Accented letters

I was recently in my company UK office and I was trying to show the designer how to use the keyboard shortcut for accented characters. But when I held down the "E" key, for example, there was no pop-up window that showed the different selections. Is there a diffenent function on the UK keyboard. They were running the latest version of Lion.

US and British keyboards are different, go to System Prefs>Character viewer or Keyboard Preferences and adjust things as you need to.

  • E65-How to disable diacritic/accented letters when...

    Hi,
I've got Nokia E65, the phone language and writing language are English.
When I try to write a messageand press the key 6
    it produces the following sequence:
    mno6öøòóôõñ (accented o and n letters)
It does the same for other keys as well.
Is there a way I can disable the accented letters so they would not appear when typing messages?
I've tried to search for a solution but couldn't find any leads.

John, perhaps it works in CS5 but not in CS3.
Peter, the problem is not in the replacement word or looping through that array backwards or forwards. The problem is finding a word with an accented character using the GREP mode.
In using the Find/Replace dialog I cannot find André. Nor Andr\x{00E9}, using Unicode. So if the dialog won't work it appears a script won't work. If I use "Andre" in the Search field it will find "Andre" and "André."
However I did find that if I change the GREP function in the script to the text mode I can find only words with accented characters and then replace them to my heart's content.

  • Serious bug when handling accented letters in language names

    Hello,
While porting my linguistic plugin to CS5, I found a rather serious problem in the Windows version of CS5 (the Macintosh version works all right with the same code). Language names containing any accented letters (anything beyond the basic ASCII range, so even a non-Unicode-only one between 128 and 255) are treated completely wrong. ID doesn't recognise a document created in a previous ID version as having the same language (comparing the language names seems to be corrupt). ID doesn't allow the actual language to be re-selected manually in the Character or Paragraph Styles Edit dialog, it will revert to the erroneously parenthesized version of the same language.
The final proof that points to an ID bug rather than something in my own code is that the language name corruption can be clearly seen when two documents are created with the same language both on Macintosh and Windows. By looking into the .indd file with a hex editor, the Mac version stores the language name correctly, including the accented letters, the Windows version stores it up to the first accented letter, and replaces the rest with garbage.
Is there any way to get in touch with an ID developer responsible for this area to verify this problem and to determine whether it could be worked around somehow?
    Bye,
      Gábor

Ah, solved... It was user error. The files in question were missing from the disk in iTunes library, so of course they were missing on my Apple TV too.
What happened. I have two laptops, and iTunes libraries on them got a bit out of sync over time. So I consolidated them on one laptop and made backup copy (probably using ssh/scp and/or tar) to my Linux box. Then I wiped out the iTunes library on my second laptop, and copied entire content of iTunes directory over SMB. Well, guess what, any file that had accented letters in the file name was not copied over (not sure if this is limitation of SMB as a protocol, Samba server on Linux side, or Samba client on Mac OS X side). The iTunes database on second laptop (to which Apple TV was syncing) now contained references to the files that were no longer present on the disc. When syncing to the Apple TV, iTunes would notice there are songs referenced in the database that were not present on Apple TV, try to copy them and fail (since the referenced files did not exist) over and over again.
I've just located all missing files, spc-ed them over where they should be inside iTunes library, and all is working fine now.
I wish there was a way to have automatic two-way sync between iTunes libraries on my desktops/laptops, instead of having to move files around manually...

  • IChat, ICQ and non-unicode ICQ clients (cyrillic=latin accented letters)

I would like to use iChat to connect to my ICQ account
If somebody with an older ICQ client sends me cyrillic I get garbage (latin accented letters).
If they're using newer ICQ clients I'm getting the message in correct cyrillic.
This imho has something to do with using non-unicode encoding for the messages.
In other ICQ clients (e.g. Adium) I've used there was a setting specifying the encoding to use when there's no explicit encoding. Setting this to windows-1251 was solving the problem for me.
But I see no similar setting for iChat.
Can this be handled somehow ? Is there some preference somewhere ?

    Tom Gewecke wrote:

PS There is one thing you could try, namely setting the font used by iChat to one encoded as Win-1251. You can get some here, for example:
    http://web.ku.edu/~herron/fonts/download_fonts.html
Whether having these on your system will mess up anything else I don't know.
This didn't worked unfortunately. I'm still getting the text as accented latin letters. Apparently the network layer of iChat is translating them to unicode somehow.
And no : having these fonts installed haven't affected anything else on my system from what I can tell.

Therefore, you'll have to define your own character class or use defined classes for Unicode blocks.
    For example:text.matches("[\\p{InBasicLatin}\\p{InLatin-1Supplement}]+")

  • [CS3 JS] How to search for accented letters with GREP

    Hello,
In the following script I have two words, each that has an accented letter. It appears that neither in the script nor in the Find and Replace dialog that GREP will recognize words with accents. It will replace accented characters however. I can do a search for words with no accents but that will lead to trouble when I only want to change the word if it has an accent.
    Any advice would be great!

  • How to convert PDF with accented letters that are not Unicode?

    Hello all,
I have a PDF letter that is written in Spanish. When I copy and paste the Spanish word: organización
... it is pasted to Noepad or Word as:

The word displays properly in the PDF, however I believe it was created originally as a combination of characters and NOT as a unicode character.
Is there some way I can export this to create the proper accented characters?  Is there some specialized converter for this?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

  • Accents over French/Spanish letters InDesign

I have a French document with lots of accented letters. I was trying to type those letters with accents on them, but I was unable to. I know how, I've done it in the past. I even looked it up online to get the correct keystrokes for the correct direction and accent. I get the accent and then the letter. InDesign is not allowing me to have the accent over the letter. Is this something that broke in CS5 and just needs to be fixed? Any ideas? I thought maybe this function was removed since now there is the handy Character Viewer at the top of the monitor. It is handy, but not convenient if you have a lot to type.

My whole job revolves around squeezing 40+ languages into InDesign, so I'm likely to reply to any post that is at all related to non-English stuff.
Minion Pro has an acute accent, which is what you get with option-shift-e, but it looks to me like Minion does not have a combining accent, which is what you'd need. Your method did not work for me with Minion Pro, but it does work with Times New Roman. (Note that I'm not not not suggesting that you use TNR in your layout, I just picked it because it's a font that I know everybody has that also contains combining accents.) But if you use your method to type an acute accent on a font that actually has a combining accent, and then select that combined e-plus-combining-acute glyph and change it to Minion Pro, then in the glyphs menu it'll show up as a precomposed e-with-acute.
I handle a vast amount of Vietnamese text, so I run into this kind of issue all the time. You may want to look at this thread if you want to make your own special-character-input scripts, or maybe at this page of this book if you want to memorize all of the special-input key combos so you can specify e-with-acute and a-with-acute and whatever-with-cedilla directly, rather than trying to use combining accents. I think those instructions will work but I once again have to offer my at-work, no-Mac, I-didn't-test disclaimer.

I would like to know how do I install the brazilian keyboard into macbook air, keyboard with accents (Portuguese Language), I tried so many times how to put into it (Macbook Air). So, thanks for now! I'm waiting for it.

After you go to system preferences/keyboard/input sources as suggested by sberman, click on the + button and scroll down to Portuguese and select that.  Over at the right you will see the choices Brazilian, Brazilian abnt, Portuguese.  You might want to add all three to see which you like best.
The "Brazilian" layout is pretty useless.  It is identical to the US layout and the only way to make accents is via the option key shortcuts:  option + n, then o gives you õ.
The Brazilian abnt and Portuguese layouts have dead keys for adding accents over at the right edge of the keyboard.  But these may not match what is printed on your keys.
You may prefer to stay with the US layout.  On that you can get accented letters by just holding down the base letter and selecting what you want from the popup menu that appears.  Or you can use the option key shortcuts.
Another option is the layout called US International PC, which has accent deadkeys on ~, ', etc.
Which ever layout you want to use, you must select it in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen.
To see which key does what for any layout, use the Keyboard Viewer:

  • Some applications don't put accents with non-english keyboard layouts

I'm using a Portuguese keyboard with three different macs running Mac OS Tiger 10.4.8/9. Some applications (like Motion 2 and Swift Publishing 2) don't allow writing some accented characters, like (è) or (ê), that are accessed by Shift+normal key, but they do display correctly other accented letters, for instance (é), witch are accessed directly without the Shift key. This happens only in some applications and with a european keyboard layout (I tried it also with the spanish and french keyboards layouts), but not with other applications (it works all right with Word or iPhoto) and the english keyboards.
Any sugestion as how to solve this? If I create the text in some other application and paste it in Motion it works! But it's a drag.

  • How to type symbols, accents and tilde in LR text fields?

As a photog in an area with a huge Hispanic population, I need to type accent marks, tildes, etc in caption and other text fields. Does LR support this? If not now, when? Would appreciate immediately response since my Cuban client will think I am culturally ignorant to a staggering degree if I get his name wrong -- and remember, without the correct accents or tildes, non-English words are considered egregiously misspelled. many thanks.

How to Use the United States-International Keyboard
Adding the United States-International Keyboard Layout
To add the United States-International keyboard layout, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Under Pick a category, click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options.
    3. Under or pick a Control Panel icon, click Regional and Language Options.
The Regional and Language Options dialog box appears.
    4. On the Languages tab, click Details.
The Text Services and Input Languages dialog box appears.
    5. Under Installed services, click Add.
The Add Input language dialog box appears.
    6. In the Input language list, click the language that you want. For example, English (United States).
NOTE: When you use the United States-International keyboard layout, you should also use an English language setting.
    7. In the Keyboard layout/IME list, click United States-International, and then click OK.
    8. In the Select one of the installed input languages to use when you start your computer list, click Language name - United States-International (where Language name is the language that you selected in step 6), and then click OK.
    9. In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click OK.
Notice that the Language bar appears on the taskbar. When you position the mouse pointer over it, a ToolTip appears that describes the active keyboard layout. For example, United States-International.
    10. Click the Language bar, and then click United States-International on the shortcut menu that appears.
The United States-International keyboard layout is selected.
    Creating Extended Characters
The United States-International keyboard layout assigns new functions to the right ALT key (the ALT key on the right side of the keyboard). Use the right ALT key in combination with other keys to create extended characters.
The following table illustrates characters that you can create by using the combination of the right ALT key plus another key, as well as those that you can create by using the right ALT key plus the SHIFT key plus another key:
Key on United States keyboard Character Made with Right ALT+Key SHIFT+Right ALT+Key
    1 i ¹
    2 ² N/A
    Creating International Characters
When you press the APOSTROPHE (') key, QUOTATION MARK (") key, ACCENT GRAVE (`) key, TILDE (~) key, ACCENT CIRCUMFLEX key, or CARET (^) key, nothing appears on the screen until you press a second key. If you press one of the letters designated as eligible to receive an accent mark, the accented version of the letter appears. If you press the key of a character that is not eligible to receive an accent mark, two separate characters appear.
In other words, when you use the US-International keyboard layout, Windows automatically accents letters that customarily receive an accent but does not automatically accent letters that do not customarily receive an accent.
The following table illustrates the accented characters that you can create:
Press this key Then press this key Resultant character
