Access Points keep associating and disassociating from WLC

I have numerous access points, both 3502 and 3602's that are connected to Cisco 2960s POE switches that will disassociate and then reassociate themselves with the WLC.  The WLC and access points are running 7.4.110.0.  The particaular Cisco 2960s POE switch in this case is running 12.2(55)SE3, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1).   This is becoming a widespread issue.

When the AP recovers, what is the physical up time and WLC association time.
Now if your AP(s) regularly reboots then I'd consider you test the cable runs using the on-board TDR feature of your switch.

  • Access point associated and deassociated from WLC

    HI,
i have 3 AP AIR-LAP1042N-E-K9 in the same place (Event at down town) but they Sometimes the APs even disassociate from the controller temporarily, and i see the below errors on Prime infrastructure 2.0
Load threshold violation reported by 802.11b/g/n interface of AP <apname>, connected to controller <controllerIP>
Interference threshold violation reported by '802.11b/g/n' interface of AP
Coveraged threshold violation reported by 802.11b/g/n interface of AP <apname>, connected to controller <controllerIP>
what these problems and how to solve it
    Thanks,
    Ahmed

After these error done i see that error 802.11b/g/n interface of AP is down :controller.
please as example up time is 4:00 hours and join time changed every time may be once 12 m:15 sec, may be in another time 1h:15 m:20s
please feed me back these problem related to number of connected client because i monitor when the client exceed on AP more than 25 the AP deassociated from WLC.  kindly find loggs from AP. wait your feed back.

  • Access points dropping up and down

I have anywhere from 5-20 access points drop up and down throughout the day out of a total of around 200. I am currently trying to go through and figure out why we our access points are having some many issues and how I might be able to resolve them.
One of the logs that I commonly see is:
AP 'exp-p13', interface '802.11a' on Controller '10.2.192.25'. Channel changed to '44' from '60' due to 'None'. Interference Energy before update is '0' and after update is '0'. Noise before update is '0' and after update is '0'. Interference before update is '0' and after update is '0'.
Is there anyway to determine what the cause of this is?
    Controller Firmware: 4.2.130.0.
    AP Model AIR-LAP1242AG-A-K9
    IOS Version 12.4(10b)JA4

If you have time sensitive app's then YES. If you have only data use and you see re-associations... also YES. I would either follow the site survey doc for channel or I would let RRM do it's thing for a couple days and get a baseline. I would then look at the power and channel to see how often it changes or not for a couple days. If I think it does change too frequently, I will set it to on demand or off. Usually if there is voice, I will set the power to 25mW and let RRM figure the channel before I disable the feature. Verify with the site survey, usually they will have the ap set to a recommended power setting when they did the site survey.
If you set it to on demand or turn the feature off, do check the channels the wlc set the ap's too.... might not be the best choice :)

    any idea ??

Your AP-manager and management interfaces is mapped to port 1:
    ap-manager                       1    80       10.41.80.2      Static  Yes    No
only APs connected to port 1 will work.
You need to either use a switch and keep port 1 connected to it while APs join through the switch or you need to create a new ap-manager interface. not even sure if you can map it to the same port or different port! not even sure about the management interface!! it is mapped to port 1 and should be reachable anyway. it is a mess!!! have you read the best practice document that I put the link for earlier?
So you need eventually a switch to fix your issue. direclty connected APs are not recommended.
I am still not knowing how Cisco provided such swtich that is supposed to handle direclty connected Aps while it does not provide a smooth way to do so.
Use a switch and everything supposed to be fine.

What's going on, and how should I iron it out?

It looks like an issue with the Wii. You could try altering the settings on the Wii, to give it a static IP address.
    See
Using static IP addresses on your home network
It should not keep disassociating with the home hub.Try changing the home hub encryption to WPA only.

  • Does iOS 6 remember access points by SSID and their associated Wi-Fi frequency?

Just trying to figure out how iOS 6.1.2 handles remembering SSID's and if it associates the frequency(2.4 or 5) to the SSID.  I work in a hospital setting. The place is littered with access points with the same SSID on 2.4ghz and 5ghz. There are places in the hospital where the Wi-Fi connection drops out on iOS but remains connected on my other device(android). If I go into settings, Wi Fi, the network is almost always visible but just seems to take forever to resolve, even in those places where it drops out its still visible. Any ideas on what might be causing iOS 6 (ipad mini) to resolve connections so slowly, is it something to do with the frequency or is it too many 'cute girls' to choose from i.e. too many overlapping SSID's in the same frequency.

The reset I wrote about was Settings-Reset-Erase All Content and Settings. Don't bother, I just did that and restored from backup. Still in exactly he same situation. Our iPad 1’s and iPhone 4’s running 5.1 appear to be fine and display everything including album covers.  I firmly believe its something in iOS 6 and/or iTunes. Either way, you'll keep knocking yourself out possibly to little avail in my opinion so this is my solution:
My iPad gen 3 is still under warrantee. I'll call Apple Support tomorrow, get a case number and ask them to call. I'm not sure if Apple has been working on this, been made aware of or ???  They keep so secretive about these types of things. I'll let you know what they tell me and keep you in the loop. If you do happen to discover a fix, please let me know. I don't know how busy support will be over the next day or two. We'll see.
I used to be quite a "fanboy" as you put it. We have an iMac, an iPad 1, two iPad 2`s, my iPad 3, and four iPhone 4’s. unfortunately, over the last year or so there has been a noticeable shift in employee attitudes in support and their stores. This surely filters down from above and along with human nature and believing they will always be better than the competition, it breeds arrogance and a shift away from the support of yesterday. I don't know if its because Jobs is no longer around or what, but it does exist. I broke from PC and windows six years ago. While I don't relish the hardware and app penalty of complete change, this update to iOS 6 is bad. Anyway, time will tell.
In the meanwhile, I'll be in touch.

  • 3502 access point keeps disassociating

We have 5508 controllers on 7.0.230.0 code. We mostly have 3502 clean air access points. We have been having issues with certain AP's disassociating. You can go on the switch and reset the port and it will come right back online. Sometimes it will stay up for 5 hours some times just for 1 or less. The port it is on has no issues and I kept a monitor on the switch just to see if anything in particular was happening and saw nothing going on that would cause the AP to go down.
Apart from the AP being bad. Is there any kind of troublshooting I can do to see what could possibly be causing this. We also have WCS and the in the event log for these AP's it just has them as dissassociating and the reason being none.

    Awesome.
Thanks for all of the responses.
    Leolaohoo,
Here is my output. I am assumming this command is essentially the same as using a cable tester? If it is
    F-1-C3750#test cable-diagnostics tdr int g2/0/7
TDR test started on interface Gi2/0/7
A TDR test can take a few seconds to run on an interface
Use 'show cable-diagnostics tdr' to read the TDR results.
    F-1-C3750#sh cable-diagnostics tdr int g2/0/7
TDR test last run on: May 24 08:38:50
Interface Speed Local pair Pair length        Remote pair Pair status
    Gi2/0/7   1000M Pair A     N/A                N/A         Not Completed
                    Pair B     N/A                N/A         Not Completed
                    Pair C     N/A                N/A         Not Completed
                    Pair D     N/A                N/A         Not Completed
    F-1-C3750#sh cable-diagnostics tdr int g2/0/7
It doesnt appear to be testing too well. I ran the show command quite a few times and still got these same results. I did have to do a shut/no shut on the port to get the AP up and going. So when I ran the test the port was in a up/up status.
If we end up having to RMA that I guess that is what we will do. BUT, if there is any other way for a fix I would love to hear about it. We have a couple hundred of these, only about 10 ap's are experiencing this issue. But they are hanging in the ceiling and not easily accessible.

  • Is there any way I can control which specific access point I connect (and stay connected) to from amongst a set of access points with the same SSID?

I'm working from a boat in a harbor in which the ISP has deployed numerous access points around the periphery.  All the access points share the same SSID and each is configured to use either channel 1, 6 or 11.   From my location, there are over a dozen of these access points "visible" (based on the the output of WiFi Scanner) with a range of RSSI and S/N values that vary over time.
The ISP has told me that the quality of my connection should be "perfectly fine" for any access point with an RSSI value better than -75, but I know from experience that my connection quality is miserable (i.e. < 50Kbps download) for almost all of these, including those with RSSI values better than -75.  There is at least one exception, however, which gives me on the order of 2Mbps download, which is "great" in this context.
I've tried using a more powerful USB antenna plugged into my MacBook Air (mid 2011), but as far as I can tell, it really doesn't make much difference.  Neither does my location within the boat.   The overriding factor seems to be which access point I happen to connect up to.
I should point out that the closest access points are about 75 yards away, with many of them being several hundred yards away or more.  I'm guessing that even though the signal strength of some of the distant access points is causing them to get "chosen" some times, the results are unacceptable due to the distance.
I'm hoping that I can determine, through experimentation, which access point(s) provide(s) acceptable performance and then configure my Mac to limit my connection to those points through whatever mechanism I need to use (e.g. channel, MAC id, etc.).

Establishing a wireless connection with a client computer is left to the access point for various reasons. One reason that your Mac may not connect to the strongest access point is that it may have reached a limit of the number of clients it can serve, leaving it unable to accept a connection with another. The limit may not be very large.
Suppose that happens, and your Mac establishes a connection with a more distant access point having a weaker signal. Then, suppose a client drops off the network. Doesn't this mean your Mac will switch to the stronger access point? Not necessarily. The throughput delivered to and from your Mac would have to drop below a threshold specified in the AP for it to drop the client, leaving your Mac free to connect with another one. The reason for this is to prevent rapid switching from one AP to another in an area in which two signals are of approximately equal quality. If that were to occur the frequent and repetitive handshaking between the two devices would slow throughput to zero.
In an environment in which several access points are broadcasting the same SSID, Apple provides no insight as to how it determines which access point to choose. This is the reason I suspect this "choice" is a function of the router, or access point. The connection originates with it, not the Mac.
Now, what would solve your dilemma would be to determine a way to control the access point with which your Mac connects, by specifying the access point's unique MAC address for example. In this happy circumstance, you could maintain an editable "whitelist" or "blacklist" of the harbor's access points and be able to choose which among them you prefer.
I do not believe OS X maintains such a record of MAC addresses though, only those of the routers it uses. If I am correct about that, such a solution is unlikely to exist. Don't let that discourage you from searching for one though... I would concentrate on something like "selecting access point by specific MAC address".
I did find this patent application though:
Roaming Network Stations Using A Mac Address Identifier To Select New Access Point
    Perhaps it's a start

  • Access Points at branch and WLC located at Head Quarters

    Guys,
Please excuse these entry-level questions, but we are just starting here with Cisco wireless technologies.... Can we deploy, let's say 8 3600 APs in one branch and have the WLC deployed at another branch? Could this be possible?
    thank you in advance

Guys, thank you very much for the input so far.
You are always not one, but many steps ahead from a novice
George Stefanick, yes, we have IPSec site-to-site tunnels with all the branches from the main site. Is via the vpn tunnels where FlexConnect limitations come to play?  What exactly are the limitations of FlexConnect that I need to be aware of??/
As you can see, we have many branches all over the states and also overseas. The initial thought was only to deploy APs where we have warehouses (we really have over 20 branches - and growing - but only 5 of them have warehouses...) So, as I look deeper into cisco WiFi technologies, I can really see all these good features that we can certainly use. So with these features, I think it might make more sense, like rasikanayanajith advised, to really keep the WLC at the main site and deploy the APs at the warehouse with the FlexConnect feature.
This way, all the executives, as they travel to all the 5 warehouses, will only need to be concerned with one single set of credentials (their AD credentials), is this correct????  as I assume we can setup Radius Authentication for the clients to login via the WiFi.
please advise and thank you again

  • Cisco aironet access-point keep asking username/password

    Hi all,
Some of my access-points (Light Weight) just keep asking username/passwords when accessed through web and clicked on any option available there. Any idea why that happens?
    Thanks in advance!
    Gaurav

Some of my access-points (Light Weight) just keep asking username/passwords when accessed through web and clicked on any option available there. You sure it's LWAP?  The reason why I'm asking because you would NOT be able to access an LWAP over HTML because it's LWAP.

  • Wireless Access Points - Time Capsule and Netgear

Ok...Netgear support site was completely useless so I am hoping that someone over here can help me out. I think what I am trying to do is relatively simple but for 3 days now I have gotten no-joy.
Here is my current configuration: Westell DSL Modem (wireless disabled) --wired-- Netgear WNR834B (SSID 1, operating b/g mode) --wired-- Time Capsule (SSID 2, operating n mode, connection sharing Off Bridge mode). All other devices are hanging off wirelessly to one of the two routers.
What I am trying to do is add a wireless Access Point (Netgear WN802T) to the picture. I need better coverage on the other side of the house and don't want to run wires. The WNR834B is WDS compatible but I can't figure out how to put it into repeater mode or bridge mode. So I thought my next best bet (before going out and buying even more hardware) would be to try and extend the TIme Capsule network. I have been unsuccessful so far (SSIDs are the same, channels are the same, WEP set because I read somewhere that WPA was not supported in repeater/bridge mode). Is it even possible to use a Netgear Access Point with the Time Capsule (I would think it would work, but I just can't get it to).
I can get the WN802T to be seen in my network, but I can not get it to carry the internet connection.
Any advice or steps would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any/all help

    friars, welcome to the discussions!
Sorry, but the possibility of extending the wireless network created by the Time Capsule with a device from another manufacturer is almost zero. Based on information from other top users, the only Netgear model that is shown as WDS compatible with an Apple base station is a model WGR614 v6.
Take a look at an Apple AirPort Express to "extend" the network created by the Time Capsule. While the Express will also do WDS, the bandwidth on your network will be cut by 50% with the addition of just one WDS device. The "extend" feature on the Express does not impose this type of penalty and it is fully WPA/WPA2 capable as well, much more secure than WEP.
For about the same money as an Express, you might also consider ethernet power line adapters. Almost as good as having a direct ethernet connection. Available from Netgear, Linksys, and others.

  • I have an iPhone 4 that i was trying to fix and now it will not turn on at all is there anyway that i can access all my pictures and contacts from my new phone or pc? It is also on the same apple id, but i dont know if that would help with anything.

I have an iPhone 4 thats i was trying to fix and now it will not turn on at all is there anyway that i can access my pictures and contacts from my new phone or pc? Aslo the are both on the same apple id but i dont know if that would help or not.

Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.
Pictures taken with the device are designed to regularly be copied off the device to a computer as would be done with any digital camera.
If you have failed to use the device as designed it may be too late to recovery anything.
Is the device regularly backed up to a computer via iTunes?  If so, the most recent backup (when restored to a replacement iOS device) should contain all contacts and pictures as of when the backup was created.
