Access MP motherboard SATA ports when using Apple RAID card

I asked this question in another topic and thought I'd have better luck in a separate topic.
I will soon be the proud owner of an early 2008 3.2 G Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card. I have been given a lot of great advice by the regulars to this topic area who gave me an idea that I wanted to confirm would work.
Since the internal HDs are connected through the RAID card, that leaves the iPass connector free to connect 4 more SATA drives to the motherboard. The suggestion was made to use an iPass to 4 x SATA cable to gain access. But where to attach and mount the drives? If not the optical bay, the only alternative is outboard, but what to do with the cable? I also learned here that there are two more SATA ports on the motherboard, and Newer Technology makes a cable that attaches to both and mounts in an empty PCI slot hole. Very neat.
So why not combine the two? I am not certain, but it appears that the connector genders are such that you could combine an iPass to 3 x SATA cable attached to the motherboard to a pair of the Newer Tech cables, then mount them to the PCI doors enabling the user to attach 4 more SATA drives with suitable for another RAID, boot Camp or whatever. Does this seem a reasonable solution? Would love some feedcak on this. Thanks.

It is not uncommon to have trouble installing, cloning, or booting from a PCIe card - though the Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD is one of the reliable ones, still, you should install the OS first on SATA II normally, then move the SSD to its new home.
The fact the SSD works on the ODD port - have you asked or looked for firmware update or anything from Sonnet and what they have to say?
With three PCIe cards to contend with, they may interact - not unheard of - and the USB3 may need drivers first to work?

Anybody using Apple RAID card in a Boot Camp system?

I can guess windows would not see/be able to use any disks/volumes controlled by the array, but I wondered if somebody had a system with :
1 - Mac Pro w/ 4 HDDs
2 - 1st drive with SL and Boot Camp 64 bit Windows (Vista or 7)
3 - Apple Mac Pro RAID card
4 - other 3 HDDs in a RAID 5 or 0
Is this possible? Is this just crazy (I do need Windows for some stuff).
If any experience can you also tell me what happens to the array when you went from 10.5 to 10.6 or Vista to Win 7?

Even though it's not the answer I wanted thanks for finalizing it for me. I think I'll give SoftRAID my 1st shot because they say it will let me do separate dual-boot disk.
Contrary to public opinion, not everything is possible with computers. They to have their limits.
One thing I hate about Apple's website is when I do not feel I got the definitive answer with a responder's first answer and then their next shot solves it for me, but I cannot seem to give them a solved credit.
You should have the possibilities to 'mark as helpful' and 'mark as solved' and also to mark the whole thread as 'solved'.

Work Around Help: Apple RAID Card & Boot Camp

-Hello and thanks for taking the time to read my post and possibly provide me with a solution.-
I have the newest Mac Pro (early 2009) and the apple RAID card.
I want to be able to run boot camp with winXP, but it appears from talking with tech support that the 3x SAS 15,000 rpm drives (RAID 5 config) with the RAID card does not support boot camping. I guess the RAID card is still unsupported through windows/boot camp?
I have a 1tb 7200 rpm drive spare.
Is there a work around to get boot camp to run natively (no virtual machines via Parelles or VMware Fusion please) on my computer? What options for running boot camp do I have?
Can anyone out their solve my issue?

Unfortunately, Apple does NOT support Boot Camp when the Apple RAID card is installed.
What I would suggest is to remove the Apple RAID card and insert a SATA hard disk into the Mac Pro. At this point, you can install Mac OS on it (using the Apple DVD) and then Boot Camp.
I know this is not the solution you are looking for but its the best I have
This is why I did not purchase the Apple RAID card and I cannot recommend it to users that would like to install Boot Camp.

New drives help for APPLE RAID Card RAID Redo

I've been happily using an Apple 3,1 MacPro with Apple RAID Card installed and connected to 4-500 GB Apple OEM drives. I'd like to redo my setup and replace the Apple drives with bigger drives. Someone said I could only use up to 2 TB drives - is this correct?
Has anyone done this or anything like it using Seagate Drives that are not Apple OEM. Will that work OK or will the Apple RAID Card want to see Apple OEM drives? Apple sells 2TB Seagates, but they cost a lot compared to non-OEM drives, but will cheaper generic Seagate Barracuddas work OK in every way?
Also, after accomplishing this upgrade, I'd like to upgrade this machine to the latest Lion and possibly even Moutain Lion System Software. Any issues perceived?
To reiterate, I'd like to increase my storage to the max in my Early 2008 MacPro3,1 which has the Apple RAID Card utilizing a RAID5. This is spec'd at "4 - 3.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA) controllers" but no mention is made of what the MAX Size drives that will be addressed by the RAID Card.

I thought it was an oxymoron to be using Apple RAID card, and to be happy.
It does not support drives larger than 2.2TB
Seagate's just seem to be more trouble. Any enterprise drive should do.
If you really really need RAID5 then maybe this card is useful, otherwise, no.,
There is much less than 300MB/sec x 4 in bandwith, they are shared and not independent, but the total is more like 800MB/sec maximum. Less overhead and other factors comes in more like 700MB/sec total max. \
SSDs have come a long way.
Use a PCIe cards to manage 2 x SSDs of 500GB up to 1TB
Use Disk Utility or SoftRAID 4 to manage 2-4 drive mirror or stripe arrays
10.8.4 has a bug that interferes with using 3TB and larger drives, just introduced bug.
This is the FIRST time there have been limits on drive size. And Apple RAID card. Seems the card is not getting updated firmware to address the need for larger drives. For those using SAS it is also a viable candidate.
SSD on its own to hold the system. 4 x 2TB WD Black for data and media storage. 4 x SSDs for scratch and graphic catalogues and media... all depends what your goal and use and type of programs.
No you do not need to use Apple's.
I cannot vouche for or seen someone doing so but I would hope that WD RED series would be suitable.

CAN the Mac Pro deep-sleep with the Apple Raid Card?

So, reading through previous posts, there seems to be a problem (or 'feature' to charge the battery?) that prevents the Mac Pro from sleeping when the Apple Raid Card is installed.
Can users owning this setup corraborate? Is this indeed the intended way to work?

as far as I know, deep sleep is only available for portable machines. if you meant regular sleep I cant help you because I haven't got a RAID card.
edit: I may have confused deep sleep with safe sleep… sorry.

Has anyone experienced the loss of audio when using Apple TV when it has been working fine?

I can't get any audio through my reciever when using Apple TV. It's been working fine until a week ago. I've check my reciever, unplug the TV, and Apple TV as described but nothing. I switch to my Direct TV input and I can get audio when not using ATV. I've tried most everything I've read on blogs but nothing. One of those "pull your hair out" issues. I have some information for you that can help you troubleshoot this issue:
If you can see video but can't hear sound
If Apple TV is connected to a receiver, make sure the receiver is turned on.
Make sure the input setting you've selected on your receiver matches the input you have your audio cables connected to. See the documentation that came with your receiver for more information.
Make sure the volume on your TV or receiver is turned up and isn't muted.
Check whether you can hear sound while playing video only. Also, check whether you can hear audio feedback while clicking through menu options.
If you're connected to the HDMI port on your TV and Apple TV, make sure your TV supports audio through its HDMI port. The HDMI ports on some older TVs support only video.
If you are using HDMI audio, try disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable.
If you're connected to the HDMI port on your TV and Apple TV, make sure your TV is setup to receive audio from HDMI. For some TV's this is automatic, but for others there is a choice between digital and analog (for HDMI audio, choose digital). Read more about HDMI audio.
Try the other audio outputs on Apple TV to see if they work.
If possible, try using different audio cables.

Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
Are you using iCloud?
For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account.

Eg I want to listed to my music through apple tv (which is in the living room) and beam it to my airplay speakers in my bedroom, at the moment I would have to go back into the living room to see my tv screen to select the bedroom airplay speakers, then go back upstairs to listen to the music. YOu should be able to select the speakers in app without looking at the TV screen. Hopefully that makes sense!?!

What do you mean exactly? Are you wanting to output the audio to your iPhone while say watching a video on your Apple TV? If so, I'm afraid it's not possible. When using Apple TV the mirror feature works fine on my iPhone, my daughters ipad and my wife's ipad mini but on my ipad I can only get certain bits to work ie photos, you tube but it will not mirror home screen or photos albums

The First generation iPad does not support mirroring.

Everywhere that I've checked it is not possible to do this. I would like to even do this using the vkb. I hate having to stretch my thumb all the way up just to send a message. It's messaging, not a report or email. Seems backwards. Hopefully some day Apple can add this option.

While written for the iPhone, the troubleshooting below can help resolve issues with your iPad's camera, as well.
Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:
Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.
