Acc tag - iTunes Library unsynced

Hi, I have this very strange problem:
when I try to change some data in some files through the iTunes (i.e. the "artist" field) I see it change in iTunes, but first time I play it it came right back to the wrong one. It happens also by telling iTunes to automatically find track data (it shows the right one, I play it and it comes back to the wrong one).
I tried this:
I opened the iTunes.xml library file, I manually edited the requested fields in the requested "files", but iTunes behaviour was the same, so I assume iTunes was just modifying the library but not the acc tags (even though I tried consolidating).
So I looked for an aac tag editor, I didn't find it, and resolved to manually edit the acc file through an hexadecimal editor. This thing worked (but I had to correct the data in the iTunes library to have everything perfect).
So, my diagnosis:
my iTunes can't modify some aac files (others just works), my library is in one single directory, all files have the same permissions, all files were encoded by iTunes, it happens both with files that have cover and that doesn't, it happens both with files with "ascii" and "strange characters" names, the filesystem is NTFS (through ntfs3g, but it can't be a direct issue of the FS because some files work).
Any ideas why this happens?

Even stranger behaviour: before trying what ed2345 suggested I did a library backup (just for being sure). Then I went to iTunes -> Archive -> Library -> Import Playlist and imported the xml backup. This way the "broken" album lost all accessory data (ratings, play count, skip count etc... what's the purpose of backup if it doesn't save these? O.o) BUT now I'm able to save tags for those files. It can't be a copy/paste problem since ed2345 solution didn't work (basically I wasn't able to save tags until I reloaded a previous library). In favor to the "file problem" thesis there's the fact that I can edit only the files I moved (the other "broken" albums remains broken).
To me it doesn't make sense at all, ideas?

  • How can I get all music "tags" to transfer when transferring an iTunes library?

OK, here's my situation:  I have accumulated about 250GB of music on iTunes on a laptop running Windows 7.  The hard drive was running out of room, and I wanted to upgrade computers.  So I bought a Mac Book with 1TB of hard drive space.
To transfer my library (which includes about equal parts iTunes purchases and imported CDs), I copied the entire iTunes folder onto an external hard drive, and then used the "add folder" function on iTunes to add the entire library to my new computer.  I knew I would lose all data such as last played, most played, etc.  And I knew from past experience that merely transferring the iTunes folder, including the iTunes library file, to the new computer hard drive (without using the "add folder to library" function) would not mean that the new computer would automatically behave as if the exact same library from the old computer was on the new computer.  I hope I am explaining this right.
My problem/question is: many of the music files came over without some of the tags that were on the files in the old computer.  This happened with respect to some, but not all, of the imported CD files.  (I had used the MP3 format when I ripped these.)  The song titles are still there, but many of the tracks say "unknown album" for that artist or, worse, just say "unknown album" AND "unknown artist."  Because I have accumulated so much music over the years, it would take me quite a while to re-tag all he music files with all the missing info.   Again, I'm lucky to have the files, and my iPods containing the music have not yet been synced to the new computer, so I could just manually check what I had on the old iPods and re-add/re-tag the files that were problems.  I  know having such a large folder could itself be the problem.  But adding folders to the computer one at a time does not seem to help, as the "unknown" issue keeps happening even then.
So my conclusions are that one of the following has happened:  either there is another way to import a large library that I should try (Apple migration assistant, maybe?), or I somehow made the transfer from the old computer onto the external hard drive in the wrong way and I'm stuck with things as they are (which would not be terrible, just inconvenient) or there is some limitation in the software of music services that results in many "unknowns" showing up.  These were not obscure records, and iTunes/Gracenote recognized 99% of them just fine when I imported them, but I remember from using Windows Media Player that it was pretty hit-or-miss at times in terms of the right tags being assigned to songs.
Yes, I probably have spent way too much time over the years on my music.  But if there is something I can learn from this, I'd be happy to hear about it, either to fix things easily now or the next time I transfer music.  (Again, all the files had all the correct tags on my old computer, before I copied them.)  I thank anyone who replies very much, in advance!

Just to update: the solution above works.  I had tried to "import" all my files into the new computer rather than just copying and pasting the old iTunes folder into the new computer.  This second, easier, solution is much, much better than re-importing all the songs.  Seems like those little files included in an existing iTunes folder are very, very important!  Without them, I would have had hundreds and hundreds of "unknown" files to re-tag.  As it was, when I copied and pasted the existing iTunes folder into the new computer and opened iTunes, all the files were there, complete with all the date added/date played/number of plays/etc. information from my old computer.  (For some reason, this didn't work when I transferred from PC to PC, but that was several years ago and not a transfer to a Mac.)  I did seem to lose album artwork for a number of albums I had imported rather than purchased, and there was other cleanup to do on a small percentage of files.  But that was a vry small amount of work compared to re-tagging from scratch.  Thanks again for your help.

  • How do i move my itunes library from one acc't to another and then delete itunes on the old acc't?

I would like to set up a media acc't for my family of four to listen to our music library and view all of our photo's.  Then I would like to delete Itunes from my personal acc't.  I have been able to establish a media acc't for all family member's and opened Itunes (i can see all of my purchased songs, but not the ones i have downloaded from personal CD's) to use however, i need assistance in moving over all my music and then deleted the old Itunes from my personal acc't.  Can anyone assist me?
    Thanks.

Locate the song files in the Finder, drag them to a location in the /Users/Shared/ folder, load the shared iTunes library, drag them into the open iTunes application window, and delete the old iTunes library. If desired, you can move the old iTunes library to the Shared folder instead of individually moving the music files.

  • How do i unsync my iphone from itunes library and sync it to a different one without wiping my phone

I bought an iphone 5c and synced it to a windows 7 thinkpad laptop. I backed it up on this device and transferred music off there to my iphone. I recently had an acer aspire e15 laptop and downloaded itunes so i could now do everything i did on my old laptop on to this one, but it isn't letting me unless i sync my phone and wipe its memory. Although i can restore my phone it doesn't restore the music. So is there a way to unsync from one itunes library to another without wiping my data, or is there a way to transfer the music off my phone to my new itunes library so when i restore my phone its easy to restore the music i had on it previously.

The warning message provided is all iTunes content on your iPhone will be erased, not all settings and data. The same applies when selecting to transfer any photos from the new computer. If you had a computer backup for your old computer that included your iTunes library and all photos on your iPhone that were transferred from your computer that could be transferred to your new computer, this wouldn't be a problem.
iTunes includes an option to transfer all iTunes content on your iPhone that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes Store. With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. Or with your iPhone connected, right click on your iPhone under Devices in the iTunes source list and at the menu window that appears, select Transfer Purchases.
There are some 3rd party utilties that provide for transferring photos from an iPhone that were transferred to the iPhone from a computer, but the original resolution of these photos will be lost. When transferring photos from a computer, the photos are optimized for viewing on the iPhone. The same utilities provide for transferring music from an iPhone that was not purchased from the iTunes Store.
Contacts, settings, and photos/videos in the iPhone's Camera Roll are not affected by this.

  • ITunes library mysteriously dissapeared (not the actual files where they are stored) and once I transfered songs back to iTunes, some purchased songs had been corrupted (missing tags

Last week, I purchased around 9-10 songs. The previous day, I had played songs from my iTunes library... everything working normal. The day after purchasing those 9-10 songs... I noticed that my entire songs in my library (and playlist) where gone, essentially being re-set like new. I updated my iTunes version, re-started my PC and still... nothing was showing up except those 9-10 songs. I did the next logical thing which was to check the actual music folder that stores the songs. They where all there. It did not make any sense as I had not done or noticed anything unsual while using iTunes before. Now, I want to mention that I use a DJ software (mixvibe) with the ION Discovery DJ that pulls tracks from iTunes. For the past couple of months they both have worked great. Fast forwarding to my issue, I went ahead and copied all the music back to iTunes. I spent a good hour making sure that everything worked and re-created my playlists. One thing that struck me as odd was that while checking everything... some songs that I had purchased recently and even a couple of months ago that I've used on my mixvibe software... had the track info deleted. The only information was the track name, ex. (01 - Bird One). For some reason, they were dumped into a "Unknown Artists" file. There was a good 20-25 songs that had this issue. The one thing that I noticed was that when I would highlight the song within the Uknown Artist folder... All of the information including cover art was showing up at the bottom of the folder (if you are familiar with Windows 7 you know what I'm talking about). How can it be that all of the actual information was still there yet not showing up in iTunes? I had to manually go one by one of those 20-25 songs and add all of the track info (as much as I could). I was also able to recover some of the cover art but not all. It seems like the files got corrupted. Can I re-download these tracks again or how can I get them to how they were originally? HELP!

I find the best way to do this is to right click on the song in iTunes and convert then select convert ID3 tags to V1.1 this usually completes the tag and adds all the missing info, provided it is in iTunes corectly.
Were these songs you Dled or ripped form a cd directly?

  • ITunes Library and ID3 Tags cause confusion

Okay, so this is what happens. I play a song that has Garage as the genre, but right after I double click on it, the genre changes to Other, and the track name shortens. Now, this doesn't happen with every file, but it happens with enough files to get really annoying. And no matter how many times I change it, it will always revert when I play the song.
I have an idea of what's happening, but I don't know how to fix it. My hypothesis is that the data in the ID3 Tag and the iTunes library are different, and when I edit the song tags in iTunes, it is changing the library data, but not the ID3 tag on the song file. I would use an ID3 tag editor, but all of them I have seen do not give access to Grouping and some of the other fields. I also use Serato Scratch Live, which accesses my iTunes music, for DJing.
Is there anyway to tell iTunes that it needs to write tag data to the ID3 on the song? I have searched preferences, but there is nothing concerning this.

YES... this is seriously messed up. It was the same issue in 7.5 and is now obviously present in 7.6. I would guess that many people don't see it because they never do anything with their mp3s after they are in the library, or if they make tag changes they never have to reimport the files. Or they don't care.
I've spent a LOT of time over the past 6 months cleaning up tags, adding details, adding artwork and ripping CDs and now have about 500gigs of tunes in my library. The symptom is the same.. after I've changed or added tags they look fine. If I then bring them into itunes on another mac (this is a shared drive) the edited tags all disappear and revert to either what they were before my edits, or disappear completely. Interestingly (maybe a hint as to whats happening) if I embedded artwork in the file, IT stays, but other tags revert/disappear.
What is the deal here? I can't really see any pattern, some mp3s were downloaded, some were ripped by me, some are CBR others VBR. I have full read/write permissions. MOST of the time I can edit tags and it sticks. its about 10-15% of them that have problems. I've also tried changing the tag to NONE to remove it and then create a new one but that doesnt consistently fix things either. Its either a conflict between the iTunes database and the embedded tags as you suggest or perhaps a conflict between different ID3 versions.
I'd like to hear how other people have got around this... Looks like I've got about 15% of six months of on again off again work down the drain since the tags don't exist in the files (or they're corrupt now).

  • Itunes Library and ID3 tags

    Hi,
    So here's my problem :
I spent hours cleaning my MP3 collection and re-Writing ID3 tags in order to have a clean Itunes Library without "Blink 182" and "Blink-182" (for exemple) in the Explorer but just "Blink 182".
And importing my tied up music in the library, I noticed that there still was "Blink-182".
    I checked my ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags : They're all the same : "Blink 182".
I don't understand where iTunes takes these artists name since they aren't in the tags.
Can you help me or these hours of cleaning where worthless ?
    Thanks

If you open iTUnes, rightclick the song, hit "Get Info" and the artist field is "Blink 182" instead of "Blink-182" then all you need to do is play the song and iTunes should read the tag and correct the info.
If it does not do this one of the 2 is most likly happening, theres multiple tags on the song that needs to be stripped off using the program "TidyMP3" or windows media player is "Sneaking around" in the background and changing them back based on the info its getting off the net, in which case you will have to open WMP, goto tools>oPtions>Library tab and UNCHECK "Retrieve info off the internet"

  • Exporting a TV Series to another iTunes library - keeping all tag info?

    Hi
I have a TV series that I ripped from my DVDs into iTunes.
There are 3 seasons. All artwork, episode numbers, and seasons are grouped nicely and appear in iTunes exactly how they should.
MY QUESTION IS: Does anyone know how to export and import this nicely grouped TV series to another iTunes library on another PC (i.e. from mine to my sisters library) without loosing all metadata/tags etc.
I did this a while ago with another TV series, but I remember that the movie files are automatically imported into the Movies section of iTunes.
I had to painfully go through all the episodes and seasons and re-group them all again and change them to the TV programmes section - took a good hour and half - do not want to do that again!
    Any ideas would be greatful...

    Hi,
All file formats are .m4v (mp4) which work fine with iTunes which does support tags and when I have imported to another PC, it still defaults to the Movie section, so the 'TV Show' tag doesn't seem to make a difference.
My only problem is that the meta tags (I'm guessing) are stored within the master iTunes Library.xml file and not the movie files them selves, hence the reason why all movie files default to the movie section.
I thought of creating a Playlist and adding all the seasons of the TV series, exporting that (to XML), then re-importing to other PC.
Of course, the only problem is file paths in the XML point to the real location of the mp4 on my PC, not on the PC I want to export to - meh.
    Anyone else have any ideas?

  • Can I unsync a device from my iTunes library?

A friend was upload a video to my computer and in the process accidentally synced thier iPad with my iTunes library.  Now when they plug into their computer it wont register the iPad.  Does anyone know how to fix this? Could I unsync the device from my computer?

If itunes does not recognize the device:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
If it does not show up in itunes, as you say, then how could it say it is synced to your computer?

  • ITunes library should show tracks' playlist"-tag"

Why is there no "playlist" column in the iTunes library where one can select one of the available playlists? This way the name of the selected playlist could show up behind every track that it contains. More important: it will be perfectly clear which tracks not (yet). Great for organizing high volume libraries/playlists!

An excellent suggestion. Here is where you can send it to Apple...

  • Help please...damaged itunes library??

whenever i try to open my itunes library a message comes up that says: the file "i tunes library.itl" does not appear to be a valid itunes library file. itunes has attempted to recover your itunes library and renamed this file to "i tunes library (damaged).itl" This message has come up ever since I downloaded itunes 8...and i tried reinstalling it. Please Help!

same here. dont listen to all the "copy paste move rename" stuff everybody else says to do. i have narrowed it down to a tag issue. a name or some info in the tags on a particular song is typer wrong or something. either that or a whole mp3/acc file is corrupted and you need to replace it. next time itunes does this find out what song itunes loads last and see if the next one has problems. I still have the problem, but it seems all my songs are still there, which is a breakthough for me.

  • Please help! all albums on ipod not showing in itunes library

    Hi,
I 'd be very grateful if someone could help me please. I have an old ipod nano 4 or 5th gen, sorry not sure which. My problem is that only a few of my albums are showing in itunes although they are all on my ipod. I have tried syncing my ipod many times but it hasn't worked. I have also tried i the summary tab, unticking 'manually manage music and videos', but then get a message 'are you sure you want to manually manage music and videos on your ipod? All existing content on your ipod will be replaced with the contents of your itunes library'. Which I don't want, because only a few of my albums are on my itunes library! I want all the music stored on my ipod to go on to itunes, and I don't know why it dissapeared from itunes in the first place...Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mari.

    Hi!
If iTunes is recognizing that there is music on the device that isn't automatically syncing, do this:
1: Go into the iPod area of iTunes.
    2: Find the Music tab.
    3: Select the unsynced music.
4: Drag the music into the Music part of the iTunes library (should be on the left hand side).
It is probably just not syncing automatically because you haven't told it that you want it to sync. This will fix it.

  • "Backup" of iTunes library didn't load everything.

I’m new to iTunes, so please bear with me.
I’m now running iTunes 11.3 under Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.
My son-in-law bought a used PC from a friend some years ago and “inherited” an iTunes installation with hundreds of songs along with it.  He occasionally synched his ipod with the PC, and I created what I thought were backups a few times by simply copying the primary folder to an external drive.
I recently decided to do some much-needed housecleaning, and among other things, I completely removed all parts of the current iTunes environment.  I installed iTunes 11.3 and added the latest backup files from the external drive with the copy option.  I was surprised to find that iTunes skipped a lot of files on the way in without any explanation.  I need help in determining why this happened and what I can do about it, if anything.
I’m sure that you need more information in order to analyze this problem, but I don’t know what you need; therefore, I ask that you tell me what you need, and how and where to retrieve it, and then we can get down to business.
    Thanks.

Technically your son-in-law should have wiped media that came with the computer and put on his own content, unless the original owner of the computer was giving up their ownership of the content at the same time and not keeping copies.
With that out of the way iTunes normally stores all media content inside the iTunes Media folder unless you change some options. By default the preference "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to the library" is enabled. If this is turned off and you drag in files stored somewhere else, like an external hard drive, memory stick, desktop, downloads folder etc, iTunes will refer to those files at their original locations.
This might explain why there were fewer files imported than expected. That said if you restored the library correctly there should have been no need to import anything.
Alternatively there could be a permissions issue. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for details.
Or if the files were in .wav format they don't carry a tag, in which case you might find the missing content is all in the unknown artist, unknown album area of the library. Should this be the problem then if the files are in the correct artist & album folders in the backup, or you have access to older .itl files stored in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder, I have techniques for reconstructing the lost data.

  • Itunes Library will not open!!!!!    itunes Library will not open!!!!!

    Hello,
This is very frustrating that hundreds of people view these questions and only a few people answer. The issue here is that my itunes Library will not open. I'd sure like to know what is causing this and if it's gone forever.
    WinXP. Pro.
I have many Mp3 music files under the same playlist names as in my ipod, i:e: Country,Jazz,Blues,Classic Rock, Alternative, vocal, light sounds, etc. When I drag new mp3 music files into my ipod library, then sync to my ipod, Itunes makes a backup of itune music files in their folder..I think. Anyway, those mp3 muic files are still on the Hard drive, but I can not open up my itunes Library. is it Gone????
Sooooooooooooooo...I was slap-happy in upgrading my itunes software for my 80GB fith gen ipod for the kick of it. I downloaded the new updates.then tried to open my itunes library and it wouldn't open...I hooked up my Ipod thinking that may help open up the Library, but nothing.
I tried the system restore, nothing. I uninstalled itunes, then reinstalled the itunes/quicktime download from apple. I clicked on the itunes icon on the desktop a few times and then a few times more, nothing. I guess I'm missing the itunes.ink file to open this up. regardless, I went to the Windows/Start/programs/itunes...nothing again. Windows Explorer/C:/ program files/itunes...nothing.
I was afraid when I uninstalled the itunes software from before,it would erase the itunes Library, but the music is still on my hard drive,I just can't open the itunes Library. At this point,I should buy an external hard drive and transfer all my Mp3 files and the itunes music files/podcasts/photos,wipe the hard drive, reinstall the O.S. and start all over again.
I'm guessing I am out of options with this itune Libray. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim

Still unanswered. I'm still trying to install itunes so I could use the library. I am removing Mp3 files from my hard drive to free up space,so if I ever do get the itunes setup,I'll have to remove the SYNC and do the manual so I ONLY transfer Podcasts into the ipod and not lose them becuase of the unchecked boxes.
Ok, I uninstalled EVERYTHING that has to do with Itunes/ipod from the computer..Add/remove programs, serch all files/folders,Windows Explorer,Start>All programs, the Itune reference. Turned off all my Firewall, spyware, and anti-virus,,downloaded the new 7.5 version Itunes/ipod...saved to desktop, installed the new software...then NADA! NOTHING! I can click on the shortcut desktop icon, and all the other ways to click the software open, but nothing. peole on other sites reccomend Tag and rename and use the Winamp media Library, because of all the lack of personal customer support APPLE lacks. I guess I was a Big FOOL to spend my hard earned $350.00 for this ipod.
