Access USB Disk from Win XP connected to Router

Hello,
My Airport express is plugged into cable modem router and so is a desktop running Win XP.
Another 2 machines Macbook and Winxp laptop can access AE router, internet and the USB disk connected to AE.
I am having trouble accessing the USB disk from desktop which does not have wifi and is hooked directly to cable modem router. I tried assigning a static IP to Airport Express and that didnt help either.
Any ideas?

Welcome to the discussions!
You posted in the AirPort Extreme forum, but your post indicates that you have an AirPort Express.
If you have an AirPort Express, this device does not support hard drives at the USB port. Only compatible printers are supported.

  • Accessing Airport Disk from Windows XP

I have a new Airport Extreme with an attached USB disk. I am able to access the disk from my MAC, but when trying to access it from my windows computer I get Unknown user, incorrect password or login is disabled (error 1203). I have tried configuring the disk access with base station password, disk password and user accounts. Have also tried guest login.
I have 2 XP machines. On one I see the airport disk, on the other I don't. On neither can I access the files. The one that totally does not work has no firewall installed. T
The application I am using is Airport base station agent on the PC. The airport utility on both PC works fine. Running 7.2.1 firmware on the base station
    Help apprecited.

An update (and maybe some help to someone with a similar problem). I still can't get the airport base station agent to work, but I have succeeded in mounting the disk manually. Had some problem with the syntax, but it is \\172.16.1.1\diskname where 172.16.1.1 is the address of the airport base station and the discname is what it says it is. Don't try to add the name of the base unit into the path. I set it up with disc password (don't know if his makes a difference). And obviously if you have the airport in bridged mode, this will not help, since the unit will not have an IP address

When I connect the USB dongle from the camera connection kit I get an accessory not supported by iPad message. The card reader triggered the same msg but works now. Same msg with vga. Thanks Fred. The nearest Apple store is about two hours away, so we did the next best thing & took it to Best Buy. It stumped the "Apple Guy" there. Apparently when an Apple product is turned on it works. Period. I'm impressed that the products are normally so dependable--it just stinks that I got the one in a million that's not. Anyway, now we wait for a service call Tuesday morning. Thanks again!

  • Airport Extreme USB Disk Sharing using MobileMe - Connection Failed...

After several hours of troubleshooting i've hit a brick wall.
I have just bought a brand new Airport Extreme Base Station (Dual Band etc) and it is all set up and working lovely.
I have now come to share my USB Disk using my MobileMe account. Add my mobile account to the configuration page, all ok still.
Connect to a completely different network (second home), where my Airport Extreme (William Moore's Airport Extreme) is present in the finder under Shared. However, when I proceed to connect to it, i am firstly presented with connecting.... and after it has failed the first time, each subsequent attempt immediately fails.
At first i could not access the configuration page remotely for the Extreme either - but after bypassing the firewall on my router i can now remotely connect to my extreme every time - but still the same above issue with connecting to the USB disk.
The router at my second home is currently a belkin router - although i have an airport express coming soon which i hope will resolve the problem and point to my current router setup - but this cannot be a long term solution as the express is to be used elsewhere.
However, i fail to see how my router is stopping the disk connection when i am able to receive the extreme's configuration. NAT is enabled on my router, as is upnp.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am an IT Technician myself, and this is driving me crazy!

Thanks for those links - i'll look at the powering down tomorrow as the Airport isn't at the property i'm at at the minute.
However, I can safely say the airport is configured just as in the first link. Like i said, I can remotely access the airport so can verify that from here.
The article regarding the formatting of the disk is also interesting. I have tried three disks, each with the same end result (not being able to remotely connect) but all have been slightly different formatting.
    1) 500gb HFS+ formatted, single partition, my timemachine disk
    2) 500gb - 450gb HFS+ partition - 50gb FAT32 partition - interestingly, although according to that article two partitions aren't supported - both mounted perfectly when I was connected to my airport locally
    3) 8gb FAT32 formatted USB Stick - same thing - fine locally, cannot connect remotely.
Come to think of it - i did read somewhere that the usb port isn't (hot-swappable) so maybe the complete power off and on may solve the problem - but i fail to see how this is different technically to a restart through the software - and doubt very much it will fix the issue - but i will definitely give it a go tomorrow.
Any other idea's or people in the same situation would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

  • Accessing Time Capsule From Any Internet Connection

Could you please tell me if it will be possible to access Time Capsule from any internet. I would like to put all my files on the device and be able to access these while out on the road.
Thanks in advance for your help
    Cheers Steve

Yes, you certainly can (right now) remotely access the hard drive attached to your AEBSn. I will refer you to "Step 4" in Apple's article Sharing a USB hard disk on your network for instructions on enabling this feature. To access the disk remotely (and don't test this from a computer on your own LAN) select "Connect to Server" from the Finder's "Go" menu, and enter the public IP address of your Base Station.
I have to admit the specs for Time Capsule don't explicitly indicate that Time Capsule will support this feature. However, given this feature is available on the AEBSn and is easy to implement, I would be very surprised if Apple took away this feature when they designed Time Capsule.

  • Can't Access USB disk attached to Time Machine

When I try to access a disk attached to my Time machine USB port, I get the message :The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “Untitled” can’t be found.   I can access the disk normally in a direct attached mode USB port on my MBP .  Running 10.7.5.  The WEN=B has some discussions on the same problem but no definitive solution.   Everything worked a few weeks ago.  Do not remember changing anything but might have done some software upgrade (from Apple).

I tried the same disks on my other Appe router (Time Machine ), and it works .   Still not on my Airport Extreme - note I said Time Machne in the original post, should have said Airpirt Extreme.

  • Accessing usb drive from a connection kit

I have a thing called 'HDMI & AV Connection Kit for iPad' I plugged it into my iPad 3 and put a USB flash drive into the USB hole. How do I access the USB flash drive from the iPad? I cannot find a way to navigate to it.
If anyone knows what I do, or what app I need to get to do this I would be very grateful
    Thanks
    Dave

You can't. Not in the way I think you want it.
The CCK will only work to import photos and videos. You could put some photos on a USB drive and then import htem into your iPad. Those photos must follow a very rigid naming convention (be in a folder named DCIM and have a file name of exactly 8 characters, like DSC_4483, same with movies)
there is no protocol to import documents or the such. and there is no protocol to export anything with the CCK.

  • Airport Extreme, can't see usb disk from media player

I have a WD hard drive (formatted in FAT32) connected to my Airport Extreme. I can access it from my MacBook and I can see it under disks in Airport Utility. When I try to access the drive wirelessly from my Merlin media player (that's connected to my TV), the drive doesn't show up under the Airport Extreme Workgroup. I should mention that when the drive is plugged into my MacBook, I CAN access the drive on my media player under my MacBook's Workgroup. So I'm assuming the issue is with the Airport allowing the drive to be seen, and not the format of the drive itself. Can anyone help?

By default, when you enable "File Sharing" in the AirPort Utility, your AirPort Extreme will share out an attached USB HDD with either Macs or PCs.
To access the shared HDD from a Windows 7 PC:
Start > Computer > Map network drive
Drive: <use default or select a drive letter>
Folder: \\<AirPort's Base Station Name or IP Address>\<HDD's Volume Name>
User name: <Enter Base Station Administrator name>
Password: <Enter Base Station Administrator password>

  • Remotely access usb western digital 2tb storage connected to airport

Hi everyone, just wanted get some feedback on this set up, if it is possible, and how to configure the settings properly. I want my Netgear n600 router Version 1 + Airport Express + WD 2tb hard drive to = a personal cloud that I can remotely access. I have a netgear n600 WNDR3400 that has a 2.4ghz and a 5.0ghz  wifi network capability. I 30-30-30 flashed the netgear n600 router so that I have dd-wrt firmware( DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/08/11) mega) running on the router instead of the restrictive built-in netgear web interface. I have an Airport Express 802.11g version 6.3 that I have connected to the netgear n600 router via ethernet cable. Connected to the airport express, via usb 2.0, is a Western Digital 2tb hard drive (externally powered). When I am booted up from the internal macbook pro hard drive mac side (I also have Bootcamp Windows 7 installed that I can boot from) my mac's time machine application starts backing up to the WD hard drive when I connect the usb hard drive to my macbook pro. The entire WD hard drive is formatted as HFS+, however I am considering partitioning the WD at least 3 ways, 1250 gigs HFS+ for mac storage, 500 gigs NFTS for windows storage, 250 gigs for unux / linux storage to host my website. I want to remotely access the WD storage space connected to the Airport Express, specifically, each individual hard drive partition based upon what remote system I am using and the respective partition storage format. If I am on a windows computer, I want to have a 500 gig "cloud" that I can access any computer via a windows Start -> Run or map the network drive. I want the same home server ability as a 1250 gig cloud that any mac can access. I want to have remote read or write priviledges when I connect to this server through the mac finder. Similarly, I want to connect through a linux terminal to have access to my 250gig partition for unix. One last thing, I want to host my website on the WD plugged into my Airport Express. Does anyone have any suggestions what dd-wrt settings I need to change to make this work? I do not understand port forwarding very well at all. I think I understand that I need to have a static ip address and then forward the ports.  I just do not know what to set my static ip to, or what settings I need to change in the dd-wrt web interface for forwarding ports. Can anyone please tell me which ports do I forward to remotely access my usb storage and personal website? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Much obliged, Keento

    The Express doesn't support HDDs.

  • What do i need to access my files from any internet connection

I'm a bit confused, i've found some good videos on youtube on setting up the server but can't get the file shareing to work (of course the only reason i got the server). Some have told me i need a dyns routing service, so i used machighway.com but i still could not connect to my server from any internet conection outside of my home wifi. Now i've been told that i need VPN to be able to do that. So i'm hoping that someone can help clear this up and point me in the right direction. I can connect to the server using my Mac book air over my wifi (using an airport extreme). please help, i've had this server for half a year and have yet to be able to use it for what i intended.
(i upgraded the server to OS X Mountan Lion, and upgraded the app to OS X Server)

    Here's how I did it.
-Open a free account at no-ip.org
-Download their app, change your server's hostname to the hostname you selected for your brand new no-ip.org account. Ideally you'd perform this step on a clean install of the Server since changing the hostname can mess a lot of the services up.
-You'll be able to tell it's working by enabling the Websites service and visiting your new no-ip.org hostname in a web browser. You should see the default server page.
If you have follow up questions for me, I don't read this forum much but I am on reddit a lot and I'm trying to start a new subreddit for mac servers: http://reddit.com/r/macserver . Post a thread on there.

  • DSL uses USB port - how can I connect BEFW router

DSL Modem connected to BEFW11s4 V.4 router and desktop computer connected port #1 to Ethernet card ...  wireless laptop and wired desktop worked fine.   Then Desktop stopped having a connection ...  wireless units worked fine.
Swapped Desktop cable to port #2 ....  Port #1 light remained lit although nothing was plugged in to it.  Port #2 light didn't light ... and no desktop connection.  Wireless still worked.
Connected DSL to desktop ethernet card ... didn't work (no router involved).
Connected DSL to computer thru USB prot ... desktop worked fine   however I saw no way to connect router so wireless would work.
I reset DSL, Router and deleted and re-installed the ethernet card .... reinstalled all software ...   no luck.
Should I gather that I have a router failure in the wired area and the wireless still be working?    I'm at wits end      Any thoughts would be appreciated
    Thanks

in rural area .. no doubt about wireless signal being from my router.   I deleted and re-installed ethernet card (HP computer -- ethernet part of motherboard ... not separate card).  DSL to ethernet card failed ...  "failure to connect".
Used DSL to USB as a last ditch effort...   worked ...   but don't know a way to connect router if using DSL to Desktop thru USB port.
Could ethernet part of motherboard have failed?  and rest be working fine?
network connections shows ethernet card and 1394 icon.
ethernet card doesn't show "yellow triangle" in hardware set-up ... but status doesn't show an IP address, subnet mask or default gateway .....   1394 shows no action of any sort.
I may be hopeless ...   maybe a system restore might find what I'm missing??

  • Mac loses internet after wake from sleep, still connected to router

    Hi All,
So, I see similar threads, but I'm not sure if this is the same problem. Here's what happening:
-When I wake my Mac from sleep it usually (but not always) loses its internet (but not wifi) connection.
-The loss happens 10-15 seconds AFTER it wakes up. If I go to Safari/Firefox right after it wakes up, I can bring up webpages fine for about 10 seconds. Then, suddenly, pages stop loading.
-The wifi stays connected (I have an airport router) the whole time, and if I go to the airport utility, everything looks fine.
-I know this is not a problem with my internet or my router because I have tried opening web pages on both my iPhone (connected to wifi with cellular off) as well as my PC laptop (I only have it for one program that the company does not make for the Mac and I need for work, haha), and both browse the internet just fine even though my Mac says there is no internet.
-If I restart my Mac, the internet works fine. This is a simple fix, however it's also annoying to have to do it all the time.
-This is happening in different locations, not just on my wifi. It happens in coffee shops, hotels, and airports too.
-Not sure if this is related, but I have also been getting messages in iTunes saying that I need to authorize my computer or apps will be deleted.
-I completely deleted Norton, as I had a hunch it was responsible for this problem (since the internet was disconnecting right after getting an "add location" message from that program). However, even with it completely off my computer, I'm still having the issues.
    Any suggestions???

What Mac OSX version are you running? "iOS 8.2" as currently shown in your profile cannot run on any Mac computer, only Apple mobile devices.
If your computer has automatically connected to a lot of networks, say, during travel, that might hinder waking as the computer looks for what networks it remembers. Go to System Preferneces > Network and select your wirelss connection from the left-hand pane. Then click the "Advanced" button in the main pain. That will show the list of networks you Mac has stored:
There could be a lot. Clear out all networks stored there except those you use on a weekly basis. The little box with the "-" icon clears unwanted networks. Restart the computer and see if thising work better.
-I completely deleted Norton, as I had a hunch it was responsible for this problem (since the internet was disconnecting right after getting an "add location" message from that program). However, even with it completely off my computer, I'm still having the issues.
Download and run Etrecheck, a safe way to post a snapshot of your config without revealing any personal information. I'm concerned you did not get all of Norton, or have some other dreck like CleanMyMac or MacKeeper lurking.

  • Folders added to USB disk connected to EA6700 not seen by Panasonic TV

    Hello,
    I have a Seagate 1.5TB USB ST315005EXA101-RK connected to EA6700.
The USB disk contains two folders with pictures, and they are fully visible in the Panasonic TV.
Today I added some other folders to the USB disk, but they are not seen in the Panasonic TV.
Shall I remove .tmp & cache folders in the USB disk in order to let EA6700 show all folders in the TV ?

Sorry for not replying to this forum earlier. I have been busy with other tasks.
I disconnected the USB disk from EA6700, and connected it to my PC.
Then I removed .tmp and cache folders, and connected the disk back to EA6700.
Now I see all pictures on TV,
The lesson from this problem is to reconnect the disk to PC and remove .tmp & cache folders.

  • Airport USB Disk - access from PC?

I have set up my USB disk in my Airport utility, trying all three options (accounts, disk password, and device password).  I cannot find it in Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer to access it.
    What is the trick?
    Thanks,

There are a number of posts related to accessing AirPort Disks from Windows Vista / 7 PCs. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
    To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name.
From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab.
On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Moving TM disk from Network to USB: cannot see previous backups

    Hi,
I have decided to move my external USB disk from the Airport Extreme USB port to my computer USB port to speed up backups and restores.
Unfortunately it seems that I cannot see anymore previous backups in the disk using TM.
The disk was accessed through the network and it was setup to have user level access to it: each user have his folder on the disk.
So, what I have done is to move back the disk to my computer, I have run disk utility to check and fix the disk since when the drive is attached to the AE with user privileges, it will report errors once you connect back to the computer. Once that permission errors were addressed, I have moved the time machine backup to the disk root and I have told TM to use this new disk as backup location.
Then I have made a new backup to the disk and it seems that TM was able to detect the previous backups because it has added only few GB to the backup.
Then I have moved to a random folder were I have made changes, and I have started TM: when I do that, TM window will switch me back to "MyComputer" where I can see all drives.
I can move around but I am unable to move back in time, like there are no other backups.
TM backup file is about 140 GB and I can fully access it by using finder: I see that all previous data is there, but TM cannot see it.
I have not changed computer name,
I have tried to use the TM option to "open other TM disks" but It doesn't show any other disk in the select window.
Does anybody know what is happening and how I can try to fix?
    thanks!

    Thanks for the replies,
I would like to move from a wired network TM backup to a local firewire/USB backup.
So the first error I have made is to have deleted the user directory in the Airport Extreme external USB disk: I have moved the TM sparse bundle file to the new location but I didn't noticed that other hidden files were there.
Second, I was unable to browse the older TM backups using TM and it seems that I cannot "browse other TM backups" using such TM option because the window were not showing me any drive.
I have then realized that I have to mount the sparse bundle to see it in such TM option: then it seems to work perfectly.
So there is no need for me to find a solution to use again the same backup with the local disk: if I need something in future I will use the TM option to browse other backups and I think I will be able to recover any file from there. May be I cannot recover mails in this way.
I think it is also possible to fix by using the procedure listed in the previous link: I didn't try just because I don't want to spend more time on this issue and because I have not enough free space on other drives... but...
    ...it should be enought to:
    1- connect a new drive to the computer;
    2- mount the old TM sparse bundle image;
    3- use SuperDuper to copy all contents of mounted sparse bundle image into the new attached drive;
contents of the sparse bundle image seems to be equal to the structure and names used by a new fresh backup on a local USB disk, so I suppose that it could work... if someone wants to try a tell if it is so... thanks!
