ACC to MP3 conversion created m4a files

I no longer have an iPhone so I converted my music library to mp3 from acc files to make them compatable with our cars USB flash drive input headunits.
Everything got converted to m4a files.  Is there a way to convert to true mp3 files?

Think I have this sorted out.  My assumption was that the mp3 files would be in the Music\iTunes folder structure.
Folders have the m4a files, however when I cut/paste the file direct from itunes, it pastes as a mp3 file.
So I did a search and found a alternative path (subfolder \music folder) with my entire music library copied as mp3 files.
I guess this is a good thing as I still retained the Apple file version, as well have a seperate mp3 set.

  • Making mp3s instead of m4a files for your own hard drive?

I taped some guys where I work playing some bagpipes. I created an aiff file from FCP to my hard drive. I was trying to figure out how to create an mp3 file from the aiff file. I was able to create an m4a file, but I still have not figured out how to create an mp3 file for the pc'ers to be able to play it on their computer.
    Thanks for any help

In iTunes, go to Preferences > Advanced > Importing. Change the "Import Using": tab fom "AAC Encoder" to "mp3 Encoder".

  • Why are my mp3's and m4a files no longer recognized?

All of a sudden, 95% of the 10,000 music tracks in my iTunes Library has become unplayable. It concerns mp3 and m4a files with music that I purchased and ripped over the years. Wifi syncing to my iPhone 4s made it worse: now the Music app on my iPhone won't play them either.
All tracks added before Mid September 2012 are dead. They can be seen in the library and metadata can be read in iTunes. But when I click on the file, nothing happens. Newer files do play normally, though. MP3's that were not located in the iTunes library also still are playable.
I tried opening the files with VLC player, Quicktime and even on a windows machine. All I get is a message that songitle.mp3 cannot be played because it's format is not recognised.
It has been over a week since I first noticed the problem and I spend many late hours. What is going on? Has Spotlight messed with my music's metadata? Is Apple denying me access to my own files? HELP!
    What I tried:
    - restore files from Time Machine backup: same problem
    - play files on other machines: same problem
    - repair a file with MP3 Scan+Repair. It says: ERROR: Unknown file format!
    - decrypt HD by disabling FileVault: no improvement and Time Machine won't work anymore (Stupid)
    - do a fresh install of Mountain Lion: no improvement
    - restore files from Carbon Copy Clone: same problem (has Spotlight done this while indexing the external HDD?
    - boot from the Carbon Copy Clone (turned out impossible due to the Verbatim external drive that won't boot-should have tested that before I ran into trouble )
    - find solutions in apple discussions, google etc for almost ten days: no solution

You're welcome: I am happy you are thinking along.
We may me on to something: I could not access my account on Sep 11 and did a restore from TM. It did not go too smoothly, but it worked. That's when I decided to pick up the habit of making carbon clone copies again.
Now if something would have been wrong with the songs in the iTunes/Music folder, it must have been copied just as wrong to the carbon clone. Hence the reason why my backed up songs won't play. So you could be right that the files were probably messed up Mid September and not just two weeks ago.
But why haven't I noticed it before? Probably because all the music I like to hear is in my iPhone, that apperently doesn't do to many wifi syncing? It is strange though that for two months I could still play the music on my iPhone.
What did happen just before I could not play them anymore, was the iOS update to 6.0.1. My phone's battery was draining fast and it became hot. Maybe the phone's Spotlight had to re-index? I don't know.
FV was there since Jan, when I set up this machine. I did not run some kind of utility particularly on my music files.
I think you are wise to stick to your OS version as long as it works well. Upgrading usually comes with some issues.
    About my setup:
I started out on another MBP (mid 2009) with 10.5. Upgraded to 10.6 then to 10.7. Had some kernel panic issues, but solved them. The machine got stolen in January and I got my current MBP (late 2011) with 10.7 on it that I upgraded to 10.8 this summer. I started using FV in Jan with the new machine. The theft made me wonder if I shouldn't be more Utilities I use ever so infrequently:
    Onyx
    Drive Genius
    ClamAV
    Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Syncing/Backup takes place to
    Time Machine (full drive)
    iCloud (limited data)
    SugarSync (limited data)
    Dropbox (limited data)
    Google Drive (limited data)
    Carbon Copy Cloner (full drive)
    Other things:
I put a hardware password on my laptop and a use Prey tracking software (not that it helped me to find back my old laptop btw)
I can't remember what utility I was running at the time of the lockout in September. Maybe there was something like Drive Genius running when I had to close my MBP and leave. But since the music on my TM has the same problem, the whole lockout may not be the reason of the corrupted songs.
Perhaps I should just accept my losses. I found an older backup with the oldest 90% of the songs that work. It's just that I am curious to know what went wrong to keep it from happening again.
About moving to another forum: what do you think would be the best choice?  OS X Mountain Lion?

  • How to merge m4a files

I have dozens of lectures from The Great Courses and have been ripping them in iTunes to use on my new iPod Classic 160gb.  I finally took a break to listen and realized that it would be better to have merged all of the separate files for individual lectures.  I had iTunes set to create m4a files.  I do not want to go back and rip all of the CD's again and choose to merge the files in iTunes.  I read on another post from a few years ago that QuickTime Pro could merge m4a files. But, I looked at the current version's description and there is no mention of merging or joining m4a files.
I don't mind purchasing software to do this but I don't want to purchase it if the software will not merge the files.
So...can QuickTime Pro merge m4a files?

    1) Video applications do not always work with audio alone as the OP is using.
    2) The OP has already found a solution.  It was a Mac-specific tool whereas the one mention states:
System Requirements of Allok Video Joiner
      *  Windows 98/2000/ME/XP/2003 operating system.
    3) "Set the quality" suggest it is recoding the file which is not necessary and results in quality loss.

  • "create aac version" only makes another .m4a file...

I am trying to use the "Create AAC Version" (right click on album) to create some files for playing in the car. When I select that option in the dropdown I find iTunes does indeed create a copy of the songs on the album but the file extension is duplicated to .m4a (same as original) and not .acc
Would appreciate any insight into what's going on here or what I'm doing wrong.
    Thanks!

m4a is aac, it's just Apple's way of naming it.  Change the extension to .aac if your car demands it but I am not sure how iTunes will react.  If it is tons of files you can probably find an online bulk re-namer (I use a free one but they charge for it now with newer OSX versions).

  • M4a file conversion

i want to create a music player for my site..but i need to
convert these " m4a " files ..can someone please tell me the best
way to go about doing this?
    thanks for your time

Here's a screenshot of MediaPlayer playing an iTunes .m4a file in the Library browser. As you can see it recognises a bunch of .m4a files in the Library as music files as it has places them in /All Music, it's MediaPlayer 10's Library.
    http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l171/phenworld/MediaPlayerlibraryplayingaac.jp g
I guess you should add files by /Add folder to Library by selecting your iTunes music folder.
I guess the guys at Microsoft didn't want to adverdise their adoption of .m4a/aac as they're trying to promote their obviously crappy .wma format.
Hope you don't have to go through the converting hussle as .m4a/AAC is 100 times better than .mp3 or .wma crap (my opinion).
I also hope Apple doesn't kick me out for posting a Media Player screenshot.:)

How can I convert an M4A file to an MP3 version?

Thanks for your reply but that's not my problem.
I know that I can burn an M4A file to a CD and then import it back as an MP3, but that's an annoying process and wastes blank CDs.  I thought iTunes had a menu choice to convert a selected file to MP3 format.  I guess that's not true with M4A versions.
I will simply buy my music from Amazon from now on and I won't have to deal with this file format and protection nonsense.  I can download music from Amazon in MP3 format as the rest of my music is in.

  • Walkman app not showing my downloaded podcast mp3 and m4a files

    Hi all,
Hope someone can help me with an Issue on my Z3 Compact running Lollipop 5.0.2 firmware.
I have a Music folder on my SDCard which contains all my music files in subfolders and all these files appear in the Walkman app just fine.
I also have two folders called 'Podcasts' - one on the internal storage and one on the SDCard which contain mp3 and m4a files which I have downloaded using 3rd party apps.
I would like to listen to these podcast files using the Walkman app - but they will not appear in Walkman - even if I try the Folders options.but it still will not show either of the Podcast folders.
The weird thing is it lists voices and sounds / voices rom two different SatNav folders which are stored on the SDCard - but not the podcast folders!!
It even lists a folder of foreign language audio mp3 files - but not the podcast files.
The podcast files appear fine in PowerAmp whic even shows the tags and descriptions etc....So, why not Walkman?
I even tried unmounting and re-mounting the SDCard to see if it would rescan - but still nothing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Itunes slow switching tracks on mp3 but not on m4a files?

Itunes is slow (1 minute) switching tracks on mp3 files but not on m4a files. I can't figure out why. My music files are on a network (NAS) drive. When I change tracks between m4a files, I get quick changes between songs (couple seconds). When I change songs on mp3 files, I notice the network spikes usually in 3-4 spikes over about a minute, and then the song starts. Itunes is hanging during that time. If I start a file from the local machine desktop, I see the same spikes. The computer was freshly reinstalled this week, so new itunes install. Also tried reinstalling. I have a second computer on the same network that I tried to duplicate the problem, and that computer works fine on mp3 and m4a song changes. Uses same version of Itunes 10.  Both machines are XP service pack three and a good amout of RAM and run fine with all other programs, so no virus, etc.

I am having the exact same problem.  It's maddening.  It's happening to all of my computers (all Windows 7) and my Apple TV (using Library sharing).  My whole iTunes library is stored on a Buffalo terastation NAS drive.  It's been this way for years and I've never had a problem.  Until you mentioned it, I never noticed that is was an MP3 vs AAC thing.
