Accelerating AVCHD in CS4

I have Premiere CS4 and do not want to upgrade at this point in time. With CS4, is there any way to accelerate playback of AVCHD footage? On my current system, the footage plays ok for a few secs and then starts to judder. Scrubbing the timeline is impossible. Am I correct in thinking that certain NVIDIA CUDA cards accelerate playback of AVCHD in CS4 like they do in CS5? If so, which card is recommended for CS4?
Thanks

No. The MPE was added with CS5. This ARTICLE on MPE might be helpful. This also might be a good reason to upgrade, but the CPU is still very important with AVCHD and H.264 footage.
The only way to accelerate the heavily-compressed AVCHD footage is by upgrading the CPU. That is where most of the work is done.
A stout I/O will help some, but the big load is still on the CPU.
Good luck,

  • AVCHD in CS4 working realtime only under  MAC OS X

Even Dual Xeon (8 cores) MAC Pro with 8 GB RAM is not a realtime AVCHD playback machine in CS4, under any Microsoft OS.
I tested the same AVCHD footage under MAC OS X Leopard in CS4 and under Windows Vista on the same MAC hardware and the result is smooth realtime playback under MAC OS X and NO realtime playback at all under Windows Vista 64 bit SP1.
I guess that is the reason that in Adobe they use MAC based system for demonstration of AVCHD in CS4 !!!
For example: In the link http://tv.adobe.com/#vi+f1510v1000, Dave works in CS4 under Mac OS X, not under Microsoft OS.
Any other smooth playback experience under Windows Vista with AVCHD footage on MAC PRO dual Xeon?

    Did you get this resolved..
I am using Internet Explorer v. 5.2 on Mac OS X v.10.2.8. I have successfully run an applet, using jre 1.3.1 which implements the "showDocument" method and opens a new page.

  • Acceleration in Scaling - CS4

I am using CS4 and have used scaling in some still photos to achieve the "Ken Burns" affect.  The result is as expected.  However, I would like to ease in and out of the motion by smoothly changing the acceleration of the motion.  I have read the CS4 manual looking for instructions on doing this and I can't find it.  Nothing is mentioned about acceleration adjustments to scaling and motion.  I can achieve it in a manner by setting keyframes at various points in the clip but the acceleration does not change smoothly.  I want to start the motion slowly, build to the maximum and then gradually slow it at the end of the frame.  Any asistance would be appreciated.

  • Buyer Beware:  AVCHD and CS4

Greetings fellow Premiere CS4 users!  This message is a cautionary tale...my cautionary tale...but it does have a hopeful ending.  So I encourage you to read on.  Also, if anyone out there has found a solution to this with Premiere CS4, I'd be delighted to hear from you.
I share this with a heavy heart, having been a Premiere Pro user and advocate for about a decade.  Bottom Line Up Front?  The CS4 release is incapable of cutting my AVCHD material (H.264, MP4, 1080, 60i).  Interestingly, CS3, with the MainConcept HD plugin, worked pretty well.  Memory issues when the projects got large (understandable with a 32 bit app), but all in all, a stable, robust editing environment with good export and DVD authoring capabilities.
The problem with CS4...and I don't know if others have had the same problem...is that 1080i material plays at double speed.  Thus, a 10 second clip has 5 seconds of video and 10 seconds of audio.  The video plays "overcranked";  the audio plays normally.  Obviously, it is unusable.
This is particularly interesting given Adobe's claim that CS4 edits AVCHD formats native.  This, in my experience, is not the case.
I did, as you might imagine, open a trouble ticket when I discovered the problem in September 2009.  I have heard from an assortment of people in the last 5 months (Banish, Abhishek, Nargis)...and all have assured me that they would work with me to find a solution.  Someone called a couple of weeks ago and scheduled a live telephone support session -- but no one showed up at the appointed time.  Today I received a message from Adobe tech support asking me for a response or they would close the ticket.  An interesting development, considering the last entry in the ticket log was from me in November 2009.
While cycling in this do-loop with Adobe support, I purchased the new MainConcept plugin for CS4.  The problem didn't go away...but I did contact MainConcept with the same issue.  They re-wrote their application to overcome the Adobe bug.  However, CS4 would not edit the material "native" -- red in the timeline -- and required lengthy rendering to edit normally.  So:  score one for MainConcept, raspberries for Adobe.

    Hello
Absolutely no problem to import, play and edit SAN0084.mp4 file  here...
No color in timeline, no discrepancy beetween sound and video.
    Premiere Pro CS4.2.1
    Project preset AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) (non-anamorphic)
    QX9650 à 3 GHz - Asus P5Q3 - Windows 7 64 bits
    4 GB DDR3 PC12800 - Nvidia GTX275
The same file plays without problem on Windows Media Player 11.
Are you sure about your project and sequence parameters.
Have you checked in metrage requester of file (right clic on your file in bin, just above properties) that "Use frame frequency from file"is checked ?
Interestingly, this file is identified by PPro like XDCAM-EX type.
Sorry about your problem but it's not a PPro CS4.2.1 versus AVCHD problem.

  • 1080i AVCHD and CS4

I have a couple of questions regarding CS5 vs CS4 dealing with AVCHD files.  First, I have an HP DV7 running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, Intel i7 Q 720 /2 1.60GHz laptop with 6GB of ram.  I  have been editing HDV footage with CS4 and have had no issues to speak of.  I am looking at the
Sony  HXR-NX5U NXCAM camcorder.  I understand that the work flow is a bit different and have the Sony PDF outlining the steps.   Below are my questions before I purchase this camera or CS5:
    1. Can CS4 handle this video format well?
    2. Is my computer robust enough to handle this format?
    3. Would things run smoother with CS5?
    4. If I upgrade, any issues with my CS4 projects opening in CS5?
    5. Are there instructions to cleanly uninstall CS4 so I can install CS5?
    Thanks so much,
    Lisa

#2 - if you have at least two 7200rpm hard drives (physical drives, not a partition on one drive) you will be able to edit... albeit slowly
If you only have one hard drive, and an eSata external for video files, you will also be able to edit
Trying to edit with only one drive will likely be a problem

  • Frame rate issue with AVCHD and CS4

I've been using a Canon HG20 recently and the whole experience of AVCHD has been a nightmare. I finally have a computer that can handle playing the native files in the Premiere timeline but it looks like there's a problem with the frame rate. It was shot at 1920 x 1080 and the frame rate was set at 60i.
When starting a new project I used the AVCHD 60i preset and the clips don't need rendering which tells me the settings should be correct. But something is definitely very off. I thought there was a slight chance it was a performance problem so I tried burning footage to a DVD and it looks exactly the same. Here's a clip I uploaded that shows the problem:http://www.vimeo.com/6443990
Does this look familiar to anyone? Any ideas on what the disconnect between the camera's settings and Premiere's settings might be?

It looks like it might be skipping frames or something. The movement looks wrong.
Just realized something. Please forgive my ignorance, it's only my second day using CS4. The clips I place into the timeline have a yellow bar above them. So I'm guessing this means that the frame rate of the clip doesn't match the project settings. I've tried all of the AVCHD presets. I can't place a clip in any of them without the yellow bar. When I right click on a clip and select 'properties' it shows the frame rate is 29.97. So what's with the yellow bar if the project settings match that?
Is there a way to tell if the HG20 shoots in 24p over 60i? And if that's the case how does that affect my project presets?
I have to be making some kind of simple newbie mistake here.

  • Imorting AVCHD Problems - CS4

    Hi there,
I'm trying to import AVCHD recorded video from my new Sony HXR-NX5U Camera into adobe premiere pro CS4.
First I copied the video files off the camera onto my computer, from there I started a new project in adobe premiere and selected AVCHD 1080-24p and then in the media browser I go and locate the files. Adobe Premiere reads them as importable files, so I drag and drop from the media browser into adobe. Then I drag and drop into the sequence.
Everything is good. But when I try to play back the sequence, all I get is very stuttery/barely playing video and full volume white noise.
Now the video/audio works fine on the camera, it works fine on T.V., I managed to pull the audio fine into my computer straight off the camera, and I managed to export a quicktime video with relative smoothness - but still some visual distortion and glitches at the very beginning and the audio was still white noise. But I managed to replace the audio with the audio I pulled in straight off the cam.
I know its most likely something I'm doing wrong or maybe my computer is missing some video codecs/drivers?
I noticed, when first creating a new project, my only video capture options are DV and HDV, yet I had noticed on some videos some people had quicktime as an option.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks
    *edt*
I imported the half-working quicktime .mov I had initially exported and then replaced the audio with my audio program nuendo and it plays back as it does on my computer. So it would appear as if my problem lays within the AVCHD format, HD Video, or maybe high resolution video, etc, etc. Maybe my computer can't handle it?

  • Your CPU Specs for working AVCHD in CS4

I have been reading plenty of mixed reviews about some people having no problems running, and previewing AVCHD material without transcoding, and others saying that it doesnt run for them unless they do transcode, or their system is too weak.
For those of you who have NO PROBLEM editing and previewing native AVCHD footage could you please post your CPU Specs? I would like to get this post to be kind of a guide line for system performance, considering the "recommended" specs are WAY WAY off.
    Thanks.

    Kevin,
with the below mentioned config I can edit 2 AVCHD tracks (Sony CX6/7) in the timeline realtime , watching the CPU often at 100 %, realtime view for editing is not always perfect but still manageable, i.e. this works for basic editing purposes.

  • Sony HXRMC50U Ultra AVCHD Camcorder CS4???

Has anyone used this camcorder before? How is the quality? Is there any problems with importing footage into CS4?

How (step-by-step) are you getting the files from camcorder to PPro?
For my Canon Vixia, I simply use WinExplorer to copy the individual MTS files from SD card to hard drive, and then import into CS5
For other cameras, I have read that required "metadata" is contained in the folder structure, so an entire folder must be copied from camera to computer... often or sometimes using the software that came with the camera, since it is designed to do a "complete" copy

  • CS4 GPU Acceleration and Intel X3100

    Hello everyone,
I currently own a laptop which I use heavily for image editing. It is powered by a very fast Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz and a power-efficient yet perfectly capable Intel X3100 integrated graphics chip.
My chip supports all of the necessary Shader versions, OpenGL 2.0, etc. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_X3100 ). However, when I visit the Preferences menu to enable the OpenGL acceleration, I am presented with a grayed-out option telling me I may need to upgrade my drivers or graphics card.
I have tried new driver versions. Certainly I should not have to purchase another card (impossible in a laptop in fact) seeing as my chip supports all of the requisite features.
    Help? Thanks!
    Steve

    Hi Anne,
Let me clarify. I am not aware of any current compatibility issues with Flash (author or player).
The current Intel graphics drivers do not have the OpenGL features that Photoshop looks for to enable OpenGL acceleration. Intel is in the process of developing and testing an updated driver that will support this, hopefully to be released in early 2009.
    However,
b Photoshop CS4 does currently run reliably
on systems with Intel graphics - it's just that the new OpenGL-accelerated features in CS4 are not available.
I have used an Intel GM45 system with a pre-production driver to test the new Photoshop CS4 OpenGL features like smooth-zoom, birds-eye view, and canvas rotate, and they perform smoothly. The OpenGL performance is noticably slower on older GM965 systems, but it is still almost-smooth and better than not having OpenGL enabled at all. (Note that OpenGL 2.0 will
    i not
be supported on GM945 and earlier chipsets.)
It seems you are aware that the choice of a new notebook system does not only depend on the graphics chip's capabilities, but rather how the performance of the whole system suits your needs. For example, I use Premiere Pro to edit HDV and AVCHD video, and this depends much more on the performance of the CPU than on the graphics, so I would want a system with the best CPU, perhaps even at the cost of some graphics performance.
From what I have seen of Photoshop's new OpenGL features, the GM45 chipset is quite capable of giving most users a nice, smooth experience, and even the GM965 is "ok", with just a little jerkiness. An exception may be users that bring fancy, large 3D models into Photoshop - this should work, but I don't have that type of file to test the performance (anybody want to share some?).
To summarize, the Intel graphics systems will work with Photoshop CS4 now, just without OpenGL features. If these OpenGL features are important to you, and you can wait until Feb-March for the new driver (sorry, still no firm promise on the exact date), then I would still recommend an Intel integrated graphics system with a GM965, GM35, or GM45 chipset (GM45 having the best performance).

  • AVCHD editing with CS4 works fine for me

I saw a couple of threads discussing AVCHD with CS4. I was waiting quite a long time for Premiere Pro CS4 - tried some other applications in the meantime with no success - but now I can say it was worth waiting. I have a Quad Core Intel 2,4 GHz, 8 GB RAM, Vista 64, NVIDIA 9600 and editing AVCHD footage (1920x1080 50i, PAL, captured in my Panasonic HDC-HS9 with highest quality level of ~17MBits/s) is really good, although some artifacts (some, not many) are shown in the preview monitor. But editing is really fast, preview-playback within Premiere also. I have to render effects but after rendering, they are also very smooth.
Exporting to BluRay either with MPEG-2-BluRay or H.264-BluRay in AME/Encore results in great picture quality(!), and I mean great quality. No artifacts at all. Watching the video on a FullHD beamer on a large screen is really a pleasure. It took me (or my PC) 6:30 hours to render a 01:05 hours FullHD AVCHD video to MPEG-2-BluRay (max. quality, ~35 MBits/s), with a lot of effect-filters like cross fades etc.
Rendering to H.264 is roughly 3-4 times slower than rendering MPEG-2, but I have only done it for a sample video of 1 minute. The resulting Blu-Ray was also perfect from picture quality point of view (no difference to MPEG-2 except the volume size of the resulting file), but my PC needed much more time to render 1 minute video using H.264-BluRay than it needs for a MPEG-2-BluRay export.

    >> Rendering to H.264 is roughly 3-4 times slower than rendering MPEG-2
...hmmm... this brings me back to the question I just asked elsewhere, which is: How does one properly export AVCHD to H.264 for Blu-Ray without loss of quality? Being as AVCHD *is* H.264, shouldn't the "transcoding" here basically amount to copying the existing data? I'd expect it to be WAYYYYY faster than exporting to MPEG-2 :-/
3-4 times slower than MPEG-2 would basically be a non-starter for me; I have a quad-core box with 4Gb RAM, and it took nearly 8 hours to turn 45 minutes of AVCHD (no effects) into DVD MPEG-2. Source and target were both interlaced. Strangely, exporting the interlaced footage as progressive cut the time by more than half :-? I didn't care for the choppiness of the result, however.
    Cheers,
    Aaron

  • Does LR2 use GPU acceleration?  Other system requirements?

Does LR2 use GPU acceleration as Photoshop CS4 does?
Do you think this machine will run LR2 for some time to come:
Dell Studio with Intel Q9400 quad core; 8GB RAM; 750GB hard disk.
Currently using integrated graphics, but there is a PCI x16 slot available.

    >Does LR2 use GPU acceleration as Photoshop CS4 does?
    No
    >Do you think this machine will run LR2 for some time to come:
Yes that's more than beefy enough. To use that 8 gigs, make sure you run 64-bit windows vista on it.

  • GPU Acceleration for Lightroom

When will Lightroom have GPU acceleration like Photoshop CS4 has?

From what I've read GPU acceleration in CS4 currently only applies to canvas zooming and rotation... not EVERYTHING is accelerated by the GPU. So what effect (if any) would GPU acceleration for have for those items in LR? (honest question... I don't know.)
I've also read Adobe is planning on more features later on in CS to use GPU. So to me this appears currently as a first stage deployment of this technology... not TOO exciting in terms of actual benefit today, but with promising prospects in the future.
As for LR, I assume it all depends on what features would benefit from this (some would actually slow down if routed through GPU, if I understand some the writeup about this.)

  • Keeping the Video Clip Controller Bar in Dreamweaver CS4

    Hello Everyone-
    Here is my question:
I created on quicktime video on iMovie '08. You know the controller bar at the bottom of the video with the pause and forward arrow, etc. Well, it shows up on the quicktime video. However, and here's the problem, when I uploaded the video onto Dreamweaver cs4, the video uploads but NOT the controller bar so there is no way of stopping or playing it on the website. I've searched tons of solutions online but cannot find one that works.
Any info about solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I did a search of these forums for " premiere pro cs4 avchd problems " and got quite a few threads ( posts ) to read ...
apparently cs5 handles avchd better than cs4.  maybe you could provide some basic info about your computer specs and I think Jim Simon knows a LOT about avchd and cs4....now that youve posted what camera you have maybe he can help you out....
typically you would match your sequence settings with the asset you are using...
I think the latest patch to cs4 works better than the version out of the box...
good luck...sorry that I have no experience with avchd or your camera

  • CS3 or CS4 -Import/Edit HD video from memory card Canon Vixia HFS100

Can someone 'jumpstart' or direct me to good tutorial(s) for the following:
Video recording with Canon Vixia HFS 100 camera is full HD 1080, 60i frame rate, AVCHD specs, onto a SDHC card.
I have CS3, getting ready to install upgrade to CS4.  Most project files created are for NSTC standard TV broadcast.
Answer to specific questions appreciated as well as additional information or resources.
What preset is best to use for project files?
Do you have to install the Pixela imagemixer to recognize for video import from the memory card?

Unfortunately, you have posted into the Premiere forum. This is an older series of programs, prior to the introduction of the Premiere Pro line, with PrPro 1.0.
Now, for AVCHD material, CS4.1 offers full native support for this format with most of its variations. One DOES need a beefy computer to process this footage, as it is very heavily CPU-dependent.
I'll bet that Curt, or Jeff, will move your post to the PrPro sub-forum, so look for it there. You will get many more responses in that forum.
    Good luck,
