Access cable card from multiple PCs?

I've got several PCs on my home network. I instsalled a cable card on computer A. Is there a way I can watch live TV or program the card from computer B?

Here I am using Java Type IV for database
connection.
So,there was no necessity of creating DNS.How your app communicates with db shouldn't matter for the end user. Still, you may want to use a functional network name also for the thin client driver connection string.
So,is there any other way to solve this problem.What is the problem really? Do you not use dns for network naming? Maybe you have to manage the hosts file on every client then.

Access Canon MX860 from multiple accounts on iMac over WiFi

I bought a Canon PIXMA MX860 yesterday and set it up using my account on our iMac running 10.5.6. The printer is connected over WiFi. I can print and scan from my account.
When I try to print from another account on the iMac (my wife as an account and we have a guest account) the printer queue says "Printer is currently off-line". I sent a message to Canon, they told me to set permissions for "Everyone" to Read & Write on the Library folder. I tried this for:
/Macintosh HD/Library/Printers/Canon
and all enclosed items. Still doesn't work.
Has anyone else set up the MX860 to print from multiple accounts on a computer? Did you have to do anything beyond the procedure specified by Canon?

Hello Matt,
I don't understand why Canon support would have got you to change permissions on the Canon folder. This is not normally required.
I have the MP980 connected via wireless, and I can print to it from my Admin account and a standard account I made up just to check. What account type do you have set for the missus?
I also would have thought that the printer off-line message would have had more to do with her account not being able to access the network connection, rather than not being able to access the core Printers folder.
If using her account, you open the Print Queue and select the Utility icon, and then set the Canon IJ Printer Utility to network, does the MX860 display? And if you select it, can you peform any of the Maintenance functions?
Also, if you connect the MX860 directly to the Mac via USB, are you able to print to it using her account?

You can access your account, but the music will only be where you put it.
It doesn't just magically appear on any computer that you log into. You would have to copy the music and put it on the computer.
You can use home share, your backup copy, cds, dvds, external drives,etc to copy and move music if you like.

Accessing Common functionality from multiple parts of my web app

I have a web app and one of the modules is getting used by other modules in the application.
This was ok when we had 2 modules accessing this module but now we are adding more and more.
The module consists of JSP and Servlets and Backend DAO's.
Right now I have special cases (if statements) that determine what module is accessing this module (each module passes in it id in the URL for example testId, correctionId.
Basically what this module creates can be assoicated with other modules, so the DAO will save and then check to see if certian module ids are present and then does a save based on that.
I dont think this solution is very elegent and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a good way to design this module so it can be easily accessed from other modules in my application.
So to summerize:
All my modules are JSP/Servlet/DAO/Model Code
One of my Modules is accessed from many other modules.
When this module saves its data to the database, it has to take the id that the calling module passsed into it and determine what database bridge table it should save to.
I want to if anyone has any suggestions on how to design this so allowing more modules to access this module will not require anot of extra code in the module.

Use DAO Pattern.
Have a Factory Class which determines which DAO object it instantiates and hands it over to the Servlet.
Based on the ID, Create the instance object of the DAO and have an interface which has the contract method.
What I mean is :
For Example lets say u have a Interface "ModuleDAO". Have a method "persistData"...
Create 2 DAO Implementations which implement the same Interface and both will have their own "persistData" implementation going to the respective Tables. The reason why I am recommending multiple DAO implementation is to avoid If else / etc and complex coding.The implementations are independant of each other.
Have a DAO Factory [or you can use Spring Framework Bean Factory] infront and have your servlet request for the DAO Implemntation based on the ID.
Your servlet should have NO reference to the Internal Implementation which is being retuirned. It only need to know about the Interface. This way code is clean, decoupled from logic and easier if you want to move the logic out to EJB / External WebServices, etc...

Accessing iTunes music from multiple computers, platforms?

Please accept my apologies in advance if this is a dumb question, but I'm a newbie and I need help.
I have a PC that I have been using as a storage drive for a (33GB +) collection of iTunes (recently upgraded to iTunes 8.02.20). I play those tunes on a 1st generation 4GB Nano, as well as at home on the computer. That PC is one of several that runs on a peer-to-peer wired and and wireless network in my house, the wireless part through several different access points.
All of my music was loaded into iTunes from recordings I own, either on CD or digitized from vinyl. None was bought on the iTunes store or downloaded from the web, so I don't think there should be any DRM issues, but I don't know if there are any limitations imposed by iTunes as a default.
I have two questions:
1 - I recently got a MacBook Pro, and I'd like to be able to duplicate a portion of my music onto its hard drive (but nowhere near all, as it would clutter up the hard drive unacceptably).
2 - I'd also like to be able to get at the iTunes files from all of the machines on the network, without duplicating the files themselves, if that's possible (to be able to include them in creating slideshows, movies, etc.)
Is there any way to make this possible? Are there any DRM issues that attend doing something like this? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

So basically you have the network share. All the users drag files from it into their itunes library, so the database ITL file knows where to go to play it.

How to access (call) variables from multiple components

I have what I think is a basic task, but I cant seem to get it to work. I have a Flex project with one application. In addition to the one application, I have many components that are used in the application. These components vary from simple (a ComboBox) to complex (many sub-components). What I need to do is define a viable in one component and access it in another component. I can't seem to do this. Below is an example of how I think it should be:

     You may also want to consider using the mx.core method.
     In your main application script area define all of your public variables and functions. Then from your component, you can reference these absolutely with the following syntax.

     var com_UserID = mx.core.Application.application.userID;
Using this method ensures that you will have access to any Function or variable within the scope of the project.

You can access your account, but the music will only be where you put it.

Accessing TC HD from multiple machines

From my Macbook running 10.4.11 I can read the xcel file/make changes/save but when I try to access it from my macbook pro running 10.5.2
You get an alert, 'Could not be found. check spelling of the file name, and verify that the location is correct."
You can see the file in finder, and you can copy it to the desktop of the MCP work on it and then recopy it back to the TCHD.
Why can't I work on it like I can from the older laptop?
doesn't matter which file creates the document-
the icon on the MCP is a blue airport drive but on the Macbook it is a network icon????

Actually, I wasn't thinking of using an SQL database since I haven't studied it. But, would it be a good idea to have one object of type "Database", and use 'synchronize' to control thread access?
Also, the database access needs to be restricted based on different users, so I am using a SecurityManager. I was thinking the structure would look something like this:
security manager
database manager
database
in this way, a request to retrieve data from the database would need to be requested from my security manager. If the request is allowed, it would be filtered down to the database manager. Is this the best way to do this?
And finally, someone told me that using something like an "event queue" to access data would work but I've never tried this. My database manager thread would process the requests one at a time. would this work well?

UDP responses from multiple PCs

My laptop is on a local area network that consists of the laptop, a switch, and two RF switch boxes.
Not connected to the corporate network.
According to the equpment vendor a command can be broadcast to the local network using UDP and all tthe boxes that receive the request will respond.
The VI that they gave me only shows the response for one the boxes at a time.
How do I go about modifying the VI so that the response from both boxes are received?
Attached is their VI which I have simplified. The IPv4 address is for my laptop.
The boxes are at 192.168.0.141 and 192.,168.0.142

Well, that's the correct math, look it up! (the original code does exactly the same, but in a Rube Goldberg kind of way )
For example if your IP address is:
192.168.5.45 and the netmask is 255.255.255.0, the broadcast address is 192.168.5.255
10.47.5.45 and the netmask is 255.0.0.0, the broadcast address is 10.255.255.255
etc.
Thus the local subnet broadcast addrees can be determined from the IP address and netmask.
Note that each address is internally just a U32 integer and boolean operations will function bitwise.

Help - can't access one website from my Macs, but I can on my PCs

A couple of days ago, I stopped being able to access at least one specific website on my Mac.
It’s my own domain so I haven’t been banned or blocked.
Everyone else can access the site, so it’s not down.
I can access the site from the PCs in my house, so it’s not an ISP issue.
I cannot access it from FTP, Firefox, Safari, or anything else on my Mac, so it’s not a browser issue.
I can access every other site I’ve tried, so it’s not an internet issue.
I’ve repaired permissions. I’ve rebooted several times.
What gives? Any ideas?
I just tried it on my brother’s computers on the SAME network. His PC could access it but not his Mac. So it appears isolated to Macs on this network.
I'm baffled.

Can someone help me understand how I can use cable cards with external digital tuners?

Here's my situation. I currently have a PC with an internal TV tuner card. I connect the internal TV tuner card to a standard QIP2500-2 Set Top Box. I've never been very happy with this setup, although it mostly works. But, I can only record or watch one channel at a time. In addition, changing channels requires a silly IR blaster so changing channels from Windows Media Center uses the IR remote signals to change channels on the set top box.
I was thinking I could use a product like this together with a cable card from Verizon, eliminating the set top box. I read the FAQ here but I am still unclear about how cablecards work and what capabilities they enable. My questions are:
1) The FAQ says using a cablecard eliminates the use of the online TV guide. How then does one schedule recordings in windows media center? It would seem silly to have to still have a STB just to get the program guide. What do others do about this?
2) Are the cable cards provided by Verizon compatible with the above product shown in the link? The Verizon FAQ says the device must be marked "DCR" to be compatible, but looking at all the digital tuner products at NewEgg, none of them seem to be marked with "DCR". They say, "m-CARD".
3) What are others out there doing to utilize FIOS TV with a computer and not have a set top box?

I haven't used the SiliconDust product, but I have been using a similar product by Ceton, for nearly five years.
By inserting a CableCARD into the tuner, you would have access to the same channels as a set-top box. You rent a cableCARD from Verizon, just like you'd rent a set-top box from them. I have an m-card, which just allows multiple channels to be tuned at once, unlike the older s-card.
You do, however, lose Pay Per View and on-demand programming. For me, it's not a great loss.
The program guide is handled through Windows Media Center, which holds programming data for the next 14 days. You schedule your recordings there. It's also smart enough to reschedule shows, if there's a recording conflict (too many scheduled shows, not enough tuners)
Although you can contunue to use an IR blaster (I use one), you can also get a Media Center companion app from Ceton. It doesn't require a Ceton tuner...it will still control Media Center. The app costs a few bucks, but it's worth it. They make it for Android and Apple, and maybe Windows Phone. It will let you manage your schedules, and use your phone/tablet as a remote control over WiFi.
Buy a big hard drive to hold your scheduled recordings. Expect to use an average of 10-15 gigabytes per hour of HD recording. The beauty of this system, is that you can just add another hard drive whenever you need more space, sonething the STB's won't let you do.
For service in other rooms, use an Xbox360 if you have one. Or, buy a Ceton Echo extender (again, doesn't require a Ceton tuner). Don't use Wi-Fi for your extenders. Wired Ethernet is a must...most wireless won't be able to keep up.

which is in a different time zone. I would like to be able to work

this so we always have the latest files on a given PC and do not
have to download all the files each time from the server? What is
the best FTP program (we use PCs) and what routine do you use that
has been most successful? Would be most grateful if some could
point me in the right direction on this.

1. Share the local site between the two PCs. I do this when I
want to work
on the same site from multiple PCs. Note, this is only
effective when its
being used by ONE PERSON. For multiple editors, it will not
work.
2. Each workstation would have a local site, and they would
share the
remote site. Enable CheckIn/CheckOut so that you have to GET
the files from
the remote site to begin work on them, and then PUT them back
when you are
finished. In this case, the local site is only used for
intermediate
edits/saves.
