Hi,
I am getting crappy real-time Playback in a SD DV (NTSC) timeline with Accelerated GPU Effects enabled. In Ppro 2.0 I would get much better playback. I could throw a DV file with a couple of uncompressed + Alpha DV CG layers on top and get great real-time playback. What happened. Do I need to upgrade my graphics card now that I made the switch to 3.0? or is it just a bug that will get fixed with a update soon? If it is my card what s good ATI card that will give me similar results like I experienced in Ppro 2.0.
Thanks,
KB

Mine was an ATI X800 set at 32 bit with the newest driver. For me the problem existed in the beta, but I have not yet upgraded to the full CS3. (Partly because of this very error. A new version should NOT have new bugs with old features.)

  • Poor Performance over VPN

    Hi All,
I have users complaining of poor performance for TCP applications over a site to site VPN.
I would like to know if anyone knows what to look for when trying to see if we need to reduce the MTU on each side of the VPN.
I dont want to reconfigure MTU unless I have to because one of the two sites is the centre of the hub and I will most likely have to configure it for all of the other sites if I configure it for the one.
the VPNs run between 5510 devices running 7.08 and 8.21
thanks very much for any help

I am having an issue with performance since changing our Linked server connection to SQL 2012.  The query in 2008R2 ran in 9 seconds and now it takes around 10 minutes.  When I trace the query on the 2 servers, the statement is completely different.
    CREATE TABLE [dbo].[PS_OCC_ADDRESS_S](

  • Poor Performance over Converged Networks using LBFO Team

    Hi,
I have  built a Hyper-v 2012 R2 cluster with converged networking and correct logical networks.
However, I notice that I am not able to utilise more than apprx 1gb over the converged network for live migration, cluster, management etc even though they have a total of 8 x 1gb physical adapters available (switch independant, dynamic load balancing).
    e.g
    Hyper-v host1 and hyper-v host2 have 4 x 1gb pNics connected to switch1 and 4x1gb pNics connected to switch2. Switch1 and switch2 has a portchannel configured between them.
I can see if I carry out a file copy between Hyper-v host1 and Hyper-v host2 (both configured exactly the same) then the Management, Live-Migration and Cluster vNics on the host use approx 300mbps on each vNic during the copy but never get anywhere near
their full utilization (here I would be expecting to see approximately the total of the team available bandwidth which is 8gbps as there is no other traffic using these networks).
Is it because the host vNICs cannot use vRSS (VMQ)? Although I struggle to see this as the issue because I don't see any CPU cores maxing out during the copy! Or maybe someone could recommend anything else to check?

Without doing a case study on your environment, it would be pretty much impossible to give you a truly correct answer on what you should do.
In the generic sense, using at least partial convergence is usually in your best interests. If you have a completely unconverged environment, then it is absolutely guaranteed that any given adapter will only have a single gigabit pipe to work with no matter
what. Aidan's example of dual concurrent Live Migrations is good, but it's only one of a nearly infinite set of possibilities. As another example, let's say that you start a hypervisor-level over-the-network backup and at the same time you copy an ISO file
from a remote file server into the management operating system. In an unconverged network, they'll both be fighting for attention from one adapter. If you have 8 total adapters, you can almost guarantee that at least one of the other 7 is sitting idle -- and
there's nothing you can do about it.
If you're converged (dependent upon setup), then you have a pretty good chance that those activities will be separated across physical adapters. Extrapolate those examples to the management OS and a stack of virtual machines, all cumulatively involved in
dozens or hundreds of individual transmissions, and you see pretty quickly that convergence gives you the greatest capability for utilization of available resources. It's like when the world went from single- to dual-core computers. A dual-core system isn't
twice as fast as its single-core counterpart. Its operating system's thread scheduler just has two places to run threads instead of one. But, the rule of one thread per core still applies. The name of the game is concurrency, not aggregation.
Again, that's in the generic sense. When you get into trying to tap the power of SMB Multichannel, that changes the equation. That's where the case study picks up.

  • After Effects CS4 Performance (BRUTAL)

Despite the comments on this board (from Adobe themselves) claiming improved After Effects CS4 performance over its predecessor, my experience is the exact opposite. This version seems half baked to me.
AE CS4 isn't just SLOW, and by slow I really mean dreadfully unusable, It's unstable as well. Even running the same template files that came with CS3 and 4, there's a huge difference in render time, ram previews etc. When you can't even rotate a simple cube without crashing, there's some real problems, and this is just the beginning. The previous version had no show stopping issues, it performed like a trooper. This latest however, I can't see how I could use it day to day for anything..
    There is no other software on this machine other than, CS4, Firefox, and Lightwave 9.5, which by the way, handles textured objects with hundreds of thousands of polys, not 6. I first get an error message that reads as followed;
After effect error: crash occurred while invoking effect plug-in "Live Photoshop 3D"
followed by, After Effects can't continue: sorry, After Effects has crashed. See... blah blah blah..
By the way this occurs with or without OpenGl enabled.
    Systems specs
    8GB Ram
    Q6600
Hard Drive space 4TB, install drive, 156 GB free
    Vista Business 64
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS (driver 178.13)
This is the same machine that ran CS3 very well, so there shouldn't be anything wrong with this rig..

    Fausto,
I have no problem importing or animating your PSD - no crashes, at least. The resolution is very high. I got better results by cutting the resolution of your PSD in half, which may or may not be an option for you. I improved responsiveness a little by setting the PS 3D layer to "Use Photoshop Transform" in AE.
But ultimately, the responsiveness of the 3D layer in AE is impossible to work with, except with Live Update disabled. It seems like a RAM issue to me. What size are the texture layers on each side of the cube? If they're all 3000x2000-ish like your document, and you're working at full res, consider that AE has to hold all six images in RAM, plus manipulate them in 3D.
My own sense is that the whole 3D layer thing simply isn't ready for that kind of resolution in AE yet. And probably wont be until true 64bit code allows the storage of all those textures in RAM more easily.
As a side note, don't know if it's my location or your server, but your 74Mb image took me almost 2 hours to download.

  • P4600 and after effects ... poor performance ?

    Hi,
I have bought a HP Z1 G2 Workstation which contains a INTEL HD Graphics P4600 card.
    (64 bit - Windows 7 -  16 GB RAM).
When I work in after effects, the performance is really slow, especially when creating a simple animation. Changing a keyframe and have the impact updated on the display takes seconds. Which makes the system basically impossible to do video editing work in after effects (which is why I have bought the system). When I do this on my laptop with a K4100, the animations is capable of following my keyframe updates promptly.
P4600 Driver version updated to v10.18.14.4080 (date: 05/01/2015)
At the startup it mentions something about GPU but I don't think that is relevant for Intel graphic cards, isn't it ?
The version of After Effects is CC2014 (latest version - fresh install since last week).
And while reading ADOBE information, my attention is drawn back to this sentence:
Enable hardware acceleration of previews, which uses the GPU to assist in drawing previews to the screen.
This is probably the problem. Doesn't Intel have something like GPU to enable acceleration of preview ? Or can this be done differently on Intel Graphic cards ?
Thanks for any advice that can make my system usable for video editing work.
    Kris

Ray Traced acceleration can only be done with approved Nvidia cards... that is, if you even want to.  The newest AE versions have abandoned ray tracing for the more efficient C4D Lite... which is easier and faster.

  • Is ther a way to speed up a Mac? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.  When memory comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? Is there a way to determine unused programs/software to remove and free space?

Is there a way to speed up a Mac (similar to de-fragging on a PC)? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.
When memory/disc comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? How should I determine what programs/software to remove and free space?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:

OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Photoshop laggy, poor performance with GPU enabled

I'm using Photoshop CS6 for some time now. I had enabled GPU usage earlier and I remember that Photoshop ran absolutely smoothly without and lag what-so-ever. This morning, all of a sudden, it has become extermely laggy. I don't understand the reason behind this. This had happened to me before as well but it became alright after a few days. This also happened to me once while using Photoshop CS5. I didn't install any plugin and didn't change any software. I also want to point out that I had 13.4 driver version when Photoshop was working fine, and now too I have the same driver version.
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
    Memory: 6 GB
    Free storage: 8 GB
    GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5850

I've also noticed poor performance since installing the 10.1 plugin.  Not just in HD video etc, but in general use.  So much for "improved performance"...
No idea on solutions at this stage - In the process of downgrading to previous version to see if that fixes my problems

  • Shared nothing live migration over SMB. Poor performance

    Hi,
I´m experiencing really poor performance when migrating VMs between newly installed server 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts.
    Hardware:
    Dell M620 blades
    256Gb RAM
    2*8C Intel E5-2680 CPUs
Samsung 840 Pro 512Gb SSD running in Raid1
6* Intel X520 10G NICs connected to Force10 MXL enclosure switches
The NICs are using the latest drivers from Intel (18.7) and firmware version 14.5.9
The OS installation is pretty clean. Its Windows Server 2012 R2 + Dell OMSA + Dell HIT 4.6
I have removed the NIC teams and vmSwitch/vNICs to simplify the problem solving process. Now there is one nic configured with one IP. RSS is enabled, no VMQ.
The graphs are from 4 tests.
Test 1 and 2 are nttcp-tests to establish that the network is working as expected.
Test 3 is a shared nothing live migration of a live VM over SMB
Test 4 is a storage migration of the same VM when shut down. The VMs is transferred using BITS over http.
It´s obvious that the network and NICs can push a lot of data. Test 2 had a throughput of 1130MB/s (9Gb/s) using 4 threads. The disks can handle a lot more than 74MB/s, proven by test 4.
While the graph above doesn´t show the cpu load, I have verified that no cpu core was even close to running at 100% during test 3 and 4.
    Any ideas?

  • Looking for help to improve Airport performance over LAN (WAN is fine)

Ok, I've read through several threads on this forum that address problems people are having with slow performance with Airport. I've also checked out all of the Apple KBs that address Airport, recommended settings. Unfortunately my issue isn't addressed by anything I've read to date.
The bottom line is that both download and upload performance between any of my devices and the internet is fine, no problems. I am paying for 30MBps download from Verizon FIOS, I routinely get 20, and I'm guessing that the delta is Verizon's problem, not my network's. However, streaming from my media server to another device on the wireless LAN is a different story entirely. I get somewhere between 1 and 2 MBps, tops, and this poses big problems for streaming music and movies.
My network is comprised of 3 Airport Expresses. One of them is a MC414LL/A model. This one is connected to my Verizon FIOS Actiontec MI424WR router (which I have set to bridge-mode according to the instructions provided at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r17679150-Howto-make-ActionTec-MI424WR-a-network -bridge) via CAT5 ethernet. This Airport Express is set to "create a network" network mode, "802.11 only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g/n" radio mode (although I have also tried "802.11 only (5GHz) - 802.11/n only (2.4 GHz)" radio mode, and this didn't solve the problem). Finally, I have chosen 2.4 and 5GHz channels that have little interference (2 and 161 respectively). My other two Airport Expresses are MB321LL/A models and are set to "Extend a wireless network" network mode, with the 5GHz network chosen as the network that they extend. (I have tried switching over to having them extend the 2.4GHz network, and performance gets worse, not better.)
I am using a late 2009 Mac Mini as a media server. It is connected to the 5GHz network (though I've tried the 2.4GHz network), and it runs XBMC and JRiver media servers (not simultaneously, either one or the other.) I have a PS3 and a Sony Blu Ray player, each plugged into one of the MB321LL/A Airport Expresses via CAT5 ethernet, and I stream media to each of these devices via one or the other media server (both devices are DNLA-enabled). My Mac Mini has a 3TB external hard drive connected via FireWire 800, which is where all of my media resides. In addition to streaming media over the network, I have a TV plugged directly into the Mac Mini. When I play media to this TV, performance is outstanding, so I'm confident my poor performance to the PS3 and Sony BDP is a network issue, not an issue with the external drive.
Although my building has several other wireless networks, only one of them is 5 GHz, and it isn't using channel 161. The 2.4 GHz band is crowded with several networks, although channel 2 is usually in the clear. I have tried switching let Airport choose a channel automatically, and I haven't noticed a difference. It has occurred to me that the problem could be with how I bridged the Verizon Actiontec router and not with any of the Airports, but I don't get any errors (e.g. double NAT errors, which some people who have bridged improperly get), and I am pleased with my download and upload speeds to the internet. The issue is only on my LAN. Finally, yes, all of my firmware is up to date, version 7.6.3 on all three Airport Expresses.
Can anyone offer me suggestions for how I can get better performance streaming media from my server to the two playback devices? Since all 3 Airport Expresses support 5GHz, I'd have thought I'd be able to take advantage of 802.11n speeds when streaming between them. (MB321LL/A  supports "Draft N", but does this matter?) With the settings that I'm currently using, I can't stream faster than 2MBps (and that's on a good day), which is below what I ought to be able to get rom 802.11g. This is especially problematic when I try to stream hi res (96 MHz / 24 bit or higher)  music files, whether uncompressed or compressed. I hear awful pulsing sounds through my speakers. If I pause the track and let my streaming device buffer, I might get 10 or 15 seconds of clean playback, but then it starts the pulsing again as soon as the buffered music is finished playing. On occasion when I stream music from my iPhone via Airplay to one of the Airport Expresses, I get clean playback most of the time, but on occasion the music cuts out. (It's my understanding the Airplay requires ~800 Kbps, which seems consistent with my LAN speed usually being between 1 and 2 Mbps but sometimes dropping).
I have iStubler and I've used the Apple network diagnostics -- these are the tools that led me to choose channels 2 and 161 for 2.4 and 5GHz respectively. I'm sure I could be using these tools to learn more about my network's performance, but I'm sure what to look for.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

Ok, cool. I'm really glad that the issue has been isolated. Thanks a ton for your insight!
Hopefully I can find a spot where the signal strength of the hub is noticably better but that isn't too inconvenient for an ethernet run. My Sony BDP, which is the device connected to the problem basestation, has wifi capability, so I could always ditch the ethernet cable if the best spot for the basestation doesn't permit a cable run. But I'm aware that ethernet usually offers faster transfer speeds than wifi. Moreover, I'm not sure that the Sony BDP supports 5GHz. It might be a 2.4GHz-only device, in which case I'll have new interference issues to contend with, since like I said in my original post, there are several other 2.4GHz networks in my building.
Anyhow, now that I understand the problem, I can figure out a solution. Thanks again.

Apple maps has received a poor performance rating just after introduction of the iPhone 5. I am running Google Maps app on the phone. SIRI cannot seem to get me to a specific address. Where does the problem lie? Also can anyone tell me the hierarchy of use between the Apple Maps, SIRI, and Google maps when the app is on the phone? How do you choose one over the other as the default map usage? Or better still how do you suppress SIRI from using the Apple maps app when requesting a "go to"?
I have placed an address location into the CONTACTS list and when I ask SIRI to "take me there" it found a TOTALLY different location in the metro area with the same street name. I have included the address, the quadrant, (NE) and the ZIP code into the CONTACTS list. As it turns out, no amount of canceling the trip or relocating the address in the CONTACTS list line would prevent SIRI from taking me to this bogus location. FINALLY I typed in Northeast for NE in the CONTACTS list (NE being the accepted method of defining the USPS location quadrant) , canceled the current map route and it finally found the correct address. This problem would normally not demand such a response from me to have it fixed but the address is one of a hospital in the center of town and this hospital HAS a branch location in a similar part of town (NOT the original address SIRI was trying to take me to). This screw up could be dangerous if not catastrophic to someone who was looking for a hospital location fast and did not know of these two similar locations. After all the whole POINT of directions is not just whimsical pasttime or convenience. In a pinch people need to rely on this function. OR, are my expectations set too high?
How does the iPhone select between one app or the other (Apple Maps or Gppgle Maps) as it relates to SIRI finding and showing a map route?
Why does SIRI return an address that is NOT the correct address nor is the returned location in the requested ZIP code?
Is there a known bug in the CONTACTS list that demands the USPS quadrant ID be spelled out, as opposed to abreviated, to permit SIRI to do its routing?
Thanks for any clarification on these matters.

siri will only use apple maps, this cannot be changed. you could try google voice in the google app.

  • General poor performance of my Mac mini

I have been using my mac mini for over a year, it continues to frustrate me how slow and unresponsive it can be even though I do very little with it, i.e organise photos and browse the web - usually looking for solutions to the poor performance problem!
I came a cross this app that has given me lots of information, unfortunately with my limited IT know-how there is nothing here that gives me any clues, as to the cause of the problem. I guess the red font is not good?
I'm sorry i can't be more specific about the problem other than to say that iPhoto and Safari the two programmes i use way more often than any other, keep giving me the beach ball. My internet speed is ok 25 Mbps down - 4.5 Mbps
Is there anything here that stands out as being wrong? if so any suggestions/ instructions for what I should do?
p.s. i had to quit Safari while writing this and have a report for this if it helps?
    Any help much appreciated.
    Problem description:
My mac is just generally very slow. I only use it to look at the internet and manage photos.

    Hi Linc Davis
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I got this information from a time when I was opening up iPhoto, and then going to the iCloud folder. To be honest it wasn't the most disastrous of events, I did get a few beachballs and when I opened up a shared folder the photos weren't loaded as normal. As I get more lengthy delays in carrying out any activities I will post back the console results.
Just as a bit more info, I don't consider my problem an update to Yosemite problem, if anything since updating performance has been improved from Mavericks.
Do you have any comments about upgrading RAM from the 4GB I have?
Should I act on any of the messages in red from the EtreCheck report?
    Many Thanks
    Duncan

    exe #2 : elapsed = 6.34s, query = 24272, current = 151, rows = 25
If I run just the select portion of the statement, using bind values from exe #2, I get small number of gets (< 10), and < 0.1 secs elapsed.

This problem is part of testing of a database upgrade and country go-live. On a 10.2.0.3 test system (non-RAC), the same insert/select - using the real WF_Item_Attributes_Value table takes :
call     count       cpu    elapsed       disk      query    current        rows
    Parse        1      0.00       0.00          0          0          0           0

total        2      0.00       0.10         10         27        136          25So I'm struggling to understand why the performance on the 10.2.0.4 RAC system is so much worse for this query, and why it's doing so many gets. Suggestions, thoughts, ideas welcomed.
I've verified system level things - CPUs weren't/aren't max'd out, no significant paging/swapping activity, run queue not long. AWR report for the time period shows nothing unusual.
further info on the objects concerned:
    query source table :
    WF_Item_Attributes_PK : unique index on Item_Type, Name. Index has 144 blocks, non-partitioned
    WF_Item_Attributes tbl : non-partitioned, 160 blocks
    insert destination table:
    WF_Item_Attribute_Values:
range partitioned on Item_Type, and hash sub-partitioned on Item_Key
both executions of the insert hit the partition with the most data : 127,691 blocks total ; 8 sub-partitions with 15,896 to 16,055 blocks per sub-partition.
WF_Item_Attribute_Values_PK : unique index on columns Item_Type, Item_Key, Name. Range/hash partitioned as per table.
    Bind values:
    exe #1 : Item_Type (:B1) = OEOH, Item_Key (:B2) = 1048671
    exe #2 : Item_Type (:B1) = OEOL, Item_Key (:B2) = 4253168
    number of rows in WF_Item_Attribute_Values for Item_Type = OEOH : 1132587
    number of rows in WF_Item_Attribute_Values for Item_Type = OEOL : 18763670
The non-RAC 10.2.0.3 test system (clone of Production from last night) has higher row counts for these 2.
    thanks and regards

    hi Sven,
    Thanks for your input.
    1) I guess so, but I haven't lifted the lid to delve inside the form as to which one. I don't think it's the cause though, as I got poor performance running the insert statement with my own value (same statement, using my own bind value).
    2) In every execution plan I've seen, checked, re-checked, it uses a range scan on the primary key. It is the most efficient I think, but the source table is small in any case - table 160 blocks, PK index 144 blocks. So I think it's the partitioned destination table that's the problem - but we only see this issue on the 10.2.0.4 pre-production (RAC) system. The 10.2.0.3 (RAC) Production system doesn't have it. This is why it's so puzzling to me - the source table read is fast, and does few gets.
    3) table storage details below - the Item_Types being used were 'OEOH' (fast execution) and 'OEOL' (slow execution). Both hit partition WF_ITEM49, hence I've only expanded the subpartition info for that one (there are over 600 sub-partitions).

  • Invalid block count and poor performance

    Hi - Can anyone help?
Running an early 2011 13' MBP on ML. For a year - 18 months I've noticed poor performance at times, consistently slow boot (sometimes 5 minutes to usable), occasional lockups and spotlight often reindexes itself and slows the system (much more than my previous MBP), I can't see anything that triggers it. I'm also getting recurring errors in Disk Utility of 'Invalid block count', every time I'll repair the disk (booting into recovery), but after a month of use the error will reappear. About three months ago I erased and reinstalled ML, some of my data was moved over in Time Machine but I didn't restore from it. The erase and reinstall hasn't made any difference and I'm still seeing the same issues. Hard disk SMART status appears to be fine.
Can anyone recommend any troubleshooting steps? I'm not sure what else to do, still under Applecare and was thinking maybe the HD isn't working correctly?
    Cheers!

  • Crashing and poor performance during playback of a large project.

    Hi,
I've been a regular user of iMovie for about 3 years and have edited several 50GB+ projects of DV quality footage without too many major issues with lag or 'dropped frames'. I currently have a 80GB project that resides on a 95% full 320GB Firewire 400 external drive that has been getting very slow to open and near impossible to work with.
Pair the bursting-at-the-seams external drive, with an overburdened 90% full internal drive - the poor performance wasn't to be unexpected. So I bought a 1TB Firewire 400 drive to free up some space on my Mac. My large iTunes library (150GB) was the main culprit and it was quickly moved onto the new drive.
The iMovie project was then moved onto my Mac's movie folder - I figured that the project needs some "room" to work (not that I really understand how Macs use memory) and that having roughly 80GB free with 1.5GB RAM (which is more than used to have) would make everything just that much smoother.
    Wrong.
The project opened in roughly the same amount of time - but when I tried to play back the timeline, it plays like rubbish and then after 10-15 secs the Mac goes into 'sleep' mode. The screen goes off, the fans dies down and the 'heartbeat' light goes on. A click of the mouse 'wakes' the Mac only to find that if i try again, I get the same result.
I've probably got so many variables going on here that it's probably hard to suggest what the problem might be but all I could think of was repairing permissions (which I did and none needed it).
Stuck on this. Anyone have any advice?

I understand completely, having worked with a 100 GB project once. I found that getting a movie bloated up to that size was just more difficult with jerky playback.
I do have a couple of suggestions for you.
You may need more than that 80GB free space for this movie. Is there any reason you cannot move it to the 1TB drive? If you have only your iTunes on it, you should have about 800 GB free.
If you still need to have the project on your computer's drive, set your computer to never sleep.
How close to finishing editing are you with this movie? If you are nearly done except for adding audio clips, you can export (share) it as QuickTime Full Quality movie. The resultant quicktime version of your iMovie will be smaller because it will contain only the clips actually used in the movie, not all the saved whole clips that iMovie keeps as its nondestructive editing feature. The quicktime movie will be one continuous clip, incorporating all your edits and added audio. It CAN be further edited, but you cannot change text of titles already there, or change transitions or remove already added audios.
I actually do this with nearly every iMovie. I create my movies by first importing videos, then adding still photos, then editing with titles, effects and transitions. I add audio last, and if it becomes too distorted in playback, I export the movie and then continue adding audio clips.
My 100+ GB movie slimmed down to only 8 GB with this method. (The large size was due to having so many clips. The movie was from VHS footage of my son's little league all-star game, and the video had so many skipped segments that I had to split it into thousands of clips to remove the dropped ones. Very old VHS tape!).
I haven't upgraded to QT 7.5.5, but I heard that the jerky playback issue is mostly resolved with this new upgrade. I am in mid-project with about 5 iMovies, so I will probably plod along with my work-around method, not wanting to upgrade in the middle of any of them.
Hope this is helpful to you.

  • Skype crashing and poor performance

    Hello!
I have a Lumia625 with WP8.1. My problem is that Skype has a really poor performance on my phone. It crashes 6 times out of 10 on startup, and even if I manage to start it, the whole app is slow and laggy. Sometimes I can't even write a message it's so laggy. Video call is absolutely out of the question. It crashes my whole phone. I have no similar problems with other instant messaging apps nor with high-end games. There is something obviously using way more resource in the Skype app than it's supposed to. It's a simple chat program, why would it need so much resource?
The problem seems to be originating from the lower (512 mb) RAM size of my phone model, because I experienced the same effect with poorly written apps, that don't keep in mind that there are 512 RAM devices, not only 1GB+ ones, and use too much resource.
Please don't try to suggest to restart/reset the phone, and reinstall the app. Those are already behind me, and they did NOT help the problem. I'm not searching for temporary workarounds.
Please find a solution for this problem, because it is super annoying, and I can't use Skype, which will eventually result in me leaving Skype.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When it crashes on startup it goes like:
    I tap the skype tile
The black screen with the "Loading....." appears (default WP loading screen). Usually this takes longer than it would normally take on any other app.
For a blink of an eye the Skype gui appears, but it instantly crashes.
If I can successfully start up the app, it just keeps lagging. I sart to write a message to a contact, and sometimes even the letters don't appear as I touch them, but they appear much later altogether. If I tap the send message button the whole gui freezes (seems like it freezes till the contact gets my message). Sometimes the lag get stronger, and sometimes it almost vanishes, but if I keep making inputs when the lag is strong, sometimes it crashes the whole app.
When I first installed the app, everything was fine. But after a while this behavior appeared. I reinstalled the app, and it solved the problem temporarily, but after some time the problem re-appeared. I don't know if it's relevant, but there was a time when I couldn't make myself appear online all the time (when the app was not started). In that time I didn't experience the lags and crashes. Anyways, what I'm sure about is that the lags get worse with time. Idk if it's because of use of the app (caching?), or the updates the phone makes to itself (conflict?).
I will try to reinstall Skype. Probably it will fix it for now. I hope the problem won't appear again.
