Access airport extreme remotely - how do I?

Could somebody tell me if there is a way to access my airport extreme remotely over the internet. I know with netgear routers you can just tick a box to enable remote access but can't work out how I do this with the airport extreme. Anyone know?

I take it you know how to get your IP or dynamic DNS, so we'll skip that part.
In Airport Utility, be in Manual Setup. Under the Airport tab, on the Base Station page, click: Allow configuration over Ethernet WAN port.
Then when you're away from home, you can point Airport Utility at your DynDNS name and it should work.

  • Help Accessing Airport Extreme Remotely?

I have an Airport extreme base station at home and want to be able to login and admin the router from remote locations. I have logged into the router and set the checkbox for WAN access but this doesn’t seem to help.
All other routers I have owned you are able to login to them from your WAN IP address and then play with the setting s. When I launch the airport utility from outside my home it doesn’t find the base station, same with iOS app. What am I doing wrong, or is this even possible with the AE?
    Cheers

Which router are you asking about?
If you have an Apple AirPort router, settings are accessed by opening the AirPort Utility application.
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the AirPort icon, then click Edit to access the settings

  • Reboot AirPort Extreme Remotely Off Network?

Is there a way I can access my Airport Extreme remotely to reboot it? I mean totally off my home network like with my iPhone or something? I know the IP of my Airport Extreme but cannot figure out a way to connect to it remotely when not on the same network. I just want to be able to reboot it.
    Thanks...

Yes this is possible, if Back to My Mac is enabled in AirPort Utility, using your Apple ID:
Select your Extreme with the button "Other AirPort Base Stations" then Base Station > Restart...

I have my Time Machine on an external drive (not connected to Airport Extreme) and I have an external HD attached to airport extreme. Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme. How?

Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme.
    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

  • Airport Extreme - Remote is not passing internet access - help please

    I have the following:
Cable modem - > WAN of Airport Extreme. - works perfectly - wireless clients in range get internet access and the network works.
Second Airpot Extreme set to relay this network. It connects, gets a "green" light - seems to be set up properly, but wireless clients in that area cannot get internet. Why is it not passing internet.
Can anyone explain step by step how to do this or post a link to an apple doc?
    Thank you,
    Miklos.

Hi, actually this is still not working.
I got the second base station configured so that when it started up, it was working properly as a "remote" station, and I was getting internet fine through an ibook there (which is normally too far away from the main station to get any signal).
However, today, although the second "remote" station still has a green light and is connected to the network it is not getting an IP address from the main base station - and so I can't get any internet through that 2nd base station anymore.
Why was it working yesterday and not today when I've changed nothing?
    Any help much appreciatd.
    Miklos.

  • Remotely Access Airport Extreme / Airport Utility

I am needing direction on how to remotely access my Airport extreme esttings remotely. I travel often for work, and at times, I need to access the AEBS to maybe change Acess Time restrictions for my kids or whatever. Is there a way to access remotely via Safari on my iphone or is the only answer using Back to My Mac via an internet connection on my laptop? Id like to be able to do it thru my phone no matter where I am if possible. Please inform me on how to do this
    Thanks
    Brandon

    Tesserax,
Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it. I don't have a MobileMe account, however I did setup iCloud. I know I can remotely configure my Airport Extreme using the standard desktop Airport Utility (I have a dyndns dynamic address setup). However, I was really hoping to do at least SOME remote router configuration with my phone. I guess I can't =\
I think it's quite strange Apple doesn't have a way to do this. Every other router on the market has a simple web administration interface that can be used via Safari on the iPhone. Not being able to do this with the Aiport Extreme is a real deal killer for me. Why have an iPhone Airport Utility App that can only be used locally? If I'm at my home or office and I want to configure my router, I'll just jump on a freakin' computer!

  • Remote Access, Airport Extreme, and ReadyNAS Duo, Oh My!

I am begging for help on this issue. I've contacted Netgear support at least 6 times on this issue, and called Apple support once, all to no avail. I'm posting this both in the Netgear forums and Apple forums to try to get some help.
Simple problem: I can't seem to figure out how to get my ReadyNAS Duo to be remotely accessible AT ALL (i.e., through any protocol).
This is one of the main reasons we bought the Duo, and it's killing me that I can't figure out how to make it work. I'm new to networking, and I can't seem to find anyone (include any tech support people!) who can actually help me with this!
I'm on a Mac, running OS X 10.5.6. I'm using an Airport Extreme router. I've got a ReadyNAS Duo 2150.
I've enabled FTP access, HTTPS access, HTTP access, CIFS access, and AFP access through ReadyNAS Frontview.
I've tried to forward Ports 21, 443, and 80 to the Duo's internal IP address (although I'm not exactly sure if I did it right... I filled in the "TCP" port fields, but not the "UDP" ports fields).
When I try to access the Duo, I simply type in the IP address (in Safari) that shows up as the IP address in the Airport Utility, and I've tried various configurations of that, such as "https://[IP Address]/", "https://[IP Address]/admin" "https://[IP Address]:443/" and the same things using FTP, AFP, etc. (through "Connect to Server" in the Finder).
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone help me with this! It's been months and I just don't understand what I'm missing.
    Thanks.
    -Celeste

When you are at home, you would need to use the private/local IP address which the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) provides to that device.
When you are away from home, you would need to use the public IP address provided by your ISP and used by the AEBS on the Internet/WAN side.

  • Can I access my Airport Extreme Remotely?

I want to set up an Airport Extreme at our vacation cottage out-of-town, for guests to use.
Because the cottage is far awsay from where I live, is there a way I can access the AEBS remotely (say, from home), to check that it's working and to reset/reconfigure it if necessary? I don't plan to have a computer connected to the AEBS when I'm not there.

Yes you can - but the bigger problem caused by the fact that unless your ISP provides you with a static public IP address for that base station, its public IP address will change over time and you won't know what that new IP address is. The Airport Base Station is not designed, unfortunately, with a built in update client so that you could get around this problem using a service like that provided by http://www.dyndns.org
Resetting and reconfiguration should never be necessary anyway. Just leave your guests an instruction page for what to do if they cannot get an internet connection. Just the basics - like pulling power to the modem and base station for a moment to reset the connection. That type of thing.

  • When connected to NETGEAR WNR1000, I can't remotely access Airport Extreme attached hard drive.

I have a hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme at home and I am staying at a friend's place where I am connecting to the Internet via a NETGEAR WNR1000 router (which is routing a broadband-cable connection from Comcast Xfinity).
When I am connected directly to the cable modem, the Airport Extreme's drives shows up in my Finder but when I'm connected via the NETGEAR router it doesn't show up.
There must be some setting in the NETGEAR router that is blocking access but I've not got clue one what setting I need to adjust or change on the router.
    Could someone please advise me?

I checked the NETGEAR router settings and it was not configured to block any services or sites. I did as you advised and set up Port Mapping/Forwarding from 548 to the IP assigned to my Mac but nothing showed up in the Finder (no Shared Devices etc).
I then connected directly to the cable modem via ethernet and Shared Devices showed up in my Finder window with my Airport Extreme. I connected to one of the drives connected to the AEBSn, then unplugged the ethernet and connected the NETGEAR back to the cable modem and thus my MacBook Pro was connected via WiFi to the NETGEAR router and to the Internet.
Shared Devices disappeared from my Finder window, BUT the HD I had connected to remained connected. It was listed under my MacBook Pro's name (3rd item after the local HD, "Network"). The icon is a blue and white drive with the WiFi logo on it.
I verified that I could access the files on this remotely connected drive and did a Get Info and in the window that popped up it said "Server: afp://MilkBar._afpovertcp._tcp.malckwan.members.mac.com/Untitled%2001".
I tried to use the Connect To (Cmd-K) to connect to another drive attached to the AEBSn (Untitled%2002) using the same formatted address but could not connect.
PS. I did verify that I was mapping Port 548 to the current IP assigned to the MacBook Pro.

  • Airport Extreme & Remote Access for database application

    Hi There,
I have spent an entire week of my time between apple, apple consultants and networking experts trying to get a access remotely to a simple database program inside an wireless network. I have read the discussions on remote access thru the AEBS and port mapping.
I'm hoping an user here can help me with a foolproof solution that the 'apple experts' can seem to design?
All that is required to get this program up and running remotely is the ip address of my computer inside my wireless network. I have set that this computer to a static address but since my dsl provider uses dynamic IP's this doesn't seem to work (or it does for about 12 hours until the IP address of my AEBS is changed). Will port mapping work for me or is my only solution an up-charged static IP?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions......the thought of spending another week on this is frightening!

If your ISP is refreshing the dynamic host configuration of the public ip address assigned to the ISP provided router you will need to request a static ip address from your service provider.
The addresses that are used "inside of your network" are private ip addresses. If you are using the (1) public address for your router (APE)(Apple airport extreme) from the ISP what you are trying to do will not work very well since your router (APE) will use the Public IP address to provide access to the public internet for your private network using the private ip addresses you have used to create your subnet and told your router (APE) about. Three private IP address schemes can be used for a private internet. One for each class. Class A 10.x.x.x/8, Class B 172.16.0.0/12 and Class C 192.168.0.0/24. Translated using dynamic NAT (network address translation with overload) making your LAN hosts using private IP addresses to seem as if they are using a public ip address allowing access to the public internet where only public ip addresses can be used.
PAT (port address translation) is what you are trying to accomplish. For PAT you must have a valid public ip address from your ISP and a private address from your network assigned to interesting host. Use the private ip assigned to the interesting host in the port mapping panel of airport admin that you wish to allow access to via the global internet as well as the tcp or udp port number for the traffic to be directed. For example port 5003 for FileMakerPro or port 20 and 21 for ftp. You should also implement security policies to protect your network and hosts.
Since you said that it works for 12 hours you must have the basics set up correctly. All you need now is to get a static ip address assigned to you from your ISP or use a service such as http://www.dyndns.com/
Hope I didn't ramble on too much

  • How to get Powerbook G4 12" OSX 10.3.9 to access Airport Extreme Dual Band

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro 13" V 10.5.7 and a new Airport Extreme Dual Band.
Prior I had been using a Powerbook G4 12" OSX 10.3.9 and an older version of the Airport Extreme (old saucer dome shape) and they worked no problem.
Now I have the new airport Dual band set up. The new MacBook accesses it no problem. The Powerbook will not access for some reason. The Airport ID shows up on airport icon menu on the powerbook, but when I enter the password it will not access. It says wrong password. It is the correct password for the Macbook though?
How can I get the Powerbook to access it?
If you need more info please ask and I will provide.

I had the same problem with dual-band Time Capsule connected to G4 Powermac DP running Leopard and Powerbook G4 667 running 10.3.9.
After trying many things, I finally ran software update on my Powerbook, then found there is an Airport update 4.2 addressing a password / security compatibility issue.
Powerbook connected with TC just fine!

  • Remote Access Airport Extreme 802.11n

Need Help with setting up Airport Extreme 802.11n *so I can access it from a remote location.*

Is the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) directly connected to the Internet modem ... that is, is the AEBSn the only router in the network configuration that you are trying to reach remotely?
If so, do you have a MobileMe account and using Back to my Mac (BTMM) or another means to access the AEBSn?

  • Access AirPort Extrems USB hard drive from Android

I'm starting a new discussion because I erroneously marked my earlier discussion "solved".
I've been using a USB connected disk drive on my AirPort Extreme from my Android tablet for years.  Since upgrading the AirPort to version 7.6.4 I can no longer access the disk drive from the tablet.  I have not changed anything on the tablet, only the AirPort.
The tablet can see the AirPort itself as 10.0.1.1 and can see the attached disk drive, but when I try to access the drive I get a series of possible errors including Firewall issues,  SMB service is off or out of scope and WLAN is off.
I don't know how to look at the firewall on the AirPort or check on the SMB service (I can't find either topic in AirPort Utility).
I have tried a factory reset, and also reverting back to version 7.5.2 as suggested in the other thread, but I still get the same message when I try to connect.
The drive is fully accessible from either of the two Macs on the network.
Please help - I really need to access files on this disk from the tablet.  I konw Dropbox will work, but ti's cumbersome and I don't really want some of the files to live on Dropbox.
    Walt

I would venture to say that the issue may be related to the AirPort firmware update not being compatible with the current version of firmware on your Android tablet. Of course, you probably already know this. I'm not aware of any incompatibilities between these two devices as Apple has not provided any information on this.
As far as firewall on the AirPort, unless you are accessing the Extreme from a remote location its NAT firewall would be a mute issue. About SMB, this is automatically enabled when you configure the Extreme to share out an external USB HDD. So there is no setting to change there either.
I have tried a factory reset, and also reverting back to version 7.5.2 as suggested in the other thread, but I still get the same message when I try to connect.
If your Android was not having this issue when the Extreme was running 7.5.2 firmware, but is now after downgrading it to this version tends to make me believe the issuse may be with your tablet. Is there a potential firmware update for it?
