Accessing Airport Disk from Windows XP

I have a new Airport Extreme with an attached USB disk. I am able to access the disk from my MAC, but when trying to access it from my windows computer I get Unknown user, incorrect password or login is disabled (error 1203). I have tried configuring the disk access with base station password, disk password and user accounts. Have also tried guest login.
I have 2 XP machines. On one I see the airport disk, on the other I don't. On neither can I access the files. The one that totally does not work has no firewall installed. T
The application I am using is Airport base station agent on the PC. The airport utility on both PC works fine. Running 7.2.1 firmware on the base station
Help apprecited.

An update (and maybe some help to someone with a similar problem). I still can't get the airport base station agent to work, but I have succeeded in mounting the disk manually. Had some problem with the syntax, but it is \\172.16.1.1\diskname where 172.16.1.1 is the address of the airport base station and the discname is what it says it is. Don't try to add the name of the base unit into the path. I set it up with disc password (don't know if his makes a difference). And obviously if you have the airport in bridged mode, this will not help, since the unit will not have an IP address

  • Accessing Airport network from Windows PC

My son is visiting and we cannot get his PC to find and sign on to airport network. Anything special required to do that?

He's tried the password multiple times and cannot get on the network. We have four other laptop PC's in the house this weekend and all others are accessing with no problem. I assume there is something in his settings that is wrong, but I have no PC knowledge as I am a forever Apple user.
The network appears in the list of available networks along with others in the neighborhood, but when he enters the password, it just continually churns away with a green bar scrolling across the screen saying "waiting to connect" (or some similar message).
    Thanks.

  • Accessing Time Capsule disk from Windows 7

I have a Time Capsule 2TB which serves several Macs and a PC running Windows 7. I was able to access the disk from Windows 7 to share files. My PC suddenly stopped seeing the disk - although the Windows 7 machine can still access the web through the Time Capsule.
When I run the AirPort Utility through Windows 7 it is unable to find any Airport wireless devices. I can however see the Time Capsule and the disk when I 'Configure other...' and enter the IP address manually, but still cannot access it.
I am using Airport Utility version 6.2
I thought it might be an issue with the Time Capsule and bought a new one but encountered exactly the same problem.
I read that turning 'Search' off in Windows 7 might solve the problem. I tried doing that but still cannot find any AirPort wireless devices.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You should be using the airport utility from windows .. not 6.2 which is only a Mac version AFAIK.
Did your windows suddenly decide spontaneously that it is now in work or public network.. instead of home.. windows does this at random intervals to make life exciting for all users. Drag it home.. and make it sit there.
No go, then shut down all the firewalls.
If your problem coincided with the recent upgrade to 7.6.3 firmware.. which would not surprise me, downgrade to 7.6.1 or earier.

  • How to access Time Capsule 2013 disk from Windows 7

I have seen several (older) threads that suggest that you can access the Time Capsule disk from Windows 7 using Windows Explorer and navigating to \\Time-Capsule-Name.  However, I have tried this repeatedly and just cannot get it to work.
Could this be a bug or unsupported in the latest 2013 Time Capsule?
In Airport Utility, under Disks > File Sharing, I have Enable File Sharing checked.  The workgroup is WORKGROUP.
The IP address is 192.168.1.4.  I am able to ping it successfully; I just cannot access it through Windows Explorer.
Am I missing something?  Please help!

Are you running homegroup on the PC..??
That should definitely be turned off!!
    Homegroup can mess things up.
I would try with ipv6 off but that might make no difference at all.. leave it set to local-link if it doesn't do anything.
There was issues when the Gen4 came out with security. Windows uses too high an encryption level..
    See info here.
    http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/changing-file-encryption-settings-on-a-win dows-7-h.pageCd-storyboard,pageNum-5.html
Change to 40 or 56 bit encyrption.
Unfortunately some of the controls you think you are setting on the TC are not really being set at all.. eg I doubt you are actually changing the workgroup.. if possible though you should have disk access set to lowest level .. device password and you should also turn on guest account to read and write.. that usually solved access for me in earlier TC .. I haven't bought an AC for the moment.. because.. well I believe I have done my time on the war front. I bled out already on the bleeding edge.. time for you to do it and I can reap the benefits on the second hardware revision and about the 10th firmware update.
Other things I would try if the above don't work.
Factory reset and start over.. you moved the IP of the TC and that is unwise.
Do not worry about the various settings.. do the factory reset.. in full isolation from the internet. ie TC plugged into the windows computer. Nothing else in either..
Now try at the default IP of the TC..
    \\10.0.1.1
Beyond that you need another computer to try or some device. iOS would be fine... in normal situation you would test other protocols, eg ftp but TC offers only SMB and AFP.. there are no AFP clients for windows that I have heard of.. you might have success if you boot the PC from a linux live cd.. it should be able to read AFP even if it cannot write to it. But the SMB is more important. If linux can access with SMB protocol and windows cannot.. the issue is windws OS.
Or iOS devices have some AFP file browsers available but again just test with SMB.. most file browsers for iOS use SMB.. if other devices can manage SMB protocol to open files on the TC then the finger points very clearly to the PC as the trouble.. on the other hand if nothing can access SMB then the TC is faulty and should be replaced.

  • Accessing Time Capsule disk from Windows -- What's the status?

    Hi,
I've seen much confusion about this problem, and nothing official from Apple...
What I know is that my TC with firmware 7.3.2 had no problems.
Both 7.4.1 and 7.4.2 instead do not allow windows pcs to mount the drive.
    1) is there any known workaround?
    2) does it depend on the TC settings?
thanks in advance for the clarification

You should be using the airport utility from windows .. not 6.2 which is only a Mac version AFAIK.

  • Can't copy large files to AirPort Disk Using Windows 7

    Hi Everyone,
I'm positng because I'm unable to copy large files to an AirPort Disk using Windows 7.  I have the following setup.
    AirPort Extreme:
    - Firmware version: 7.6.1
    - Airport disks secured by password
    - No guest access allowed
    - Airport Disk Preferences:
      - Automatically discover airport disks is enabled
      - Show Airport Disks in the system tray is enabled
    External Drive:
    - Western Digital 500 GB MyBook External Drive connected to Airport Extreme thru USB
    - FAT32 Formated
    Computers:
    - 2 Toshiba Proteges, Both with 4GB RAM
    - Both have Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1, 64-bit version
    - (Sorry we have no MacBooks at home, just iPhones and iPods!)
    Airport Utility:
    - Version  5.6.1
    Airport Disk Preferences Utility:
    - Version  1.5.5.3
A week ago, I was able to copy over large files (videos <4GB in size) to the drive.  Now, when I try to copy over these large files to the drive, the copy dialog box hangs.  I receive a message stating that Windows is calculating the size, but then it doesn't copy over.  Windows then gives me a message that it is unable to copy to the drive.  When I test the drive connection by copying a small text file over, it copies over quickly and seamlessly.  This problem occurs on both computers.
I am able to do the following with the drive connection:
    - Read files
    - Change file names
    - Copy files from the drive to my computer
    - See the contents of drive
I've tried all the combinations of the following with no success:
    - Turning off Windows Search
    - Downgrading the firmware
    - Reconfiguring wireless adapter
    - Rebooting computer
    - Rebooting wireless router
    - Rebooting external drive
The drive seems to be working fine except for when I want to copy <2GB files over to the drive.  Does anyone have a solution that seems to work?
    Thanks!

I'm happy to report that, after reformatting the drive to HFS+ (aka Mac OS Extended), there are no problems writing/copying large or small files to the AirDisk drive.  I'm also happy to report that I am copying to the drive at a rate of roughly 4MB/s.
As I mentioned earlier, the only catch is that I am unable to plug the external drive directly into a Windows computer via the USB port as Windows is unable to read HFS+ formatted drives.  (I can, however, plug the drive into a Mac computer as they can read HFS+ formatted drives.  The only problem is that I don't own any Macs at this time!  LOL!)
You're probably wondering how I formatted the external drive to HFS+ since I don't own any Macs.  (Windows only allows you to format drives in exFAT, FAT, NTFS and the like.)  That is a good question.  Basically, I downloaded an open source formatting tool called, Gparted, which allows you to format any USB drive to any major file format system.  Since Gparted is an open source tool, it is a little cumbersome to use. Once you figure out how to use it, it is a cinch to format the drive to HFS+.  (Of course, an easier method would be to borrow a friend's mac, plug the drive into their mac, and format it to HFS+ using their mac.)
For a step-by-step guide on how to solve this problem, see the steps below:
    1) Backup all data from external drive
        a) Fortunately, I have a 1TB ultraportable USB drive which has enough space to backup all data on the drive
    2) Format the external drive to HFS+ using one of the methods below
        a) Plug it into a Mac and format it
         b) Use Gparted (free) to format it
    3) Plug the drive back into the Airport Extreme
    4) Start copying files over to your networked drive!
I hope this helps you! Cheers!

  • Remote Access to TC Disk from Windows/PC. Do I need DynDNS. Using FTP

I need to be able to have anyone on the Internet be able to access my files on Time Capsule. I am using my Time Capsule as a router and do not have a static IP. My Internet Provider is comcast and modem is a Motorola Surfboard.
    Here are my basic questions:
How can my Time Capsule be accessed remotely via PC/Windows? What protocol? How?
Can Time Capsule be set up do FTP? What port mapping do I set up for the personal and private UDP and TCP?
Since I do not have a static IP address, do I need to subscribe to a Custom DynDNS account?
    Thank You

How can my Time Capsule be accessed remotely via PC/Windows? What protocol? How?
Windows or Linux PCs can access the Time Capsule's (TC) file service via the SMB protocol.
The following is the basic steps to configure the TC's hard drive to be accessed from the Internet.
    Configuring the TC
AirPort Utility > Select the TC
o Note the value of the IP Address. This is the Public or WAN-side IP address of the TC. (Note: You will need to have either a static Public IP address, or use a free dynamic DNS service, like you suggested, in order to access the TC from the Internet.)
Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection
o Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
Manual Setup > Disks > Files Sharing tab
    o Enable file sharing (checked)
o Secure Shared Disks = With base station password
o AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed
o Share disks over Ethernet WAN port (checked)
Manual Setup > AirPort > Base Station
o Enter a Base Station Password and verify it in the Verify Password box.
Manual Setup > Advanced > Port Mapping
o Click the plus sign "+" to add a new port mapping.
o In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 5688) that you choose.
o In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your TC that you noted earlier.
o In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, type 548, and then, click Continue.
o In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "Time Capsule File Sharing," and then, click Done.
o When you have made all the changes, click Update.
Connect the PC to the TC from a remote location
o Type in your DynDNS domain name, plus a colon and the port number you specified when configuring the TC earlier. For example,"www.myTC.com:5688"
o You will be prompted for your user name and password. The user name can be anything you like; the password would be the TC's Base Station password you defined earlier.

  • Unable to access AirPort Disk

I have a 250GB WD Mybook hooked up via USB to my AEBS (Running 7.2.1).
I see the name of my base station in the Finder under SHARED but if I double click on it I simply see "Connecting..." at the top of the window and it goes nowhere. If I click on Connect As... I also get nothing. I have tried unplugging the drive and plugging it back in as well as restarting the base station. I can see the disk under Disks in the Airport utility so I'm not sure whats going on.
I bought this AEBS yesterday after being told in the store I should just be able to hook the disk up and go. This is INCREDIBLY frustrating

OK, I seem to finally have mine working- I basically put all of Garret's tips together at once:
    1. Unplugged HD from AEBS, plugged HD directly into MacBook Pro.
    2. Disk mounted and I copied some files to it.
    3. Unplugged HD from MBP (I couldn't actually eject it, but that seems to be a separate Leopard issue not related to this, so I didn't worry about it.)
    4. Double-checked Airport Utility settings- it was set to allow Guest access, and use base station password for connecting as a user.
    5. Plugged HD back into AEBS.
    6. Relaunched (Force Quit) Finder.
    7. Voila! Finder now connects as Guest, and I also can connect as a user with the password. Either way, I can open files, etc. like normal.
It seems to still be working so far (knock on wood). I didn't try accessing the HD from my PC yet.
Thank you Garret for your help!

  • Manage Airport Express from Windows computer

Is it possible to manage the Airport Express from a Windows computer?
Most of the posts here deal with connection problems from windows to the device - my problem is that I no longer have a macintosh and so I no longer have access to the airport admin utilty.
Does Apple provide a set of admin tools that run on Windows?

It does not work for the airport express. At least I have been unable to get it to work. "An error occurred while trying to access the base station" Is the error I get. iTunes has no problem playing it.
I used to be able to access my Airport Expresses with the software that came with it. But unfortunately I lost my disk and can 't find the right software to download anywhere. It's all for the airport and not the airport express.
Very disappointed with Apple's support for such an expensive device.

  • Unable to see Airport Express from Windows Airport Utility

I am setting up an Airport Express to connect remote speakers for a friend with windows base system. The router is a TrendNet.
I have managed to add the Airport Express to the network. I can ping the router, and if I put in the IP address to Airport Utility it is found and I can configure it. Airport Utility on it's own however will not find the Airport Express.
I can currently play to the Airport speakers from multiple iPhones also on the network, so I know that part is working as well. What is not working is the Airport Express is not showing up in iTunes as an available speaker. I am guessing that as the Airport Utility also will not recognize it that is had something to do with firewall rules on the Windows 7 computer or Trendnet Router.  I checked Windows 7, and there are four Bonjour entries and one iTunes entry. All seem set open for incoming requests.
At this point I'm puzzled. Any network gurus out there have new ideas?
    Thanks
    Gary

I just ran both the verify and repair options on both the permissions and the volume. The ~/Library permissions are repaired, but that was all. I also checked the software update, but I have all the latest installed, it seems.
Where can I check my AirTunes version? I tried spotlighting for it, but that search came up empty. I did install the version that came with the AirPort Express. It says "AirPort 4.2", so I guess that's the version installed at the moment. My iTunes version is 7.0.2. I upgraded the firmware to version 6.3.
I have very little knowledge of networking, I'm afraid, and I'm starting to think that maybe the problem could be my router being set up in such a way that it won't allow the AirPort Express to connect properly.
The reason I believe it's my network rather than the AirPort Express is because when I reset the device, I see that new network named "Apple Network xxxxx". When I connect to it, iTunes properly displays that AirTunes selection box in the lower right and I can stream music to it. With the ethernet cable plugged in, the sound does lag every now and then whenever I use an applications that needs Internet access.
The MacBook, router and AirPort Express are about one to two meters apart (that's three to six feet, I think). I'm not quite sure if the SpeedTouch router is set up properly. Luckily, a friend of mine who's a system administrator is coming over today, so I'll ask him if he could have a look at my network setup.
Thanks for all the help and the fast replies! :^)
    my thumb is all sore
    Bathe it in salt water
    I'll try that, haha. :^)
    Your English is excellent .

  • Access USB Disk from Win XP connected to Router

    Hello,
My Airport express is plugged into cable modem router and so is a desktop running Win XP.
Another 2 machines Macbook and Winxp laptop can access AE router, internet and the USB disk connected to AE.
I am having trouble accessing the USB disk from desktop which does not have wifi and is hooked directly to cable modem router. I tried assigning a static IP to Airport Express and that didnt help either.
    Any ideas?
    hhol

    Welcome to the discussions!
You posted in the AirPort Extreme forum, but your post indicates that you have an AirPort Express.
If you have an AirPort Express, this device does not support hard drives at the USB port. Only compatible printers are supported.

  • Access Airport Utility from Status Bar?

Hello - is there any clever way to enable access of "Airport Utility" from the WIFI Icon in my status bar (top right toolbar)?
The WIFI icon has option "open network preferences" but nothing to open Airport Utility.
If I hold the option and click the WIFI Icon, I get WIFI diagnostics, but no Airport Utility.
i would really like to remove Airport Utitlity from my dock but access with 1 click.
    thankyou

    Hi there LaPastenague
I have the Monitor Airport setting already as you kindly shown me. Plus the other 2 checkboxes checked. Thankyou.
LaPastenague - you likely help heaps of people - but its me again, I am opening and closing Airport Utilty alot to check connectivity as I am still experiencing the slow web page loads. I did the Iv6 link-only as you last helped me. I am the person in bridge-mode on the Time Capcule.
I have also noticed I am seeing "noresult " in my Finder/Path Finder window when I search on my HD or 2TB Time Capscule I use as an external drive.  Then the results appear. So something is not right.
What i have been doing more regularly to help with my "slow page load problem", is turning off the ISP's wireless router and then wait 10min and back on. This brings town TC as its bridged.
What I have noticed, when I open up Airport Utility first, it says Internet is "disconnected". But in my WIFI Icon it shows all good. Then after a while it shows Internet connected.
    when I open initially
    then after a while:
What I have read, is perhaps I should remove the 4 DNS settings and back to one. The ISP gave me the 4 DSN settings and asked me to put them in, in attempt to improve slow page load speed.

  • Accessing ext3 partitions from Windows with FS Driver

    Hi everyone,
I have a slight probem. I'm dual-booting ArchLinux and Windows. Here is my partition scheme:
    /dev/sda1 (NTFS) Lenovo Recovery partition
    /dev/sda2 (NTFS) Windows
    /dev/sda3 (ext2) /boot
    /dev/sda5 (JFS) /
    /dev/sda6 (JFS) /home
    /dev/sda7 (ext3) [documents] partition mounted on /media/data
    /dev/sda8 (swap) swap
Everything works fine on the Linux side (of course).
The problem is that I use http://www.fs-driver.org/ to access my documents (/dev/sda7) from Windows.
This worked fine (I was using Kubuntu) but now I had to format the disk in order to install ArchLinux and FS Driver would not recognize the "documents" partition.
I think it might be because the partition is not PRIMARY but LOGICAL. Is there a way to fix this without reformatting everything (just formatting /dev/sda7 is fine with me) ?
    Thank you in advance

Hi, I just stumbled across this one and thought I'd throw in my two cents....
Something I've found about windows is that it's -very- picky about partition sizes.
For  instance, on a new system of mine, I did dual booting windows/Linux from partitions on the same hard drive.
The windows partition was first.  After creating my Linux partitions, windows would no longer boot, said the partition table was corrupt.
    (All partitions were primary)
The solution?  I created my Linux partitions using windows tools (which wasted around 10Gigs of hard drive space) and finished them off with linux tools.
    Everything worked fine then.
Bottom line, Linux can use partition sizes that (some?) windows will refuse to use.
You should be able to simply remove the last 2 partitions (sda7 and sda8).  Any partitioner should work (gparted, cfdisk, windows logical disk manager).  Don't forget to move your documents.  If you do this from your installed Linux system, don't forget to disable your swap space or you won't be able to remove that partition.
...might also need to unmount /dev/sda7 to use cfdisk... I think gparted does this automatically but don't quote me on that one...
Then you can recreate the last two partitions using windows.  Then use Linux to set their types, format them, and restore your documents.
Just to simplify things with the swap space, it's probably easier to use a live distro than your installed Linux.
If your fstab uses UUID's, don't forget to update as formatting will assign new UUID's to the partitions.
... should solve at least half the problem.
    laters,
    b
