Access connections 5.30 Auto location switching problem

Trying to configure AC with 3 profiles.  1.Office wired, 2.wireless and 3.'Out of office wired'   The last profile is for use when visiting client sites, makes proxy settings blank, ethernet ip to dhcp etc. I only want the Out of office wired profile to be applied manually so that whenever returning to the office and booting from cold the Office wired profile will be applied.  AC doesnt' seem to actually work properly.  I untick the 'Out of office wired' profile in Tools>Location Switching.  I return from client site the office and plug in and switch on from cold.  The first profile automatically applied is 'Out of office wired'.  Despite having unticked this profile in auto location switching it still applies.  I test in the office with the wireless profile and no cable.  I then switch off the wireless adapter and plug in the cable.  Result:  Profile3.  Out of office wired is auto applied.  Again it was unticked in Location Switching
Surely this behaviour is wrong and constitues a bug.
Thinkvantage technologies seem to be going down hill.

Yes, ethernet is enabled and the port is saved for profile 1, the office profile.
The Out of office profile, no.3 is unticked for auto location switching - To me this indicates that the port should not be saved.
If I apply the Out of office profile and then return to the office, not only is the unticked profile 3 applied automatically but AC shows it has saved the ethernet port for profile3 and removed it from profile 1.
I have two questions:
- If this is how it's supposed to work, what's the point of being to able to untick the profiles in auto location switching?
- Is the last correctly applied profile saved and applied after - a cold boot?  - a disconnection?  - a hibernation?

    Connection Type : Infra
    Wireless Mode : 802.11a
Wireless Security : Use IEEE 802.1x Authentication
    Acces Point Authentication : WPA
    Data Encryption : TKIP
    EAP Type : PEAP
Authenticate as COmputer when Computer informations is avaible
Allow Fast Roaming ( CCKM )
    Tunnel Authentication : MS-CHAP-V2
Validate Server Certificate :  Verisign Class 3 Public Primary CA
When i try to connect wireless it cannot authenticate with AP, but when I decide to use MS to handle settings it connects without a problem. When i look into settings in MS it looks to me as it has choosen the same kind og settings as i choose in Access Connection....
Why cant i make it work with A.C !!!!!!!
    Any1 ??

You can only do that under EAP-TLS (i.e. a user and a computer certificate), not PEAP-MSCHAP.

  • Updated to Access Connections 5.02 and location profiles disappeared

After updating Access Connections from 4.52 to 5.02 all the wireless location profiles are gone, including WEP keys, etc.  The old version of AC worked fine on my X61S.
    1) How can one upgrade to AC 5 without losing these?
    2) I have complete system backups.  In what file or registry entry can I find the saved location profiles from 4.52?

Same thing happened to me. Most frustrating...
I was able to find a listing of the now-missing profiles in "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Lenovo\Access Connections\Locations". Using regedit, I removed the following DWORD key, "m_bHideInList", from each entry and all of my location profiles now appear in Access Connections again as they were before. Looks like there also are a variety of other (rather straightforward) configuration parameters in the registry key(s) listed above, so hopefully something in there is the magic bullet.
    Anyway, hope this helps.
C'mon Lenovo -- this seems to be sloppy coding, pure and simple. You're better than this!

  • X220 - Access Connections Wireless issue - Driver disconnected while associating

I am trying to connect to our wireless network at work.  I have verified that my settings are correct with the other X220s that we have connecting to our network.  When the connections fails and I select "help me fix this" I get four error messages.
Thanks in advance if anybody has any ideas.
    Connection status:  Not connected
Cause:  The driver disconnected while associating.
    Error code:  229378
    Recommended actions:
The selected wireless network is out of range or unavailable.  Move to a location that is closer to the access point and try again.
Verify that the encryption settings (WEP/TKIP/AES) specified in this profile match those expected by the wireless network.
Verify that the wireless adapter in your computer has not been restricted from accessing the radio channels being used by the wireless network.
Verify that the wireless network name (SSID) is specified correctly. The SSID is case sensitive.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I share your pain with same Intel WiFi Link 1000 bgn.  After many, many hours yesterday I am now solidly running Wireless N at 144 Mbps on a LinkSys E4200, 99% reception from 30 feet away.
Previous to yesterday I could not get 'N' to work at all.
First, if you have a newer dual frequency Router, this Intel adapter only supports 2.4ghz..
    1. I am using Access Connections 5.85, Windows 7
    2. Router: 2.4 Ghz Network Mode: Mixed
    3. On my LinkSys router Channel: Auto NEVER worked for either  'G' or 'N'.  I picked channel 4 by chance and things got better.  No further experiments.
    3. Channel Width: Auto (20mhz or 40mhz).
    4. Earlier forums indicate WPA2-P and AES must be selected.  That's what I am running.
    5. Numerous references to "power" conflicts.  Set all Power Management to Maximum Power.
(Control Panel -> Device Manager ->Network Adapters -> Intel WiFi Link 1000 bgn -> Power Management)
(Access Connections -> Wireless Settings -> 4. Advanced Configuration-> Maximum Performance)
If you followed these steps, Wireless G should be working stabily for you now.
Now for the secret sauce to make Wireless N work:  go to http://communities.intel.com/message/82098#82098
See Feb 3, 2010 post How to get 5100 AGN to connect at N speed?
I am indebted to this guy.
Save the instructions!  For some reason my EDGE 14 wireless totally quit this week and that's what sent me down this wireless rabbit hole again.  At least this time I was able to make N mode work for the first time.
    Frustrated but relieved,
    Lew

  • Access Connections broken on brand new laptop

    Hello Helpful People!
I've got a brand new ThinkPad W510.  Whenever I try to use ThinkPad Access Connections to set a location, Windows Wireless Service sneaks in and takes over.  This means that ThinPad Access Connections is completely useless for me.
Any thoughts on a registry change or whatever, that would make Windows Wireless Server not take over from TVAC?
By the way, when I turn off "WLAN Auto Config" in services.msc, that disables TVAC completely also.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Access Connections uses the wireless subsystem of the operating system.  Under XP, AC was a replacement.
You will see "Windows Wireless Service" in Access Connections when you create wireless profile outside of Access Connections. I would suggest removing all AC profiles, then open the wireless setting under manage networks and remove all the wireless profiles left over.  From that point on, only make wireless connections through Access Connections.

  • T400 Vista vs Access Connections

(I hope this doesn't show up twice.  My first try failed with an undecipherable server error)
Basically, wifi is unusable on my new T400 when running Vista Ultimate or Vista Business 64.  If I run XP it works just fine.  All 3 are stock Lenovo OEM installs from factory media.
My home wifi router is sitting close to the laptop.  W/Vista, I can usually see it via "find" but usually can't connect.  Occasionally after rebooting I can.  Sometimes I can't even see it in find.  W/XP on this T400, or with XP on my T61, it works as expected.
I suspect confiicts between Vista wifi management and Access Connections.  With XP, one could solve this by unchecking the "let windows manage..." box in wifi properties.  There doesn't seem to be such an option in Vista.   I have tried disabling the windows "Zero Configuration" service (WLAN Autoconfig after SP1) but that doesn't help.  Without that service, AC can't even turn on the radio.  Worse (!) I can't turn the radio on manually via Fx-F5 either.  Bluetooth yes, wifi no.
It looks like AC actually uses some/all of the WLAN Autoconfig function.
One thing I haven't tried yet is uninstalling AC and just using the Vista wifi management.  Even if that works, it gives up a lot in terms of profile management.
I welcome any suggestions.  As it stands, this shiny new T400 is unusable.   It's a nice little machine, but this isn't the first of the frustrations....
    Thanks,
    Z

Unfortunately, I need to use this thing on the road as well as at home, so a fixed IP address isn't an option since I won't know what subnet(s) will be in use.  I experienced the same problems last weekend at two hotels and in the Denver airport, so it isn't my router.
I have done quite a bit more experimentation with this problem, without any resolution.  I do notice that when it fails Vista thinks it is connected, but only locally.  It has assigned a 169... address which I take to mean that DHCP has failed.  Trying a command: ipconfig /renew fails with an error.
If I let  it fail, then reboot, it usually will succeed as long as I try to connect to the same access point that failed before the reboot.
I tried uninstalling Access Connections, but Vista has the same problem(s) when it is doing the management!  Failed connections, local only connections, and often success after a reboot.  One interesting and nasty difference is that when using the Windows management w/out Access Connections, wired connections will also fail in the same way!
I see many, many people on the web who are having similar problems.   Some of the threads go back more than a year with no resolution.
I have gone around and around with IBM/Lenovo support.  They have escalated the problem to a series of lead techs who never return phone calls.  Very disappointing, since the first tier techs are quite friendly and helpful - and generally return calls.
My next step is to go back to the nice man who handles escalations from the sales side, and ask him where to send this piece of junk.   It boggles my mind that Microsoft and Lenovo will put this kind of half-baked crap in the marketplace, and then do nothing to get it working.

  • Access connection loses WWAN settings when rebooting

After upgrade to version 5.31, Access connection loses my wwan location profile when rebooting.  It will revert to a profile named Mobile broadband. I can then edit this profile, but it will be lost when robotting next time.
I am using the Erricson wwan modem.
    Any ideas ?
    /MF

    Hi,
    try to make following:
    - delete all WWAN profiles in AC profile list
    - delete the WWAN driver
    * reboot
    - install the WWAN driver back
    * reboot
-create the WWAN profile, that you need and reboot again, so that you just verify, that the profile is saved.
Btw: in the past I had this same issue and you would not believe, but it was caused by the fact, that I have used old version of Power Management dirver and Power Manager.
By my previous issue was the fix following:
    - delete AC
    - delete WWAN
    - install:
    1) Power Maangement driver
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4GXPEG
    2) Lenovo System interface driver
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-67228
    3) Hotkey driver
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-68000
    4) Power Manager
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70601
    5) Wifi driver (optional, because I have used the old version of this driver)
    6) WWAN driver
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70000
    7) Access Connection
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67283
The installation order was the root cause in my case.
I would advice to use the latest versions from the Lenovo.com site, as if you are using one app with new and one with old version, then it might cause trouble.
Let me know, if that made any change.

  • Access Connections Ethernet Location Switching only saves one port at a time

Like many other people, I cannot get automatic location switching between two Ethernet networks to work properly.
I have two stored network locations;  one for home and one for work.  Both of these are set up as Best Available Network with both Ethernet and Wireless.
Under Tools - Location Switching, both networks are listed, and "Include Ethernet connections in automatic switching and prompt me to save Ethernet ports"  is checked.    However, in the details column, the current location has 1 saved port(s), and the other has 0 saved ports.    The saved port is always the one most recently connected.
If I go to Edit Saved Ports, only one location is listed, with the correct IP address and MAC address for the router.   If I connect at the other location, only that location is listed, again with the correct IP address and MAC address.
The router IP addresses are different (work is 192.168.0.1, and home is 192.168.1.254), and obviously the MAC addresses are different, so it should be possible for Access Connections to distinguish them.  Unfortunately the only "editing" that is possible is to delete the saved port.  I would be happy to add a saved port manually, but that is not an option.  In addtion, despite the "...prompt me to save Ethernet ports" being checked, I have never received a prompt.  Even if I delete the saved port, it resaves automatically next time without any prompt.
I have also tried setting up both locations as Ethernet only, but have exactly the same problem.
My T520 was supplied with Access Connections 5.85 preinstalled.  I tried upgrading to 5.97 in the hope that it had been fixed in the meantime.  Unfortunately it has not.
Access Connections is still marginally useful to me for automatic switching between Wireless and Ethernet, and for a simple manual switch of settings such as default printer, home page, and file sharing.  However, it would be very useful for the home and work locations to be autodetected and switched.
From the number of unresolved questions on this board on the same topic, it appears that this is a long standing deficiency with Access Connections.  Is there any chance of this being fixed?

I found from another bulletin board that ethernet location switching seemed to work OK with Access Connections 3.82, but stopped working with releases after that, and from my experience still does not work with 5.97
    http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=38514
    Two questions:
    1. Does anyone know if Access Connections 3.82 works with Windows 7?
    2. If so, where could I get a copy?  The oldest version on the Lenovo website appears to be 5.50
I will refrain from commenting on the necessity of going back to such an old version to recover basic functionality for this utility......

  • Access connect auto-switching problem (v5.62)

I have a problem with access connections in that it does not connect to the internet after automatically switching to a new network (proxy error perhaps?). I have to disconnect then reconnect to the network to get it to work (which kinda defeats the purpose). Has anyone had this problem or has a fix for this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    this situation sound familiar.
Make sure, that by bother Wifi profiles you have the option "Disable this wirelessa radio when switching to a different location" checked. You can find this in the profile configuration of AC.
Once you have this, go to the "Wireless Settings" tab and hit Properties. A new window will open and make sure, that you have the option "Power save mode:" configured to "Low (best network performance)". This way you should be fine with the location switchings.
Once this is done, go to the "Tools" tab of the main AC GUI and hit "Location switching". I assume, that you have this configured, but I just want to be sure, so here you make sure, that this is enabled and you have one (I would preffer the weeker) WIFI  profile selected in the "Preffered WLAN profile"
BTW: in case one of the profiles uses static IP, then the location switching will not work at all.
If all this is set and it still does not work, then I would say, that it would be goot to update all the application from lenovo.com.
    Cheers

  • Limitation of Access Connections' automatic location switching

    Hi there,
The automatic location switching feature in Access Connections on my Lenovo T61p seemed a great idea as it allowed me to automatically switch from wired to wireless connectivity as my laptop got taken in and out of its docking station.
However I have now turned it off for Ethernet (wired) connections because it disconnects me from the internet whenever I plug in my phone to sync it with my laptop. Apparently the phone sets up a LAN connection over USB which triggers an unwanted location switch.
This means I must now manually turn on and off wireless connectivity as I take my laptop in and out of its docking station which is inconvenient.
If Ethernet location switching could be set up to ignore (i.e. not switch to) a particular MAC address without blocking its connectivity my problem would be solved.
    BR,
    Mark

  • Location Switching - Access Connections 5.02

Okay here's my problem, I have 4 profiles set up in Access Connections because I travel between these 4 locations daily.  For some reason, A/C will not automatically switch to the correct profile.  It will start up with the last profile I used and try to associate to an access point that is not there.  I've tried many of the options including Location Switchng.  Am I doing something wrong?  I also have an x60 that has has the same issue (running XP Pro).  Any help will be appreciated.
    Thinkpad T400 6474-R2U
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Yes, one of my main complaints with Access Connections is that it does not appear to recognize when a location is no longer active.    The recommendation from the help desk was to disconnect before you leave a location, but I'm usually in too much of a hurry to disconnect.    Ended up shutting off the Location Switching feature, because even when I connected manually it would disconnect and attempt to connect at the previous location.    I've never had this issue with my older ThinkPad (T42), which would automatically recognize that I switched locations and connect successfully.
Full disclosure: Not a Lenovo employee, just someone with a X61 running Win XP SP2

  • Access Connections - IP doesn't change when switching locations

In my Access Connections setup, I have a mix of profiles; some using DHCP & some using static IPs.
I am experiencing problem when manually switching between profiles, where the IP address is not always changing as expected.
    For example:
    (all profiles are wired connections)
    Home (DHCP)
    IP address: Allocated by DHCP
    Subnet mask: Allocated by DHCP
    Default gateway: 10.0.0.1
    DNS servers: Allocated by DHCP
    Office 1 (Static)

On many occasions when switching from, say, "Office 2" to "Home"; the static IP address for Office 2 (10.10.140.202) is not being replaced by a new IP allocated from my home router (which, by the way is configured to allocate IPs from the pool 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.4; so the old IP address should not be valid on that network).
What is even more interesting is when you take DHCP out of the equation, for example when switching from, say, "Office 2" to "Office 1" (both of which are static IP profiles). The IP address 10.10.140.202 (Office 2) should be replaced by the static IP 203.18.x.x (Office 1) in all cases. However on many occasions it is not, and I'm left with the previous IP allocated.
Has anyone else noticed this behaviour?
I've found that by switching back and forth between profiles, it eventually resolves itself (although sometimes up to 3 or 4 switches is required).

AC 4.42 fail to assign a static IP when the OS is in spanish and the wireless device is Intel. In that case the problem was fixed with a patch that the support guys release.
In your case, I don't know my friend.
Have you tried using only Windows, without AC?

  • Location Switching and Access Connections 5.62

Under Location Switching, I enable the "Include Ethernet connections..." option.  I then see my profiles for LAN connections at the bottom of the list and I can checkmark them.  I can't however select them and change the order in the list.  Is there a reason for this?

    Hi,
in your situation, could you please make sure, that following Windows Services are started:
    - Windows Zero Configuration
    - Windows Presentation Foundation
    - Terminal Services
There are the services, that are fully needed for the correct workflow of Access Connection.
Also please make sure, that you are using the latest version of following apps/drivers, which are also needed for AC to work correctly:
