Acceleration thru GPU in Photoshop CS4 (Intel GMA X4500HD)
Does Intel GMA 4500MHD support GPU acceleration in Adobe Photoshop CS4?
(According to recommendation about OpenGL and Shared Model this GPU should support it, but Intel GPUs are not included in Adobe list of supported GPUs at all and I have found 2 posts on web mentioning it does not). What size of RAM in this case is needed? How it works with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470?
Thank you.

The main reason, why I am going to buy notebook instead PDA, is a need of editing photographs. The most demanding program will be Photoshop (CS4), so good-working GPU accelation would warm the heart of me. Unfortunately this document(*) does not mention Intel GMA X4500HD, which would be cheaper choice. Do you have any experience with this GPU and acceleration thru it in PS? (required RAM size ?). Thank you.

GPU Acceleration Not Supported in PS CS4 Standard
I was led to believe that GPU acceleration features (like smooth zoom and rotate) were supported in the PS CS4 Standard edition. Under GPU Settings, Performance Preferences, it states "No GPU options available with Photoshop Standard". To me this is misleading advertising - I would have considered the Extended version if I had known.
Maybe this will help others not make the same disappointing assumption I have. I think Adobe should make this clear in the future. It really does make me feel slighted.Hi David,
Unfortunately the wording in the performance preference needs rework. There is already a bug logged, but it was found too late for changes to be made.
There is no Photoshop Standard, just Photoshop and Photoshop Extended. It also fails to clearly note the condition. I apologize for the confusion it has caused. Photoshop and Photoshop Extended both support GPU acceleration features for supported cards.
The intention was to communicate that under the current conditions Photoshop can not enable any GL drawing features.
You can find more information on GPU and Photoshop CS4 in this article:

...Photoshop CS4 now includes graphic card acceleration..
Every time I open my Photoshop CS4 I get the following pop-up:
When I load an image file I get this pop-up and my Photoshop closes:
I am running Vista and have had CS4 since it first came out, and never encountered any problems.I have a NVIDIA GeForce 7100 that is up to date, and GPU acceleration is enabled in my Photoshop.
If anybody can suggest what might be going on and how I could fix that, I would greatly appreciate it!I'd start by resetting the photoshop cs4 preferences:
Press and hold the Shift+Ctrl+Alt keys just after starting the launch of photoshop cs4.
Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to Delete the adobe photoshop settings file.
Press Yes because you do.
In that dialog about graphics card acceleration, you can check Don't Show Again
If resetting the preferences doesn't solve the issue, try turning off Enable Open GL Drawing and restarting photoshop cs4
If that works, then most likely something has gone awry with your graphics card driver.
(you might have to reinstall the graphics card driver)
Double check the Nvidia website to be sure you have the latest graphics card driver updates

Photoshop CS4 - GPU support on standard ?
Does Photoshop CS4 standard benefit from the GPU support , OpenGL 2.0 ?
Not sure about the 8800 but my 8600GT with 512MB and the latest driver released by NVidia this month works really well. I found I need to leave the Harware Acceleration slider all the way to the right. Any setting less than the max caused some visual artifacts and double images to appear.

Photoshop CS4 on Intel Mac requires Rosetta to open. Why?
Hello,
I fresh installed 10.6.2 after upgrading my hard drive. I fresh installed Photoshop CS4. Installed all updates. When I tried to open Photoshop CS4, I was prompted to download Rosetta. Photoshop would not start. I installed Rosetta and Photoshop still would not start. I am running a Intel Core Duo 2 MacBook Pro with all updates installed. What gives?
EdThanks for your reply;
I erased the hard drive and installed Photoshop from Adobe's Download site. All is well now. My personal install disk may be defective.

Adobe photoshop cs4 graphics card acceleration help!
Need a little help,
everytime i start cs4, it says "adobe photoshop cs4 now includes graphics card acceleration. we recomend you vist your video card manufacturers website and download and install latest drives.
I am running vista 64 bit and a ati radeon hd 4800 series card "4870 to be exact" and under properties it is 8.612.0.0, but when i follow the adobe link and it brings me to the site it has version 9.5?? i clicked update driver and it says its upto date, is this a problem, and why does it show this everytime photoshop starts?
thanksGo to this site and download the 9.9 driver set. The 9.5 driver set had a streaming problem that had to be fixed with a hotfix. I have the 4870 also and the 9.9 drivers are stable and have no issues with PS CS4 on vista 64 bit.
http://www.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDHomePage.aspx
Sometimes it is better not to change drivers if you don't have issues. But the 9.5 set has issues.
Make sure you un-install the old drivers. When you click on the Icon and start the install it will unpack as normal but you will come upon a screen to install or uninstall. Choose uninstall to remove the old driver package. Reboot. Then click on the icon again, it will unpack and you will get the screen again so choose install. Reboot after install.
If I remember correctly the 9.5 drivers, after install, did not show the reboot screen. You still have to reboot.

GPU enhancements message keeps popping up and Photoshop CS4 keeps crashing.
When I start Photoshop, I get the message, "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video adapter manufacturer's website for the latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences."
I have updated everything but this message still pops up everytime I open Photoshop CS4. Not only that, I tried to enable the GPU enhancements via Preferences but my Photoshop keeps crashing every time I try to click or do anything.
Hope someone out there knows whats wrong! Any help is appreciated, thanks!Welcome to the forum.
Just for clarification, did you download and install the video driver from the mfgr's. Web site, such as nVidia, or AMD/ATI?
The reason that I ask that, is because too often, people will let their OS tell them, if they have the latest driver. That info is usually at least 6 mos. out of date - always go to the "source," plug in your card/chip and your OS, and if there is a newer driver, download and install that.
Note: there have been a few threads on problems with newer AMD/ATI drivers, so if you have one of their cards/chips, you might want to check out some of the threads on those.
Good luck,

Can't enable GPU aceleration in Photoshop CS4
I can't enable the GPU aceleration in Photoshop CS4 64bits.
This problem is happening since I installed my new GTX295, but I think this should be compatible with PS CS4
(I'm running the newest Forceware 182.22)
ThanksI already fixed it, disabling the Multi-Gpu option in the Driver options.
Thanks! -
Why does Photoshop CS4 keep crashing?! (Mac OS)
I use Photoshop often, daily even. I upgraded to CS4 at the beginning of this year and have a CONSTANT and very IRRITATING problem. It keeps crashing, for no apparent reason. It will crash during all kinds of "tasks". Saving, opening an image from RAW, using the liquify tool, using the clone tool, running an action and any number of others tasks cause a crash in Photoshop CS4.
I work relatively fast, as I use Photoshop on a daily basis. This is how it will happen...
I'll be working on an image and I "command S" to save. There will be a slight delay of about 2-4 seconds and then Photoshop will crash and I will get a pop-up screen to submit a crash report. I have submitted literally hundreds, if not thousands of these. Then, Photoshop sits idle for a few minutes as if it is locked up, unable to "Relaunch". So, I then usually have to "Force Quit" Photoshop, yet, it will not immediatly quit. It takes another couple of minutes to do so before I am able to begin working again. This process happens, on average, a couple of times per hour, if not more.
Luckily, I have "trained" myself to save after almost ever thing I do. But, I inevitable loose something as it happens just after a "task" or during a "save". (It happens during a save frequently.) Plus, I'm loosing valuable time waiting on it to Relaunch, and figuring out where I'm at on the image all over again.
Needless to say, I'm beyond frustrated, to say the least.
There is something else that doesn't make sense. My business partner, who also has a new IMac (not the VERY newest model that just came out but the one just prior to that...It was purchased in December 08 as well) and also runs CS4 does not have this crashing problem! At all! Not once.
Here's the difference in our systems...He purchased the 24" model, while I purchased the 20". And, this is where I actually think the problem may lie...I am running dual monitors, while he does not.
I've tried to trouble-shoot this problem, since he does not have the problem, while I do. I did "About this Mac" on both our machines to see if there were any obvious differences, besides running dual monitors. What I found under HARDWARD were only two minor differences. His processor speed is 2.8 while mine is 2.66 GHz. and the SMC Version of his machine is 1.3f1, while mine is 1.29f1. There were no differences in the GRAPHICS/DISPLAYS section either, beyond my having a second display.
Both his and my graphics/displays are as follows:
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x9583
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-B2250L-259
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.259
Displays:
iMac:
Resolution: 1280 x 800
Depth: 32-bit Color
Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Supported
Built-In: Yes
Below is the information regarding my second display.
LaCie 324:
Resolution: 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz
Depth: 32-bit Color
Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Supported
Rotation: Supported
Television: Yes
As you can see, my second display is a Lacie 324. It is rather new, I purchased it in November or December 08 as well as my IMac. I have the Lacie set as my main display.
When I have Googled this Photoshop CS4 crash problem, I have come across some mention of the GPU Settings and Enable OpenGL Drawing. I have to admit, I really don't understand this. Should OpenGL Drawing be on or off??? I turned OpenGL Drawing off some time ago because I had a problem with calibrating my Lacie monitor. My monitor was showing images skewed toward red, while my prints were coming out with less red. I Googled this problem (at the time I didn't think this was related to the crashing issue) and someone said they were having trouble calibrating their monitor as well and managed to "fix" that by turning "Enable OpenGL Drawing" off. I did that and it did indeed fix the problem with getting my Lacie monitor calibrated. FYI, my business partner also turned off the Enable OpenGL Drawing feature and...again...he has NOT had the problem with Photoshop CS4 crashing. So, since he is not having the problem and I am, I would assume the "Enable OpenGL Drawing" issue that is mentioned on this site, is not the crashing problem, though I could be wrong.
So, I go back to having a second monitor as being the most-likely candidate for causing the Photoshop crashes. I am wondering if the Lacie display is "drawing" the graphics at the speed that differs, or is incompatable, with Photoshop CS4??? This is just a guess from someone who is not all that technically savy. But, again, I'm not sure. I have also looked on the Lacie website for any updates for the Lacie 324. There are none, as far as I can tell.
I am curious if others with and without dual monitors are having these crashes. If so, have you found any resolution? I'm desperate for help so if anyone can shed any light on this issue, it would be most appreciated.
Below, I will put some specs about my machine, in case that is helpful.
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00
SMC Version: 1.29f1
I have the 11.0.1 version of Photoshop CS4.

Photoshop CS4 - How to install both 64 and 32 bit versions on XP 64
Hello-
When I installed Photoshop CS4 along with the other apps on CS4 Web Premium I thought that both versions of PShop would be installed by default, but that was not the case with my installation; only the 64 bit version was installed.
Now I would like to install the 32 bit version but when I try to do it through setup I am unable to check the box. There is a list of "Installed Products" and then "Available Products"; the only thing under "Available Products" is Photoshop CS4, but I am unable to check the box.
Any ideas on how I can install the 32-bit version? I want it for the GPU acceleration and to use certain plugins.
Thanks,
Paula)re: built for XP64 - note that I said "gave the [erroneous] impression," meaning that someone could plausibly infer that PSCS4 64 will not run reliably on XP 64, which is categorically untrue. I am NOT saying that there are not people who have had problems and will continue having problems with PS CS4 on XP 64.* However, I am personally attesting - having worked with PS CS on my XP 64 system a lot since buying it this week, including continuously since I reinstalled last night ( I tend to work at night) - that PS CS4 runs gloriously on XP 64, INCLUDING the OpenGL stuff once you patch the reg via the link I posted (which, by the way, would have been a valid answer to my question).
On that note, telling me stuff that I already know is NOT a valid answer. Further, as we have seen, my running this on XP 64, as opposed to Vista, was irrelevant, if only (but not really only) because that is not the system to which my question referred. How did telling me about Vista help? If you don't know what to do with XP 64, then you don't know....I didn't know either, at least when I posed my question. Your reference to Vista was POINTLESS.
b) re: installing to non-default directory. I have been doing this for so long that I can't remember not doing it, and I have never, ever had a problem like this, and I do have other dual-bit depth apps. This should be a non-issue. If I thought it was relevant I would have mentioned it, but in light of what I just said, it did not seem to be a factor. Crikey- CS3 is in that same directory! Why would Adobe's installer get confused? They are the same structures, i.e. %disk%:\Program Files, %disk%:\Program Files (x86). If you knew things that might cause my problem - you didn't-you might have asked about my install.... Instead, you told me what anyone who had read my question would already know that I knew, namely that there would be two different locations for the two different versions. Incidentally, and here's good intel here, when you do get them both installed, you get BOTH versions listed in your Adobe CS4 whatever edition programs folder. Right there! So, if you had known what you were on about, you would have realized that there was NO WAY that PS 32 was mysteriously hiding somewhere. This is another clue that you knew nothing about the subject you were purportedly answering!
So why, why, why am I picking on you? Because there was a time when you could post a simple question on the internets and some helpful soul would take the time to actually read and consider the question before giving an answer that, even if not ultimately fruitful, was at least in the freaking ballpark. But those days are gone** and even though I know that and I expect nothing, I posted anyway, and along came you, with two heaping helpings of SQUAT in terms of useful advice. What the hey? Are you that bored that you just dole out crappy advice? Watch more TV or something!
Jeez!
Thanks,
Paul
*My relevant system specs are as follows, for those who may want to give XP 64 a shot: and/or are having problems:
XP 64 SP2 ( there is no SP3 for 64 and parenthetically I will note that CS4 on XP 32 SP2 runs fine even though you get a warning on install that it is supposed to have SP3 installed)
8 GB RAM
AMD 64X2 5600 on AMD/ATI 780G Chipset with dual integrated ATI 3200 Graphic plus an extra ATI 3400 card running three different monitors (2 on the 3200 and one on the 3400). On my setup PS likes to enable and actually work with the OpenGL stuff when I launch either/or the 64 or 32 bit version on the monitor that is attached to the 3400 card. After that I can drag the app anywhere I want and it works.
** in July, as myself and my girlfriend were getting ready for our vacation, we posted on a location-specific travel group to ask if people knew if the hotel we were staying at had a safe for our laptop. We got like thirteen responses, all more or less to the effect that we should leave the laptop at home when we go on vacation. Not ONE answer about the hotel! WTF??? -
Photoshop CS4 will not refresh or update view
Hello,
My Photoshop CS4 will not update / refresh the viewport after any change to the layers or settings. The view will only refresh if the view is changed, such as the hand or zoom tool. This makes Photoshop nearly usesless. Did some looking around the net and have seen a few responses to situations similar to this but none of them are regarding a Mac. This is my work computer so you can understand my frustration.

Any ideas on how I can solve this would be greatly appreciated, I need to use PS on a daily basis here and this is killing me to be unable to use it.

Photoshop CS4 and CC/CS6 crashing for no apparent reason (Windows 7)
I’m currently having a serious problem with my Photoshop CS4 where it continuously crashes, for no apparent reason, since July 16, 2013. I have done everything recommended via Adobe forum to try and fix this problem though it still persists. It crashes randomly and I am usually unable to use Photoshop for more than 20 minutes. Below is the error message that appeared when Photoshop crashed,

Since this incident, I thought that perhaps updating my Photoshop to the current version i.e. Photoshop CC would fix the problem. However, after downloading and using the trial version of the current Photoshop CC, the same exact problem keeps happening. This is the error message that appears when Photoshop CC crashes,

Photoshop CS4 - new report, old problems
Hi there,
although i have posted many of the following problems in another thread, i will recall them here, because the other thread has gone slightly off-topic.
I have been "using" Photoshop CS4 that came as part of my Production Suite Premium Package for as long as it is out now and i have to say, that for me it is the worst release ever.
I work with Photoshop since Version 3 and every new release has had it's flaws that were fixed after a while. So i really hope this might also be the case with CS4.
So here are my System Specs again:
Intel Dualcore E8600
NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GX2 (Driver: 180.48)
MSI P35 Neo-2 Motherboard (Bios: 1.90)
3 GB RAM
Wacom Intuos 3 A4 (Driver: pro610-5)
Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
The System is brandnew, the Windows-Installation is fresh, before the CS4 Suite there has not been another Adobe-Program on the machine.
While I am quiet happy with the other programs (Illustrator, Flash, After Effects..even Bridge is starting to become useful), Photoshop CS4 shows several glitches and problems on my system. These are:
- If activated, the GPU-OpenGL setting deactivates randomly. There's no obvious reason for this, just in the middle of work, the rotate canvas-tool is no longer available, zooming is no longer smooth. While the box in the preferences is still checked for OpenGL and my graphics-card is recognized correctly, OpenGL features just stop working. After I close and restart Photoshop everything is normal again, until the next time settings are deactivated.
I am so far not able to trace the reason for this behavior, seems to happen quiet random.
- No "marching ants". In the same matter, the "marching ants" of selections sometimes disappear. While this is not a big problem I think i should note it here for reasons of being accurate.
- Brush tool stops working. I have this quiet a lot. While I paint, the Brush suddenly stops working completely. It produces neither strokes nor blotches anymore. In some cases hefty drawing can result in some strange straight lines but the brush tool can only be revived by restarting Photoshop.
- Crashes. I truly honestly haven't had a crash with CS2 and CS3 ONCE. With CS4 crashes seem to be quiet normal at this point. The application simply freezes, mostly while using the transformation tool. Killing it via the windows task manager is the only option.
- Slow redraw. All the above mentioned problems did occur with OpenGL enabled AND disabled. It really makes no difference. So deactivating this new thing doesn't convert Photoshop back into something useful, but into a slower version of CS3. Redraw of images is considerably slower on CS4 without OpenGL, than it was on CS3, although it gets better after some time working with it. Moving a maximized Image around feels very strange, because the build up of the tiles is somehow slow and sluggish.
- Features I used are no longer there or no longer functional. I use Layer-Comps a lot. With activated OpenGL the Script "Layer Comps to Files" does not work. It produces an error-message that reads:
Error 1: Unable to create Window - OS error (1400) Line: 234 -> dlgMain = new Window("dialog", strTitle);
With OpenGL deactivated it suddenly works... no idea why.
In addition some features like the automatic web gallery creation have been removed from Photoshop, but i figured out how to get them back.
While these are the really bad things about the new version (on my system that is, I heard from Mac-Users who are quiet happy with PS CS4 and keep telling me how fast it is on a Mac.....) there are other things, that i don't understand. I reckon, Photoshop cs4 is first of all a Mac-product and the PC-Version is somehow adapted or converted.
Proof of this for me is the new window behavior. Windows steeling focus and blocking sight on palettes is new for a long time PC-User like me. I also don't understand, why maximizing an image does fill the complete screen thus exterminatinWhile I can not help remedy your problems, Pickman, I can tell you I have mostly the same problems as you. I am not the only one either. I hear this from my students. Marching ants disappearing is normal now, palettes hiding behind windows seems common nowadays. Photoshop losing focus, a document suddenly refusing to be the front one and having to minimize the other document(s) to have it back, lasso tool suddenly not showing it's tracing mark, it's all horrible. The error 'unable to create window' is very common.
I didn't even mention the fact that it's no longer possible to downsize the Photoshop window by it's top edge, which is utterly annoying when you have multiple windows open as I often have or the fact that when I scale the main Photoshop window, the documents stay in place and that the tooltips often don't work which is confusing for the novices that I train. I thought they had remedied that in CS3, but it's back in CS4. I have been using Photoshop since version 3 (briefly) then 4, 5 et cetera. This is one of the worst releases ever.

Right click - add to iTunes library?
Is there anything out there that would allow me to just right click on a music folder, and send it to the iTunes library, without having to open iTunes? If not, this would be a great, and (for me), welcome feature in a future version. Thanks.
