AC3 is silent

I have video that is from a home video. I have made mv2 and ac3 files which import into DVD SP 4 without problems. But there is no sound from the AC3's.
Now the ac3 file plays fine with A-Pack and if I decode the file with A-Pack, the resulting R and L files play fine in DVD SP.
Any ideas on avoiding the extra steps in making the DVD. I have about 100 clips that I am working with.
Thanks
Lewis

Not to be another useless post, but I too am experiencing this problem. I have yet to have the length issue, but my clips are no longer than 2 hours. The only work around I've found is exporting an .aiff from fcp, then exporting the time line as a mp2 in compressor, but only selecting the .m2v file, leaving out the .ac3 conversion. then after thats through I take my .aiff I created earlier and convert that to an .ac3 file. agreed, this is outragous, I can't beleive its a software error?! It my be my stupidity, but I sure can't figure it out....
best of luck, and let me know if you make headway,

  • Silent AC3 files

I just installed DVDSP from the FCP studio (universal binary) on my new quad G5. I used Compressor2 to encode video and audio from FCP 4.5. The aiff files sound fine, but the AC3 files are silent. When I take the aiff files to my old G4 and encode them using a.pack, the resulting AC3 files sound fine.
Why isn't Compressor2 giving me AC3 files I can hear? They aren't DTS, so I shouldn't need a decoder. I've even tried building the DVD with the silent files but they are still silent when played in Apple's DVD Player.

have you tried burning the pproject and playing back on a set top player?
that is the ultimate test, however, i do find it weird that your *.ac3 is silent.
please burn a disc, and play from a desktop and let us know.

  • Silent / Mute AC3 track after encoding in Compressor 2

    Hi,
I exported audio from a 2hr 27min time line in FCP 4.5 to create an .aif file.
I then transcoded it to an .AC3 file on my macbook using Compressor 2. When I listen to it in VLC, it all sounds perfectly fine. But when I import it into DVD Studio Pro 3, it is silent / mute.
I have looked back over this forum and found several people reporting similar problems, without any solution.
    Grateful for any suggestions.
    Thanks
    Jamie

Here is another possibility. If you added you ac3 to a menu or track and then made additional corrections in FCP and recompressed them to the same name, DVDSP has a bit of trouble updating sometimes....not sure why, but a quick solution is to re compress again, but with a different name. then relpace the old one with the new one in DVDSP. same thing happens with video sometimes.

  • Compressor 3 produces silent ac3 files.

I'm exporting files from FCP 5.1.4 to Compressor 3.0.3, using their preset for DVD Best Quality 120 minutes. Compressor run without any problems, produces an m2v file and an ac3 file. The problem is the ac3 file, although 171MB and the correct length, is completely silent. I've played it back using QT, VLC, imported it into DVDSP and even burned it to a disc.
    Help!

Here's where we are now... I've uninstalled Compressor 3, installed Compressor 2. No luck. I installed a.Pack and that didn't seem to work either. Then I re-installed Compressor 3 as well as ffmpegX. (That will convert aiff files to ac3.) Since re-installing Compressor 3, it appears I can successfully convert aiff files to ac3 now using both ffmpegX and Compressor 3. They don't play back in anything other than DSP, but since that's where I need them, I'm not too concerned. So the problem is half solved but it still involves an extra step of exporting and aiff file from FCS and then converting it to an ac3 file in Compressor or ffmpegX. I still end up with a silent file however when I export directly from FCP to Compressor. (Even when I try to play it in DSP.)
Of course now Batch Monitor is messed up and doesn't display anything while I'm converting from aiff to ac3. Any suggestions there?
Thanks to all of you who've offered help!

  • Free AC3 encoding workflow

Like most of you, I was annoyed to find out I couldn't create AC3 surround sound files with my CS4 software, and also that we got downgraded from Audition to Soundbooth.  We all paid a lot for it! I know many people have ranted about that already, so enough said.
Here is a workflow that gets around that problem without ponying up for the SurCode Plug-in, and/or buying Audition!
To convert your mixed 5.1 audio, or stereo audio, to the DVD standard AC3 file that Encore wants, download the latest version of Audacity here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/  It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.  If you don't know already, it's free!
Now, before I start getting flamed, about Audacity, it works great!  The UI is not the most modern, but the quality is top-notch.  I've used it for years and most complaints about it are unjustified.
You'll need to download the latest version: "Beta: 1.3x - for advanced users."  There will soon, I hope, be an Audacity 2.0 stable release. Until then, use the Beta release for this workflow.
Note:  I'll focus on Premiere Pro CS4, because that is where I originally troubleshooted this, but something similar will work for the other Adobe products that use sound.
    Workflow:
Create your mixed 5.1 surround sound audio in Premiere, and output the audio only by going to File > Export > Media, and selecting "Windows Waveform" as the output.  You should only have "Export Audio" checked.  Verify the format in the Summary section.  You should see something like: 48000 Hz, 5.1 Surround, 16 bit.  Now under Audio codec, make sure "Uncompressed" is selected.  Click Okay, and Adobe Media Encoder should launch.  Click "Start Queue" and your audio file will be created.  You'll get an interleaved 6 channel wave file.  Not all applications will open it, but Audacity will.
Note:  When you mix your surround sound in the Audio Mixer, you'll place your little "Puck" where you want the sound to come from.  Picture yourself in the middle of the "dish," if it's a puck, isn't it in a rink, as in hockey rink...ah, but I digress.  Anyway, you'll notice that volume meters in the 5.1 (6 channel) Master section are laid out in the following order: L,R,LS,RS,C,LFE.  Also, if you open a 5.1 audio file in the Source panel, you'll see the same order from top to bottom: L,R,LS,RS,C,LFE.   Soundbooth also does it that way.  Ahh....Adobe...nice try.
The actual channel order should be L,R,C,LFE,LS,RS.  That's the order that you'll probably have to assign in the "Audio Output Mapping" section in the properties menu to get your channels to play correctly with your surround sound hardware.  L,R,C,LFE,LS,RS is also the order that interleaved files use.  So after you create your 5.1 file, and open it in another audio program that displays them in the "proper" order, like Audacity, you'll see your tracks laid out from top to bottom in that order.  I'm not sure why Adobe does it that way, but oh well.
    Surround sound primer:
The LFE channel is not, despite popular misconception, a subwoofer channel.  Bass from all the channels in a surround sound Amplifier is summed and sent out to the Subwoofer.  The LFE channel is supposed to be used only for very low frequencies, to create extra  ...oomph.  I think that is the technical term.  It is not supposed to be used for bass frequencies from the other tracks.  It is for explosions, dinosaur footsteps, ...etc.
Audacity will open DVD ".vob" files, and even let you select which stream (usually Language) to open.  As an example, open up a movie with some action in it like Ironman (The movie starts at "VTS_03_1.vob") and look at the LFE channel.  It's the 4th track from the top in Audacity.  You'll see it's silent except at parts where there is thumping AC/DC music at the Intro, or explosions.  It's not used as a subwoofer channel!
With that in mind, you may have noticed, unless I'm missing something, that there is no way in the Premiere Mixer to assign an audio track only to the LFE channel.  Sure, you can dial up the "Bass Clef" knob to 0.00 db, and send a mono channel's audio to the LFE channel, but there is no place to put the "Puck" that only outputs to LFE.  There is one for the center channel, but without someplace to put it, your 40 Hz dinosaur footprint "Thump" is going to also be assigned to some of the other channels.  Which channels depends on your "Puck" placement.  This is not correct.  Again, unless I'm missing something, Adobe needs to correct this oversight.  We'll get back to this problem with a solution later, but first let's continue with the AC3 issue.
At this point you should have your wave file.  If you want to apply any global changes to all 6 channels, you can open it in Adobe Soundbooth and trim the beginning or end, and apply effects to the entire file.  You cannot, however, make changes to individual channels.  Audacity will!  We'll get to that later.
    Encode with Audacity:
Install the software and go to Edit > Preferences > Libraries, and click on "Download" for the "FFmpeg Library."  This is the library that Audacity will use to create the .AC3 file.  Once installed, the library version should show up next to "FFmpeg Library Version" While the "Audacity Preferences" window is still open, select "Import/Export" and select "Use Custom Mix", this is used to export a 5.1 channel file.  Now you're ready to open your .wave file from Premiere.  Drag and drop it in the Audacity workspace and you should see 6 mono tracks laid out from top to bottom in the following order: L,R,C,LFE,LS,RS.  Audacity will let you edit the individual tracks, unlike Soundbooth, thanks Adobe.  But for now, we'll keep it simple.  Set your "Project Rate" in audacity in the lower-left corner to what you want the AC3 file to be.  For DVD, chose 48000 (Hz).  If you leave it at 44100 (Hz) Encore won't import it.
Your almost done.  Now let's export the file.  Go to Files > Export... > and select "AC3 Files (FFmpeg)" in the "Save as type:" drop-down.  Click the "Options..." button and set the "Bit Rate:" for your file.  For 5.1 AC3 audio, probably 448.  Now enter a file name and click "Save."  This will open the "Advanced Mixing Options" window.  This allows you to re-map the tracks to a different channel order.  It should be correct, and it should show "Output Channels:" set to 6.  Press "OK" and you're done.
Presto, you have a 5.1 channel AC3 file.  Use that in Encore, or whatever DVD creation program you use, and when you play your DVD you'll have full 5.1 audio coming out your surround sound Amplifier.  That is if you have one.
    Test your file:
If you want to test your file, you can do a couple of things.  Since Soundbooth and Adobe  Bridge won't even open AC3 files, and Encore will open but only play the Left and Right channels in the preview, you'll have to either import the file into Premiere, or use another media player.
If you got Premiere to play your surround properly, then you can drag and drop the file into the "Project" panel and preview it from there. You will hear all 6 channels in the correct speakers, but I did notice that the quality is not very good.  Maybe Premiere doesn't decode AC3 all that well.  I heard some crackle that isn't in the file.  How do I know it isn't just a bad encoding job by Audacity?  Because I played the file with the VLC media player, and Cyberlink PowerDVD on the same computer, and also on a DVD in my home theater system with no artifacts.  Maybe Premiere doesn't decode AC3 files well.
The VLC player, will play almost any file in the known universe, and at least on my computer, it automatically played the AC3 surround file, created by Audacity, with all the channels mapped correctly.  That's right, full surround out my speakers with only default settings.  It's a great player.  Get it for free here: http://www.videolan.org/
    Test with Encore:
So far so good. Now open Encore, drop the AC3 file in an empty project, throw it on a Timeline and build the project without Video,  It will autoplay without a menu this way. If you set the End-Action to the same AC3 file it will repeat continuously.  Either burn this to DVD-RW and test it in your DVD player, or better yet, Build the project to a DVD Image instead, and mount it in a virtual DVD   Drive with a program like "Virtual CloneDrive."
If you don't know what that is, or how to do it, it is very simple.  Go to: http://www.slysoft.com/en/ and download "Virtual Clonedrive."  It is free.  It tricks your operating system into thinking you have another physical DVD drive.  In fact, it can create up to 8 virtual drives.  Now you don't have to waste time burning, and erasing DVD's every time you make a change to a project.  You can build your project as a DVD Image from Encore, save the .iso file to your Desktop and "mount" it (load it) in Virtual Clonedrive.  You're computer will now think you loaded a DVD into a physical drive, and launch whatever DVD player you have installed.  Mine launches "Cyberlink PowerDVD" which plays the AC3 audio-only DVD in full surround sound on my computer.
Building and testing projects this way will save you endless hours.  If you need to make a quick change, just "Unmount" the .iso in Virtual Clonedrive, rebuild your project to the same filename, and "Mount" it again.  Instant testing!
Now, as promised, back to that LFE Channel problem with Premiere that I mentioned:
Audacity will let you modify the individual channels in your interleaved 6-Channel file.  So don't put anything in that channel in your Premiere mixer. Leave the "Bass Clef" knobs at full CCW position ( -00 db ).  The bass from the other channels will go to your subwoofer automatically in your Amplifier.
Now if you have some low frequency effects files, open them in Audacity.  You can open multiple instances of Audacity at the same time by going to "File > New."  Then, copy and paste them into the LFE Track at the correct point.
Audacity newbie Hint:  Audacity doesn't yet have a "Mix-Paste" function, so to avoid altering the track length as you paste in your clips, do the following: Select the LFE track by clicking on it's info area.  The info area should say something like "Mono, 48000Hz"  Then press "Delete," That will remove everything from the track.  Now copy and paste your clips into the track by clicking once with the "Selection Tool" where you want the clip to start, and selecting "Edit > Paste."  If you need to fine tune the position of the pasted clip, use the "Time Shift Tool" to move it left or right.  If you work from left to right, then you won't push clips over when you paste new ones in.
There is another way to do this by opening up new tracks, using the "Mix and Render" function, and re-ordering the tracks to maintain the L,R,C,LFE,LS,RS channel order.  But that's for advanced users.
    Where to get thumpy effects?:
Remember, Audacity will open DVD ".vob" files.  Just remember to get permission from the copyright owner.  HeHe.
PS If you can't get your surround sound to work with Premiere on your computer, see my other tutorial.

After further research, there is a better AC3 encoder out there than the FFMPEG that Audacity uses.  It is a more sophisticated implementation of the format.  Unlike FFMPEG, it uses floating point numbers instead of integers internally, among other things.  It is also updated periodically.  Although the pace is glacial.
You can read about it here: http://aften.sourceforge.net/
The easiest way to use it is with a graphical front-end like "wavtoac3encoder" found here: http://code.google.com/p/wavtoac3encoder/
You don't need to change anything from the default settings.
Just follow my tutorial above and instead of using Audacity to create the AC3 file after you are done editing, output the multi-track file in .wav format uncompressed from Audacity.  Then drag and drop it into "wavtoac3encoder"and create your file.
If you don't need to edit the multi-track .wav file from Premiere in Audacity, then just drag and drop that file into "wavtoac3encoder" and encode.
The quality, although probably not as good as SurCode, sounds good to me.
Remember, this is strictly for non-commercial use.

  • Replication house tells me my burned pcm and ac3 is mpeg

Sorry for the double post, just saw this audio section.
I'm having a difficulty with my burned dvds apparently coming out mpeg audio. I exported from pp 1.0 a final mpeg video with PCM audio for my final dvd project. I used Encore CS3 to burn the disc. I sent in the disc to a replication house and they warned me that the audio was mpeg and would not work in all players.
So I checked my original exported file audio in the properties and it said PCM. But, just in case, I put it back in Encore and transcoded it as Dolby Digital (AC3), and burned that disc. I also burned another disc that was PCM.
They just informed me that the two new discs I sent in were not PCM and AC3 but were again MPEG audio.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks very much Ruud. I downloaded the MediaInfo and, if I'm reading the disc correctly, it appears that what I've been puzzled about was easily discovered.
I have a copyright warning as a first play. It was that copyright warning that had an silent audio track under it, and it was MPEG audio. My end action to that is the 88 minute documentary and it clearly says it's transcoded in AC-3.
I'm assuming that I need to reburn a disc and transcode that Copyright warning audio to AC-3 as well or just remove it? Or would you think it will not give anyone trouble since there is no real sound anyway.
I'd appreciate it if you'd look at the below MediaInfo over and see if I'm reading that right. Thanks so much. This is all new stuff to me.

  • MPEG-2 Encoding Results in Silent DVD

I exported a 23.98fps video from FCP to Compressor and then encoded with the MPEG-2 6.2mbps 2-pass setting under the "DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes" folder. The DVD I burned from that file in DVD Studio Pro is silent. No audio. What am I doing wrong? What are the exact steps I should be taking to make a DVD of a 23.98fps
video from FCP without encoding it as 29.98fps?

Encoding via Compressor to DVD requires 2 separate encodes, one for video, one for audio. Video, as you may know already is m2v. The recommended audio encode format is Dolby ac3.

  • Silent Audio Channels in Compressed Output Files ...

Has anyone experienced dead silent audio channels in exported MP3 or Podcast/AAC files?
This is included in the application release notes:
    Exporting to Compressed Formats
" If you export to compressed formats (MP3 or AAC) using devices that do not use class-compliant Core Audio drivers built into Mac OS X on Intel-based Macintosh computers, the audio track of the exported file may be silent. To avoid this issue, use the Audio MIDI Setup utility to change your default output audio device to Built-in or to a device that uses the class-compliant Core Audio drivers before exporting files."
I'm on a Dual PPC G5, and my Motu interface is compliant. All exported compressed files [with or without video in AAC exports] have silent audio channels.
    Any news on this?

    Made no difference.
Original audio is standard from a Sony professional camera. Same

OK, the Master is Stereo, and you have 3 Mono Tracks, that should
mix-down to that Stereo Master, which will not be a problem.
Now, it appears that you have no Sub-mix Tracks. Is that correct?
Check to see what the Track Mapping is set to for each of those Mono
Tracks. They should be set to Master.
Having the Track Mapping set improperly could possibly result in this
type of issue, as DVD's can only have a limited number of Audio
    streams and these are well-defined.
Maybe someone else will have more ideas for you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - as a note, one cannot use ADL to Encore, if the Master is DD 5.1
SS, as that must go through the Minnetonka Audio SurCode DD 5.1 SS
encoder plug-in to get a DD 5.1 SS AC3. That does not seem to be
    your case though.

  • ITunes 9 and Dolby 5.1 AC3 pass through doesn't work

I know that this is an old question. But for me, it still doesn't work. I can pass through Dolby Digital to my 5.1 Home Theater system in VLC Player or EyeTV without any problems. However, in iTunes it still doesn't work. When I select the surround audio track of movies purchased from iTunes, I get no audio at all or a completely silent Dolby 2.0 or 5.1 track. But I didn't manage to get real 5.1 sound. I tried to set the digital output to "Encoded Digital Audio" and selected 48 kHz which should match the right setting for movies. But it still doesn't work. What can I do? Thanks for your help!

    Re Checked it.
Only AAC stereo tracks on bought movies are 44,1 kHz.
    AC3 tracks are 48 kHz.

  • .ac3 files

    Hello
I have.ac3 audio files that work in DVD Studio Pro. Having lost the originals, I need to convert them back to .aif. Used a third party utility for Quicktime called Perian without luck - converted file was silent. Anybody have a sugestion for successful conversion.
    Thanks in advance

Obviously having the original files is preferable as you are using a compressed source by using the AC3 file. But you know that
we have used mAC3dec in the past to do the self same thing. Just google it. Can be a touch flaky but usually works. I seem to remember there being another one on the Mac but can't recall it's name.
Think there are quite a few utilities on Windows that can do the same - BeSweet is one I believe.
    Hope that helps.

  • Unable to Hear AC3 Files

I made a video in FCP 4.5, and exported the video/audio with Compressor. Output to .M2V and .AC3 files. The video looks great, but when I loaded the files into DVDSP4, the files are silent. They take up space on my drive, and the longer the file, the larger the file.
I can't can't hear them. (Yes, I am hearing other things out of my computer, just in case someone wants to suggest my speakers are turned off.)
    Thx,
    Mike

Man, a lot of people have this same problem... And A.Pack crashes on my dual G5, so what else is there to try...?

  • DVD SP 4 and AC3 Files

I've been fighting the problem of exporting directly from FC Express to Compressor 2 and ending up with silent AC3 files. In searching the previous discussions, people advise using A.pack to convert a .aiff file. As far as I can tell A.pack is not shipped with DVD4. Right or wrong?
How do you get to Apple Inc to tell them about this problem?
    Will they bother fixing it?
    Any other suggestions?

    Calvin,
See my post here: Guy Rhodes, "AC3 files made in compressor don't play in DVDSP" #5, 02:07am Oct 11, 2005 CDT
I found a workaround using .AIFF's that works using just Compressor, no A.pack.

  • Missing audio on AC3 encode

I have a small mix that plays fine in Soundtrack Pro. When I export the mix as an AC3 file 2 of the dialogue clips are missing. When I go back to my STP mix they are still in the mix but silent. If I reassign them to a different sub mix and then back to the original sub mix they play again. Unfortunatly there is no way to get them to play in the AC3 encoded mix. Does anyone have an inkling about how to fix this.

I'd start over with a new multitrack and place those files in it to try and track the problem.

  • Deploying Audition 3 silent

    Hello everybody,
how is it possible, to deploy Adobe Audition 3 to 100 Clients silently?
What must I do, to run the setup silent without any hands on it ?
Can you help me please ?
    Thank you !

There has never been native support for AC3 or AAC in Audition, though you might have installed some third-party file filters to enable that functionality.  You might want to download them from http://www.vuplayer.com/audition.php and reinstall them and see if that makes a difference.
The CS5 suite, though, should have had no impact on Audition 3.  Let me know if the above does NOT resolve the problem and I'll see if we can reproduce this problem here.

  • Gaps while playing AC3 Sound through SPDIF on KT6-Delta FISR

    Hi everybody,
    I'm one of those lucky guys with a KT6-Delta FISR Board :D equipped with the C-Media 9739A OnBoard Soundchip and a S-Bracket from my old K7T266 Pro2 ( MS-6380 ) mainboard.
It works great. The only problem is, when I try to play
AC3-encoded Sound directly through SPDIF there are irregular gaps ( length = about half a second ) where no signal reaches my hifi system. Playing normal PCM-encoded Sound works fine, just AC3 is the problem.
I have the latest driver, the latest bios, the latest chipset driver from via & the latest Windows XP Prof. updates.  :]
I also tried different AC3 Filters ( from WinFast DVD, PowerDVD and the free ac3filter ) and a fresh WinXP Prof. installation. But nothing worked.
    Always these stupid gaps.  ;(
The mysterious thing is: With my old MB and an extra pci soundcard with C-Media CMI8378 Chipset and optical SPDIF it works great.
Yeah, I know I could use the old one, but the KT6 OnBoard chip has some benefits  :]
    Some information about my system:
    - Athlon XP1800@1800(133x11,5) ( Palomino Core )
    - Cooling: Copper Silent 2 TC by Arctic Cooling
    - Enermax power supply ( +3,3V/35A, +5V/44A, +12V/15A)
    - NVidia GeForce TI4600 from Leadtek ( i forgot: latest driver   )
    - Western Digital WD1200JB HDD (120GB,7200 RPM,8MB Cache )
    - RAM: 256 MB PC2100, CL2 by Apacer
    - Home-theatre system: Sony STR-KSL5 ( dts,dolby digital/pro logic II, digital cinema sound, 2x optical digital input, 1x coaxial digital input )
    - Connection between PC and hifi system: optical
Has anyone the same problem or maybe a solution or a suggestion ? Would be nice then, when he or she posts it here  )

A little mistake: The S-Bracket is from the KT4 Ultra FISR - Board ( MS-6590 ), sorry for that
    @osnavi:
I don't know whether it's okay or not. I just thought, the S-Bracket is just a cable extension of the onboard pin-connector ( means: there are no necessary parts in it - except the current-optical coverter for optical out - and the whole functionality is on the board ).
Have you any idea, whether there's another S-Bracket for the KT6 series ?
    @maesus:
I've tested all latest available drivers ( both from www.cmedia.com.tw  and from MSI via LiveUpdate3 ). All of them produced this gap.
Both drivers where tested with Coax out and Optical out.
I also tried to increase the PCI Latency in BIOS to give the sound chip more time for using the bus and therefore more time to transfer data. It didn't work, too.
I will now try the following:
    - decreasing the FSB to 100 MHz ( just an idea  , maybe it helps )
    - installing a generic ac'97 audio driver (in case something like this exists )
    - well, bang my head on my hifi system
Any suggestions are still welcomed  )
