How can I access hidden files on an ipod?

To access hidden files, there are a number of options ranging from terminal commands to third party software. Personally, I like the terminal command the best, because it prevents me from having to install more software than what I would like to. So go ahead and open up the Terminal application found inside the Utilities folder. Then type the follow commands verbatim or copy and paste them, hitting Enter after each to execute them.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
Now you should be able to open your iPod up in a Finder window and navigate to and through the previously hidden folders.
And when you are finished you can simply disable the setting again by typing the same thing as above, except that you will change TRUE to FALSE.

HT1199 Accessing hidden files on external hard drive

My external hard drive I've used to store my newspaper back issues for years has suddenly stopped accessing the files on the drive. I can see by the amount of storage that the files are there, but I can no longer see them, nor access them. There's still plenty of room on the drive, but now it thinks it's part of my Time Machine (though it's not the drive I use for system Time Machine backup) and won't let me do anything with the hard drive. And no, I did not do anything different with the drive than use it to store my back up newspaper issues (I make a weekly newspaper).
Any ideas how I can re-access the files on the drive?

Several thoughts:
If you double-click on the drive, do you see any files or folders? Does it say (at the bottom) how many items are in the drive? Can you see any of them?
What do you mean when you say it thinks it's part of your Time Machine?
Can you try running Disk Utility and verify the external hard drive? I wouldn't repair it yet, just in case you want to run a recovery utility later. I'd just like to see if Disk Utility gives you any errors when you try to verify the external drive.

I just got off the phone with Apple. Looks like the command has changed. See below for Mavericks (10.9)
In terminal:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To change back:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
To make change take effect:
killall Finder

How to remove my ex-company's server? Their IT set up hidden files to access computer anytime. I went thru all the Network

I worked for a company from my home. They had an IT company that would maintain ecverything thru the network and wirelessly.
I no longer work for the company but was able to keep the computer. Since I've left the company I have noticed they have accessed the computer. I have gone through all the steps to change the network, account settings, etc. But still - when I try to Update the Software I get an error message that I cannot access company.server. I don't want to access company.server. I want to wipe away them and their access to the computer. How can I find their hidden Network setup. I have all hidden files showing nd can't find it. Help. I want to use this computer but can't till I get those jerks' nose out! Thanks, Carole

I was afraid you were going to say that.
My desktop is 4-5 years old.
I've been messing with backing up programs onto my 200GB backup drive all evening.
I'm glad I only did work stuff on that computer and very little personal stuff.
I'll go check my disks, but they are very old. I'll have a ton of software updating on all the applications.
Would it work if I -
1st: boot-up from the original disc
2nd: Pull all files from the desktop computer onto my backup drive;
3rd: After I wipe out the computer just drag all the files and apps back upto the computer?
Or do I HAVE to reinstall all apps? Having old disks that will then need to be updated is not very fun.

Access Time Machine´s hidden files in Windows

Does anyone know how to access Time Machine´s hidden files in Windows? I tried using MacDrive v7... but in its help files... it says that the app itself (MacDrive) will not show files on a Mac-formatted drive, partion, volume, etc. if MAC OS X itself intentionally hides certain files. Confused?
If MAC OS X hides files in the Time Machine hard drive, MacDrive will hide them too.
I want to access some of my documents that are on my Time Machine external hard drive on my Windows computer.
Why? I took my Time Machine hard drive with me out of the country.

Are you anywhere near a place that sells Macs? If so, you might see if they will copy the files for you. A university might be another place to check to see if they have any Macs or anything running Unix and would be willing to help you out.

Look for a program called BlueHarvest. I'm not sure if it still works with Mountain Lion.
I believe your file server can be set up to handle the metadata files, but I suppose that would depend on the Server software and your IT staff.

Showing/ Accessing hidden folders and files

Hi,
In order to reinstal an application (Trend Micro sync), I first need to remove a selecion of hidden files that I used on Leopard to find under the account/library/ Application support.... They are "hidden folders and files". Under Lion I don't know how to set the finder to show them to me, especially as I don't remember the name !

JuhOS X lists all files and flags invisible ones. Some applications let you toggle invisibility, though this doesn't take effect until you restart the Finder.
The other thing to do is verify your drive with Disk Utility. Your computer isn't likely to be suddenly deciding to hide files, but aberrant behavior could be an indicator of a corrupt drive.

If you are able to Get Info on the folder of interest go the the very bottom section Sharing and Permissions.
You can gain access to this area by clicking on the lock in the lower right corner of the Get Info window.
Once you have input the admin password for the computer you should be able to edit the permissions on that file/directory.

Is it possible to restrict user access to files that need read/write permissions?

I am in the process of implementing electronic payments for a company's AP department. Dynamics GP (Great Plains) needs to create an EFT file that will get sent to the bank. After it is created, a script is run that sends the TXT file to the
bank and then renames the file extension to SNT. Users are logged on to the Great Plains server and have their own permission group.
Because the file is sending payment instructions, it is essential that users cannot modify or create a file with fraudulent payment instructions to the bank (incorrect bank account info).
With testing, I was able to save the file from GP to a folder where users cannot read it's contents, however the script cannot send the file to the bank without "read access" (it says not files available).
Any ideas for solutions? For instance, is it possible to make Great Plains and/or the script file "system" so that it can override the user profile's permissions?
I was also looking into the ability to hide the folder/files, but it appears users can choose to view hidden files and folders.

Hidden files on my desktop

Hi there - I've just purchased OSX 5.6 (which is the highest OS I can get for a pre Intel machine I believe) but before it comes I was just doing a general tidy up. When linking my computer to an old G4 PowerBook (using OS9 don't ask why), once mounted I noticed some folders on the desktop of my G5 that do not show up normally. (I can only view them after mounting the G5 PPC onto the G4 PowerBook and looking on there). The folder names are all proceeded by a "." +which I think indicates a hidden file+. I know that there normally are very important files that are purposely hidden and are vital to the OS (e.g. ".DS_Store" etc.) but these particular folders do not seem to be in that category after investigation.
I have a US client and I download lots of very large files via their FTP server using Fetch. When viewing the contents of the strangely named "hidden" folders that I can only see on the G5 once connected to the G4PB I then see very familiar names and enclosed folders from my US client containing around 40Mb of info each that cannot be accessed directly from my G5.
*My questions are:*
What are these files and why are they there - are they aborted efforts of previous FTP downloads?
Are they partial downloads waiting for more info - and if I delete them will it mess everything up?
Can I delete them directly from the G4 PowerBook, the only place I can I can see them?
If not can I purchase some software that will allow be to view hidden files on my G5PPC and evaluate and get rid of them?

The Fetch people have been back to me already - not bad huh? - and had the following to say:

They could just be an artifact of how the Mac OS X file system looks to Mac OS 9; it could be that they are not real copies of files, but just pointers (aliases) to other files on your disk, so deleting the folders and their contents might unexpectedly delete files you really want to keep on your Mac. I would make sure that is not the case before deleting a lot of them; you might want to delete one file you're sure you don't care about first.+
+And you might want to look at them on your G5 directly. You can display hidden files on your G5 by doing the following:+

Cannot find hidden files on Windows 8.1 after refresh

I stupidly did a Refresh on Windows 8.1 when having trouble with Clean Up disk not working. I know that i need to find the hidden files from other questions on here, and have checked the box for this, but how do i actually access these files, to get them back onto my Desktop. have lost Firefox history and bookmarks,my Avast Security,etc etc. I believe that i can retrieve them, is this right? I am not terribly computer literate but can follow instructions if they are kept simple. many thanks anyone.

Users is good. Try to drill down to:
C:\Windows.old\Users\''username''\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
Do you find anything there?

Writing to hidden file

I created a text document in a folder and made it hidden (using file properties).
This also seems to have made it read-only, but in the file properties, the read-only checkbox is not checked.
Is there a different procedure for writing to a hidden file, or does Java consider it to be read-only?

Is it only hidden, or also write-protected and/or a
system file?So Java does not have access to all files on a computer then (as mentioned in other treads)? Or does it have read-access to all files?

Hi folks, I have some hidden files and folders, which I was able to access before, and I used to click on the 'organise tab', view, Advanced Settings, show hidden files and folders, in order to hide or show the files.
Unfortunately there seems to be a problem, I just can't access my hidden files and folders any more, even when I go through this method.

First of all it would be nice from you if you post more informations about your notebook model and operating system. This should be done always to get a detailed answer.
Anyway, I never heard about such a problem but make sure that every files will be displayed:
Start Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View and enable the following options:
-Hidden files and folders: Show hidden files and folders
-Hide protected operating system files (this should be disabled > without mark).
Furthermore can you find these missing files using Windows search?
If not I assume the files are deleted from somebody or due a virus. :(

Hidden Files in Volume/Temp

I've accidently saved some web images into a folder named temp, in Volumes. I thought I was saving them to a network folder I have named Temp, but it turns out this is a hidden folder.
I don't want to have to re-do these images, and I wonder if there's a way to move these files to the desktop so I can access them?
Can I type a command line in the Terminal, similar to a DOS command?
I see there's a command you can type in Terminal to show hidden files, but I wonder if there's a simpler way to do this?

The easier, non-Terminal, way is to go to the Finder and then to Go -> Go to Folder... and then enter in the pathname to the folder in question and click OK.
For example: /Volumes/temp
This will open up the folder, revealing the files you saved there.
You can then safely drag them out to the Desktop or folder of your choosing.

I am trying to set up a crontab job to run automatically when I log in, and want to put my original .login file back in my home dir.
Anyone know how to restore a single hidden file? I don't really want to restore my entire Home directory structure.
