Access to Preview Sidebar in Safari?

Occasionally, the PDF docs I view online contain links to other PDF docs (a Table of Contents, for example). These docs open directly in Safari rather than Preview and, as such, allow limited PDF controls (zoom, open in Preview, save to Downloads).
But to be at all useful, I need access to the Preview Sidebar. This would allow me to select linked PDF files, such as might be found in a Table of Contents.
Is it possible to access the Preview Sidebar when viewing PDF files from within Safari, or must I resort to selecting a different PDF Reader as my default application - Adobe Reader, for example, where all PDF controls are available from within Safari when viewing a PDF file?
Thanks for your thoughts...

As far as I know, you can't view the PDF sidebar within Safari. +(Edit: Actually, you do get a sidebard when you use Adobe Reader to "display PDF in browser" instead of Preview, as you suggest in your post.)+
But if it helps, you can choose to download a PDF file instead of viewing it in Safari, and then open it in Preview or Acrobat Reader. Control-click (or right-click) on the link to the PDF and choose the option to download it, or if it's already open you can just save it. Then double-click on the file's icon in Safari's downloads window to open it in your default PDF reader.
Apologies if you already knew that. I've always done the above because I find PDF files easier to handle in a real PDF reader rather than a web browser. But I don't mind allowing PDFs to open in Safari by default, for quick viewing when I don't need all of the usual controls.

  • Previewing PDFs in Safari WITHOUT downloading

Before downloading Adobe Creative Suite yesterday I was abe to preview in Safari (not Preview) without downloading them first. Then after downloading CS I got an error telling me there was a missing plugin. I researched the problem here and removed the offending Adobe plugin from my Library, but now when I click on a PDF instead of being able to preview it in Safari first and then decide if I need to download it, it just automatically downloads and opens on Preview. I'm in school and there are hundreds of PDFs we need to read. I don't want to have to download every one of them onto my local machine to read them...

    Hi George
depending on if they're regular direct links - Option clicking them all is the quickest w/o adding any software.
http://www.sitesucker.us/mac.html may be useful - you'd need to remove the non-pdf files afterwards, but that's very quick if Finder is displaying them by file type.
I've seen a more customisable application, that you could likely say 'just pdf's from this page' to - if I recall it I'll post again.

Safari 5.1.9 and Java 6 are the latest versions available for OS X 10.6.8. To upgrade any further you would need to upgrade to Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.4) through the Mac App Store.

my BT yahoo email account doesn't accept my password when my Mac tries to access it using mac mail but when I access My BT Yahoo via Safari it accepts the password.

When it doesn't accept the password from Mail , it can be things other than the password actually.
It could be their Server, which is contacted differently than through WebMail, it just means the Server listening on this port, (or not listening), is not finding your username & password.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?

  • Can I access Apple Pay information with Safari on my iPhone?

I am trying to order something online but forgot my Credit Card. I have an app that is going through maintenance and it redirects me to the mobile website. I go to make my order and come to the payment screen. Is there a way to access my Apple Pay through Safari to enter in my payment information?

    Try Firefox >  Download Firefox
On your Mac, make sure your OS X is up to date.
Click Software Update from your Apple  drop down menu, or go to the App Store, select Updates from the menu top of that window.

  • I can not access preview mode in safari

Choosing file > Preview takes me somewhere else and I can not access preview mode at all. Every time I select preview it takes me to some strange site with att and my first name in it. Very Frustrating.
I am using the latest upgrade for Muse 2014, so I don't think the version is to blame. Has anyone else had a similar problem, and what did you do to resolve it, and did it work?

    Hi
When you click on preview, what is the url in the browser? Also, Muse uses the default browser of the OS, so is it possible to change the default browser and test it again to see if it works.

  • How to get Preview to be Safari's default PDF viewer

I mistakenly downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader, after being advised by a state tax website.  I wish I had first tested my existing configuration because Safari/Preview had always worked just fine for viewing PDF (with the Feds!), but I didn't.  Adobe A. Reader "asked me" if I wanted to make it the default reader of PDF, and mistake number two, I clicked yes.  Then I realized I didn't like A.A.Reader compared with Preview, so I threw it out (I coudn't find any uninstall function). After that Preview worked for PDF files already on my computer, but not in Safari.  Safari Help said there is a toolbar that can be accessed by putting the pointer over the bottom center of the (SafarI) browser window and then 4 buttons are supposed to appear, one saying "open PDF with Preview."  I cant seem to get this toolbar to appear!
I hope there is someone clever out there to tell me how to get Preview to open PDF files in Safari again.
Message was edited by: blckhed     OK, just like the mistake I made with A. A. Reader, I should've looked through the discussions 1st (blame it on tax fatigue) because I found the answer in response to "Adobe Reader messed up Preview & Safari for me.  What now."  I removed the offending AAP plugins from the Internet Plugins folder (Mac HD>Library>Internet Plug-ins) and everything is back to normal.  Thanks Apple Discussions!

  • Force PDFs to open in Preview instead of Safari?

When I click on a .pdf link in Safari, it opens up in the browser as part of Acrobat Professional. How can I instead have it automatically open in Preview (which is much faster, less bloated)?

    Hi
First open Acrobat Professional. Open Preferences. Change the PDF viewer default.
Next, go to the Finder: Internet Plug-ins folder in either the main or User Library. Remove the Adobe PDF plug-in. Restart Safari.
PDF should now open in Safari. If you want to save or print it, right or control click to access the contextual menu. You can also port the PDF to Preview via the Contextual Menu.

  • Quesion about preview printing in safari

is there a way to get the print preview to automatically show up when i click the print icon in safari...im using 10.5.2...it seems to do it on my dads admin. account but not on mine

I've been having this same problem with saving pdf files File - Save As from the top Toolbar on my laptop.
I would constantly get messages - There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.
I also downloaded the lateset version of Adobe Reader XI
But at last I have managed to find a simple way to access pdf files from the internet.
Firstly, without downloading the pdf, I printed the pdf file direct from the Safari page by using the Print icon on the grey lozenge that appears centrally three quarters down the screen.
Then I discovered that if I save the pdf using the Save icon from this same grey lozenge on the Safari page I can open and print this pdf version from my desktop.
I've tested it with a couple of different pdf files and these methods work using the grey lozenge icons but the same pdfs files don't work using File - Save As on the Tool Bar.
