AC3 plays on DVD SP, not on DVD player

I encoded an entire movie and trailer using maestro and took that m2v and ac3 file over to DVD SP. In simulation mode there were no issues with playback. The audio/video played properly. However, when we burned the disc to DVD, the audio wouldn't playback on the trailer only. The movie audio was fine.
I then digitized the trailer into FCP and compressed an ac3 file from that quicktime. The audio played correctly in DVD SP and every DVD player I tested.
I checked the audio settings of both ac3 files and their identical.
Bit: 192,000
Sample Rate: 48,000
Sample Size: 16
Ch -2
Does anyone have any explanation as to how this could occur? Are there any ac3 testing programs that could check the files for errors?

So I've run a few tests and I've found that the trailer m2v and ac3 file that I imported from maestro (the one that won't play audio on dvd players)...if I put it alone on its own track and then build/format that then the audio plays on a standalone dvd player. This makes sense since the movie I encoded worked correctly because it was isolated on its own track.
Originally, I had the maestro trailer ac3 and a blank audio ac3 from FCP sharing the same track. Once I digitized the trailer from FCP and compressed it using compressor...the track played the audio on dvd players.
Apparently, DVD SP doesn't like ac3 files that have been compressed using different compression software...even though the bit/sample are identical. Does anyone else have any other explanations?

Let me know what other info you need.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, the lowest possible Burn speed will be a step in the direction of compatibility.
As for the Quality setting, Robert Johnson has done tests on various versions of PE and has recommend a setting of about 7.8 (IIRC). Unlike Encore, where one has many more choices, PE limits one to a Quality setting of 8. This is about equivilent to the recommend 7MB/s in Encore. Robert found that just below the 8 max. actually yielded slightly better results, than did the full 8, on his tests.
The three things that help to insure the greatest compatibility with set-top players are, and in pretty much this order:
1.) Quality media - Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Falcon (US only)
2.) Burn speed (slower is better. It might take a few minutes more, but if it works, you don't have returns or have to do it again.)
    3.) Bit-rate around 7MB/sec
Remember - no set-top player HAS to play any Burned DVD. Most do, but some just do not - only replicated, pressed discs. Also, some player are still sensitive to the -R and +R media types. This is less a problem with newer units, however it still could be an issue with many older ones.
Personally, I test a "master" on four different players, plus my computer, before I Burn a batch, or ship out any. One unit is a very high-end Marantz, another is a mid-level Marantz, one is an RCA "el cheapo" and the other is an older Pioneer. I figure if the disc plays everywhere, there is a good chance that it will play for the client - though there are still no guarantees.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

My DVD drive not reading DVDs, but can read some DVDs with data on it. Device manager shows no errors.
    I tried to reinstall driver.

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • Help, I'm drowning...movies play on computer but not in DVD players

a problem i seem to have with my videos is that when I am done, they play on computers using dvd player apps but when I burn them to a DVD to play in a DVD player they do not play correctly. It drops frames or looks like they skip or something..For instance they play for a couple of seconds, stop, continue to play, stop, continue to play...this goes on throughout the entire video.
What causes this to happen? I've experimented with different compression formats and get the same outcome. I also tried both DVD studio and Toast to burn the DVD and get same results with both.
Is there a basic setting that I am over looking? What is the format that everyone uses when using Compressor? Currently I go from FCP, to Compressor, to DVD...I have nearly went through all the compressor formats and still get jerky,stop/play/stop/play video when going to the DVD format....
    HELP...what am I over looking??

"....and you still haven't converted your audio to Dolby2 as I've suggested since my first post."
YES It was converted in compressor to a Dolby/ac3 file this morning when i mentioned it in my last post .."that I re-compressed it again as a "Best Quality 90...." and said that it fixed about 95% of the jerkiness..."
And since your first post i've only been at the project since this morning...not last night.and it was the first thing i tackled (and tried) when i got in ..When I posted the issue i was at home and not at the office, so Iwas not able to try anything until this morning
So let me re-explain what I have done to the file since 7:30 this AM..
I re-sent it to compressor, compressed at Best 90/Dolby ->AC3....I then opened DVDsp...I dragged both files...(the Mpeg file and the AC3 to the DVDsp window...Simulated and burned..I burn two copies. one for me, one for the client...we use two different DVD players. He says its still a lil jerky...I reply saying yes I saw it on my disc as well.
SO with being said and the file IS currently a dolby AC3...why would it still be jerky?
Would it have anything to do with footage being ripped from another disc?
I really appreciate the help you offering but it sounds like you are being condescending trough your answers and making it seem as though i am not doing what you suggest.

i created a hd slideshow aprox 25jpg images at 1280x720. in dvdsp project preferences are set to hd dvd, slideshow is set to 1280x720p. i have one image set as a menu with one button to play the slideshow. the simulation works fine. the disc burns fine and will play in the computer but not in dvd player. i have tried 4 different players. i also tried setting the prefs to sd then reburn disc. also tried converting the slide show to a track with the smae result. the media im using is imation dvd-r.
any help would be greatly apreciated!

HD discs will not play in SD players. Also changing the prefs to SD will not change an existing HD project to an SD project (you cannot go from HD to SD in a project, you need to recreate it as an SD, though you can change an SD to HD project)

  • HP dv6 DVD drive not reading DVD's

Hi, my HP dv6 is currently running windows 7 and for some reason it will not read DVD's. It will read CD's just fine no matter what's on them. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver and find other sollutions and so far nothing has worked. Please help.
    This question was solved.

Please give us the full model number....dv6-xxxx? An optical drive has more than one laser and sometimes the CD laser is fine but the DVD laser is bad and the only way to fix that is to replace the drive. Are you still under warranty? The only other thing you can try is a dvd laser cleaner disk like this:

This would be a long shot but might work.

    Hi,
I burned a dvd on using DVDSP and it will not play on our dvd player but will play on the macbook pro dvd player. Should I try a DVD-R or are there other considerations that I should be aware of?
    Thanks,

I created dvd's using idvd and successfully played them in our dvd players, but when I created dvd using the same videos, I cannot play them on the dvd player.I used the standard menu template in idvd to create the dvd. I created a menu with HD video in DVDSP is that the issue as to why it won't play?

  • DVD Burned from iDVD 6.0.1 plays on iMac but not a DVD player?

After burning a DVD production on DVD-RW and DVD+RW CDs and both directly from iDVD and by first creating a disc image. In all cases they worked on my iMac but none of them worked on the DVD player. Only the DVD+RW is compatible with the player and it appears the DVD starts to load but can not finish the process. Is there something I missed or is there a bug in iDVD 6.0.1?
The iDVD production was made from scratch using Magic iDVD and some video files. The Map has no errors and there where no error messages.

Is there something I missed or is there a bug in iDVD 6.0.1?
The bug is probably the format you're burning to...
Use DVD-R. I'd recommend Verbatim DVD-R burned at 4x or slower. I'll bet that will play just fine...as long as the DVD player is relatively new (2-3 years old).

  • DVD Created with IDVD Will Play on Computer, But Not in DVD Player

I loaded some video into IMovie, then went to IDVD to create a DVD. It previews fine and the disk burned fine. I can play the disk back in the computer, but when I drop it in a Panasonic DVD Player, it won't play.
I've been burning for some time now and haven't had this problem before. Disks burned two weeks ago are fine, these are not.
I've tried a couple different brands of disks, it makes no matter.
    I'm at a loss.

One of the limitations of iDVD 4 is that 'out of the box' it doesn't support the creation of disk image files - just burning to writable media.
Your problems sound to be high burn error related. With newer versions of iDVD you can create a disk image file out of iDVD and use Apple's Disk Utility to burn the image to writable media at a low (4x or lower) speed. This reduces the amount of burn errors. None of the iDVD versions prior to the current iDVD '08 had any provision for reducing the burn speed.
What brand of media are you using? (Maxell and Verbatim have good track records around here.)

  • Advice on how to make Windows Media Player play DVD's not the Tosh player

I do not want to use the pre-installed Toshiba Media Player to play DVD's, I want to use the installed Windows Media Player. I cannot change the default DVD player to WMP in Control Panel as the only options are either Toshiba's or Nero's player.
WMP can play CD's, MP3's etc but cannot even read any DVD in the drive. Anyone got any advice on how to do change this?
It;s a Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 with Windows 8 installed

The free KLite Codec pack which equips the OS including Media Player for DVD decoding, thus all your currently and even most future installed players. http://codecguide.com/
It comes in varying sizes but even the smallest version enables WMP for DVD's
After installing KLite, you right click the DVD drive within Windows and select the "Open With" or "Play Disc" menu option and select Windows Media Player.
You can also just use the Windows Run Box / Search box and enter
    dvdplay
which activates windows Media Player DVD menus.
Microsoft hasn't always included DVD playback in Windows and then started offered it as a fee based upgrade for XP and Vista, before finally including DVD playback in Windows 7 in what some Microsoft insiders said was an apology for Vista before removing it again in Windows 8.

  • Dvd will not open dvd player

I just created a new DVD video using iDVD, but after burning the DVD and trying to play the DVD on any computer, it will not open unless I open the DVD Player first (I have my settings on DVD Player to automatically open DVDs). Any ideas?

    Hi
Most common origin to this are
    • Use of Cheap DVD brand e.g. Memorex, NoName etc. - I only use Verbatim (more organic dye in them)
    • Burn speed - I set it down to x4
    • Use of DVD-/+RW disks - I only use DVD-R as they also play on older DVD-Players (DVD+R don't)

  • Dvd drive not recognizing dvds but recognizes all other disks

My dvd drive on my macbook will recognize cds both burned and retail. It will recognize mac formated (burned) dvds. But it will not recognize any other dvds. It burns in a non mac format (ie burning a linux ISO image). I was just watching a movie on here the other day with no problems.
    anyone have any thoughts?

    [Edit to above Post]
the DVD drive itself wasn't dead. It was a software based issue. Whether it was an OS issue or a installed software issue is undeterminted. I did a full backup and then reinstalled Mac OSX Lion and the issue was fixed. I do not know what software I installed unfortunetly.
    Hope this helps other people.

  • DVD drive not recognising DVD's

    Hi,
I've a fairly basic iMac G4 which had a standard drive CD-RW fitted.
I've swapped this for a CD/DVD drive out of another redundant iMac but cannot get it to recognise DVD's.
It spins up & mounts CD's fine.
I've done a system re-install (10.3.x as I've got this on CD-ROM) but still no joy.
    Any thoughts anyone, please?
    Cheers,
    TT

There may be a specific replacement series of optical drive best
suited for use in those computer models, so the computer would
see the upgrade optical drive as an original SuperDrive and the
OS install DVD disc could be used to boot the Mac, among other
basic and assumed duties it should then be able to perform right.
My suggestion is to see some other sites with a parts configuration
page for various specific Mac computers and note their reference
part numbers and what kinds of firmware or other differences each
model says it has from the factory. Some brands, such as OWC
has listed as replacement parts in their esales 'other world mac'
site, should be easily spec'd out and a similar item found over there.
You should not have to try and upgrade the optical drive's firmware to
have a replacement drive work in the Mac; the correct drive just will.
The optical drive's information in the System Profiler may be of help
in trying to determine if someone has tried to upgrade firmware in
one of those, to use it in a different model computer than designed.
But from what I've read, that seldom works to change firmware on
an optical drive for use in the iMac G4 series, when it can't work.
PS: your other 2 similar posts are duplicates.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • DVD burner not recognizing DVDs

I've had a mini for quite some time now, and recently in the past few weeks I've had a strange problem where it no longer recognizes burnable/burned DVDs. CDs work fine, retail DVDs on movies work fine, but I am unable to access any of the things I've burned myself.
I've tried 3 of the types of burnable DVDs, and have even dug up some of my old DVDs I burned myself on this computer and they all do not mount. I've checked the system info, and the drive is still being detected as a DVD burner, so I am at a complete loss as to what could be causing this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm having exactly the same problem as this.
The last discs that I burned would have been in October/November, and after that I noticed that the Mac would no longer recognise burned DVD's.
As I need to burn some more discs I've been testing in the past few days and can confirm:
    1. Will not read from burned DVD-R
    2. Will not recognize blank DVD-R
    3. Will recognize blank DVD-RW, but will not burn to them
I'm now searching around to see if it's a hardware or a firmware problem.
The data on the drive from System Profiler is as follows:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835F:
    Firmware Revision: GGND
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Dvd drive not accepting dvd

DVDS not being acepted although cd's are fine?
    any suggestions?

An update for anyone reading this with a similar problem...
I started having issues with my display directly after the Super drive issue, and found out that my iMac had a faulty Motherboard, and had to be replaced. Luckily it was covered by apple under an iMac extended warranty program. If you are experiencing these symptoms it could be a sign of something bigger going bad, and you may want to check out the extension program page. you can find it in the general iMac support page on the bottom right side. Hope this helps - Andy
