Accesing Oracle_Home in 11g

Please kindly help out; im looking for ORACLE_HOME...my OS is Window7 while my DB is Oracle 11g Express Edition

Hello,
You may check it on the Windows Registry.
To do that, launch regedit, then look at the value of the ORACLE_HOME variable. You may find it as below:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > ORACLE > KEY_OraDb11g_home1 > ORACLE_HOMEElse, you'll find enclosed the links for the *11.2 XE* Documentation and specific Forum:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17781_01/index.htm
Oracle Database 11g Express Edition Beta
Hope this help.
Best regards,

Thanks and regards.ORACLE_HOME based on ORACLE_BASE - in your case you set ORACLE_BASE=softwares/app/Administrator/ and OUI selected ORACLE_HOME as /softwares/app/Administrator/product/11.1.0/db_1

  • Multiple Oracle_home (best way to upgrade) ??

    hello all,
I was going thru the below link and found this very cool trick that i didnt know.
    http://searchoracle.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid41_gci1252556,00.html?track=NL-93&ad=587723&asrc=EM_NLT_1354356
    it goes something like this
*My favorite best practice is the one about multiple Oracle Homes. Here it how it goes. When applying a patch or a patchset, I recommend against applying to the existing Oracle Home. Instead, I suggest creating a new Oracle Home, and apply the patches there.
I create the first Oracle Home at /app/oracle/db_1, for instance. When a patch comes out, I install the whole Oracle software in a different home -- /app/oracle/db_2 -- and then apply the patch there. During the process of installation and patch application, the database is up and running, as it runs off the home /db_1. When the outage window comes, all I have to do is to shut down Oracle; change Oracle Home to db_2 and bring the database up. If there is a problem, I can reset the Oracle Home back to the old one.
So, here is the conventional approach:
    1. Shut down the database
    2. Apply patch to the Oracle Home
    3. Start the database
    4. In case of problems:
    5. Shut down the database
    6. Roll back the patch
    7. Start the database
Steps 2 and 6 could take as much as three hours depending on the amount of patching. The database is down during these times.
    In the new approach:
    1. Install new Oracle Home
    2. Apply the patch to the new Home
    3. Shut down the database
    4. Change Oracle Home to the new location
    5. Start the database
    6. In case of problems:
    7. Shut down the database
    8. Change Oracle Home to the old one
    9. Start the database
The database is down only during steps 4 and 8, which takes a couple of minutes at the most, not hours.*
But my question comes here...first of all is it possible ?? i am sure it is becoz Arup Nanda one of the know oracle guys wrote this article. so here are my Q?
1- So if i get this right...if i want to upgrade to 11g...and my database is on 10g...all i need to do this create a new 11g home...shutdown my 10g database...set my oracle_home to 11g and start my database up...and its all upgraded ????
2- Another thing that worries me is how this might behave in RAC environment. Any idea
on that? i know RAC provides the rollover upgrade so we might
not need this. but would be cool to know how it behaves...ANY IDEAS ?
3- Also, I wonder how CRS and ASM home like this idea ??

Basically when you switch from the old home to the new Oracle home you are following manual database upgrade procedures so you would need to run whatever scripts are contained in the instructions. Normally for an upgrade that is catalog and catproc and you would run these immediately after bringing the database up on the new home. For a patch there might be an upgrade script or no database level scripts may be necessary. That is the patch may effect only the binary.
What we actually do is in test install new copy of existing Oracle then patch/upgrade to current level. Next build an empty database and populate it. Next test. When OK shut it down and apply patch. Startup and follow Readme or Upgrade manual procedures. If test works fine and the upgrades tests OK then we remove the new test db, switch the actual in-use test databases over to the new patched home, run upgrade scripts as necessary, and continue.
After a few weeks we start getting maintenance windows to do production. Since we have multiple databases we usually do not do all of them at once.

  • 11g examples cd installation

    Hi :
I am trying to install oracle 11gR2 examples cd on my Linux -86-64 machine. The machine has two oracle Homes .
    1. dbhome_1 - contains Software and db
    2. applprod - contains just the software
When i run the installer to install the examples in the first home , it is throwing that
" The chosed installation conflicts with Software already installed in the given oracle home."
" Oracle Database Examples can only be installed into an existing Oracle Home "
I have made sure that the oracle base , home are set properly before running the installer. Any idea what could be going wrong?
    Regards,
    BMP

    Hi Hussein:
It is a kind of strange issue. When I ran a echo on oracle_home it was pointing to 10.2.0 home. This is happening even when I explicitly set the Oracle_home to 11g. I unset the oracle_home and reset it to use 11g. Now the installation went like a charm. Thanks for the help.

  • 11g R2 Grid Infrastructure asmca cannot detect 11g R1 ASM instance

I am playing with 11g ASM with XEN (one node on host (or dom0) and another node on vm (or dom1)) and was trying to do a Clusterware + ASM upgrade from 11.0.6 to 11.2.0. After solving some stupid problem, (see [rootupgrade.sh failed on 11g R1 to R2 Upgrade |http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1005424&tstart=0]) so that all services can be started in both nodes, I am trying to upgrade ASM.
I am trying asmca. But it is unable to detect the 11g R1 ASM instance. When started in GUI mode, it just offer to create ASM. When started in silent mode for upgrade, it shows:

Some documents mentioned to configure 'Oracle Restart' and the ASM instance name is +ASM. Are these necessary requirements? If so, where can I find information on Oracle Restart and how to rename the ASM instance? Besides, the documents said it is recommanded to upgrade with OUI, but I've already installed the software, can I still use OUI?

    Hi Thtsang,
sorry for not coming back to you earlier and thanks for "the helpful".
So, are you saying that after you have removed all the environment variables, you still got the error message "ORA-01034: ORACLE not available"? I thought you got an "ASM upgrade failed", because ASM was down at the time of the upgrade, which you then corrected saying: "In fact, ASM instance was started from Grid Infrastructure home.". Overall, I need to say that I am a bit confused to be honest.
The alert log entry sounds promising, although, one would need to see more context. For: "But when I use crsctl / srvctl to start ASM, it is still running in 11g R1 Oracle Home." So, something went wrong with the update. For: "BTW, if asmca does not work for me, can I upgrade manually?" - ASMCA is the tool that will perform an ASM upgrade. You can call it interactively, but you will have to use it.
Support note ID 950200.1 - "ASM 11gR2: How To Upgrade An ASM Instance To Release 11gR2 (11.2.0.1.0)?" describes an ASM upgrade to 11.2. Maybe this note can help you and if it is only to analyze what stage your cluster is in right now. It sounds like, this would be first thing that we need to find out.
    Good luck. Thanks,
    Markus

  • 11g Upgradation

    Hi,
We are doing an upgrade from 9i to 11g with EBS .We have upgraded the dbase and as a post step its mentioned in metalink doc 452783.1 as below.
    Run adgrants.sql
Copy $APPL_TOP/admin/adgrants.sql (adgrants_nt.sql for Windows) from the administration server node to the database server node. Use SQL*Plus to connect to the database as SYSDBA and run the script using the following command:
    $ sqlplus "/ as sysdba" @adgrants.sql (or adgrants_nt.sql)
    <APPLSYS schema name>
Grant create procedure privilege on CTXSYS
Copy $AD_TOP/patch/115/sql/adctxprv.sql from the administration server node to the database server node
Anyone have any idea where to copy adgrants.sql,adctxprv.sql in database node.?
    Thanks,
    praveen

    HI hsawwan ,
Thank you for your prompt reply..
One more doubt is that after the database upgrade ...it is mentioned to start the listener ,but the oracle_home of 11g contains just:
    $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
    $ ls
    samples shrept.lst
In the main doc ,it is mentioned to start the listener.Since in EBS environment,listener.ora,sqlnet.ora,tnsnames.ora is configured by autoconfig...and we are running the autoconfig as the next step after starting the listener(and also for runnning the autoconfig, listner shud be up)...so can we just copy the listener.ora,sqlnet.ora,tnsnames.ora files from old instance and edit oracle_home and other relevant entries in it...???
Also when we copy appsutil.zip and run autoconfig in dbtier will it overwrite these files which we copied...
In documents:452783.1 and 429825.1 nothing is mentioned regarding this...
    Pls help...
    Thanks,
    Praveen

  • Two oracle home 11g and 10g

    hi all
i have al-ready installed oracle 11g on my xp and created database then
when i want to install oracle 10g .it installed sucessfully
but i cannot connect to any of the oracle software
as  i put the SAME oracle_base for both the ORACLE 11g and oracle 10g
Can anyone help me how to have two oracle home on a single machine xp?
    Thanks
    Misin

    Hi,
    there isnt any problem.
During instalation you set ORACLE_BASE. It could be the same for both version but you have to set diffrent ORACLE_HOME
    Samething like this
(it's on linux but the same is on win )
    echo $ORACLE_BASE
    /opt/app/oracle
    for 10g
    echo $ORACLE_HOME
    /opt/app/oracle/product/10/db10g
    for 11g
    echo $ORACLE_HOME
    /opt/app/oracle/product/11/db11g
Now when do you want to run 10g set 10g enviroment and for 11g ORACLE_HOME form 11g.

Many Thanks,So, on this machine you have
    - Oracle 10g client (only), and in a seperate ORACLE_HOME
    - Oracle 11g rdbms
First, the 10g client will connect quite well to the 11g database
Second, the 11g database includes the basic client admin software, but the odbc drivers are not installed by default. You have to run OUI and choose 'custom' installation, then select 'windows components' from the list of available components.
I've never wanted to install the odbc driver as part of the database installation. Only on remote client installations.
What are you really trying to achieve?

  • Reset expired Passwords?

Recently the DBAs overhauled out account policies to have passwords expire every X days. I'm running into my first expired account and I'm getting an ORA-28001: the password has expired error, but no prompt to reset the password.
I thought I'd put in a feature request for a password reset window for this situation, but it seems that there was already one out there: http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=42626:39:2786248920877118::NO::P39_ID:22121
Closed: "Context menu to Reset Password is available"
Does anybody know how to go about resetting expired passwords in SQL Developer?

So my help-desk finally got around to doing an install of the 11g client. Still having an issue. I've done the following:
-Made my ORACLE_HOME the 11g client base dir.
-Made %ORACLE_HOME%\bin the first entry in my path
Still getting the same error. Even tried creating a new connection. I can connect with 11g SqlPlus.
    Any thoughts?

  • Moved Oracle 11.2 XE Directory, Connected to Idle Instance

So I will start off by stating I have moved the regular install location of Oracle 11.2 XE to a logical volume (/oracle) I had created on my RHEL 6.6 server. After shutting down both the database and the Oracle listener, I performed...
        $ cp -R /u01/app/* /oracle
        $ rm -rf /u01/app/oracl
        $ ln -s /oracle/oracle /u01/app/oracle
Then restarted the listener and the database. Now when I attempt to run the following as the user 'oracle' I get a message...
        $ sqlplus
Enter user-name: sys / as sysdba
        Enter password: ****
        Connected to idle instance.
Further, when I attempt a startup I get an error.
        > startup

I have attempted the solutions found  to no avail.

Already solved this issue. The problem was due to incorrect set of env variables:
    export ORACLE_BASE=/home/oracle/
    export ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/11G
    resulted:
    ORACLE_HOME=/home/oracle//11G
Linux is capable of retrieving directory content if path is set with *"//"* but seems like oracle does not. Due to this I've got this error. After resetting ORACLE_HOME variable, everything worked.

  • ORACLE_HOME in Oracle RAC 11g (Windows Server 2008)

    Hello,
I've got two (2) nodes in an Oracle RAC 11g in Windows Server 2008. Oracle software is installed in C:\app.
I realized that it's not been set ORACLE_HOME path. In System Properties-> Advanced -> Environment Variables, I see that ORACLE_HOME is empty.
    - Which path would be the ORACLE_HOME: C:\app\bd\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1
    - Do you have to setup the same in both nodes?
    Thanks

I realized that it's not been set ORACLE_HOME path. In System Properties-> Advanced -> Environment Variables, I see that ORACLE_HOME is empty.its normal behaviour
    - Which path would be the ORACLE_HOME: C:\app\bd\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1if you installed that location, yes
    - Do you have to setup the same in both nodes?actually, you dont HAVE TO, its not needed at all

  • 11g on RHEL5 - No initorcl.ora file in ORACLE_HOME/dbs

Hi, I am working on my first db install, I have completed OUI installation through Xming to a remote hosted server. It seemed to go OK but 1 warning concerning insufficent swap space - Expected 3036MB, Actual-1983MB
I completed the install process, creating the default db via config manager tool, and it all seemed more or less OK until I tried the URL for em console.
The warning here was the listener was not up. It seems ORACLE_SID was not defined properly. During install, the SID displayed as DB11G, and the DB Name as orcl. I am not sure which value I should be using?
I can manually define ORACLE_HOME AND ORACLE_SID, use the export utlitiy and get the listener up, but still no em console.
So....I tried starting from SQL...had to redefine env variables again, and got SQL running, login / as sysdba.
Was returned a message confirming I was connected to an idle instance. Thinking this may be the cause of em console and listener not functioning, I tried to run the STARTUP command from SQL>
    I received the following.....
    SQL> STARTUP
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/dbs/initDB11G.ora'
figuring I would just have to re-define ORACLE_SID = orcl, I looked in the /dbs directory and found only the following files...
    [root@bluesly1 dbs]# dir -a
    . .. hc_orcl.dat initdw.ora init.ora lkORCL orapworcl spfileorcl.ora
this explains why STARTUP could not find initDB11G.ora and would not find initorcl.ora either. Should I unset ORACLE_SID and let it run against init.ora??
Not sure where I went wrong, or why all these issues are popping up from a OUI graphic install that appeard to go fine other than the swap space??
    Can anyone help?
Which value for SID (DB11G or "orcl")
why didn't the init_SID.ora file get created, (the spfileorcl.ora exists)
should the oracle environment variables need resetting every login, or can I specify them to be at least connection persistent?
Are some of these values dynamic depending on which routine is using them?

Thanks, dizwell is a great site. Well, readers digest version, tried to run emconsole configuration assistants and got all buggerred up. So, back to square 1, de-installed, cleaned, re-installed. Initially had "unknown host error during install's prechecks (despite having all set-up instructions followed to a T). For whatever reson, reconfiguring the ethernet adatpter and re-running system-config-network utility cleared up the error, and install went ahead. I am now up and em console is working, but only from the server's browser (Netscape 9) and WOW is it SLOW!. I am accessing a remote server from a vista home machine through Xming/puTTY.
It is all working, the X displays are good, but a little slow. Normal browsing through X with firefox or navigator is slower than usual, but workable. However, em is wildly slow, almost to the point of being unusable. I have two generic questions:
    1. Anything to do to speed up Xming connection overall? On this particular connection, typical actual internet downlaod rates are about 900kbs, but X is behaving similar to about a 300kbs connection.
    2. My regular browser (IE) will not resolve the URL for the em console. Is there anything I can do to access em via my normal browser, and benefit from my normal connection speed, which is pretty good. Does this require an 11g client install, or should the console be accessible from any machine?

  • Cannot Connect to Two 11g DBs - Same tnsnames.ora different Oracle_Home

We have two 11g databases on seperate Oracle Homes on the same server. The tnsnames.ora and listener.ora entries for db_2 were combined with those of db_1 in ...../db_1/network/admin. They are:
    # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: /u01/app/oracle/product/db_1/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    DB1 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST=10.200.18.28)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = DB1)
    #DB2 =
    # (DESCRIPTION =
    # (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST=10.200.18.28)(PORT = 1521))
    # (CONNECT_DATA =
    # (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    # (SERVICE_NAME = DB2)
    # listener.ora Network Configuration File: /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/network/admin/listener.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST =10.200.18.28)(PORT = 1521))
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = DB1)
    (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/DB1)
    #SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    # (SID_LIST =
    # (SID_DESC =
    # (SID_NAME =DB2)
    # (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/DB2)
DB2 is commented out because we coulod not reach either database when it was not. Now we can each one or the other. We were getting
"ora_12514 TNS:listener could not resolve seervice name given in connect description."
The problem is that we need to reach each database when connected to the server from eithere the client or server.
I would appreciate any information, direct experience or pointers to documents.
    Thanks

You shouldn't need either DB1 or DB2 listed in your listener.ora file. They should automatically register with the listener if it is running on the default port (which yours is).
If you do want to statically register the instances, the syntax you have in your original post is a little wrong. It should be:
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1)
    (SID_NAME = DB1)
    (SID_DESC =
    (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_2)
    (SID_NAME = DB2)
All in one variable, not two. Also, the home paths you had in your post were missing the _.
All that said, it seems to be much preferred to let the instance register itself. If you try the following, does the instance register?
    * remove the SID_LIST_LISTENER configuration for DB1
    * restart the listener
    * connect to DB1 as someone with the DBA role and execute 'alter system register;'
    * check the listener with 'lsnrctl status listener' and see whether the instance registered.
You should see something like: (notice 'READY' instead of 'UNKNOWN')
Instance "DB1", status READY, has 1 handler(s) for this service...

  • Error while executing Report migrated from 6i to 11g

    Hello,
We have migrated forms & reports from 6i to 11g.
Most of the reports work fine but we are having issue with very few reports.
Let me explain the issue here:
We have a Form that Runs a report.
The Report has a PLL which loads a C library and calls a C Function. [using ORA_FFI]
The C Function which is called has embedded SQL in it.
The Report Server Engine crashes on encountering the first Executable SQL statement. [A Select or Insert]
Need help to resolve this as we have tried a lot of things and not been successful.
Below is a gist of the errors we see in teh Report server logs:

    Regards,
    KVS
I can post the other logs if it helps.

    Hi Rajesh,
If you just want to execute the report in web, you can do one thing.
Go to Query designer of your relevent system.
Open the Query which you want to execute in Web.
Then in the Query tab(first one) in the drop down list you have the Option  'execute'./ the 5th Icon  in the Query designer screen. On clicking this it will open a new window( Internet Explorer) and prompts for your system credentials.
Upon providing them  the query start executing if it deosn't have any selections, else selection screen appears.
You can save the link and can use this when ever you want to execute the query.Use it in the BW system environment's Intrenet explorer only.
    Hope this helps.
