Access iPhoto photos with Finder?

Is there a way to use Finder to find, open, share, etc. photos in my iPhoto folder? Or is the only way to access them through the program itself?

Longer Answer:
iPhoto (and similar apps, like Aperture, Lightroom, Picasa) are designed to replace the Finder for anything you do with your Photos. (Like AddressBook with your addresses, iTunes with your Music etc).
Also, these apps - espcecially iPhoto and Aperture - make massive use of virtualisation in how they work, so finding files within the Library is difficult, as there is no necessary connection with how things are laid out in the iPhoto Window and how they are arranged on the Hard Drive. Accessing the files directly also any edits or metadata that you have added since import.
Anything you need to do can be done via iPhoto, and done faster and more easily too.
Want to edit with another applicaton: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Cant access my iphoto library with finder

    Hi everyone,
i installed ilife 08 and since that, i cant find my photos with finder/pictures. I only have the iphoto logo
    Someone can help me ?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

  • Can no longer print selected iPhoto photo with HP printer

iPhoto 09. Cannot print selected iPhoto photo with HP printer. I select the photo from iPhoto Library, go to File>print. The screen for Print comes up with another one on top of it that is blank but with text "Print...Processing 1..OK".  Clicking OK prints from that screen "Print, Processing page 1" (on correct 3x6 photo paper in black!).
I have run Apple Software Update. Run Permissions with problems (one: "Permissions differ on Library/Printers/h...". Have reinstalled iPhoto which has left one icon on Dock and 3 on desktop: iPhoto 07-27-19.app; iPhoto.app; iPhoto Library that I don't know what to do with with them, so just use the one on the dock which opens iPhoto Library.
Believe I read that after reinstalling iPhoto, a plug-in (possibly third party plug-in for HP?) must be installed. I have updated my HP printer to latest driver.
Would you advise how I can print photos in my iPhoto Library again, and also get those iPhoto icons off my desktop which only confuse me.  Thank you for your prompt attention.
    Out-of-patience Great Gramma

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • I can't access edited photos with iphoto

I am new to iphoto 08.
I have preferences set up to edit iphoto images with photoshop CS3. After editing a photo, I use the option save in same folder but iPhoto does not show the edited photo, just the unedited photos. I can see the location of the new photo using spotlight (the path indicates that the photo is in the same folder as the unedited photos in iPhoto) but am unable to see the photo in iPhoto.
    Any ideas? Thanks, David

    David:
    Maybe this will help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • HT1338 How to restore iphoto photo with Time Machine?

I am trying to restore a single photo in iPhoto from Time Machine.
I open up iPhoto, then upen up Time Machine. When Time Machine launches, it opens up my desktop, not iPhoto.
I have seen videos of people doing this, but I cannot get Time Machine to open up iPhoto.
    What am I doing wrong?

Apple used to support restoration of photos via the iPhoto interface with Time Machine, but has halted this support. I believe the reason was the feature was corrupting people's libraries, but I cannot be certain. Your options here are to restore either the entire library or manually go into the library in the Finder and use Time Machine to browse through file histories that way. Alternatively you can access the Time Machine backup directly in the Finder and manually copy the needed files out of it (do not restore in this way, but instead copy to the Desktop and then re-import the image as a new photo).

  • Access the photo with ArchiveLink to include in a smartform

We are trying to create an employee badge process within SAP. We have utilized ArchiveLink to store the employee photo, but we still need to find a way to access the photo and print it on a Smart Form. Has anyone had any experience with printing an image from archivelink on either a Smart Form or SAPscript form?

  • Unable to access iPhoto Library with iPhoto 6

I purchased and installed iLife 06 as a replacement for iLife 04, and now I can't bring up any of my photos. The program tells me it's unable to upgrade my old photo library because the "user does not have access. If possible, repair permissions..." I went to my Disk Utility and ran the "repair permissions" for my entire hard drive but no change.
Is there a special technique for repairing permissions for the iPhoto Library folder alone? Also, the program tells me that the "path of the item that failed" includes "Memstick.ind." I found something called "Memstick.ind" in my Pictures folder and tried to trash it, but it's locked. How can I get rid of it?
Thanks for any suggestions. I'm hoping I won't have to reinstall iPhoto 04, even though I was happy with it.

    Hi Cap,
" Unable to upgrade this library because the current user does not have access"
-First make sure your Pictures folder has the correct permissions for you, the user. Do this by highlightling the Pictures folder, hit Command i to bring up the info pane.
Make sure you are the owner and have read and write permissions. Click the button at the bottom of the window.
-If your problem is a locked file/files follow the info in the following Apple kb

I just installed PSE 11.  I would like to use it as an external editor through iphoto.  When I choose a photo in iphoto to edit in PSE 11, PSE 11 opens, However the picture does not launch in pse 11.

You have to dig down to find the correct "external" editor - Adobe has hidden it - search the forums for exact instructions

  • Accessing/copying photos in iPhoto

I am so frustrated!!!!  I am trying to copy and paste photos that I have uploaded from my iPhone 4S (7.1.2) to my Macbook Pro (10.9.4) using iPhoto (8.1.2).  My iPhoto app came with my Mac.  I just tried to upgrade to the latest in the Apple Store but for some reason it would not offer me that option despite all efforts and coming at it from various directions.  I got to where it looks like I should be able to and then no options available - so I don't know if this is a version issue or not.  But I don't think it is.
I am trying to send photos as attachments to Gmail emails.  I can send emails with photos still on my phone but I don't want to type everything on my phone.  I can send individual photos using share and the Mac "Mail" but I don't use that for anything and don't want to.  I just want to be able to find, copy, and attach photos I have imported from my phone to my Mac.  They are not visible using Finder, at least with the "IMG_0xxx" photo id that is in iPhoto.  I have tried to go into various folders and the iPhoto library but no joy.  I just can't seem to find them.
Must be something simple if I have just missed it, or, based on my recent last two years of love/hate/despise relationship with all things Apple, it may not in fact be possible.  I try to just up to date on software versions but each one seems to break more things than it fixes.
    Any advice help is appreciated.

Terence - thanks for your kind words about how I don't get it.  I am not trying, nor do I want to be forced, to use iPhoto to send my photos via an application OR service I prefer not to use.  If that is the only way to do so, then it is my decision to accept that or not, and indeed, stop using it.  But I paid for it and I prefer that it play nice with the rest of the world.  I understand why it is easier to develop a set of compimentary software (whether it is a service running an application on a server or as an application running on my Mac) in a closed system way. Your terminoloty of "service" and "application" are not universally accepted and not widely used by all the users out there.  I have bona fides as system designer and developer but I won't assume that would make any difference to smug people out there and was there when the client/server model was initially developed and since turned into to server-based iCloud-type database services.  BTW I don't like having my sensitive personal info on a machine I can't lock up for myself but I am just paranoid and naive.   But I am fine being able to copy and access my photos with other applications that run on my personal Mac, and also to use the "service" that Gmail provides running their application via a client/server model.  I don't like Apple changing the rules to force me to use iCloud as a service to replace my Contacts application running on my iPhone and Mac.  Sure it is handy to have iCloud do that but I would prefer to have the option to keep local control of my contacts and calendar and there was no reason for Apple to force me to use iCloud except for other business reasons that benefit them more than it does me.
I did thank you for providing me the info to allow me to do exactly what I wanted to do.  I don't find iPhoto to be either intuitive nor well documented which is why there are people like you out there that have fun helping ignorant people like me to ask questions for answers that should be provided by iPhoto documentation.  I did spend over an hour trying to find the answers you gave me and only came here as a last resort.  Believe me, it is not fun to have to do that with everything Apple (and Microsoft, et al).  One of my hats in previous jobs was to manage the documentation process for far more arcane software than this.  The standard was that a user should be able to understand how the software works without jumping through hoops like going to a support group to be put down by those who have the time to sort all this out full time (or during the other time that other people use to have a life).
I am used to using Gmail, and Outlook before that, and Yahoo before that.....  I am not a power user.  I don't want or care to.  I use iPhoto because it is what came with my Mac and what works with my iPhone.  It is a very closed architecture and this is not the only frustration I have had with this model, especially with the lack of complete support for the products.  I won't bore you with the wide and numerous problems people smarter than me have had with Apple products.  And in any case, swearing at software is a long and distinguished process.  I am not the first and not the last.  At least I was only thanking you for your help rather than swearing at you.  I don't appreciate your condescending attitude for poor schmucks like me though.
Old Toad, regarding your advice, I actually have done and abandoned using Mail to go through my Gmail account.  I don't really care for two layers of software trying to do something simple like this.  And why should I?  Mail may be an application rather than a service but from a user interface point of view they look and feel the same and you have to follow their rules of the application or service design.  Gmail is not a perfect service but at least I know how to use it for my email.  I don't really want to have to use Mail in additon, especially when I can access the Gmail service on any platform I happened to have to use at the moment. Mail is limited to my Mac since it is a Mac only application (I'm sure you will correct me if I am wrong on that).  To each his/her own though.  I do appreciate that you guys did help me and that I have the options to use the systems (whether as a service and/or application) in a way that best suits my skills and preference.  I won't knock how you prefer to do your mail and photos.  It is just not what I want to do if given the option.  BTW - I have several reasons to wean myself away from the "service" that Google provides but that is not an Apple application issue.

  • Organizing iPhoto Library in Finder

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to better organize my iPhoto library in Finder. Right now, the automatic setting, it is organzing them by year, month, day. I dont know if there is a way to have them organized in Finder by the albums you create in iPhoto itself. The way it is in Finder makes it really difficult to reach them outside of iPhoto ( to send them thru attachments in alternative emails or AIM it is necessary to access the photos thru finder- if this is wrong maybe someone knows, but if its not, than the way the photos are currently set up makes it difficult to pull them out quickly). Thanks for the help,
    Courtney.
Oh I am using iPhoto 5
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO 'ORGANIZE' iPHOTO VIA THE FINDER!! You will corrupt your library and then have a big mess to get your pictures back. Do some more browsing in these discussions and you will find many tales of woe from people who messed with iPhoto via the Finder.
When you want to send attachments etc it is much simpler to export a copy of the picture to the desktop (which also allows you to make it a more email-friendly file size) and then navigate there to attach it. You can also make a selection in iPhoto and then hit the email button which opens your email program with attachments ready made.

  • Can I access iphoto from windows

I have a imac 27" (2011) running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4.  I have installed Parallel and running windows 7 because the photo program I use (Paint shop pro) doesn't come in mac format.  Can I access iphoto photos from the windows side without having to have them loaded in a directory in windows as well.

You may be a better man then I am, Gunga Dinn!
So far all of my attempts at keeping systems in sync have ended up in dismal failures.
My suggestion is to settle on one platform. It will make things easier in the long run.
After reading reviews on Pain Shop Pro, I don't find it anything to get excited about at all.
I think rather then using iPhoto on the Mac, you should really look at Aperture. It is far more powerful that iPhoto at editing photos plus it provided DAM capablitities also. To me it appears to be a more powerful tool then  Paint Shop Pro also.

  • Accessing NFS mounts in Finder

I currently have trouble accessing NFS mounts with finder. The mount is O.K. I can access the directories on the NFS server in Terminal. However, in Finder when I click on the mount, instead of seeing the contents of the NFS mount I only see the "Alias" icon. Logs show nothing.
I am not sure when it worked the last time. It could well be that the problem only started after one of the lastest snow leopard updates. I know it worked when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
    Any ideas?

    Hello gvde,
Two weeks ago I bought a NAS device that touted NFS as one of the features. As I am a fan of Unix boxes I chose an NAS that would support that protocol. I was disappointed to find out that my Macbook would not connect to it. As mentioned in previous posts (by others) on this forum, I could see my NFS share via the command line, but not when using Finder. I was getting pretty upset and racking my brain trying to figure it out. I called the NAS manufacturer which was no help. I used a Ubuntu LiveCD (which connected fine). I was about ready to give up. Then, in another forum someone had mentioned the NFS manager App.
After I installed the app and attempted to configure my NFS shares, the app stated something along the lines of (paraphrasing) "default permissions were incorrect". It then asked me if I would authenticate to have the NFS manager fix the problem. I was at my wits end so I thought why not. Long story short, this app saved me! My shares survive a reboot, Finder is quick and snappy with displaying the network shares, and all is right with the world. Maybe in 10.6.3 Apple will have fixed the default permissions issue. Try the app. It's donationware. I hope this post helps someone else.
