Access to WD 500 GB HD connected to Time Capsule on Windows PC

I have a 500 GB WD My Book hard drive connected to 500 GB Time Capsule via USB. I am able to view both hard drives on my MacBook, but I can't view the attached My Book on my Windows PC. Can anyone help? Is it possible to view the My Book on my Windows PC? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure file sharing is turned on and give the TC full access to the guest account. ie read and write
Make sure the WORKGROUP is set correctly.
This is Mac version but is basically the same as the windows version.
Then in Windows Explorer type in the IP of the TC...
\\10.0.1.1 or whatever it is.
If it does ask you for username and password.. admin and public will do nicely.
No luck the windows computer is blocking the access. Ensure no firewall is blocking by turning them all off.. and ensure the computer is set to home location, not work or public.
No luck.. get rid of the USB and plug it in properly by ethernet.
USB to ethernet adapters are bad.

  • Can't connect to Time Capsule from Windows

I have a time capsule that I have set up at work which works great with my laptop (MacBook Pro) at work. However, when I try to map the Time Capsule from home (Windows 7, not the same subnet), I cannot do so.
I have been able to ping it, as well as access the Time Capsule configuration page through the AirPort Utility that I have installed on my Windows machine at home (I do so by going to File...>Configure Other... and then log on). So I can communicate with it but I can't map it using the Windows "Map Network Drive" command.
    Any thoughts?

I figured it out. I had to change the Time Capsule to only allow File Sharing with Accounts. Then, using the "Map Network Drive" and \\ipaddressaccountname and - viola!

  • I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house and the mobile WiFi is our only option). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

    LOL!!
I am in Australia and the ISP... I think both the main ones would fit your description to a T.. big T in particular.
Your router is really unsuitable.. if it is only wireless and no ethernet.. just buy an ethernet one.
Do a search on ebay.. 3g router.
But you can get the TC to join a wireless network.
It is a non-standard setup that Apple will not support.. the option is hidden.
If you are on Lion download the 5.6 utility. Go to the wireless set up page and hold down the option key whilst selecting wireless mode.. a new option, join will appear. You can then put in the ssid and passkey of the 3g router.
But please note the end result of this setup..
very slow speed. The TC is now a second wireless hop from your clients.. this will halve the speed.
In this mode the ethernet are deactived.. for reasons only Apple know, they decided you should not use ethernet when doing this.

  • How do i connect my time capsule from outside my home? i dont have static ip

    sorry about my english...
its been 4 months now and still I am not able to connect my time capsule via internet from outside . i have read enough forums and discussion but i am confused because every discussion has different answer. please anyone can explain me the simplest way to configure my time capsule so i can connect it from other computers. i am using windows 7 64bit os.i am not advance user of networking so please explain me in detail.
    some questions.
    1. is it possible to use time capsule as nas using dynamic ip address?
    2. if yes how and where can i get exact detail about this.
    3. how to connect my time capsule form my iphone, ipad or other computers . connect through ip address or something else?
    4. is it any simple installation way to do this? i heard about bonjour and icloud but dont know how to connect through this.
    please help me
    thank you
    sachin

i am using windows 7 64bit os.i am not advance user of networking so please explain me in detail.
Here is your primary issue.. you cannot connect with win7 ..
Windows only offers SMB protocol which just about every ISP.. all responsible ones ...block..
Time Capule offers AFP to internet and only AFP.
You need to use a Mac to connect.. then use BTMM and iCloud as there is no dyndns in the TC anyway. (Actually there is a dyndns but only for apple btmm use...  you cannot access.
If you want to or have to use windows.. then get a proper vpn router that offers vpn endpoints to windows and has dyndns.. setup the TC in bridge behind the vpn router and access via vpn .. this is the only safe way of connecting using SMB.

  • How do I connect my Time Capsule on my modem wirelessly?

I already have a modem that I use to access the internet wirelessly on my macbook. Is there a way that I can connect my Time Capsule on this modem without having to use an enthernet cable?
    Thanks!

So you are saying that if I use the AirPort Extreme Base Station  I would be able to connect my TC wirelessly and expend my wireless signal at home?
No, please see my previous answer.....
and then use it to expand the internet signal.
That is not possible. The Time Capsule could "extend" the signal only if it is provided by another Apple router.
    What I did say was.....
When the Time Capsule "joins" a wireless network, it simply connects to the network...like another computer. If you configure the Time Capsule this way, it becomes a wireless hard drive. it performs no routing functions and it will need to be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your main wireless router.
I am not recommending that you set up the Time Capsule this way, but will provide the steps if you want.
    So, to clarify....
The Time Capsule can be configured to "join" your existing wireless network. It will not extend or expand the wireless network. The Time Capsule becomes a wireless hard drive in this type of configuration.
I do not recommend this type fo setup for most users because it is difficult to configure and limits backups to wireless only. You will not be able to connect to the Time Capsule using Ethernet to backup, which is much faster than wireless.

  • How do I connect my time capsule to the internet wirelessly

I recently moved to a house where the internet is provided wielessly. So I don't have access to the modem to hook up my Time capsule. Is there away I can hook it up with out connecting it to a modem? If so how might I go about doing so?

Go to the wireless area of the airport setup.. and select wireless mode but hold down the option key.
A new option will present, join wireless network.
This is really poor way to run the TC though. It will stop ethernet working. And you will double hop wireless to the TC.
Would it be possible to have the TC standalone and plugged by ethernet into the computer.. that would be a much better solution. or for the time being just use external drive..

  • Do I need a cable connecting my Time Capsule to Airport Express if I want to use the AE to extend my wifi network range?

I'm a bit confused by conflicting advice given by my local Apple shop and my internet provider.
My cable modem is plugged into a Time Capsule which I use to access the net wirelessly almost all over the house.  The one spot the wireless doesn't quite reach is (of course) where I now need my office and iMac to be.
I thought I could just plug in an Airport Express somewhere in the middle  to extend the network's range but the guy at my local Apple shop said the Airport Express would need to be connected not just to power but to the Time Capsule, via a cable.  That's fiddly and would involve cables running under the floor or along walls and ceilings, not something I can or really want to do.  It's not really practical to try and move the cable connection point either.
My internet provider suggested a netgear wireless extender and said that would only need to be plugged into power.  The reviews of the netgear product I found comparing it to Airport Express suggest that the Express doesn't need to be connected to anything other than power either to extend a network range (which was what I originally thought).
So I'm wondering which advice is correct? I've also read that the netgear product isn't all that easy to set up so I'd rather stick with.   Apple if it will do what I want.
Thanks for any help out there

I thought I could just plug in an Airport Express somewhere in the middle  to extend the network's range but the guy at my local Apple shop said the Airport Express would need to be connected not just to power but to the Time Capsule, via a cable.
I'm sure that the guy at the Apple shop means well, but he is not correct.
While it would be preferable to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection, the Express can connect wirelessly and extend the wireless signal the same way....IF...it is located where it can receive a good wireless signal.

  • How to connect Airport Time Capsule to WD Live TV

I recently bought an Airport Time Capsule with 2tb storage. I am wanting to access the media files I save to the Time Capsule on my WD TV Live. I have tried doing wirelessly and it works but if I shut my computer it disconnects and wont automatically connect to it even if my computer is open. I keep having to delete and readd the Time Capsule as a media share server everytime I want to access the files. What am I doing wrong???
The bigger question I had is since the Time Capsule has a USB port and so does the WD TV, can I just connect them and access the files via usb to usb??? I dont mind using wifi to connect but if it can be done I would rather connect without wifi so that if my internet goes on the fritz I can still watch movies and stuff from the time capsule hard drive.
Thank you all for any and all help!!!

The media files on the TC are in what format? WD Live can read almost any format but it cannot read iTunes Libraries.
There is a fairly long discussion already on getting WD to read movies from a TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5226379?start=0&tstart=0
    Note the info there.
eg SMB naming for the TC.. this is most important. Standard Apple names will be problematic at best.. useless and non-functional at worst. Make sure the WD Live sees everything in the network with standard windows names.
The bigger question I had is since the Time Capsule has a USB port and so does the WD TV, can I just connect them and access the files via usb to usb???
No, you cannot do that. The USB on the TC is for plugging in a printer or a hard disk. It has no access whatsoever to the internal disk.
However the WD live can present its USB disk to the network. So if you simply plug a USB hard disk into the WD live. And you can then copy your movies to the WD over ethernet or wifi (ethernet is obviously faster) but once on the USB drive then it won't matter if the internet is off or even the local LAN and wifi is off as the WD can still play the movies. IMHO that is the best way to do it.

  • I want to backup an external hard drive connected with time capsule

What to do? I want a macbook air but realise that the storage is limited. I want to have en external HDD connected through time capsule or similar to access storage "wirelessly". I want everything backed up automatically through time capsule. I understand time capsule does not back up connected external HDDs unfortunately. If it did my problem would be solved. How should I do? Can a two time capsule solution be possible where one is used för storage and the other for time machine also backing up time capsule nr 1?
I do not want to loose all my photos! They won´t fit a macbook air... I have tried "crash plan" wich is one of many ckoud solutions to try and take care of all my hundreds of GBs but it doesn´t work well. Takes forever to backup and it keeps loosing contact with the external HDD i have connected through the time capsule.
This must be a very common need but I find no good solutions?!
    Thanks!

You are right.. there is no decent solution from Apple..
You need a proper NAS.. not a backup target for TM.. which is what the TC is.
Look at Synology and QNAP.. they are not cheap but will work fine with Macs, TM even although it can be messy setting up. But the real NAS will auto backup to a USB drive.. plus the raid system offers protection against a dead drive.
Some people use a Mac Mini as a server.. (you don't need server version OS on it).. but the disk expansion is going to cost you as much as the true NAS.

  • Ca.t connect to Time Capsule after failed OS update

This is going to be a bit long but here goes:
I was notified of two updates to install this afternoon. I told it to update and partway through the first the system hung. It was a small update and I don't recall what it was, but the second one was a large security update. It never got to that one.
OK, I had to power the system down because it was completely locked up. Upon rebooting it came up fine until it tried to connect to Time Capsule. I typed in my PW and it gave me an incorrect user, PW or login error message. At this point I also could not connect to the internet. Safari gave me a POSIX error: no buffer space available message.
At some point here the status light on TC was flashing yellow. I reset it to the factory defaults to no avail. I still couldn't get into it. I have a clone of the drive so I booted off that and got the same results so that would seem to rule out a corrupted file.
Now for the funny part, I booted into safe mode and I not only had an internet connection, but I was also able to get into the TC setup and everything seems to work fine in safe mode. When I boot into normal mode I am right back to square one. It opens the window for TC and asks for my PW. When I enter it I get the error message about PW/user/login.
And throughout this whole process I was able to access the internet just fine on my PC-BSD machine connected to the router portion of TC. Suggestions anyone?

This mornings update: I can ping so I am getting out. When I click on the network icon in the finder sidebar it comes up empty. When I try to run Netinfo Manager the program stops responding and I have to force quit it. And when I run Airport Utility it actually finds the TC unit, bit when I click continue it comes back after a few seconds and says: An error occured while reading the configuration.
After the please make sure everything is plugged in ,essage I get: (-6753)
Anyone have any idea what is going on here? It almost looks like the Network is information is missing.

  • Connecting to Time Capsule via Ethernet

    Hi,
I'm working on a Tiger OS and I cannot connect to my time capsule. I followed instructions in the manual, but I simply do not see Time Capsule on my desktop, and there is very little info in the manual.
I am working off of ethernet, not airport, and would prefer to used ethernet for the moment. I have it connected via LAN port to my macbook pro. There's only one ethernet port on my computer. Does anyone have any advice? I know about about Macs, but dont have much experience with network specs.
I simply need to archive data, but I cannot see Time Capsule on my desktop. Time Capsule is connected just fine to my modem, but now how do I connect to my computer? I've tried to unplug ethernet from my computer, and into the LAN port on my capsule, but to no avail.
I am absolutely clueless as to how I can use this machine at this point??
    Thanks much.

    Jean,
You probably don't have the Network Preferences set correctly.
Connecting The Time Capsule Via Ethernet
Connect one end of a Cat-5 Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports of the TC (<•••>).
Connect the other end to your Macs ethernet port.
    Open Network Preferences.
At the top change "Location:" to "Ethernet Connection".
In the list on the left "Ethernet" should be at the top of the list. (If not use the Action Menu (gear button) at the bottom to "Set Service Order".)
Click "Apply" in the lower right.
Give it a moment to acquire an IP address from the TC.
    You should now be connected.
    Now begin your initial backup.
Now that you are reconnected to the TC, you should still have internet access during the backup.
Let us know if this was helpful. Next time start a new thread, you're more likely to get helpful responses that way.
    Cheers!

  • Problems connecting to time capsule

    Hi Everyone,
I have a 2011 MBP which I bought in May. A little less than a month ago, I bought a new 2TB time capsule. I was using it as a router and it worked great until I got back home last night to find that I could not connect to the internet and the light on the Time capsule was green. The aiport utility showed that I was connected to the time capsule, but Firefox would not load any pages.  At first, I tried to reboot the router and that did not work (the light was still green and I could not connect to the internet). I rebooted my computer and power cycled the modem, but that didn't change anything either.
The next morning, the problem was still there, but the symptoms were slightly different. I was briefly able to load a couple web pages via Wi-Fi, but at an absolute crawl (~45 seconds to load yahoo). That lasted for a minute or two before I once again was back where I started. I rebooted my computer, the TC and the router numerous times. Each time I did, I would get a different result. Sometimes I would not be able to connect to the TC at all (Aiport Utility couldn't even find it), sometimes, I was able to connect to the time capsule, but with no internet.
I reset the time capsule to the factory default settings, then re-setup my network. This did not seem to change anything. I eventually dug up an ethernet cable and ran that from my computer to the TC and was able to surf the web at reasonable speeds (so I know it's not the ISP). Shortly thereafter, I unplugged the ethernet cable and the Wi-Fi worked perfectly. I thought the problem was fixed, but when I returned to my computer an hour later the Wi-Fi had stopped working. Since then, I have rebooted everything a number of times, but it hasn't fixed anything. At this point, I'm not even able to wirelessly connect to the TC (each time I try, it says connection timeout).
I apoligize for the length and vagueness of the message, but the sporadic nature of the problem makes it difficult to explain. I have absolutely no idea what the problem is, so I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hi, I seem to be having the exact same problem. I have an Airport Express with AirTunes connected to my Time Capsule. Don't know if that could be affecting anything?
Anyways I have intermittent problems with my network as well... after I went into Airport Utility do see if anything needed updating (can't remember what I did in there unfortunately) I lost the connection and when I regained wireless it no longer is able to find the USB-harddrive connected to Time Capsule.
I can still plug it in to my regular mac without problems. Also when Time Machine is running it seems to be running so much slower than before. Any ideas?
Update: I just tried connecting the USB disk to Time Capsule live and in the Finder it pops up under Time Capsule in "Shared", but when I try to access the drive it says "Original item cannot be found"... other times it just hangs for extended periods without finding anything, perhaps the Time Capsule Drive, but again seems very unresponsive.

Bob is ok as a modem.. are you using voip?? If not bridge the bob and use PPPoE client in the TC..
Or use Bob as a full modem router and bridge the TC.. either setup is much of a muchness.

How do I connect my time capsule with a Lynksis wi fi netwotk?

You cannot extend or repeat a non-apple router in an apple router..
You must plug it in via ethernet and then setup roaming network (or if you like a completely separate network.. makes no difference from the TC point of view). TC is in bridge mode. That is router bridge not wireless bridge.. I gave the info on the other thread you are running.. very confusing when you ask in multiple threads.
