Accessing a shared printer on a PC

Situation: Two computers on a wireless network. a) MacBook connects to Internet wirelessly using Airport. b) Dell laptop (Vista) also connects to the wireless router - no problem. A Brother HL-1500 printer is connected to the laptop (using Ethernet).
Problem: How do I get to use the printer from the MacBook?
I have set the printer to be shared on the Dell but still can't see it when I try to add a printer using the Macbook Print & Fax Preferences

As you have seen, 98 doesn't give you the option to change the account details you are using to connect. So what you can do is either create an account on the Mac that is the same as that you are using on 98, or create an account on 98 that exists on the Mac and use this account to logon to 98.

  • Accessing Windows shared printer, no GIMP driver for Canon iP3000. Options?

I checked a few pages worth of threads but couldn't find a solution to my problem.
Finally accessing my Windows shared printer. I have a Canon iP3000 and it doesn't print when I use the generic driver. I tried selecting the GIMP "Canon BJC 3000" driver but the prints end up shrunken to about a quarter of the paper size (8.5"x11"), my paper was set up and configured correctly. Any options for correcting this?
I had planned on connecting the printer to my MacBook Pro but all the support I could find was for sharing from Windows, so if anyone knows a good resource for such a setup, that'd help too.

There are new versions of Gimp-Print, now called Gutenprint, coming out on a regular basis. Check if the latest has your model:

  • Accessing iMac shared printer from Vista

I have a Canon MP470 connected to my leopard iMac and it works fine from the iMac. I have set it to Share.
On my Vista laptop I can see it and add it as the default printer. But nothing actually prints. When I open the status of the printer in Vista I see Access Denied, unable to connect.
I have installed Bonjour - but to be honest not really sure what that is or whether I needed to configure it or not...
    Any ideas...
    Eric

after installing bonjour... there should be an add printer option in the Bonjour folder off the Start > All Programs menu.
if you installed it using add printer under Printers and Faxes... it likely won't work right. Bonjour is a app that allows for easy networking of computers, drives, and other shared devices... including apps like iChat and iTunes sharing. It's pretty swanky and works really well in my experience compared to other windows protocols.

  • Accessing windows shared printer via mac over wireless

So i want to share my deskjet 812c thats attached to my pc and be able to print via my MBP over wireless. I simply shared teh printer in windows, but have yet been able to figure it out, or to get it to work. It seems that the MBP will not see the printer, so any advice or any walk throughs would be appreciated.
    Thanks

To connect to a shared Windows printer, open the Printer Setup Utility and click More Printers. For the new window, click the drop-down and select Windows Printing and then Network Neighborhood. The workgroup name that has been configured in the Windows computer should display. Double-click the workgroup name and then select the computer name from the new list. A new window will appear asking you to enter your Windows account name and password. Enter these details and click OK. Select the printer share name from the list and then for the Printer Model, browse to HP and then to the Deskjet 812C. If this model is not listed, download a copy of Gutenprint 5.0.0 for Mac OS X (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3). This has the 812C which you can use for network printing. With the 812C selected, click Add.
Note that if you are not prompted to authenticate to the Windows computer, then this can impact your ability to connect to shares, especially on XP SP2. You will need to either enable the Guest account or create an account on the Windows computer for the MacBook.

  • Problem Connecting to Shared Printer on Leopard from Windows XP

    Hey guys,
Just installed Leopard yesterday, and I have a Canon PIXMA MP160 printer connected via USB.
I have set the printer to be Shared, and enabled Printer Sharing in the Sharing preferences.
However, when I try and connect to the printer from a Windows XP laptop, it says: Access Denied, Unable to Connect.
I imagine that this is because I would have provide a username / password combo in order to access the network resources on my Leopard machine. I just can't figure out how to send the credentials, or disable the login necessity if needs be.
If this isn't the problem, or if it cannot be fixed then the alternative is to connect the printer to my router, which shares it via SMB. Now that's fine when I want to connect to it from Windows, but I can't figure out a way to set it up on Leopard.
The MP160 driver that comes with Leopard isn't marked as "Modern" which, according to the documentation means that it cannot be used to install IP or Windows Shared printers.
So my question is, to sum up, is there a way to fix the access problem when trying to access a shared printer on Leopard from Windows, and is there any way I can install and use the printer from Leopard while its shared from my Router via SMB?
    Thanks in advance.
    Edit:
I just thought it would be helpful to say that I'm able to connect and browse through SMB shares from Windows Systems, and I'm able to connect and browse through shared volumes on Leopard from Windows. It's just the printing that's not playing fair.

I had Bonjour for Windows working on two XP machines before I upgraded to Leopard. After that when the Bonjour printer would not work I deleted it from the XP machines and re-ran the Bonjour Setup App. It can find the printer every time, but it will not finish and will give me an error instead.
I've also verified that I have Printer Sharing turned on and the printer is specifically set to be shared. I'm out of ideas.
Has anyone heard reports of Bonjour 1.0.4 not working with Leopard or just being buggy under similar circumstances? If that's not the problem, then I must be missing something. Suggestions welcome.

  • Waking G5 sharing printer

Does anyone know of a way to easily wake a G5 over a local network to access a shared printer?
I can use Remote Desktop, but I'm looking for a quick and easy way that any user on the network can use to print thru the G5 if it is asleep.
The G5 is always on and has all the shared printers hooked to it by USB, but it is on the second floor and not convienient to keep awake all the time.
I had an Airport Express (my old print server) go bad and really don't want to spend $100 to get the D-Link wireless print server for my DI-524 router.
If a user could just wake the G5 easily - this would do it!
    Any ideas - Thanks!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Your Mac supports a "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access" option. You can find this option in the Energy Saver preference pane (click the Option button).
Once set, your Mac will wake from sleep if you send it a wake-on-lan packet. The problem is that the only well know application that can do that is Apples Remote Desktop.
However, there are some scripts that will do the job, provided you know the IP of the Mac you want to wake up.
Check out the following for more info:

  • Why can't I access shared printer options anymore?

I have an iBook that I use to print wirelessly to the printer connected the iMac. Previously I had no problem accessing all available printer options.
Now, for some reason it's changed. When I attempt to Print and after choosing Shared Printers like before....
I'm only able to choose what appear to be generic options.
Needless to say it's very frustrating and quite inconvenient. Is there anything I can do to ensure full access again?

Try installing the same driver on the iBook as that installed on the iMac. Run the same Canon iP3000 installer first and then add the printer via the Printer Setup Utility, selecting the Shared Printer in the Default Browser view.

  • Printing from Windows 8 to a shared printer on a Windows 7 machine

WE have a a user that has a laser printer on A windows 7 machine that others in the office can access EXCEPT the one person on a Windows 8 machine. We have tried everything, but cannot get her to print to this printer. Says it cannot be found. What does
Windows 8 need to see a printer on a Win 7 workstation. She does have access to network printers and her own.
    Thanks.

We have the same kind of problem but a bit different.
Dell Printer (used for years shared on a network) was moved to our Windows 7 machine plugged in via USB.  We only use a plain workgroup with no Domain as we also have Macs on the network.
I have Macs using shared printer, a Windows XP using the shared printer, and even Windows 7 under Parallels on the Macs using the shared printer no problem.
I had the lone Windows 8 laptop using the shared printer but then it just stopped working.  So I deleted it and now when I try to add it is want credentials and none work.  It will not connect to the shared printer on the Windows 7 machine.
I have Windows 7 (which also has a couple shared drives that do work) set for No Homegroup and No Password for sharing - pretty much open as we are behind a Cisco Firewall to the outside.  No firewalls on the pcs.
Not sure where to go from here...

  • Trouble connecting OSX to a shared printer on Vista

I am running OSX 10.4 and can't seem to get it to print to Vista. This is the weird thing. Firstly, I can access shared folders on Vista from OSX, I can print to the printer hooked up to Vista from Vista on Parallels, I can print to the printer connected to my PC from XP through boot camp but I just can't print from OSX direct. So to make that clear I can run Vista on my Macbook Pro with Parallels and print to the network shared printer no trouble at all but not from say Pages or Keynote.
Has anyone got this problem or any suggestions? I have tried customer support and they suggested a few things I had already done like Bonjour, Option button - Windows printing through Samba, Network Neighbourhoood and a few others but with no success. Please help. I am thinking it may be a compatibility issue with Vista, OSX and Printing Service but being this new to Mac I can't be sure of that by a long shot. Thanks for your time guys.

  • Pages 2.0.2 won't print to shared printer

help! i'm at the end of my rope here.
pages used to print to my shared printer no problem. but since a hard drive failure in my powerbook g4 1.33 it's been no dice.
since getting the hd, everything has been reinstalled: 10.4.8, epson printer drivers, iworks; EVERYTHING. other apps print to the shared printer fine. (the shared printer is on a home network, connected to a mac pro. access via a wireless router (dlink))
i tried resetting the powerbook's PMU/PRAM. still, a popup window says: "error while printing."
when the PB is directly connected to the printer 'pages' prints fine, only to the shared printer. nothing on the network has changed at all. (except one of my attempts to fix this was to reset the printer system on the mac pro)
i've tried all the suggestions in the forum (searching for 'pages print error'), this includes turning off duplicate fonts with fontbook, resetting the printer system on the PB in various ways as suggested, deleting pref files and the like.
    steps to print involve these:
    1. open pages.
    2. open file
    3. select print, select shared printer.
    4. click print.
    5. a slight pause for about 1sec then the error message comes up: Error when printing.
any subsequent try at printing the same file or another file the message pops up immediately with no delay.
what am i missing? is there something on the network side?
i can't think of anything else to check. i've looked at apple support articles till the wee hours of the morning.
can someone offer any suggestions? you would have my undying gratitude!!
    cheers and happy holidays,
    sean

    hey folks,
i've used app zapper to delete pages and then re-installed it. same thing happens. no luck.
are there any other setting that pages might access? does PMSessionValidatePrintSettings refer to Print Manager?
could it be permissions on the print manager's plist file? i'm just guessing as there was a slight name change on her user name when her settings, etc. were imported thru the migration assistant after the hd failure. it's a guess as i've run into this problem when switching from my PPC to the Intel. my user name went from seanw to sean and some of my apps were still labeled with the old "seanw" as the owner. (this was because i dragged and dropped some stuff instead of using the MA as i didn't know it existed.)
if no solution presents itself how would i go about transferring my wife's user profile to another, new profile with out too much headache?
would i create the new user and use MA to transfer her stuff from her backup?
thanks for the suggestions, you have no idea how much this is appreciated.
    cheers,

  • Printing to a Windows XP shared printer

I have long printed from my Macbook with Snow Leopard to my Windows XP computer with a shared printer. I began encountering intermittent connection issues, so I reset my printers. Now when I go to add a printer, under Windows, I see my Windows XP computer, but I get the "unable to connect to server" message. I have been able to add my IP printer, but I cannot add any USB shared printers on my Windows network. I can still connect to my Windows XP computer as a server.
I have scoured the forums and tried many different fixes, repaired permissions, etc. Now I'm at wit's end. Any suggestions?

Kappy, thanks for the input. Your suggestions didn't solve my problem, but through your links I was able to find another fix at macwindows.com relating to modifying the WINS settings and it worked. See below. Thanks!
+Daniel Hoit also sent configuration info for accessing Windows shares, and disagreed with a previous reader about Leopard's file sharing:+
+Samba based services are updated to reflect revisions to the open source Samba project in Leopard, and are not a step backwards. The addition of packet signing alone is a huge and welcome addition.+
+As for the poster's complaints regarding WINS workgroup and Finder browsing, the options are still there in Leopard. You can configure the WINS information in System Preferences/Network/ Advanced/WINS section. Choose a workgroup, and choose a wins server if you have one on your network.+

  • Printing to a Windows shared printer, keep getting "Hold for Authentication" when I'm on the Windows shared network and can browse the computers.

I have had two MacBook Pros now, and this has been an issue in Mountain Lion and Mavericks. I've got a shared printer on the local Windows network (it's a USB printer shared via the network and the computer), and the other Windows computers in the house can print to it no problem. The Mac sees it no problem, yet whenever I try to print to it, I just get "Hold for Authentication."
Like I said, persists over Mountain Lion and Mavericks. No other computer in the house has any issues printing to it. I've installed the drivers for the printer as well (Brother HL-2240).
I've tried to follow the instructions here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23268762#23268762 but the printer isn't listed in Keychain Access.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

Well, that isn't too useful. Try this instead: Adding a printer shared by a Windows computer via SMB/CIFS.
You may find more by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching for articles by keyword.

  • How to print from a macbook to a shared printer hook up to pc

    Hi,
How I could be able to print wireless from my macbook to a shared printer hook up to a pc. The printer is a DELL 1320C and the pc is a DELL Inspiron. Please help me out with this issue. I do all my stuffs in my mac and when I to print my job, I get a nightmare.

As long as you have a wireless router connected to your Dell and the printer is set as a shared printer...Just go and print a document and it will ask you what printer you want to use. Use finder to locate the printer from your Dell as it should show up under "shared". I think thats all i had to do when i had a Sony Vio and wanted to print from my MacBook. (You may need to log in as a guest to gain access to the printer.) Its been a while having since upgraded to a new iMac.

  • Problem with shared printer after upgrade to Maverick

    Hi Guys,
I have one iMac and two windows PC which connect to the same WiFi router.
The iMac has a HP LaserJet CP2025 attached to its USB port and shared with other windows PCs with no problem.
Until I upgrade my iMac to Maverick recently, now those PCs cannot see the shared printer anymore.
Do you have any ideas what configuration is changed in the Maverick which could cause this please?
I have been searching through Apple communities and other tech forums and have tried many solution, but still cannot solve this. (I have also tried setting up LDP, but no luck so far)
PS ... Shared files seems to work fine. I can access (read/write) the shared files/folders from windows with no problem (SMB and AFP enable).
Any ideas, pointers or links would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    ChaaPru
