Access photos from anywhere other than iPhoto?

Hey everyone,
Admittedly I am an iPhoto noob, but I am not a Mac noob or a photo noob. That being said, a friend suggested I use iphoto for all my photo organization and I'm having trouble with that from the very beginning. I usually use Bridge or just a regular file structure. I can access my photos from anywhere and I am proficient in Photoshop and Lightroom.
I am testing the iPhoto platform out for my future use, but I can't get past the first flaw...
Why is it that I cannot access my photos from outside of iPhoto? This seems counter productive...
Can anyone enlighten me please? I don't want to read the whole .PDF manual on iPhoto.
Thank you for your time!

If you see the first gap in your knowledge as a flaw in the software, you might as well give up now. You're resisting it. That said, if you have Lightroom I have no idea why you would want to use iPhoto - and using both makes no sense. Adding Bridge to the process just muddies everything else further. But then if you have Lightroom and Photoshop I have no idea why you would be using Bridge, or accessing photos via the File system, but you're proficient int hose so I'm sure you know that.
iPhoto is a consumer level application. It's aimed at the chap with a point and shoot or maybe a phone. It has the power to fix up the shot and share it easily. It can do more than that, of course, but that's the target market. It's serves that market very well, mind you, offering Raw processing, non-destructive editing and so on, and in a very easy to use package, but if you're proficient with Lightroom, Bridge and Photoshop then it has very little to offer you. It's a tack hammer beside a team of sledgehammers.

But you can, of course.  For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4491
Then there's the external edit facility. This would make Bridge redundant. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
But really, it's not for you.

  • Import photos from source other than iphoto

Is there a way to import photos to imovie from a source other than iphoto or photo booth? I have a cd of pics that i'd like to use but I'd rather not import all the pics to iphoto if I don't have to.
    thanks

Wow; I can drag the photos from the Finder directly into my project. I actually tried this, but I tried dragging them into the lower pane with all the source clips. That won't work, but if you drag the photos into the top pane where your edited work is it magically adds the photo(s). Thanks for the tip!

  • Is there a way to access 11i from outside other than Self service?

Is there a way to access 11i from outside other than Self service?
I could connect any application from inside the firewall (basically router) and can not access screens from outside. Eventhough port forwarding 80 allows us upto initial screen, it does not go further.
    Any workaround/suggestions

    Hi Jiltin,
If you can migrate your forms server into Forms Listener Servlet. This will allow you to use forms outside firewall provided atleast one port(assuming yours 80) is open.
Ref to the M.Link Note 201340.1 for how to setup forms listener servlet.

  • IPAD2 since yesterday seems to have stopped allowing transfers of photos from anything other than another Apple product and comes up with the message2 itunes will no longer sync photos....which are not transferred from a Mac? Looks as if there is a prob

IPAD2 since yesterday seems to have stopped transfers of photos from non Mac equipment. I use dell with ITunes cloud facility.
Any ideas or are we to await Mac correcting the software?

Okay, can someone please give a useful answer? Thanks! I have been experiencing exactly the same problem for some time now, and it is very annoying. Furthermore, I would like to point out to Chris CA that there is absolutely nothing ambiguous about the original post.
So here is the deal. I used to be able to burn CDs with iTunes that played back fine on both my car and home stereo. After some update, and I am very sorry but I really do not remember which one, as I am just a user and not a programmer and just want something that works, which in the end Apple used to be all about, and therefore do not keep track of all the updates, CDs won't play back on my car stereo. Nothing else changed, still the same brand of CDs (even the same stack!), still the same car stereo, and still the same 2007 MBP. So by simple deduction I conclude it must be a software update. And I do not care what the exact cause is, I just want a fix!
I'd like to apologize for my tone in the above, but it is just a very annoying problem, even more so because it seems nothing is being done about it. Thanks for your answer in advance!

  • All photos uploaded since iLife 11 upgrade arent visible anywhere other than iphoto itself.

Since installing iLife 11 onto my 2007 iMac I cannot find photos that have been uploaded since the upload when trying to export them onto an external hard drive or upload them to an external photo printing site.
They arent in the HD drag and drop box either.
This means I have lost all the functions I use iphoto for!
    Please help!

  • Other than iphoto

Anyone know any good photo suite apps other than iphoto that i can still use to take photos off of the iPhone?

Well, I've not had any success getting photos off the phone, other than mailing them to myself, because when I look in iPhoto and Image Capture, the phone seems to be recognized, but it always says there are "No Images", even though there are over 50 images on the phone.
Frustrating. Anyway, to answer your question, try using Image Capture. Maybe you'll hve better luck. It's free, and included in your /Applications folder.

I've just found that three movies I've bought from iTunes on on my iPad are not showing up on Apple TV or anywhere other than that iPad.  What's up with that and will I lose these films if I reset this iPad?

Thanks.  The reason this has become an issue is that I recently bought a new Macbook Air that the iPad is not synced to.  The one is was synced to was stolen.  If I want to sync this iPad to the new Air, won't it be wiped before I'm able to copy these films or am I wrong about that?

I have real a lot of posts that say to click Command+Option while opening iPhoto and this will open the Photo Library Repair window, but... this is not happening.
Be sure you're holding the correct keys and that you're holding them long enough. Depress them before clicking on iPhoto and don't let go until the menu shows up.
If you don't want to lose those photos, make a back up now. Hopefully it's not too late.

  • Denying access from hosts other than localhost

I would like to prohibit access to Directory Server from hosts other than the localhost:
I am doing this from Administration Console. On the server node I set the ACI:

But the access is still allowed. What is wrong?

  • How do I restore photos from iPhone 5 to iPhoto. I erased all my events in iPhoto by mistake so need to sync them phone upstream to lions 10.7....not even apple support could help??

How do I restore photos from iPhone 5 to iPhoto. I erased all my events in iPhoto by mistake so need to sync them phone upstream to lions 10.7....not even apple support could help?? I plug my phone into iPhoto and it sees the camera roll but none of my event so I can move them back into iPhoto

Your photos are gone.  When you synch your phone with iPhoto, the actual picture file does not synch, rather is is a very small thumbnail file suitable for viewing on the phone, but of such small resolution that it's useless for anything other than viewing on the phone.  In any case, Apple makes no way for you to retrieve these thumbnail file.
If you deleted photos from iPhoto, your only hope is if you have Time Machine or another backup that might have had those photos.  Are they perhaps still in the "Trash" within the iPhoto app?

  • When I edit and/or delete photos from an album in iPhoto is there a way to make that what happens in the folder in finder?

When I edit and/or delete photos from an album in iPhoto is there a way to make that what happens in the folder in finder? I am new to Mac. I've updated the operating system and iPhoto.

If your iPhoto Advanced preference pane is setup like this
all photos you import into the library are COPIED into the library.  Thus those photos in the folders outside of iPhoto are redundant and can be deleted to save space on your hard drive. There no need to keep those copies in the folders.
If you do have your advance preferences set as shown above you can access your photos for use outside of iPhoto according to the following User Tip by Terence Devlin which is the best treatise on how to access photos (for use outside of iPhoto):  How to Access Files in iPhoto.  Otherwise you access your photos from within iPhoto.

  • Can't access photos from prior tobut 1/27/10.  Thu ide to desktop.  Giant "!" appears.

Can't access photos from prior to 1/27/11.  Thumbnails appear, but can't open, email or move them to desktop. Giant "!" appears.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

It seems I must click "Edit," and then "Crop," and then expand the box to the fullest size. I don't have enough time to undo this auto-crop with all 250 photos. Any suggestions?

    @SuperMan
I noticed this as well when navigating through the photo gallery on my iPhone.
If you (and he) are asking about iPhone operation then you are in the wrong place - this is the iPhoto for Mac forum - there are forums for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch as well as iPhoto for IOS -
I do not see any cropping in iPhoto on the Mac for either camera or iPhone photos (I use PhotoStream with auto import to get my iPhone photos to iPhoto on my Mac) - and given the way iPhoto works it is really not possible to have auto-cropping - the only thing that I see even close to that is that when you select edit ==> drop the default crop is slightly smaller than the photo - but unless you accept that nothing is changed and the photo is exactly as imported

  • IPhone 6plus camera freezes when trying to take photos from within other apps

Hi,  8.1 6Plus,   my regular camera turns black screen when trying to take photos from within other apps or sometimes between photos in the regular camera app.  I can still take a photo, I just have no idea what I'm seeing or taking a picture of.   Then when I press retake (in other apps) the screen comes back on and it works.   Its annoying more than anything else.   Any ideas? Have done the whole close apps/restart process.
    Thanks!

What version of iPhoto? How much disk space did you have before deleting things?
    Regards

  • Is it possible to drag photos from CDs to an iPhoto album?

Is it possible to drag photos from CDs to an iPhoto album?  When I try, it creates a new event and also a "sub-album" in the original album.
I am trying to import old photos for my daughter's senior video and senior yearbook page.  I don't want to create a lot of new "events" in iPhoto.

Drag them from the CD to a folder on the Desktop.  Then you can drag that folder into the open iPhoto window onto the Albums title in the left hand pane.  That will create an single Event and album with the same name as the folder. If you don't want the album just drag the folder anywhere into the open iPhoto window except the left hand pane.
