Accents

iTunes Producer is reporting an error:
ERROR ITMS-9000: "2013_06_10_ePub_for_KDP.epub: The book asset contains file(s) not listed in the OPF manifest: 2013_06_10_ePub_for_KDP.epub:/OPS/images/1962_05 Lyce?e Franc?aise Brussels 1962 May 5eme Anne?e.png.  All files must be listed in the OPF manifest, or there is no way to confirm that they are intended for distribution. For more information refer to http://idpf.org/epub" at Book (MZItmspBookPackage)
I think this is because there are French accents on the letters replaced by question marks. For example, first should say:
1962 – Lycée Français, Brussels – 5me Anée.
But these are simply characters within the text, they're not "file(s)".
Any idea how to fix this?

Tom,
Thanks for response - marked solved although problem was not characters with accents within text, but file name of image.
Why this was not flagged when ePub exported from Pages is beyond me. It really is an absurdly circuitous route from word-processor to iBook, and the incompatibilities between Pages, iTunes Producer, Book Proofer, iBooks Author, and iTunes Connect are mind-boggling - all the more so given that Apple has enough cash in its float to solve all these issues without so much as blinking. That and their highwayman approach to royalties leaves me feeling very bitter towards a company that once stood for great ethics and aesthetics.

  • Problem with display of accented characters

Since 10.6 installation, in Safari, Firefox and OpenOffice, accents are way up high above the characters they are supposed to go with.
I found this site describing the problem (with screen captures), but no answer to stop this behaviour : http://www.betalogue.com/2009/09/08/snow-leopard-preview/
Do you know any way to fix this ?

Are you talking only about pdf's?
If not, it sounds like it could be a font problem. If you are talking about ordinary text you are typing or viewing in OpenOffice, could you send me a screenshot showing the font being used (tom at bluesky dot org)? Does it happen with the font switched to Lucida Grande?

  • My 'accent pop up' doesn't work in my MacBook Pro with Lion...

I hold a key for a tima and the accent pop up does'nt appear. What should i do to make it appear? I NEED this since i'm brazilian and our words use accent...

What happens if you just use the appropriate dead keys to place accents? For example, pressing option and u, then releasing those keys and entering a vowel, will give you a vowel with an umlaut: ö, ü, ä. Option and e followed by e gives you é. And so on. You can also turn on the keyboard and character viewer so that it appears as a menu option.

  • Accents (does Adobe have something against other languages different than English?)

I am absolutely astonished with this problem. I understand that in the previous versions (up to 1.3) Adobe does not care about millions of persons typing with accents (around 3500 billions of persons, 60% the whole world population) but I cannot understand why Adobe has not solved this problem in the v2. FYI although Lightroom accepts the keywords with accents (by pasting), does not allow type them directly over the keyword field. And this is a nightmare for me, especially when my name is Joaquín, not Joaquin... This is not the first time that I read this claim, why Adobe do not solve this stupid problem that Aperture does not have?
FYI if you type Joaquín, Lightroom type Joaqu´´in. Different right?
    Best,
    Jokin

Hi Sean, "ñ" is working fine. The problem are the accents because to put an accent using Spanish as language you should press two keys. I am working in Windows XP. No otheher application has showed this problem. As soon as I press the accent key, instead of show nothing, waiting for the letter to put the accent, Lightroom is showing "´´", a double accent alone. The paste is working, so Lightroom accepts accents but not to type them at least in my system. This is happening at least in three different computers using Windows XP and Spanish Internation sort as language.
Thomas and Sean, please, try the following. Let's type in the Keyword Tag panel my name Joaquín not Joaquin. So, the "i" is containing the accent "í".
You first has to change the language to Spanish International sort, then type "Joaqu" as usual and the "í" has to be introduced using two steps (this is the only way with the exception for using directly the specific ASCII code for "í"). So, to put "í" you should press the keyword " (it is the keyword which is left to the "enter" keyword) and then press the keyword "i". The results should be "í" but you will see how Lightroom will type "´´i" instead.

  • HTML online editor and accented letter

    Hi all gurus,
please forgive the nooby question, I'm a newbie about Portal and I've searched sdn forum without success for the following task.
Strictly; I have to publish an HTML file in an iview of the Portal.
This task was accomplished quite easily, the problem is the simple text which is in the HTML file.
As requirement, that HTML should be an info page; there are then few users which don't know anything of HTML which should update that info page with relevant news and activities.
The purposed solution is, off course, to use the integrated online HTML editor; here the problem arise as every accented letter in the HTML is shown with strange, ascii characters.
Googling a bit, I found that a correct charset in the HTML file could do the job:
    charset=ISO-8859-1
    as we're using Latin1.
Tried this solution on an HTML file on my desktop, it works. The above solution, however, does not work in Portal; the only solution is to use HTML entity (e.g. &agrave), but this is not so immediate to explain to users which don't usually work with HTML. Furthermore, they should switch to textual editor as the online HTML editor doesn't support explicit entity entries.
I'd rather expect the online HTML editor (which is kinda wysiwyg) has an automatic routine (as in Dreamweaver and most others programs)  to convert an accented letter to the corresponding HTML entity. So I guess the problem is on Portal side (configuration?)
Could anyone help me solving this issue, or find a workaround for that?
    Thanks!

Because it looks at the template the object in the system be it a blog or a page it looks for those styles from what it considers the main CSS for that template. Split them up in any way you run into problems.
Always good to keep one CSS for things for perfomance anyway but it will avoid this and other similar issues you not encounted yet with regard to your issue.

  • How do you use the blue keycap characters to get accents?

My new Flex 2-15 has blue symbols on some of the keys. For example, the key to the right of "L" looks like:
    <pre>
    +-----+
    | :   |
    | ; ~ |
    +-----+
    </pre>
where the colon and semicolon are printed in white, and the tilde is blue. Some of the other keys have other accents and foreign symbols, including acute, grave, umlaut, and guillemets. I've read the user manual and searched online. The user manual says nothing about the blue symbols. Online, all I can find is instructions for using the Alt key, e.g. Alt-0-2-2-4 for à. I've been using the Alt combinations for years, and I have a lot of them memorized, but it slows me down whenever I have to use them. It would be really nice if I could get the same result with two keystrokes instead of five. Has anyone else figured it out? Is there a more complete user manual that tells how to do it?
My OS is Windows 8.1, but this should be a hardware function, usable on any OS.

On most keyboards this can be used in combination with the AltGr key, the right Alt key.

  • How can I turn on the character accent menu when typing?

I recently purchased a new Macbook Air. On my old Macbook pro, I could hold down a key, and the accented character menu would pop up. I'm currently taking a class which requires me to type long papers in other languages, and this was incredibly convenient. On my Macbook Air, I can't seem to get this function to work. I've tried inputting the command into the Terminal app that would enable this function, and it only works for once after inputting the command and then goes back to key repeating. I don't want to turn off the key repeat function, I just want to enable the accented characters menu. Please help me out!

Try going to system preferences/keyboard/input sources and make sure you have another keyboard like French or Spanish on the list in addition to US, and then restart.
If need be you can always make the same characters using option keyboard shortcuts, a chart is at

  • How can I disable the accented characters from popping up on the iPad?

    Hello all,
I work with clients who are unable to talk due to various developmental delays. We use the Proloquo2go app which uses the regular iPad keyboard for communication. Is there a way to disable the accented characters from popping up when typing on the keyboard? This is very distracting for some of our clients. Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Nikki

I don't use an external keyboard but I wonder if you would have any different functionality with one. I'm sorry that I cannot recommend anything but have you thought about that approach?

Every correct iOS 5 install should have the choices French, French (Canada), French (Switzerland) on the list from which you add keyboards.

  • Feature request: Better handling of accents

    Hi everyone,
Since the "Provide iTunes feedback" menu item in iTunes itself only allows you to request music from the iTMS, I'm going to post my feature request for iTunes here, and hope that Apple picks up on it.
For most of the English-speaking world, accented characters (e.g.: é, à, â, ö, etc...) are never used, but for someone like me who speaks French or someone who has international music, it's an important part of using your computer.
So, here are two suggestions on how iTunes could handle accented characters more gracefully:
    1. Don't be so aggressive in the auto-complete behaviour! iTunes will routinely disregard capitalisation and accents in order to "fuzzy-match" the auto-complete.
For instance, suppose I have an artist in my library named "Stephanie McKay", and I want to add another artist named "Stéphane Pompougnac". Here is how the auto-complete would look at six different stages (iTunes' suggestions are in square brakets):
    1. St[ephanie McKay]
    2. Ste[phanie McKay] iTunes replaces the é I just typed with a normal, unaccented e
    3. Stephan[ie McKay]
    4. Stephane iTunes doesn't have any suggestions to make at this point
    5. Stephane Pompougnac I've typed in the complete name, and now I have to return to put the accent on the first e
    6. Stéphane Pompougnac
In this case, the 'é' should've stuck as of step 2 and iTunes should've not had any suggestions to make since nothing else in my library starts with 'Sté'.
    2. As far as searches go, the same is partially true, but with one caveat. If I'm searching for "Stéph", I should only get one result back, "Stéphane Pompougnac".
On the other hand, if I'm searching for "Steph", I think there's a possibility that I was too lazy to type the accent or I didn't know if/where there was an accent, and so I should get both results back: "Stéphane Pompougnac" and "Stephanie McKay".
The same is true of other accented characters (é, à, ö, ô, and even ç). I don't know how languages other than French and Spanish deal with characters that look alike (e.g. ø and o) or that represent the same thing, but if there is a relationship, I suppose the same behaviour should apply there.
    Cheers,
    - tonyboy

    Hi Brad,
Thanks a lot for pointing this out. We have verified this. We are looking into this issue and would try to incorporate the fix in future releases.

    Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,
    Nathan

  • [Solved] Accents on US keyboards

    Hello everyone,
I have already solved this for my laptop, so I post the solution to help someone else.
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron E1505, with English-us keyboard. And my main language is Spanish, so I normally use accents like áéíóú, and ñ.
The solution suggested on the wiki was not helpful for me:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acc … _keyboards
You may consider adding this other solution to the wiki.
I have found that the us xkb layout already has an International variant, with all the accents, so, to enable the accents on a us layout you only have to edit /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi and correct the following two lines as follows:
    <merge key="input.xkb.layout" type="string">us</merge>
    <merge key="input.xkb.variant" type="string">altgr-intl</merge>
    Save, exit, reboot.
To use the accents, just press the right Alt + the key you want
    Example: Alt+e = é
That way you get a lot of special characters (¿µñb®©œæøœïðßáöóíúüþëéåä, etc.)
    That's it.
There's no need to modify xorg.conf or install extra stuff/config files or scripts to modify the default layout.
    With this solution works perfect.
    Updated - June 30, 2010
The HAL solution doesn't work any more with Xorg 1.8, so I solved it by adding the keyboard layout and variant to xorg.conf:
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
    MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us"
    Option "XkbVariant" "intl"
    EndSection
Use "intl" variant to get á wit 'a, or "altgr-intl" to get á with AltGr+a

    Hello all,
    Excuse me for the delay,
For me, the problem with the Xmodmap suggested in the wiki was:
1- XKeyCaps program was buggy (didn't allowed me to select a keyboard)
2- The Example xmodmap file doesn't have the same keycodes of my keyoboard, so the solution was to manually create my own keyboard layout.
If I was going to create my own keyboard layout, I think that the most clear/clean solution is to create a custom layout for HAL. I was going to do that, taking the "us" layout as base, and that's how I found that the us layout already hast the international variant (and there are a few other variants, you can search the one that better fit your needs). The default International variant was good for me, so there was no need to create a new layout
I think that the Xmodmap solution is more like a patch, and it may create some problem or confusion in a future after several system updates...
Maybe some Arch expert can give us a better explanation about both solutions.
    Regards.

Why can I no longer, after having downloaded Lion, write accents and other diacriticals when in the Google, Yahoo, FaceBook, or even here in this post? The new method for getting at the "option" symbols works fine in other places like spotlight, but now even the older "option+letter" doesn't work in most places.

Chrome doesn't support the new accent/diacritics/macron chooser. I'm not sure about other browsers such as Firefox. You can use the old Option+letter combination that Doug suggested. Hopefully updates will solve these little incompatibilities shortly.

  • Is anyone having issues with their iPhone 5 music controls in a 2012 Hyundai Accent, both on Bluetooth and using a headphone or USB cable?  My music plays but I cannot skip songs without physically using the iPhone 5 controls.  Thanks!

    Hello,
I have an AT&T iPhone 5 purchased from an AT&T store - it is a normal phone, no changes, no jailbreaking.  I tried using my phone and my girlfriend’s iPhone 5 with the USB auxiliary cable in my 2012 Hyundai Accent.  No matter what connector I use (headphone, USB, auxiliary) it doesn't charge or allow me to use the Hyundai’s controls to change music.  Music will play through the Bluetooth system, but I cannot control the music unless I physically touch my iPhone.  My iPhone 4 has a USB auxiliary cable and works perfectly; it charges and I have full control of my music without having to touch my phone. Nothing works even if I use the adapter that connects the iPhone 4 charger end to the iPhone 5. The picture below shows the iPhone 4 USB cable but it needs to have the (blue) iPhone 5 adapter.
Here’s the best part of this whole situation.  I was told by Hyundai Customer Care that there is a specific USB cable available for my iPhone and that I need to contact a dealer.  However, two Hyundai dealerships have told me that they do not have a cable, that Apple has not made a cable for the iPhone 5, and that I need to contact Apple directly or order it from an Apple store.  It gets better.  I contacted an Apple Store and they told me to contact Hyundai.  I explained what I wrote above and they put on a call with Apple Customer Care.  After 37 minutes on the phone with Apple, they still couldn't give me a satisfactory answer on how to get this cable or if they even had a cable (Case ID 505467409).
So here is the magical question:   Is there a working adapter for the iPhone 5 that connect to a 2012 Hyundai Accent? It needs to play music, charge the phone, and work with the car’s controls.  Thanks!
    -sam

The problem is that you're using an uncertified lightning to 30-pin connector (the blue cable).  If you purchase the 30-pin to lightning cable (either online, at an Apple store or an authorized dealer) it should work fine.
I have a 2011 Tuscon and tried the lightning to USB cable that came with the phone - no dice.  Talked to my local Hyundai dealer and they don't have an eta on the Hyundai lightning cables (I'm sure it's in the works).
    Lightning to 30-Pin Adapter (0.2M)
    Part Number: MD824ZM/A
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter?fnode=48
$29 in the US store, $45 in Canada (yes, even though our dollar has been par for years)

  • How to load CSV with accented characters?

    Hi,
I have a database instance with NLS_CHARACTERSET = 'AL32UTF'. I upload a csv file with APEX into WW_FLOW_FILES table and then parse it with dbms_lob.instr. The problem that I am facing is that if I save the CSV file in UTF8, then this works fine, if I save it in any other encoding then it's displaying 'funny' characters when I try to parse it and display the parsing result and the source data contains some accented characters, like, á, é, ő etc,
I am not sure if this is an APEX issue or I rather be turning to NLS forum. TIA.

I would like to know how do I install the brazilian keyboard into macbook air, keyboard with accents (Portuguese Language), I tried so many times how to put into it (Macbook Air). So, thanks for now! I'm waiting for it.

After you go to system preferences/keyboard/input sources as suggested by sberman, click on the + button and scroll down to Portuguese and select that.  Over at the right you will see the choices Brazilian, Brazilian abnt, Portuguese.  You might want to add all three to see which you like best.
The "Brazilian" layout is pretty useless.  It is identical to the US layout and the only way to make accents is via the option key shortcuts:  option + n, then o gives you õ.
The Brazilian abnt and Portuguese layouts have dead keys for adding accents over at the right edge of the keyboard.  But these may not match what is printed on your keys.
You may prefer to stay with the US layout.  On that you can get accented letters by just holding down the base letter and selecting what you want from the popup menu that appears.  Or you can use the option key shortcuts.
Another option is the layout called US International PC, which has accent deadkeys on ~, ', etc.
Which ever layout you want to use, you must select it in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen.
To see which key does what for any layout, use the Keyboard Viewer:
