Access Connections Message
I have an X201 Thinkpad and Windows 7. A message keeps popping up on my screen telling me the status of my "Access Connections" - either that I am connected or that I am not connected. The problem is that it happens frequently and disrupts what I am doing as it has to be cleared before I can continue. Anyone know how to disable these messages? Thank you.
Hi,
if I catched correctly what you want to achieve, then do it like this:
Open AC and fo to "Tools" tab and open the "Global Settings".
Now go to "Notification" tab and UNcheck all the 3 options, that you see there.
Now confirm the changes and back in the "Tools" select "Iser Preferences" and make sure, that the middle option "Do not show balloon tips from the Access Connection system" is checked.
Confirm all changes and check, if this is what you are looking for.
If not, then let me know exactly what you are looking for and what is the issue. Maybe a screenshot would be good.
Cheers

T400 Vista vs Access Connections
(I hope this doesn't show up twice. My first try failed with an undecipherable server error)
Basically, wifi is unusable on my new T400 when running Vista Ultimate or Vista Business 64. If I run XP it works just fine. All 3 are stock Lenovo OEM installs from factory media.
My home wifi router is sitting close to the laptop. W/Vista, I can usually see it via "find" but usually can't connect. Occasionally after rebooting I can. Sometimes I can't even see it in find. W/XP on this T400, or with XP on my T61, it works as expected.
I suspect confiicts between Vista wifi management and Access Connections. With XP, one could solve this by unchecking the "let windows manage..." box in wifi properties. There doesn't seem to be such an option in Vista. I have tried disabling the windows "Zero Configuration" service (WLAN Autoconfig after SP1) but that doesn't help. Without that service, AC can't even turn on the radio. Worse (!) I can't turn the radio on manually via Fx-F5 either. Bluetooth yes, wifi no.
It looks like AC actually uses some/all of the WLAN Autoconfig function.
One thing I haven't tried yet is uninstalling AC and just using the Vista wifi management. Even if that works, it gives up a lot in terms of profile management.
I welcome any suggestions. As it stands, this shiny new T400 is unusable. It's a nice little machine, but this isn't the first of the frustrations....
Thanks,
Z

English Community Deutsche Community Comunidad en Español Русскоязычное СообществоUnfortunately, I need to use this thing on the road as well as at home, so a fixed IP address isn't an option since I won't know what subnet(s) will be in use. I experienced the same problems last weekend at two hotels and in the Denver airport, so it isn't my router.
I have done quite a bit more experimentation with this problem, without any resolution. I do notice that when it fails Vista thinks it is connected, but only locally. It has assigned a 169... address which I take to mean that DHCP has failed. Trying a command: ipconfig /renew fails with an error.
If I let it fail, then reboot, it usually will succeed as long as I try to connect to the same access point that failed before the reboot.
I tried uninstalling Access Connections, but Vista has the same problem(s) when it is doing the management! Failed connections, local only connections, and often success after a reboot. One interesting and nasty difference is that when using the Windows management w/out Access Connections, wired connections will also fail in the same way!
I see many, many people on the web who are having similar problems. Some of the threads go back more than a year with no resolution.
I have gone around and around with IBM/Lenovo support. They have escalated the problem to a series of lead techs who never return phone calls. Very disappointing, since the first tier techs are quite friendly and helpful - and generally return calls.
My next step is to go back to the nice man who handles escalations from the sales side, and ask him where to send this piece of junk. It boggles my mind that Microsoft and Lenovo will put this kind of half-baked crap in the marketplace, and then do nothing to get it working.

How to stop Access Connections from automatically connecting to WAP at turn on or restart?
I had a problem with my X200 winxp sp3 wireless connection. I got it working OK again but in the process I did something that changed the action of Access Connections when I turn on or restart the machine where it automatically connects to the WAP whereas before it did not do this, rather it required a manual connection. For the life of me I can't find the setting that controls this behavior...can anyone point me in the right direction.
thanks for any feedback
*Smith & Wesson...the original point and click interface*Might not answer completely, but what is your "profile" set to? I have a "profile" called Office that wll only use the "hardwire" LAN Connection. I have another "profile" called Mobile that will only use the Intel Wireless card, yet another that is "HSPA Modem" that will only use the AT&T wireless card.
Could it be that your "profile" is set to use just your Wireless Connection?
Just a thought -

I have an R61 with XP, SP3 installed. The underlying functionality of Access Connections appears to be working properly (I have access to both Ethernet and wireless using profiles previously established), but when I attempt to launch Access Connections (from system tray icon, Programs, etc.) I get the error message, "Access Connections has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience," and the option to send or not send an error report to Microsoft. This makes it impossible to create or edit location profiles. I first encountered this error several months ago with AC version 5.33 (might have also seen it under 5.3). Subsequently I have upgraded to version 5.50 and have the same problem. Today I uninstalled AC, restared, reinstalled ver 5.5 (from a fresh download), and restarted. I still encountering the problem.
Additional information: Norton Internet Security (2010) is installed. Microsoft and ThinkVantage patches are up to date.
Please recommend "next steps" in troubleshooting or a way to resolve this issue.
ThanksHmmm... could be a corrupt profile.
Try this.
1. Uninstall Access Connections (but don't delete the profiles)
2. After the reboot, open REGEDIT.
3. In the left pane, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SOFTWARE, then Lenovo
4. Still in the left pane, right click on Access Connection and choose export
5. Assign an appropriate filename and click Save (I suggest somewhere on the Desktop).
6. Right click on Access Connections again and choose delete.
7. Open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Program Files\Thinkpad\ConnectUtilities directory.
8. Delete any files in this directory.
9. Reinstall Access Connections v5.50
10. Try and create a profile.
If you still get an error trying to create a profile, then something else is broken. Be sure you have .NET 3.5 SP1 (it may be under optional downloads in Windows Update).
If it works fine, then you have a bad profile. Unfortunately, there isn;t an easy way to figure out which one other than try and error of delete profiles and trying one at a time.
To restore your profiles.
1. Unistall Access Connections. Reboot.
2. Double click the saved .reg file on your Desktop and answer Yes to merge it into the registry.
3. Install Access Connections. Reboot. -
ThinkVantage Access Connections cannot export .loc profile
Hello,
I've tried to export one of the location profiles in Thinkvantage AC. The function however is disabled in the profile maintenance window/menu. Access connection thus only allows importing, but no exports possible.
I've already tried using the Deployment tool for creating .loa files. But as this is binary gibberish, it's not much more useful to me than a registry export.
So, does anybody alternatively have a *.loc file at hand for public viewing? Couldn't find a single example on the web. (Much less in Lenovos documentation or web site...)
Thanks!
mario

ThinkVantage Access Connections Issue
I just gave up on this and uninstalled it so no conflicts on this now. (Not critical to me unless someone more knowledgeable thinks it should be!)
Rescue and Recovery: I tried reinstalling both the Thinkvantage version 4.21 and Rapid Restore 4.0 after disabling all virus protection and uninstalling whichever one was on at that time.
Thinkvantage version 4.21: Gave me tons of errors in the pre windows R&R environment so I gave up after rebooting a couple of times It told me there was a problem with factory.exe and the following files were "corrupt and unreadable":
netdgdxb.PNF
nettcpip.PNF
netvt86.PNF
netw940.PNF
net557.PNF
netand2.PNF
netbrdgm.PNF
netce2.PNF
NetSetup.Log
Rapid Restore 4.0: Reinstalled from c:\ibmtools\apps.
Ran both "Create Rescue Media" and Rapid Restore 4.0. "Create Rescue Media"seemed to work ok and burned a CD for me. Rapid Restore had a problem and closed on it's own, but then proceeded to prompt me through 17 CDs for a backup!?! Can I rely on these? Is there a way to check their integrity? Of course, a fix for the program seeming to end--but not really --would be great. Also, the program to create the factory product recovery disks is no longer in Start-Programs menu. The pre Windows R&R environment seems to load ok--no obvious error messages.
Finally, since I reinstalled the software is the backup to factory info gone from my computer? Is there a way to check? What is the relationship between this and Windows System Restore which is reserving 9Gb on my HD--do I need both?
Thanks in advance!

Z61m Access connection works but opens up to 15 minutes
Guys, what the prublem may be? It was OK for 2 years of use but now previously set profile in Access connection catches wireless LAN automatically at start up without problems but I can not manage it. It takes up to 15 minutes before Access connection window will appear on screen and it takes up to 10 minutes to react to any click inside that window.
Yesterday upgraded access connection to V5 of February 2009. Did not help. OS WinXP Prof.

Access Connections Not Starting Applications!
When switching to different wifi networks access connections start my applications without issue. However if I were to leave my home network and then reconnect later in the evening no applications start automatically.
It seems silly to have applications start only when switching to a different location when the intended use by consumers is to automatically run applicaitons according to the network they are connected to.
How do I ensure that my applications start automatically when connecting to the same network after a hard days work?
Access Connections v6DavidWS wrote:
By the way, I think the problem is more likely that Windows is controlling the wifi connections. Any idea how to designate Access Connections to be the program that controls all connections vs Windows?
Which version of Windows are you running? IIRC, it was necessary un-check "let windows manage" with XP. I don't believe that's an issue with Win 7.

Access Connections 5.20 VERY VERY SLOW, produces errors...
I just installed the latest version of Access Connections, 5.20, on my T400, and whenever I open it to do ANYTHING, it pegs the processor and responds extremely slowly (I'm talking 5 to 10 seconds to respond to a mouse click).
Also, after I installed it, I got the message: "The system contains incompatible wireless wan drivers"
What the heck is Lenovo doing out there? A bright shiny new version of Access Connections, and it makes my laptop even less usable than before!
Anyone having this problem?
- TimYes, please wait with updating AC cause the needed driver aren´t online till now.
Reverting back to AC 5.12 should reactivate WWAN function.

Access Connections refuses to run - X200 XP
Either something changed (an update?) or something I inadvertently did that has caused Access Connections to no longer run. The wireless connection is working fine and all of the Fn - x buttons work fine and I am not aware of any other issues with my X200. I just performrd a system update and the Access Connections driver was one of two recommended updates which I performed so presumably I have the latest version. Whether I start it via start menu, thinkvantage button, or from the wireless radio panel, the hard drive light flashes like something is being loaded but after a few seconds the flashing stops but no program starts nor is there any error message.
Hopefully someone here could shed some light on what might have happened and how to resolve it....any help will be much appreciated.

Download ThinkVantage Access Connections
Remove any and all versions of access connections-sometimes it will install on top of the previous version- (make sure to delete the application folder as well). Reboot and reinstall using the download from the link posted above (confirm it is the latest release). Access connections can be a little temperamental at times, usually the above steps will resolve the issue.

Access Connections does not accept Windows Wireless Config
Hi All,
We are rolling out RADIUS/802.1x wireless lan in our enterprise. The wireless settings are deplyed via AD grouo policy - no problems there.
I have an issue when i configure my access connections (ver 5.21) on my T61 machine. I configure AC to use Windows wireless security settings whcih are picked up correctly. The issues occur when i switch from this profile to another profile for exampls and vice versa. AC seems to think that i need to configure my wlan security settings each time i switch to that profile and wont connect. I get an error message:
The SSID 'WM2009' selected for this profile must be configured in windows. Click OK to configure the wireless settings in Windows'.
I know that the wireless settings are fine, as i can connect with the window wireless client fine - its just AC that has the issue.
Any ideas appreciated!Domain policy wireless profiles are not compatible with Access Connections.
The problem stems that Domain profiles are stored in a different part of the registry than a locally created WZC profile. Since these are part of the domain policy, they cannot be altered locally. Microsoft wouldn't provide Lenovothe encryption used (for obvious security reasons), so the domain policy based profiles can't be manipulated by Access Connections.
But we do provide an ADM template that can be used to do much the same things.
