Access to non-apple system prefs

We are in a corporate environment. When setting up new Macs we turn off access to the System Preferences using the Accounts Control Panel. We want to prevent users from changing Network settings, Sharing options, etc. that we setup up for our company.
The problem with this is when we install software for third-party products such as mice or graphics tablets. Many of these items install Control Panels that are accessed only through the System Preferences, but a non-admin user cannot go in and change the individual settings for these devices without having full admin rights to the System Preferences.
Are there any workarounds for being able to control which Control Panels users have access to when using System Preferences?
Thanks for any help!

If your users are non-admins, they shouldn't be able
to change the Sharing or Network prefs unless they
enter an admin password. When setting up the new
accounts, go into those prefs and ensure the little
padlock icon is locked.
Apparently this has improved over earlier versions of OS X when I wasn't looking. When we intially loaded OS X I remember turning on the access to System Prefs and locking the various control panels for the non-admin users, but I recall that some of them didn't stay locked. That's why we started turning off access to them completly. After that initial install of our desktop Macs I never tried this again. We've updated the OS a couple times, but never went in and tried this again because everything was working fine. But when I went to setup some new laptops with wireless mice that had their own control panels this became an issue and that's why I was looking for the workaround. It would be nice if Apple gave you a way in System Preferences to turn on/off access to the individual CPs without having to muck with system like this. But this will work for now.

  • Is there any way to get the server app other that through the app store. We do not have our system conneted to a network. I typical downloaded items on a non-apple system.

is there any way to get the server app other than through the app store. The system that I need it on are not connected to the internet.
We run a closed-loop network of apple systems and I tipically downloaded updates on a non-apple system that was on the internet.
    Any ideas?

I did buy the server app, went to the app store to download it. This system I'm using for downloads is Snow Leopard 10.6.8, it shows that I can download it but only as an Install which says I need 10.8. I can't seem to find a way for it to just download as a package or .dmg file so that I can copy it to DVD/CD or flash drive.

  • Apple System Prefs, Many utilities, Insallers won't launch!!!!

    Hey all,
I have reset the pram, ran cocktail, used disk utility,
    repaired permissions...
apple system preferences hangs upon launch. installers
do the same. utilities like address book, stuffit, won't
even spark. anybody have a tip to help me out of this?
i updated to 10.3.9 months ago, this is a new issue.
    thanks.

Did you delete any fonts located in /System/Library/Fonts? Various Apple applications require certain fonts or they will not launch, or launch with nothing visible. Check that folder and be sure you have all these:
    Apple LiGothic Medium.dfont
    AppleGothic.dfont
    AquaKanaBold.otf
    AquaKanaRegular.otf
    Courier.dfont
    Geneva.dfont
    Helvetica.dfont
    Keyboard.dfont
    LastResort.dfont
    LucidaGrande.dfont
    Monaco.dfont
    Osaka.dfont
    OsakaMono.dfont
    Symbol.dfont
    Times.dfont
    ZapfDingbats.dfont
If you do, it's also possible that one or more of them are corrupted, and Font Book does not report this with any reliability. Your best option would be to reinstall just those fonts from your OS X install disc. One other possible solution would be to reinstall the 10.3.9 Combo Update, which would overwrite any damaged or corrupted files.
Before you do any of those things, you should try creating a test account and see if all these applications work in that account. If so, that would isolate the problem to something in your account.

  • Airport Express as access point non-Apple router's network?

I have a first generation Airport Express and I'd like to use it as an access point on a friend's network with another brand's router.  Here's what I have in mind, hopefully others here can confirm/deny that this will work:
In the Internet tab of the Airport Express I will choose manual IP addressing and pick an address on the same subnet as the main router that's outside the range the router distributes.
In the Wireless tab I will choose Create a Wireless Network, name it identically to the existing network with identical security, and choose a non-overlapping channel.
The Airport Express will be connected by ethernet cable to a Lan port of the main router.
    This should work, right?  Thanks.

I forgot to say, but it will not detect the Slingbox on my network when I'm connected through the Airport Express. It detects if fine if I plug in my laptop to the router.

  • MI access to non SAP system

    Hi,
how can I access webservices through MI.
Also If i have a database which allows jdbc access how do I access it thru MI.?

    Hi Shalu,
In the MI Client you can have either AWT or JSP Application.
These are different user interface available for a MI Client.
Since you are intrested in webservices. you should use JSP Framework applciation.
    <b>How can i access webservices through MI?</b>
    In a real scenario,
    1. You create a JSP Application using SAP-IDE. i.e SAP Netweavar Studio.
    2. Export your jsp project to a .war file.
    3. Deploy the .war file in the MI Server using WEB CONSOLE.
    4. Assign this JSP Application to your userid & password which inturn corresponds to the MI Client.
    5. Now, the MI Client has to synchronize it. So that the
application is visible in the MI Client.
    6. MI Client sees the application as a link which he can use it later.
If i have a database which allows jdbc access how do i access it through MI?
Since you are going to use the application(Either JSP or AWT) in the client side and
since you are going to write those application in the MI Client. i.e Your machine,
The Data Source Name associated with your project is already present in your machine/client right.
So the MI client which is installed in your machine which is either JSP or AWT, takes care of the database access. :-D.
    Check this link...

  • Apple Desktop pictures do not appear in System Prefs

I tried to change my desktop picture and discovered that there are none of the apple images showing in the system prefs for Desktop & Screen Saver. The folders are there (Apple images, nature, plants, etc) but the folders are empty.
Digging via the finder I found in Library/Desktop Pictures all of the missing files but Prefs does not apparently see them.
The default Aurora was there after 10.5.5 upgrade, then I replaced it with one of my own from the user/Pictures folder which shows in the prefs window. All of those pictures still show in prefs.
    What is wrong?

    Derryl S wrote:
Conclusion, there is now something about my account that no longer can see the contents of the Desktop Pictures folder. Why is unknown still.
Usually, a bad preference file or incompatible login item is the culprit, although it could also be corrupted data in a user cache.
For the first, you can try moving likely suspects from ~/Library/Preferences to a desktop temp folder, then logging out & back in or restarting to see if the problem is gone. If not replace the old preference from the temp folder to its original location to restore the old preferences. One general way that may help locate suspect pref files is to change the preference in the normal way while ~/Library/Preferences is sorted by date changed -- the file storing the preferences should be very near the top of the list.
You can also run a terminal command that checks the syntax of most preference files. It won't indicate all problems but it is worth a shot. In Terminal type:
    sudo plutil -s ~/Library/preferences/*.plist
followed by pressing the return key. At the password prompt, enter you admin account password & press return again. It won't be echoed to the screen. If you get nothing besides the prompt for the next command, those prefs are syntactically correct. Otherwise, remove the indicated pref file as above & test.
If desired, repeat this for the main system-wide preference folder with this command:
    sudo plutil -s /Library/preferences/*.plist
Note: since your new account has no problems, it is highly unlikely a system preference is the problem.
For login items, check the list in the accounts system preference. Suspect anything that isn't from Apple. You can list them here in a new post if you have any questions about them.
If the problem is a bad user cache, a third party utility like Onyx or Leopard Cache Cleaner will allow you to "clean" (delete) them. Try this as a last resort, since caches speed up the operation of your Mac & will need to be rebuild by the system, causing one-time delays until this is done.

  • Universal Access System Pref disappeared

Recent MBP, OS X 10.7.4.  Up until today, Universal Access worked perfectly (Command-option-+/_ to zoom screen).  Today, when I tried it, it didn't work.  When I opend System Preferences, Universal Access System Pref had disappeard.  I tried moving the com.apple.universalaccess.plist file to the desktop and rebooting - no luck.  I tried restoring from Time Machine the com.apple.universalaccess.plist and com.apple universalaccess.plist.lockfile files, then restarting - no luck.  I also tried reinstalling the OS X 10.7.4 update package - no luck.
Short of totally reinstalling the entire OS, can anyone help me with an idea?
    Thanks,
    Claude

A few System Preferences to check:
Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts make sure you have not assigned a keyboard shortcut to opening System Preferences.
Universal Access > Keyboard make sure Sticky Keys is set to off.
Universal Access > Mouse make sure Mouse Keys is set to off.
Accounts > Login Items make sure VoiceOver is not one of your login items.

  • System Pref's freeze when trying to access "Desktop & Screen Saver"

    Hi.
Every time I access the Desktop & Screen Saver category from the System Pref's window, the System Pref's freeze up (spinning beach ball of death appears) and I have to force quit.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks all.
    vanessa_b

Apparently, there's corruption somewhere. Move the com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.systempreferences.plist files out of ~/Library/Preferences/ to the desktop, move the three or four com.apple.screensaver plist files out of ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ to the desktop, log out and back in. Now try to set the Desktop & Screensaver PrefPane. Note that you'll have to reset some items in System Preferences. If that fixes the problem, then one or more of those plist files is the culprit. You have two options. Reset your System Prefs and throw away the files you moved to the desktop or replace the new ones with the ones you took out, one at a time, until you find the one causing the problem.

  • Non admin user - changes not saved (Safari settings, system prefs, etc.)

iMac, 2 users, one is administrator and other is standard user. Recently, in the non-admin user account, it has become impossible to make any changes. For example, adding an application to the the Dock, after logging out and back in next time, the application is not in the Dock any more. Also, making changes to the prefs in Safari, changes are not saved.
I noticed this after installing FireFox v4. I installed it as admin whilst in the non-admin users account. However, I don't believe that the installation of FF has anything to do with the problem, it just highlighted it. I've checked the permissions for the various directories that hold prefs info such as user/libraries/application prefs/etc. etc. and also Safari prefs. Nothing I can see that has changed in system prefs.
Any ideas on what has caused the problem (kids are known to fiddle from within the non-admin account) and any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks

    Hi PPRuNe,
You could try making the standard user an Admin too. To do this, make sure you are logged in to the standard user, go to System Preferences > Accounts > Standard user (you may have to unlock the padlock) > Allow user to administer this computer
This will allow changes to be made without being prompted for a password all the time.
However, if you had Parental Controls on, they probably won't work on an admin account because as an admin you have complete control over a computer, so the computer thinks there is no point in having the controls turned on. And if the kids are known to "fiddle," just think carefully!
    Hope this helps you.
    Chris.

  • Hi All. I reluctantly upgraded to IOS 7 last night and now cannot access my home WIFI, all other non Apple devices are fine. I have reset, it will not allow me to 'forget this network', doesnt show the option. I have turned on and off

Hi All, I reluctantly upgraded to IOS 7.1.1 on my IPAD last night , reluctant as every upgrade which promises fixes which dont impact me causes problems that do , which I fix via this community. Today I can no longer access my WIFI at home, my non Apple devices all work fine.I have tried all the online suggestions I can find for this, reset facgtory settings, it will not allow me to 'forget this network', I try to reconnect and it asks for my password which I know is correct and it says it cannot access my network. It can access an unsecured one I believe, but that is not ideal. Any fresh suggestions would be really welcome, please. Many thanks

Thanks so much for your reply, yes I did and that has not worked either . A friend has suggested re installing upgrade, so may try that .

  • System Prefs - options greyed out or non-functional

I have been having a bad time lately with my System Prefs. I first noticed it when settings to Mouse and Sound would not retain after a restart.
Now the problems are much worse...
I cannot open the Date & Time pane at all (ignores clicking), all options in Sharing are grayed out and cannot be changed (even though account is admin and the lock is unlocked), I am unable to create a new user, and changes to Energy Saver result in spinning color wheel.
I have deleted every preference and cache I could find in the user and rebuilt permissions but no luck. I am considering enabling root and seeing if that can go in and make changes since I cannot create a new admin user otherwise.
Short of a painful OS reinstall anybody have suggestions?
I also might consider riding it out and waiting for 10.5.

    Hi,
Check the Font AppleGothic.ttf is active and validates using the Font Book app.
if you have to change anything restart the Mac.
If this is not the issue go to ~/Library/Preferences and find com.apple.ichat.plist and Drag it to the Trash and then restart Messages.
The above reply in another thread solved my issue! Namely that my apple gothic font was disabled, breaking the entire Messages app.

  • I have just upgraded to OSX Maverick and now my Apple TV has taken over my iTunes videos. I have tried turning off homeshare and iHave gone into system prefs and disabled the remote, but the problem persists. Any ideas.

After upgrading to OSX Maverick my Apple TV  has taken control of my iTunes videos insisting I have to watch it on my TV. I have tried disabling home sharing on iTunes and on the Apple TV menu, I have also checked the disable Infrared facility in Systems Prefs Security. Even if I put the Apple TV in standby as soon as I hit a key on my iMac, Apple TV comes back on and on my Itunes screen I get the Apple TV logo imprinted on the screen, meaning I can no longer watch it on my MAC, I have run out of ideas. Can anyone help.

I think you're headed the right direction. There is an AirPlay icon (on mine it is up near the play/pause controls) that I believe is used to set the default desitination for the video to play.
I'd never seen your issue before, but opened iTunes on a recently-upgraded-to-Mavericks MacBook and it did exactly as you described. While the video was loading, I switched the AirPlay option to the computer instead of ATV and it began playing locally (after a delay as you'd mentioned). I then read this page, which is actually quite old: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1091073, which lead me to the icon near the play/pause button. It now has Computer selected on it, and defaults to play locally instead of the ATV even after quitting and reopening iTunes. I hope that is helpful.
