Accents over French/Spanish letters InDesign

I have a French document with lots of accented letters. I was trying to type those letters with accents on them, but I was unable to. I know how, I've done it in the past. I even looked it up online to get the correct keystrokes for the correct direction and accent. I get the accent and then the letter. InDesign is not allowing me to have the accent over the letter. Is this something that broke in CS5 and just needs to be fixed? Any ideas? I thought maybe this function was removed since now there is the handy Character Viewer at the top of the monitor. It is handy, but not convenient if you have a lot to type.

My whole job revolves around squeezing 40+ languages into InDesign, so I'm likely to reply to any post that is at all related to non-English stuff.
Minion Pro has an acute accent, which is what you get with option-shift-e, but it looks to me like Minion does not have a combining accent, which is what you'd need. Your method did not work for me with Minion Pro, but it does work with Times New Roman. (Note that I'm not not not suggesting that you use TNR in your layout, I just picked it because it's a font that I know everybody has that also contains combining accents.) But if you use your method to type an acute accent on a font that actually has a combining accent, and then select that combined e-plus-combining-acute glyph and change it to Minion Pro, then in the glyphs menu it'll show up as a precomposed e-with-acute.
I handle a vast amount of Vietnamese text, so I run into this kind of issue all the time. You may want to look at this thread if you want to make your own special-character-input scripts, or maybe at this page of this book if you want to memorize all of the special-input key combos so you can specify e-with-acute and a-with-acute and whatever-with-cedilla directly, rather than trying to use combining accents. I think those instructions will work but I once again have to offer my at-work, no-Mac, I-didn't-test disclaimer.

  • Mail with French / Spanish accented characters appear as Question marks

    Hi
    I am facing issues in mails that have French / Spanish accented characters in mail subject.Accented characters appear as Question marks (?) when received in the inbox.Mail subject is read from properties file.
    Please let me know the following
    - Should I have the entries in properties file in Unicode ? For example French accent character is represented as á
    - Should I replace msg.setSubject(subject); to msg.setSubject(subject,"UTF-8");
    Please suggest.
    Below is code snippet :
         Session session = getSession();
                   // create a message
                   Message msg = new MimeMessage(session);
                   // set the from and to address
                   InternetAddress addressFrom = new InternetAddress(from);
                   InternetAddress[] addressTo = new InternetAddress[recipients.length];
                   for (int i = 0; i < recipients.length; i++)
                        addressTo[i] = new InternetAddress(recipients);
                   msg.setFrom(addressFrom);
                   msg.setRecipients(Message.RecipientType.TO, addressTo);
                   msg.setSentDate(new Date());
    *               msg.setSubject(subject);*
                   MimeMultipart mp = new MimeMultipart("related");

    String subject = "\u00C 9tat de l'inscription en ligne";You need 4 hex digits after \u. You only included 3.
    mailSubject = new String(subject.getBytes(), "UTF-8");
    message.setSubject(MimeUtility.encodeText(mailSubject,"UTF-8", "B"), "UTF-8");Remove the above two lines. You're trying to make
    this much too hard. All you need is:
    message.setSubject(subject, "utf-8");
    Should I use ISO8859_1 as Charset or UTF-8 ?I think the characters you're included are
    representable in iso-8859-1 so you can use
    that.
    I am using Outlook express as my mail client. Do we have to decode it ?No.

  • I can no longer search for spanish letters in new download of adobe reader

    I downloaded Adobe Reader X1 and now cannot search for Spanish letters like ñ or vowels with accents on them?  Please advise/help? Thanks.

    No, there's nothing you can do to update the document. This is a strange situation. The only explanation I can think of is that the previous version used some repair mechanism that allowed it to identify those characters, even though they are encoded incorrectly, and that this mechanism was removed from the newer version.
    You can report this issue to Adobe as a bug, if you wish, here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
    But as I said, there's nothing else you can do about it.

    How can I insert an accent over a letter?

    Just hold down and don't release the key that you want to have an accent over. When the choices pop up, press the number on your keyboard that corresponds to the number underneath it:
    For example if you want to write à or ä or æ, hold down 'a' on your keyboard and press 1, 4, or 5 respectively.

  • Serious frustration over constant crashing of InDesign CS6

    Hi everyone
    I am seriously beyond frustrated over constant crashing from InDesign CS6. If InDesign is a person, I would have slammed its face into the wall by now. Just these two days, while working on a 160 pages document, Indesign has crashed more than 20 times and everytime it does, the crash report is too large to post to pastebin.
    Basically, when I reflow text, it crashed. When I tried generating TOC it crashed. While inserting new cross references, I mis-clicked and clicked on "update" instead and it crashed. When I deleted one page, it crashed. When I deleted one textbox, it crashed. I can't seem to stop it from crashing. I'm really really frustrated coz there's no one or place I can take the damn document to so that I can some answers from someone why it crashes soooo frequently. I did another document, which was around the same size, it was fine. No drama. Why this is different?
    Is it because I have a running headers? So everytime I do something, it will update and then crash? Can I stop running headers from updating automatically? Can I set it to update manually?
    I'm soooooooooooooooo over it. I can't seem to figure out the crashing problem. I have turned off Smart Flow thinking that it was what causing it. Still the same thing.
    I'm running OSX Mountain Lion with SF4.
    I'm sure it will crash again. I might have to post a pdf doc of the crash report.
    Any idea will be appreciated

    It could be a font but there's nothing I could do about it because it's a template document. I have to use that font, DIN by the way.
    Yes, there are cross references and some of them were transferred from Word doc when I placed text in. So I went through and removed those coz they were wrong anyway.
    I also added cross references to the running headers like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBgBQJLErCM
    Basically, the style of the document (designed by another designer) had numbering in front of the chapter titles and it's throughout the document so there could be up to 12 running titles. I had a feeling it would be this because this is the only thing I did differently this time around using this file, but it's either this way or create 12 Master Pages.
    Does anyone know how else can I do a running headers with numbering?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi, i have finish my professionnal website, now i just want translate it in several languages french,spanish,portuguese and english, did muse can do that option or did i have to create several pages or create other websites thanks

    Hi, i have finish my professionnal website, now i just want to translate it in several languages french,spanish,portuguese and english, did muse can do that option or did i have to create several pages or create other websites because muse don't have this option now thanks

    Hi there,
    There is no option yet to localize the content in Muse.
    If you would like to publish your site to business catalyst then creating different pages in the same Muse site is recommended.
    Else, you can make a back up of this muse site and and create another site using this site, (save the same site with different name to another location) then open that one and edit text in site in another language, and then do the same for third language and so on.
    Thanks.

  • KEYBOARD making spanish letters

    Can someone please tell me how to make spanish letters  ( specifically the n) with my keyboard. I had added the different language options but do not know how to access and change them when typing.
    Thank you
    Phil

    When using the US keyboard, you can make ñ by typing option/alt + n, then n.
    If you are running 10.7 or higher, you can also just hold down the n key and choose ñ from the popup menu that appears.

  • Saved over a very important indesign file!!

    saved over a very important indesign file that has synced to the creative cloud is there any way i can revert back to a previous version on my cloud?

    You should be able to use the Restore functionality to revert back.
    In a web browser go to the Files page at https://creative.adobe.com/files.
    Find the file and go to it's page by clicking on it.
    In the Activity list to the right of the image you should see earlier versions listed.
    Select the version you want and click the Restore link.
    Confirm the restore by clicking the blue Restore button in the dialog that pops up.

  • Slow typing of letters (InDesign CS4)

    Getting really frustrated here. I am writing a user guide using InDesign CS4. I created an .indb book file and added 5 documents where 4 of them are of approx 2-3MBs each. The main document is on approx 10MB, and the number of pages are 63. That's not a very large document, is it? I am not too eager to share this confidential document, thus I try to explain my problem thoroughly...
    When typing within the main document the letters enters slower than syrup poors. I type, and then I must wait. It takes up to one second each letter! Does not matter if I type from the beginning of the document, or the end of it. Does not InDesign handle large documents, or is it a matter of content. All other functions and panels work as normal.
    The main document consists of text, and screenshots in .png format styled with shaddow and frame. The text is formatted with a set of paragraph rules. In addition I have created a group of objects for textual Notes, consisting of an icon left to the text and then a grey background with frame surrounding the note text. This group has object, character, and paragraph styles attached to it. I cannot believe this is slowing the document down.
    I perform some testing. I save the main document separately outside the .indb file, and then do several tests removing stuff in separate operations. After stuff is removed I try to type some text to see if typing still performs as syrup. Removing all screenshots in one operation, a table in another separate operation, then headers, note styles, and at last reducing content. After each removal operation I test typing from the beginning of the document, same place each time. None of the removals seem to have any effect to the document size. However, when reducing the 63 pages large document down to 45 the typing speeds up like a charm. Reducing to only 55 pages, however, make no difference at all. But why should reducing 10 pages from a 63 pages large document have such great effect? Is 50 pages the size limit for InDesign files? Or what?
    I would be tremendously greatful if somebody could enlighten me in this matter.
    Eva

    I wanted to let you know that your post was very helpful. I have been bashing my head into the wall trying to figure the same problem out. It is clear the problem is InDesign because the other programs I run simultaneously don't have these speed, mouse, or keyboard issues. I've tried not running anything simultaneously and emptying the windows programs running in the background. It has no effect on InDesign. I have gone so far as to have my IT specialist go through the windows OS looking for anything eating up the CPU or causing conflicts. No improvement in InDesign.
    In fact, my InDesign has gotten so slow that I have to click over and over again to select with the mouse. It is actually easier to highlight by keyboard commands than by mouse, even with the keyboard delays. I will do something and the mouse completely disappears until I move it outside the InDesign window. It's as if InDesign is so busy that it can't draw the mouse within the software. But the computer is not busy because the mouse appears if I move it to the desktop (I use two monitors).Yes, I replaced the batteries in my microsoft USB mouse. Yes, I tried a chorded mouse. The computer is 6 months old.
    I've been working with InDesign for 2 years. We upgraded immediately to CS4 between announcement and shipping of the product last year. We publish workbooks for grades k-12. Let's just say that a third of the document is conditional text.
    The file I'm working on right now is a HS math workbook. I have to typeset full-size, algebraic fractions. For this, I set up a text box with a numerator paragraph style and a denomenator paragraph style. The box is then embedded in the main text flow as the fraction. I probably have a thousand of these embedded boxes.Of course, some boxes are not only embedded, but also conditional.
    There are diagrams that accompany/illustrate the problems. They are created within the document and anchored to the problems. Linking to anything outside of the file is not an option. The file must be self-contained.
    The final page count is expected to be about 80 pages, (64 are already typeset). There are four master spreads (8 pages) and I don't think any are related to each other.
    I did the "Save As" which cut my file size from 40 mb to 22.2 mb. Wow, did not expect that. Unfortunately, it didn't help. I tried closing ID and reopening. Still didn't change the speed of the mouse or text.
    I will try to figure out if live preflight is turned on. I don't know since we don't use preflight. Which would be better, turning off smart text flow or closing the pages pane? I'd like to leave the pages pane open, but I will try it closed if you really think that will make much of a difference.
    I will look at anything you can think of. Unfortunately, I cannot upload the file as a whole. I have trimmed it down to two sample pages.
    Thanks,
    Tonea

  • Accent marks in Spanish--diacritics--not displaying correctly

    When I open documents I have created in Spanish, or Spanish language words that appear in largely English language documents, the diacritical marks (accepts, umlats, etc.) all appear with odd symbols, sometimes two or three, like capital letters, etc. instead of the accent mark in a word, such as Simón Bolívar.

    With which encoding as those pages saved and with which encoding are you opening them?
    Sounds that they were saved as Unicode and opened as a Western encoding.

  • Save dialog box in vista types over file name in InDesign

    Ever since I have upgraded to vista at work I have been having this issue.
    When I save from InDesign (and only InDesign), I open the folder I need to save my file in. I begin to type the name of the company folder that this file needs to be saved in (there are hundreds). I am only able to type the first letter of the company before it begins typing over my file name. This has turned out to be a major annoyance for me and my coworkers because we may have 40 or 50 folders that start with "s" so we can only type in "s" and then have to stop and scroll through and read each folder instead of typing in the name of the folder we need and hitting enter. Has anyone else had this issue and know how to correct it, or is it something we have to live with?
    Thanks for your time and help.

  • Exporting to PDF - Missing letters   InDesign CS5

    I'm using CS5 at work.  My boss already had a commercial font, the Helvetica Neue serie.  I'm using that font right now in an InDesign document for our yearly catalogue.
    The InDesign file is perfect, pictures and texts.  But when I translate it to a PDF, letter go missing, 'li' 'ni' 'lo' and sequences of letters like that, all around the catalogue.
    I know there are some threads that talk about missing letters but in previous versions of InDesign.
    Anyone got an idea ?
    I created once of twice PDFs without that problem, so I wonder what is happening ?

    should I change font then ?  it's kindda late, it's uploading with corrections right now to China....
    Well, if what you have works for you, and if it's already on its way, then it's a bit late to change the font or change the way you made the PDF.
    For the future, though, it would be good for you to figure out what went wrong. Now, I don't have a full set of Helvetica (horrors! I work in a nonprofit), so I had to try this with other fonts. I picked Minion Pro at first, actually. I exported all kinds of PDFs, both for print and for interactive, and I couldn't make the ligatures drop. And I viewed it in my browser as well as opened from the desktop, I tried it with generic Times, I tried it in many, many ways. I was not able to reproduce your issue.
    It'll be worth the time spent digging if you can figure this out. Here are my guesses:
    1) You folks are using a plugin or another app or some non-Adobe PDF viewer in your browsers. I remember in the early days of... um... I think it was Preview on the Mac circa 10.3?  it would sometimes mess up display of ligatures in embedded fonts.
    2) Everyone in your organization has the same corrupt version of Helvetica. (A very, very long shot.)
    3) There's a bug in the Interactive PDF export. (Another very, very long shot.)
    4) The font is not actually embedding correctly in the interactive PDF for unknown reasons, and we can't tell.
    Anyhow, if it's a problem with your setup or your working methods, better to find out now rather than later. And if it's a bug, same. I'd start by trying to export interactive PDFs with other fonts that do have ligatures to see if you can narrow it down to "just ligatures" or "just Helvetica."
