ACCESS POINTS LOSING CONFIG CAPWAP

I know there were a few post about users losing their access point config after a power loss to the ap. I wanted to share that I can confirm and reproduce this same issue with a number of access points that I have. I opened a tac case and will update this tread as the case progresses.

  • AP541 Access Point Best config for multiple VAPS Advice

    Hi
I have several AP541 (on different site locations) which I have currently configured for WPA enterprise using windows 2008 as the Radius server. This works fine for staff members who use the wireless when roaming around the offices.
I would also like to setup another VAP for guests to allow them to access our internet but nothing else on the network. I was wondering what approach would be the best one to adopt to achieve this. Would I be best to setup a WPA Personal VAP and allow guests to access the wireless this way. Or is there a better approach? If we did adopt this approach I presume this would mean that we have to log onto each AP in turn and then change the WPA key on each one everytime we decide to change the key? Or is there some clever software I could use to change them all in one go.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Colin

    Hello Simon,
I would keep them all in Access Point mode if you are planning on having them all hardwired into your network. That is the best setup.
As for Wireless WDS repeater or Wireless Client/Repeater, you would use these features if you are trying to extend your wireless signal at a certain location in your building but you are not able to run a ethernet cable to that location. So all you would do is power up the WAP4410n and it will help increase the wireless signal in that location if set in repeater mode. The draw back to this is it will cut your througput by half.
Wireless WDS bridge, you would use this feature if you are wanting to extend your network to a location were you are not able to run a ethernet cable to. Once you set up the bridge you would place it in the location were you are wanting to extend your hardwire network. If you plug a PC into the ethernet port on the Bridged WAP then you should be able to pull a IP address from the main network. When set in this mode it will not broadcast a wireless signal.. so you will not be able to connect wirelessly to the device once it is in Wireless Bridge mode.
Wireless Monitor.. not sure about this feature.. never used it.
This keep in mind that these devices will usually only bridge or use repeater with themselves and not other devices.
If you are wanting to start adding VLANs in the future you will need to stick to Access point mode since that mode will allow you to set up more than one VLAN the WAP can look out for. If you use repeater or bridge mode feature you will only be able to use 1 vlan.
I hope that helps you out!
    Thanks,

  • Access point channel config

    hi
I have 5 access points and want to configure channel and its frequencies...
what should be the channel frequency and its operating mode so that user would get bestpossible results??
I am facing some wifi fluctuation problems
I have set frequency channel to auto
    operating mode to mixed
    channel bandwidth 20
    I am using trendnet 638AP
    please help

Think of it like a classroom.  We'll call the students channel 1.
So when a student is talking, no one else should be talking, so that he/she can say what the need to.  Now a step further, if all the children are trying to talk at the same time, no one can hear what anyone else is trying to say, the all interfer with each other.
Now, you have three children, 1(spanish),6(english), and 11(french).  Now each of these are speaking to their translator.  Because they are different, they can all speak at the same time withouth inteferring with each other.
An odd analogy, but does it make sense?

  • 2602 lightweight AP losing config on reboot

Anyone encountered an issue with the 2602E access points losing config everytime they lose power?
I have a 5508 WLC running 7.4.121.0 code and two 2602E Flexconnect access points that everytime they lose power they default their configuration. The APs are located at a remote site connected via MPLS and are configured for FlexConnect with local switching. The 2602Es will re-associate with the WLC since the DHCP option 43 points them to it, they just show up with the default config.
I have three 2602E models at the site but only two of them are doing this, the third comes back up and associates and has retained its configuration. I also have several 1142 models at the site and they behave normally.

There are no secondary controllers, just the primary. These two access points lose all configuration, name, ap group, flexconnect group, flexconnect setting, everything. Its like they are new out of the box and associating for the first time. I have a third 2602E located att the same site and have tested it via power reset and reboots and it retains all config. Both the AP that retains its info and the two that dont are all running the same code/boot version/etc. I cant see any difference in their configuration.

  • Monitor capwap access points

    Hello ,
After migrating from standalone access points to capwap access points ( with wireless lan controller / Cisco Prime ) , a lot of people are wondering how to monitor their AP's by receiving traps from the controllers .
I am searching for trap list that should be accepted by a monitoring product ( ie nagios  ) in order to monitor the status of the access points .
Where can i find this info ?
    Thank you in advance for your help ;
    Rgds.
    Hubert.

Since all AP managed by WLC, all information available from WLC, no need to directly get this information from AP directly.
If you want you can configure AP & WLC syslog to export to a syslog server & then analyse them. Below post may give some idea

  • Looking individual log of CAPWAP Access Point

    Hi all,
I have a wireless network running with Controller WISM2 and I also have a NCS.
I want to know if there is any way to look of individual log of CAPWAP and LAPWAP Access Points. It is better if I can see it through NCS.
I know we can see it through console but it is not that I am looking for.
    I appreciate your help.
    Regards.

    Hi,
You can not probably see messages on NCS. But you can probably assign syslog server ip address to the APs via DHCP.
I also remember there was a command that you can apply from the controller where that command allows you to apply commands on the AP and show you the results.
If I remember correctly it was something like "show ap command ...... etc"
    Hope this helps

  • CAPWAP access point

    - Is there any instruction on how to provision the access point from CAPWAP?
    - I have one access point that lost the configuration and can access to the console port only. How do I provision the AP back to the controller?
    Thank you very much.

First, the Access-Point needs an IP Address. Assign IP address to the Access-Point using a DHCP Server configured on the router. Use the Option 43 with the AP Manager IP of the Wireless Controller. Here an Example:
Complete these steps in order to configure DHCP Option 43 for lightweight Cisco Aironet access points in the
    embedded Cisco IOS DHCP server:
    1. Enter configuration mode at the Cisco IOS CLI.
    2. Create the DHCP pool, which includes the necessary parameters, such as the default router and server
name. This is an example DHCP scope:ip dhcp pool
    network
    default-router
    dns-server
    3. Add the Option 43 line with this syntax:option 43 hex
The hexadecimal string in step 3 is assembled as a sequence of the TLV values for the Option 43 suboption:
    Type + Length + Value.
Type is always the suboption code 0xf1. Length is the number of controllermanagement IP addresses times 4 in hex.
Value is the IP address of the controller listed sequentially in hex.For example, suppose there are two controllers with management interface IP addresses, 192.168.10.5 and
    192.168.10.20. The type is 0xf1. The length is 2 * 4 = 8 = 0x08. The IP addresses translate to c0a80a05
(192.168.10.5) and c0a80a14 (192.168.10.20). When the string is assembled, it yields
f108c0a80a05c0a80a14. The Cisco IOS command that is added to the DHCP scope is:
    option 43 hex f108c0a80a05c0a80a14

  • How can I verify CAPWAP/LWAPP access point?

    Hello,
I wonder how can I check / what command shoul I use on non-autonomous access points to see wether they are support capwap or they support lwapp??
    Thank you folks..

    Hello,
I think Leo means how to distinguish by autonomous and lightwieght. not between LWAPP and CAPWAP.
Autohomous APs have in their image nam: K9W7 while lightweight APs have K9W8. That is correct. But I think this is not the answer.
In order to distinguish if an AP uses LWAPP or CAPWAP you have first to know that:
    - Some old APs support only LWAPP. They do not support CAPWAP (1010 and 1030 for example).
    - CAPWAP started with WLC version 5.2. If you have 5.2 or later then your AP supports CAPWAP. (old APs metnioed above are not supported on 5.x. they are supported on up to 4.x).
    - Some APs support CAPWAP only. They work onlyh on WLCs with version 5.2 and above that supports capwap. (1140 for example does not work with 4.x, 5.0 or 5.1). While some other APs may work with either lwapp or capwap (1240 works with lwapp if it joing WLC running 5.0 while it works with capwap if it joins WLC that runs 7.x).
Now, in order to know if your AP supports capwap or lwapp:
    - You need to know if your AP has any limitation (if it is capwap only, lwapp only or can run on both).
    - if your AP can run on both lwapp and capwap you can do follow the follownig steps:
    * show version from the AP to know the IOS version running on it.
    * Go to this link (wireless compatibility matrix): http://tiny.cc/k08thw
    * in the page, look for your IOS versoin that you knew from show version command.
    * find what is WLC version that your AP version corresponds to.
    * If the corresponding WLC version is 5.2 or later then you are running CAPWAP. If your WLC runs 5.1 or earlier then      you are running lwapp.

  • QOS config 4500 switchport for Lightweight access point

What is the best QOS configuration what needs to be applied on a 4500 switchport for Lightweight access point.

    Hi,
If you are asking about Layer 2 QoS configuration for switch-port then it is global command, which will apply on all switch-ports, not for any specific switch-port.
As far as switch-port mode is concern which in connected to LWAP then yes it is better you keep it in default mode.

  • PPPoE and VPDN config. in Cisco Access Points

Hi, Im looking for possibility to configure Cisco Access Points for PPPoE and VPDN anybody knows pls reply to [email protected] tks

I can only comment on the wireless voice side. Phones will be setting the Qos (Cos and ip precedence) you will need all the devices in the network to understand these QoS and act apropiately, prioritizing voice over other data.
If you can't guaratee that all devices that the voice will cross will maintain those Cos/dscp settings and will prioritize the voice, you can't guarantee how the voice quality would be.

  • SSH Version Supported by Access Points

    Hi,
I'm hoping this is an easy question...so apologies if it appears facile, but I can't find a definitive answer in any Cisco docs I've looked through.
When access points are used with a WLC, its possible to allow the access points to accept SSH connections (Under the advanced tab of the AP config).
My question is this: which version of SSH will be used when SSH sessions are created to the AP? (SSH v2?)
All of the data sheets etc. talk about SSH support, but give now version details.
    Thanks in advance.
    Nigel.

    Hi Nigel,
Scott is right (as usual )
Just to confirm, I accessed a CAPWAP AP and looked at the #sh derived-config and this was the only SSH output shown, with SSH enabled on the AP:
    ip ssh version 2
So, it looks like only SSH2 is allowed. Just to let you know the code ver was 7.0.116.0

  • Cisco 3700 Access Point static IP assignment

    Hello,
Able to access console on the 3700 AP yet unable to find any commands that permit the assignment of a static IP and mask?

It depends on the kind of IOS software currently running on your access-point, below the examples for both autonomous and Controller based.
    Autonomous
    AP#conf t
    AP(config)#int bvI 1
    AP(config-if)# ip address <IP> <subnetmask>
    AP(config-if)# exit
    AP(config)#ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 <IP GW>
    Controller based
    AP#capwap ap ip address <IP> <subnetmask>
    AP#capwap ap ip default-gateway <IP GW>
    AP#test capwap restart
Optionally to statically configure the WLC to join:
AP#capwap ap controller ip address <Management IP of the WLC>

  • New wireless network with several access points

    Hi,
We are planing to deploy a wireless network that will cover two floors consisting of about 5 or 6 Access points. It should have 2 or 3 SSID (placing the clients in 2 or 3 different VLANS).
What would be the best solution for this?
I read a lot about wireless controllers. What about an option to just buy standalone access points? Are they all configured to work with the same SSID's and on the same channel?

A centralized controller should make your life easier:
    - Centralized config - set up everything on the controller and it gets applied to the AP's.
    - Centralized monitoring - when someone has a problem, you can check the controller instead of having to figure out the AP to which they are connecting (computers don't always connect to the closest AP)
    - Dumb AP's - if someone steals one of your APs, they will not be able to learn much about your network from a lightweight AP
    - Radio Resource Management - let the controller make the channel and power setting decisions for you
    - If you use PoE, you may never have to get on a ladder and use the console port of a lightweight AP. The AP is managed by the controller, and for the rare occasion that you can't get an AP to respond - just cycle the power to the AP via the switch port.
    There are some downsides:
    - Cost of the controller (since you're buying AP's one way or the other)
    - Most cost: If your wireless network is important, then you typically want a second wireless controller as a backup
    - Probably more downsides, but my brain hurts today

  • How do I use Airport Extreme to create wired access point on wireless network?

Bit of an odd situation. I just went from cable to DSL at home and the modem moved from right by my computer to upstairs.
Trouble is, there's no real easy way to get a cable from the modem upstairs to my X-box (sans wireless connector) downstairs.
I could buy the wireless adaptor for the X-Box, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend any more money.
I have my airport extreme, and I was hoping I could use it to create a wired access point on the network, recieving the signal from the wireless modem upstairs and allowing me to plug in the X-Box.
Is this possible? If so, how? I've been through the config panel about a dozen times, but can't figure out what combination to set up.
    Thanks.

Will it work if I use the express to create the network?
Yes, providing that you have an 802.11n version of the AirPort Express and the Express has been configured to "Allow this network to be extended".
Then, the AirPort Extreme can be configured to "extend" the Express network. When you do this, the AirPort Extreme will provide more wireless coverage and the LAN Ethernet ports are enabled, so you can connect an Ethernet device.
This will not be a "normal" Ethernet connection. It will only work as well as the wireless "hop" between the Express and Extreme allow.
For best results and performance, a wired connection through the hole in the wall is always best. If you decide to do this, you will need the "new" AirPort Express with both a WAN and LAN port on the device. But, you could try wireless first to see if it will meet your goals before you reach for the tools.
