Accessibility for external drive.......

Ive just purchased one of these external hard drives......
http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/iomega-minimax-desktop-external-hard-drive-2-tb-sil ver-and-white-07023323-pdt.html?srcid=867&xtor=AL-89
It will sit under my Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, and will be connected to the AEBS via USB. I can then connect my other drives into the back of this new one, as and when need be, due to the built in hub.
Anyway, if I partition the drive and move my iTunes media onto the drive - I will be able to access it fine from my system - but if I purchase an Apple TV, for example, will it be able to connect to the iTunes library on the external drive, without my MacBook being switched on?? So, in other words, would the Apple TV see the media n the external drive completely independently without relying on another system running iTunes itself?

Would the process be the same as if the drive was connected directly?
yes.
with the drive connected to the AEBS and mounted on your desktop, i would copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) over.
then, launch iTunes while pressing option on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and select the iTunes folder you just copied to the airdisk.
Or would I be better off connecting the drive directly initially for the transfer, then removing it and connecting it to the AEBS?
no.

  • Cannot access shared external drive on iMac from Windows 7

Used to be able to access this drive with no problem from any of my PC's. Sent iMac in for repair and system drive was wiped so I'm starting from clean install of Leopard. Did all the updates first including 10.6.4 which wasn't on before the system drive died.
    Firewall is off
    SMB is on
Everyone as well as main user has read write access to external drive
iMac is in the same workgroup as machine, although it wasn't before and it worked fine.
PC can ping the IP of the iMac and get a response, can see the iMac in list of networked computers
but cannot access anything on it.
Windows 7 network diagnostics says "file and print sharing resource (JMGIMAC) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts" "The remote computer isn't responding to connections on port 445
    I've tried everything, any ideas

I am familiar with the instructions for sharing files and have followed them (several times I might add).
My problem is that the information that I place in the WINS tab ( in the Network Preference Pane) disappears when the iMac is re-started. This information (especially the Workgroup name) must appear when the computer re-boots. It doesn't and I have to re-enter the information in the iMac before I can access its files from a Windows PC.
I have searched the internet for days trying to find an answer to this question. Although the problem seems to be fairly common, no solutions have been found.

  • Can't Access My External Drive

My external drive was setup to allow access under my account name. I will be getting a new mac soon. I wanted to be able to use the external drive on the new mac. I accessed the external drive and set the permission to "system" to allow universal access. Somehow I managed to mess up permissions or something and I can no longer get access to the drive. I can see the drive using the disk utility but repairing the drive is grayed out. Not sure what to do? Help.

Hi Dansyacht, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Open Terminal & paste this in, spaces are important...
    chmod 777 /Volumes/
then right after the last /, carefully type the name of that external volume, & if it has spaces in it enclose the name in quote marks.

  • Can I disable trash for external drives?

    Hello,
Is it possible to disable the Trash for external drives so that files from external drives are completey deleted automatically, or else moved to the trash on my internal hard drive? The problem that I am trying to solve is, for example, when I download pictures from my camera, if I want to make more space available on the camera, I have to first delete the pictures from the camera, and then empty my trash, since deleting the pictures from the camera only moves them to a hidden folder called ".Trash". I would prefer if I didn't have to empty the trash every time I wanted to free up room on my camera external hard drive.
    Thanks very much,
    Adrian

It isn't without its risks, but another option may be to ⌘-drag the files to the hard drive, which will simulate a "move" by copying the files to the hard drive then deleting them from the external. If something goes wrong during the transfer, it may be difficult in some situations to determine which files were being copied at the time - ie. which ones were potentially corrupted. It might be ok as a cleanup procedure after the files have been imported normally, but then you end up sitting through the process of copying them to the hard drive a second time - you might as well just toss them in the "Trash". Also, if a large number of files is involved, just don't accidentally drop them on the "Desktop" because the "Finder" can't handle it. Obviously, I'm not a fan of the method, but it's there as an option...

  • Extremely Slow Disk Access from External Drives (USB & Firewire)

Following the upgrade to 10.6.2 (from 10.6.1), my computer is communicating extremely slowly with all external drives (both Firewire 400 and USB). File transfers which used to take less than a minute now take 5-10 minutes (less than 1 GB). Peering into the Console, I see messages for each aspect of a file reading: Nov 13 12:30:12 Nautilus /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[152]: Possible unresolved transaction race -105/filename
(Nautilus is the name of the computer)
By "each aspect", I mean that for Pages files, it provides a message for Quicklook,(null) , Contents,(null) , and filename,(null).
All disks are in good health, formatted as FAT32 for ease of use with all OS types, and are SATA.
Again, this occurred immediately following the installation of 10.6.2 (both Software Update and Combo). I've seen similar errors online with iTunes libraries on network drives, but this is on directly connected drives.
I normally wouldn't ask this, but, is there a way to reinstall 10.6.1 over .2? At this point, Time Machine would likely cause me to lose other data as well in a full revert, since it has been more than a few days.

I have various personal files backed up on these drives (not system data): music, pictures, documents, etc.
FAT32 should not be an issue, as I have used these drives for over 2 years with Tiger, Leopard, and then Snow Leopard with nay an issue, until now. Additionally, while the Time Machine backup may be an archive, it is the sole occupier of an HFS-formatted partition which is not exhibiting the issue. I only included that information since it is physically on the same drive as a partition (FAT32) which is being troublesome to rule out driver/hardware problems.
Bottom line: All of my drives worked perfectly on 10.6.1 (and continue to do so on my other Macs (10.5.8), but do not on 10.6.2. I was only looking for a potential solution to my computer's specific issue, not a statement that my "compromise" is the cause of my problems.
Actually, since Apple fully supports read/write access on FAT32 partitions, I should, indeed, be able to "have all things all ways...", no offense intended.

  • Cannot regain access to external drives.

The USB external hard drives attached to my Mac Pro, which is running 10.6.8, are not allowing me access, saying I do not have permission. There is a lock on the desktop icon for each of them. I tried changing them in the Get Info box but all permission settings revert back to saying "custom" immediately. I also tried using Disk Utility to repair permissions and repair the disks without success.
It all started after I tried to share the drives on my local network using the Sharing control panel in System Preferences. There were many, many messages that came up saying such and such file (each file name was different) could not be modified but I thought I clicked on the option that would not affect those files, leaving them unchanged.
One of the drives is used primarily as a Time Machine back up drive. the other has a lot of irreplaceable data on it. I would like to recover the latter rather than reformat it. I could reformat the Time Machine drive if necessary, but I would rather not.
Also, I cannot perform an fsck -yf in single user mode (command & S at start up) and my drawing tablet is no longer available for use.
Perhaps the system on the Mac Pro is hosed and needs to be reinstalled. Do you think that will fix it?
All help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have the exact same issue! Whats the deal...
Cant copy too or from any type of external drive. This is ludicrous!
File appears for a split second then dissapears. I coppied a document to a usb drive and left to work, plugged in my usb drive and whoops! I thought to myself "No way i remember copying it"
Luckily i had also saved to dropbox!
    Apple do something!
Tried mac journaled and FAT32...no luck.

  • Lost network access to external drives

Hi, I'm using Leopard on my MacBook Pro and my iMac. My iMac has several external FW and USB drives connected. They use Mac OS Extended Filesystem (Journaled).
I have AFP and SMB sharing turned on in my System Preferences. The only folder that's listed as shared is my home folder.
It used to be on my MBP, I can browse to my iMac in Finder, and it would show my home folder plus all my external hard drives. I would be able to click on the drives and start using them like any network mounts.
All of a sudden these drives are no longer showing up when I browse. I only see my home folder listed.
However I plugged in another drive via USB on my iMac... this is a FAT32 drive. It automatically showed up in the list of shares I can connect to on the iMac, just like how my external drives used to be.
I haven't made changes to System Preferences or to the Sharing pane.
In the Sharing pane, I tried specifying one of my FW drives as shared, but that didn't work. I've made sure the share has read & write permission for my account, and read permission for everyone. On a separate note, I'm not able to set the permission for everyone to "No access". That option is greyed out. I can only choose Read or Read & Write.
However, even with that, I can't see this new share in the list of shares I can connect to from my MBP.
Does anyone know where I went wrong? Thank you!

I had the same problem. I repaired permissions and now all is well.

  • Write access to External Drives

I am a brand new Apple user and am having some problems with my external drives. It seems I only have read access to the drives when I plug in to my MacBook Pro. I have set myself up as Admin and have allowed myself to administer my computer, but I'm not sure why I can't write to the disk. Is there somewhere I need to set up this as a preference or change permissions? Or is it a problem with the drive being formatted for Windows (NTFS)? I don't think this is the case since I can read files from the drive with no problems. When I go to Disk Utility the option to view permissions is greyed out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it is NTFS then you will only be able to read from it. You can check the drive in "Disk Utility" (In the "Utilities" folder) and see what the format and partition scheme for the drive is. Use the "information" button at the top after you've selected the volume (not the drive, but the volume underneath it) to see the format information. A simple reformat to "Mac OS Extended" format should make the drive usable in OS X.

  • Disable write access to external drives via USB & FW400/800

We have a Mac Pro on our AD network. We want to disable users from having write access to external HDD through USB or FireWire so that they cannot possibly copy data to a attached USB/firewire drives.
    Is this possible?

  • Read/write access on external drive set to none; can't see drive to change

I was learning about profiles and permissions and set the Read/write access on my external drive to none. I wanted to protect my guests from accidentally viewing private files. I thought I was doing it for that profile only, but now I can't see the drive to change it back. I have already tried using the disk utitility and re mounting the drive, but still cannot see the drive icon on the desktop or anywhere. I know the drive is okay because I can see it in disk utility but disk utility says the read/write access is none.
thanks for anyone that can advise me. I'm more of a PC expert, than a Mac expert.

Follow the instructions in this FAQ which are relevant to your situation; logging in as root is not needed.

  • CS6 Bridge freezes up on my Mac when I access an external drive

I get an error message to purge my cash almost every time I start Bridge. I should have taken care of this before but didn't because it didn't keep me from doing what I needed to do. Now I've added my external drives and whenever I try to access them, it freezes up as well as giving me the message to purge my cash. It also never loads any images and looks like it's just running. Now I can't get it to do anything even when I force quit and restart it, and I'm stuck! Any suggestions? I have an iMac that is a year old, OSX Mavericks, CS6 with all updates. Thank you!

A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,

exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CC", but something like CC2014.v.2.2) and of Bridge,

Try rebuilding both your Photoshop and your Bridge preferences:
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop or Bridge, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?", in Bridge click Yes to all three options.
Note: If this process doesn't work for you while you're using a wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard, attach a wired keyboard and retry.
Important: If you re-create the preferences by manually deleting the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings file, make sure that you only delete that file. If you delete the entire settings folder, you also delete any unsaved actions or presets.
Reinstalling Photoshop does not remove the preferences file. Before reinstalling Photoshop, re-create your preferences.
NEW Video! Julieanne Kost created a video that takes you through two ways of resetting your Photoshop preferences. The manual preference file removal method is between 0:00 - 5:05. The keyboard shortcut method is between 5:05 - 8:18. The video is located here:

  • How do I make Time Machine NOT access my external drive?!?!?

Even though Time Machine is turned off it keeps accessing my external HD. About every 10 minutes it will run the drive for a short time, the drive used to just sit nice & quiet until I wanted to read/write to it, now the constant on/off cycle is driving me nuts.
Is there any way to stop OSX 10.5 from doing what it's doing??

Because something keeps spooling up the drive @ every 10-20 minutes. Before I upgraded to 10.5 everything worked normally. The drive would just sit nice & quiet & idle until I wanted to read/write to it. Then it would become active, as expected.
Now, however, something in 10.5 is accessing the drive, and running it, for some mysterious reason. Like I said, this happens about every ten minutes or so and it's very annoying.
I realize that I haven't set-up Time Machine, I don't want to use it, this is a work computer that already has several layers of redundant back-up, so I really have no interest in using Time Machine right now.
So if it's not Time Machine activating the drive does anyone have any other ideas? This never occurred before installing 10.5, which leads me to believe that there's something in the OS responsible for this.

You didn't post the result of the second "id" Terminal command but I assume you are "Don" and if so, you indeed don't have access to "Lacie."
    Try the following:
In Terminal, copy-paste the following command, click inside the Terminal window, and type Return.
    chmod 755 /Volumes/Lacie
If you don't get an error message, log out of your account and log back in. Do you now see the Lacie icon?
    As a side issue
    drwxr-x--- 351 Don Don - 11968 Oct 26 10:02 LaCie 1
It looks as if the permissions on your "good" drive, "LaCie 1", are also abnormal - they look OK for your own account, but not for "others". Since you can see the "LacCie 1" icon on the desktop, you don't need to use Terminal. Right-click on "LaCie 1", Get Info, and look at the Ownership & Permissions details at the bottom. I think "Others" will show "No Access". This is OK if you deliberately want to prevent other users from accessing this volume, but if not, the normal setting for Others is "Read Only". If you do change Others to Read Only, DON"T click the "Apply to enclosed items" button.
