right, but regarding the DNV setting of -31... this ensures that there is no attenuation of the audio as you convert it to AC3. It isn't a 'safety' setting as such, although I can see how it could be described that way. When you convert audio to AC3 there are a lot of factors to consider. The mix in your NLE is just one of these, and the final output destination is another. When you convert to AC3 you have the option of attenuating your audio so that the powerful disco beat in one scene doesn't blast the speakers after the quietly spoken scene just before it. Getting this setting right is essential to stop your viewer reaching for the volume control every few minutes. If you set the levels exactly as you want them in your NLE or audio editing app, then you shouldn't need to worry about setting up a DNV of anything other than -31. If you do, the amount of attenuation is calculated accoding to a formula:
Attenuation (db) = 31+DNV
So, if you set the DNV to be -31 there will be zero attenuation - the audio should come out exactly the same as it went in (31 + -31 = 0)
In A.Pack, there was a small irritation when setting DNV. If you type in -31 and didn't press the 'return' key, your setting reverts back to -27. Be sure to check that your setting has 'stuck'! It's caught me out more than once.
Head over to http://www.macprovideo.com and get the low down on A.Pack from Martin Sitter. It will cost you a few dollars for this top level tuition, but is well worth it IMO.

I am no musician, but have owned an iMac now for around four years. During that time I have had Garageband installed. I have dipped in and out very occasionally as I would like nothing more than to be able to get my head around it just for my own amusement really. I would at least like to be able to record my electric guitar with loops and tracks etc, just try to be a bit creative and see what comes out. The problem that I have is that perhaps its me, but every time I try to get to grips with this software, I just can't seem to get my head around it, even to begin to do something. I have now recently downloaded 10.0.2 which is confusing in itself, as, as far as I can ascertain that is actually version 11, but I'm not even sure about that. I have also recently purchased a Rocksmith RealTone Cable to connect my guitar. I can sometimes get a sound come out, but nothing to brilliant. And every time I try to set something up, it just doesn't seem to work out. I end up hitting buttons and controls in the simple hope that I may hit the correct control in order to get some sort of result. But I'm kind of fumbling in the dark with this. I have trawled the Internet just trying to find either a good manual or video tutorials for absolute beginners, but there just simply doesn't seem to be anything of that nature out there and what there is appears always to be very sketchy and not particularly detailed in explaining anything properly, and so I always find myself seemingly jumping in with both feet and just struggling to try and find a foothold with this on how to really begin. It is so frustrating as I can see the fantastic potential of this software, but just can't understand how to use it properly. If there is anyone out there who may be able to offer me some advice with this, I would be most grateful indeed... Many Thanks.

Version 10.0.2 is the newest version and the successor to GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.5).
The '11 is referring to the iLife '11 suit of multimedia application - the older GarageBand was a part of this bundle.
Have a look at Edgar's graphical enhanced manuals, the explain very detailed how things work and why. You can buy them as iBooks from the iBook store or directly from the page:

I tried facetiming for the first time and my audio kept cutting in and out.. WHY!? It was so annoying. Does anyone know what might be the problem? Connection? Thanks!

  • 5.04HDV capture-no way to listen to audio to mark in and out?

First time capturing HDV footage and don't get audio on desktop speakers. Audio direct to monitor from deck is way out of sync with picture in capture screen. Not like DV settings that allow you to click on audio to hear in capture mode. Have been through all the setups I can find of without results. Capturing in Firewire. Meters in capture show audio is there and playback of captured material is ok but batch dig. is a horror this way. Dif. setup somewhere? ED.

    Yes I know.
The thing with markers (M) is that these are always placed on the primary storyline, except if you selected a clip in the non-primary storyline. So I don't know why you must first select the Range Selection tool to make in's and out's. Why don't it works just as the markers do.

  • How to run audio through Optical in and out through PC speaker jacks

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a SoundBlaster Z because of the optical audio ports, and I am trying to run Optical audio from my Playstation 3 through the Optical In port and out to my 5.1 Surround PC speakers. I can't find any settings in the control panel (literally there is only one setting, to change the encoder, no other options and profile button doesn't work). I tried running the speaker configuration application but nothing happens when executed. Can anyone provide assistance with this?
I tried using the Auto update application, and go figure, it stops working every time I run it as well. Does any of their software work?

Tried using Creative Diagnostics, and that too does not run at all.Creative Utility.jpgCreative Auto Update.jpg
Is this what the Contol Panel is supposed to look like? It doesn't seem like there is anything to control, besides the volume and encoder.

  • Volume dipping in and out and sounds like its underwater when plugging my guitar amp in through iRig??

I've just got my first mac that I'm just getting used to, but I've been using garageband on my iPhone for about a year with no problems. I've tried recording my guitar on the mac using my iRig which is what I've been using before, and the sound is awful! The volume keeps going up and down and it sounds like its underwater, whereas it was clear as day on my phone. I've tried turning the compressor off and fiddling with different things but nothings working. I'd really appreciate the help if anybody knows what to do. Thanks

Oh, one other spot you might check for level control,
in the Track Info window there is a "volume" control.
This may or may not be enabled ... I kinda' think
for the Mac's Line-In it is enabled
Yes, it is enabled and directly linked to the input volume control in System Prefs. If you have both windows open, you can watch the slider in prefs move as you change the volume in Track Info.
BTW, increasing the various gain controls on my amp does alter the input volume. The change isn't huge, but it is noticeable.
    thanks again.

  • Audio Is Randomly Cutting In And Out In Playback

I have encountered this problem on all recent Premiere projects I've worked on with a variety of audio types. My audio is cutting in and out in a seemlingly random way while the video keeps running fine. Sometimes the audio will play fine for 15 seconds then stop, sometimes it stops and starts after about 2 seconds. I have tried adjusting all of my preferences, settings, audio types, and even video types but the problem always comes back. Spoke to a friend who's new to Premiere and he's having the same problem. Considering moving back to FCP despite the weak interface.
Currently I am editing Canon 5d Mkii footage at 1080p, 29.97 fps. I am using none of the audio attached to the video clips - only editing to a separate m4a music track. My audio is at 44100 Hz. I am playing back video at 1/4 quality. I am running a fully updated Mac Powerbook with a 2.6GHz Intel Core i5 and 8gb of RAM.
Please help, almostly completely unable to edit. Thanks.

I am still having the same issue in Premiere CC 8.0.1 (21)
Exact same issue as the original poster on this thread, as well as the original poster on this other thread:
Premiere Pro CC Audio Cuts Out
So this audio issue persists from version 7 now in version 8.0.1!
For me, audio is cutting in and out randomly and never in the same place. If I have multiple audio tracks on the timeline, then one or more tracks might drop-out at the same time. Sometimes all tracks drop out at the same time. It seems completely random.
I am editing with a combination of P2 footage and DNxHD 290 footage. (I originally had some AVCHD footage, but then I transcoded all of it to DNxHD 290 -- but this did not improve the audio issue at all.)
Two of my audio tracks contain the native camera audio (stereo); 1 track has the music bed (stereo .wav files) and 1 track has sound effects (stereo .wav files)
In one of my projects, I had a very strong reverb effect applied to the track (not to the clip). When the audio dropped out, I could still hear the tail of the reverb. This leads me to conclude that it's not the entire audio track that is muting -- it's definitely the source audio clip that's dropping out. The reverb tail continued after the audio dropped out.
Playing the same part of the timeline again produces randomly different results -- audio might drop out on a different track, or at a different time, or not drop out at all.
This bug is making it nearly impossible to edit! I have filed a bug report at http://www.adobe.com/go/wish_fr
During timeline playback, my CPU utilization never goes above 15% and at least 12 GB of RAM is staying free, so I am pretty confident these drop-outs are NOT caused by lack of computer resources. Also, my hard drives seem to be fast enough to play back 4 streams of HD simultaneously, but I am getting these audio drop-outs when playing back 1 stream of HD plus 4 channels of audio. Therefore, I don't believe this can be a hard drive bandwidth issue.

  • Imovie '11 unable to cope with dipping soundtrack in and out

    Hi there,
I am currently working on a project which is 16 minutes long, on an i5 with 8GB of memory but the last thing to do is to make the music tracks dip in and out, however it seems to be badly running out of memory or at least the ability to do anything with the sound without it having to think for a minute and then messing the whole lot up. I have no other projects / programmes open and it's driving me bonkers. Shouldn't my mac be able to cope with this? Any ideas of what I might be able to do?
    Many thanks,
    Rebecca

Hello,  We are having a similar problem running iMovie '09.  We get the exact same error as you reported.
"Unable to prepare project for publishing" The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred (-50)
We have a very similar situation were we have multiple repeated clips.  However, our clips are 2.4 's.  Like you, we took the finished project and started eliminating edits that we thought might be preventing it from exporting. The following actions still would not allow the project to export:
    removing title pages
    removing transitions
    removing imported music from iTunes
removed another clip from another event
    closed all other programs
closed iMovie, powered off computer, opened iMovie, tried to export
reconfirmed the last project exported would still export - it did without issueThe only difference between the project that will export and the one that does not are these short (2.4's) repeating clips
When we create the new project from the recorded event without making any edits (just as recorded), it exports without issue.  We have started the arduous task of adding back in each edit and testing it for export until we determine which edit is causing it to "not export".  This is a very inefficient way of troubleshooting.
This is a science project for my son and we need to be able to save it as a QT or mpeg4 movie so that he can submit it to his teacher for viewing and a grade!
Any ideas from any other users would be greatly appreciated.

  • I use a Canon VIXIA HFM41 camera with bluetooth WM-V1 mic and receiver. Audio drops in and out.

Trying to figure out why my audio kept dropping in and out while recording a 90 minute presentation this past weekend.
I just recorded 90 mins today in my office of a TV monitor screen and audio - no audio problems. Batteries were fresh and camera was fully charged over the weekend before I had the audio problems. Bluetooth? Could there have been some sort of cellphone interference with the bluetooth audio signal that caused the problem? I was with a group of about 25 people when recording the event - and I was the only person recording video/audio. My camera was about 15-20 feet from the microphone, which was close to the house mic and sound system - but no interference at all with the audio I did capture.
The audio didn't just drop out - it faded out, and would fade back in after several minutes. Video was complete, no interruption or distortion. HELP!

Yes, you can use the 85 watt adaptor. You cannot use the new adaptors because your computer is not equipped with the proper MagSafe connector. But you can use the older MBP adaptors as well as a 60 watt replacement adaptor. All can be found at Apple's Online Store.

  • Trouble with audio dropping in and out?

I had this problem for ages.
Apple TV3 was connected to monitor via HDMI. Monitor audio out was connected to hifi system. The audio was dropping in and out. Fix was to go in the monitor settings and set the HDMI audio to 2.0
Hope this helps someone, as I couldn't find this info anywhere on the net.

an update, switched the G4 laptop out with a G5 tower, keeping the rest of the setup the same, and the music played fine. Switched back to my laptop and the music played choppy. Noticed the CPU was bouncing around quite a bit on the laptop while playing music and that is when the music would cut out. So must be my laptop? Weird as the laptop worked fine for years and that is when it only had 512MB RAM. I did just update the laptop to 10.5 from 10.4 so perhaps 10.5 is the problem?
However I am running Twonhy Media Server on the laptop to stream video from the same server the music is on. I stream it to a PS3 and it streams perfect.
I would seem that iTunes does not efficiently stream music via mounted servers?

  • AC3 audio out of synch

I created a DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4 which included ac3 audio files. When viewing the DVD on NTSC monitors the audio is in synch and plays wihtout issues. When viewing it on Plasma TV the audio is out of synch. Please advise.

Plasma tvs are notorious for having sync drift. I have a Pioneer 43" (I know, showing off!!!) and whilst I have yet to notice it on DVDs I notice drift a lot on Sky TV broadcasts (in the UK) - especially bad on live programmes. I have heard that if you have an HDMI input on your plasma and an HDMI DVD player that sometimes cures it...
Basically it's because some (all?) plasmas have a de-interlacing function which puts a very slight delay on "writing" the picture to the screen. You can get Scart leads in the UK that have a delay built in to the audio to alleviate (Scart isn't used in the US I don't think). Most people don't even notice it...
If the audio is in sync on normal CRT monitors and on your Mac then it's fine...

  • AC3 Audio and Quicktime 7.6 Problem

I was wondering if anyone else is having a problem with opening an audio file with the .ac3 extension in the updated Quicktime 7.6?
What I have been doing, for a couple of years now, is that I capture a TV program from my DVR using the firewire port. Once the file is loaded on my Mac, I then open MPEG Streamclip, trim out the commercials, Export to Quicktime using H264 and 2 channel AAC audio, after the export is done, I would then do a Demux to AC3 to get a separate audio only file containing the 5.1 surround sound.
I would open the .ac3 audio only file, open the .mov video file (both in Quicktime). I would then copy the 5.1 audio track from the .ac3 file, Go to the .mov file, perform Edit/Add to Movie. This way I would have 2 audio tracks, AAC a 2 channel track and AC3 a 6 channel track.
But now with Quicktime 7.6, I cannot open the .ac3 file at all, I get "The file is not a movie file." error message with no error code.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    POSSIBLE SOLUTION
I think I have discovered a way to workaround the AC3 5.1 sound problem.
I found an old 20GB drive and installed Tiger 10.4 onto the drive. I then downloaded the "MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.11PPC.dmg" file and updated the system to Tiger 10.4.11. I performed all of the updates (System Security updates and the Java updates) through Software Update except for iTunes and QuickTime.
I then downloaded the "QuickTime755_Tiger.dmg" file from Apple and updated to QuickTime 7.5.5
    DO NOT UPGRADE TO 7.6
I then opened the TV show in QuickTime 7.5.5, I extracted the audio file from the program and saved as a separate audio file (it saves as a .mov file).
I opened this audio file in QuickTime 7.5.5 and then exported the audio
selecting Export Movie to QuickTime movie,
    clicked on the options button,
the sound box should already be checked,
    clicked on the settings button,
under the Format drop down I clicked on AAC,
    Channels: I clicked on 5.1,
    then Rate:48.000,
    checked on Show Advanced Settings,
    Quality: Normal,
    Encoding Strategy: Constant Bit Rate,
    Target Bit Rate: 384
(used MediaInfo Mac to gate this information),
    clicked OK,
    Clicked OK,
then named the file, saved it and then waited for audio to be converted from AC3 5.1 to ACC 5.1.
If you now open up this file in QuickTime 7.5.5 it is an ACC format with 5.1 and plays fine.
I then restarted to my regular drive with QuickTime 7.6 loaded and it plays the audio file without any problems.
I'm sure that there must be a way to repackage the AC3 audio file in an AAC container that will work better and faster, but for now this seems to work, so I am going to try some other shows that I have.
Let me know if this works for others.
    Bill
