Accent marks on a US keyboard

Hi everyone
I've just bought a new MacBook. I ordered it with a US keyboard, because i'm a software developer, and an US layout is the best thing for me. It will be delivered to me in 3 or 4 days
I was wondering if i can write letters with accent marks (like à,ò,è,ì), even with the new computer...
Do you know some ways to solve this issue?
Thx

Go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Input Sources and check "Keyboard and Character Viewer". Then, when you select "Show Keyboard Viewer" from the menu bar, you will be able to see all characters that you can type. You can select "Show Character Viewer" for the other 60,000 characters you can't type.
For the diacritical marks, use the option key:
cédille ⌥ c
accent grave ⌥ `
accent aigu ⌥ e
umlaut ⌥ u
circonflexe ⌥ i
tilde ⌥ n

  • I cannot type accent marks in firefox 4

    Firefox 4, Mac OX 10.6.7
I Firefox 3 I could type an accent mark using the US keyboard by
pressing the option key. For example to type é, I would type option e followed by e.
Now in Firefox 4,the only way to type the accent marks is to use the French keyboard. Is there a fix for this or is this a bug in Firefox 4?

Such a composition of characters is usually handled by the OS and Firefox shouldn't have effect on it.

  • IOS 8 lockscreen keyboard does not let me input characters with accent marks. My password has an accent mark. I can't restore the device without unlocking it and turning off find my iPod. What can I even do here?

I do have a third party keyboard installed (fleksy), and I removed english and emoji from the keyboards list in settings before rebooting the ipod. When it booted up, it asked for my device password with the default keyboard, but I can't type any letters with accent marks, so I can't enter the password. I figured I could fix this by restoring a backup and changing my password, but I can't restore a backup without turning off Find My iPod - which of course requires me to unlock the device with the device password, which I can't do. Am I stuck here? Is there anything at all that I can do?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • I need a Vietnamese keyboard. Recommendations? A keyboard that officially works with iPad and displays all the characters and their accent marks for typing.

Where do I find an excellent and reliable Vietnamese keyboard for new iPad? A keyboard that displays all the characters and the accent marks so typing can be easily accomplished. The iPad keyboard selection for Vietnamese really only seems to change the Return key to the Vietnamese language. iPad is sold all over the world....my interest is Viet Nam.....the full keyboard.

Thanks.....my Vietnamese expert spouse says this tip will work just fine.  I was not aware of the hold down function. Slow typing but accomplishes the objective native on the iPad.
You are correct.....most Apps that I find seem to be based only on a copy/paste method of input.
    You solved the problem.

  • How to make keyboard do accent marks???

Ok. So I just got the Mavericks update. And now when I hold down a letter (in order to add an accent mark to it), it won't work anymore. Does anyone know how to fix this!?!? Because Apple sure doesn't. Please help

I have not moved to Mavericks, all my accents work as before using the option key, so if it has changed, try posting this in the Mavericks or I guess it is this one
    http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/
All the things I have done in the past, previous to Mavericks have worked as normal with the option key and a mod key.
Like I mentioned before I do not as of yet have Mavericks. so I can not advise you in any certainty.
If none of the "normal" option keys work for you, you may want to contact Apple and let them know????

  • French accent marks in Pages

I'm having trouble inserting French accent marks into my text. I've gone through
the Help list but there does not appear to be an OPTION on my screen. Is there a simple
    way of doing this?

If you are using the US keyboard layout, you do this via Option dead keys. E.g. é is Option/alt + e, release Option key, then e.
    Here is a list:

  • No accent marks on the new safari

I am using the european portuguese on my iMac, and now I cannot add accent marks to characters in safari. I have the keyboard Viewer on, but nothing happens?! I just need to put and accent on a "E"... Any help? Thanks!

You can disable it and see if the old option key method works.
    1. Open Terminal.
    2.  Terminal command copy and paste:
defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false
    3. Log out of your account for the change to take affect.
If you want this functionality back,  execute the following Terminal & log out.
defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

  • Multiple accent marks per character

Is there a way to add more than one accent mark on each character in OS X? I'm creating flash cards in Mental Case and I'm using the accent menu but I can't figure out a way of combining accent marks. For instance one of the words I'm trying to do this for is "cogitare" in Wheelock's book there is an emphasis line over the first ō and another over the á along with an accent mark from from bottom left to top right. From the accent menu you get when holding down a vowl they are 7 and 2 respectively.
    Thanks!

You can't do that using the popup menus of the character picker.  Instead you should activate the US Extended keyboard layout in system prefs/keyboard/input sources.
Once that is done and you have selected US Extended in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen, you can type the long vowel mark by doing option + a, then the vowel.  Then add the acute accent by doing option + shift + e.
    cōgitā́re
Some fonts may not do this well.  Lucida Grande should be good.

  • Foreign accents marks in texts of slide show

I use Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Premiere Elements 2.0  to create slide shows of my pictures taken during my many travels. How can I use accents marks in my texts in French, Spanish, Italian, etc.? I have looked everywhere in all the user guides, but to no avail. An accent mark, or lack of one, can change the meaning of a word, and as a former language teacher I can't afford to look stupid!  Help!

You don't say which OS you have.
If you are on Windows, use the character map applet. For Vista, just start typing character map into the search bar quickly find the program. On XP, it's listed under Programs<Accessories<System Tools. See this:
    http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/accents/charmap.html
In PSE, you can get it in two ways.
    Method 1:
Type your text without the special character. Go to character map click on the character(s); press select button; then press copy button to copy the desired character(s). In PSE,  highlight the letter(s) of text to be changed; right click and select paste. Click the checkmark in the options bar or press the enter key on the numeric keyboard to accept.
If you were just going to do one symbol like a copywrite, click in the document with the text tool; then right click paste.
    Method 2:
Highlight the letter and use the keystroke combo...press and hold alt then while holding in the alt key punch in the digit code at the bottom of the character dialog box. You need to use the numeric keyboard to key in the code. After the code is typed, release alt key then click the checkmark in the options bar or press enter key on numeric keyboard to accept.
Note: Not every font has every character so you'll want to investigate which fonts have the full character set you need.
Found this for if you're on a mac:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=336704
    and this...

Note: Drag and Drop from character map doesn't work with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

  • "Special Characters" Accent Marks delete letter

    Hello fellow Pages users,
I can't quite figure out how to solve a little problem I'm experiencing in Pages. In a text document, I am trying to put an accent mark over a letter (like the diacritical marks one finds over letters in dictionaries to help with pronunciation). I highlight the letter I want to accent, and then I select "Special Characters" from the Edit menu. In the "Character Palette," I select the accent mark I want to use (which is listed under "Punctuation"). But when I select "Insert," the accent mark replaces the letter I want to accent! All I have left is an accent mark on the document, which is useless without the letter it is supposed to accent!
I was wondering whether anyone has encountered this problem (if it is a problem--maybe I'm just going about this the wrong way) and whether there is a workaround. Thank you very much for your time; please let me know if I need to clarify anything.
    Kind regards,
    Chris
P.S. I could just use Microsoft Word, but (1) since my computer is fairly new, I don't have Word at the moment and (2) I would like to learn how to do this in Pages, if it is possible. Please forgive me if this topic has already been covered; I tried to "search" for this topic, but had trouble isolating this specific problem in the Discussions.

    Hello Starfighter
The characters you are selecting from the Punctuation section of the Character Pallette are separate characters - they don't overlay other characters. What you need to do is select a Latin font and pick your character with the accent from there.
It might be simpler for you to use the keyboard viewer instead. When you hold down the ⌥ key you will notice that several of the keys on the keyboard appear orange. This is because they are designed to work in combination with another keystroke to input an accented character e.g. The sequence ⌥ u e will produce the character ë.
    I hope that helps.

  • Acute accent marks on the Blackberry Bold?

Hi, does anyone know how to make acute accent marks on the Bold? I know that if you hold down a letter and roll the clickwheel you can get different characters but for every letter (except the "e" ) it only has the grave accents and not the acute accents. That is, I can get the following: à è ì ò ù but I cannot get á í ó ú (although the é does show up).
You might think this is unimportant but in Spanish we only use the acute (´) accent marks and not the other kind and it would look very unprofessional of me to write an email with the wrong kind of accent or without accents at all.
There should be a way to find it because the spellcheck has options for words with the correct accent marks. I can't use the spellcheck always though because sometimes a word will have 2 different meanings, one with an accent and one without an accent but they are both correct.
Please help I am so lost!

Are you noticing this in emails AND in SMS, or simply in SMS?
When I write an email, I have no problems writing the acute accent on the "i" in "Ana-María" when I roll the ball while holding down the "i".
However, my Options->SMS Text->Data Coding setting is "7 bit", as per my provider, Rogers. At that point, the acute accent is NOT available on the "i", but is still available on the "e". The acute accent on the "i" becomes available to me in SMS Text if I set the Data Coding to "UCS2".
I hope that this was of assistance to you, and don't hesitate to click on "Kudos" if this answer satisfies you.

  • Accent marks not appearing in pdfs

I am in the process of generating Variable Data pdf for an HP Indigo digital press.
We are having issues with the German and Spanish language versions because accents, umlauts,
and other accent marks are not appearing. Instead we get a placeholder character.
I have checked to insure the fonts are not corrupt and have an ASCII code for the characters in question.
Any suggestions as to how to correct this issue?

Type the dead letter and the vowel:
eg umlat is option u then the vowel = äëïöü
option i then the vowel = âêîôû
option e then the vowel i = áéíóú
option ` (above the tab key) then the vowel = àèìòù
option n then the letter = ñãõ
They are characters usually associated with the accent and have been standard on the Mac for decades.

  • Accent marks in Spanish--diacritics--not displaying correctly

When I open documents I have created in Spanish, or Spanish language words that appear in largely English language documents, the diacritical marks (accepts, umlats, etc.) all appear with odd symbols, sometimes two or three, like capital letters, etc. instead of the accent mark in a word, such as Simón Bolívar.

With which encoding as those pages saved and with which encoding are you opening them?
Sounds that they were saved as Unicode and opened as a Western encoding.

  • Trouble with characters with accent marks

    Hi,
I have an Indesign document of Quebec.  Many town names have characters with accent marks on them but when i create my PDF they show up as a small black box instead.  Is there any way of fixing this, other than converting my type to paths?
I'm on a Mac using Indesign v3 and Acrobat v7
    Thanks

OK i already had the Apr 2005 patch installed
    i went to:
    Indesign preferences

Font downloading and imbedding- Always subset fonts with glyph counts greater than 2000
    Is this the right place?
I changed the number from 2000 to 200, (i also did it set at 20)  but all that did was cause even more type to display as black boxes
I also went into my ID print settings and in the graphics tab i changed the fonts menu from "Complete" to "subset" and unchecked "download PPD fonts"
I also tried printing stright to PDF instead of postscripting and distilling
None of it changed anything or had any effect.
Since changing fonts in Freehand had an effect, could it be a corrupted font file?
No, no. Don't reduce the number in the prefs, and You DO want complete and download PPD fonts checked.
DId you try resaving with the same fonts in Freehand and making sure you chose to embed them? I was never a Freehand user, so I don't really know what options are available.

  • Accent marks in hyperlinks?

I have a url with an accent mark (é) that works when put into a browser but doesn't work when put as a hyperlink in InDesign. Does InDesign just not handle url's with accent marks using hyperlinks? Is there a work around other than changing the url?
    Thanks!

I found a solution. You replace the é with the URL-encoding. They can be found here: http://w3schools.com/tags/ref_urlencode.asp
