Accessing an external HD as a shared library

Here's my situation: I have a personal collection of music (about 30 GB) on my MBP hard disk, which I manage with iTunes. As a part-time job, I am also a DJ. I recently ripped all of my 3500+ CDs onto an external dive, which takes up almost 200GB. What I would like to do is to access this as a shared itunes library - as if it were on another computer. I know how to use the external drive as my only itunes folder, but that's not what I'm asking. By using it as a shared library, I can have the music that I use with me at all times without connecting the large external, and only bring that along when I have a gig.
This will all be done under the latest version of Leopard, on the December 2008 model MBP. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this for me!

So are you saying that iTunes need to be running on a computer in order to share its library?
Yes.
If yes, then I obviously can't do what I want.
I can't tell really what you wan tat this opint.
As Meg pointed out in her first post, you can create 2 ibraries. One library on the external for DJing and one on the internal for you own use.
Does iTunes crawl all shared network directories for "iTunes Library.xml" files? I'm just trying to figure out how it searches for shared libraries!
No.
iTunes is running and you set it up in iTunes prefs -> Sharing to Share the library (or playlists).
iTunes on that computer will then broadcast that info on th elocal network.
If iTunes on another computer on that network is set up to look for Shared libraries, it will get that info and you can play songs from that Shared library.
Creating a new library is completely different.
Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select *Create library* and select somewhere to put this new library.
It will be a complete, new iTunes folder. Any songs you add are added only to this library.
To use a different library (not a "shared" library), hold Hold Option and launch iTunes. Select *Choose library* and select the iTunes library file in the iTunes folder of the library you want.
This is what some people do when they want to keep a library for lossless and a library of AAC/MP3 for loading onto their iPod.

  • Sharing Library Stored on External Drive

    I have an iTunes library stored on a firewire 800 drive attached to a new Mac Mini. The Mac Mini sees and plays all songs.
    I can select the Mini as a shared library on another Mac and all of the metadata appears, but none of the songs play when clicked. After I've clicked on one song that doesn't play and then select another, I get an exclamation point next to the first track, but no exclamation points next to any tracks until I've tried to play them.
    I've deleted all songs from my library and added them back, I've consolidated several times and I've tried holding option down while starting iTunes to select the library file located on the external disk. None of this has helped at all.
    Both machines are running 10.5.6 and iTunes 8.1.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.
    Brad

    I'm having a similar problem.
    I've set up two different user accounts on my iMac to separate my iTunes libraries, one ripped in AAC that I use for my iPod (stored on a partition on my internal HD) and one ripped in ALAC (stored on an external HD) that I use to wirelessly stream music to my main music system. Both are set up to share the library.
    When I access them from my MacBook, both show some exclamation marks, but the are almost exclusively not the same songs. Go figure.
    I have a SqueezeBox linked to my Lossless library, and it plays everything fine.
    I've also installed Simplify Media (http://www.simplifymedia.com/) which restores the sharing iTunes over the internet feature that Apple dropped from iTunes a few versions ago. This too plays all the songs in my Lossless library just fine.
    This seems to be iTunes sharing specific, and I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one to have this problem.

  • ITunes can't access shared library when Vista parental controls are on

    I started a thread back on March 1 2008, but it got archived before it could be answered, see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1420673&tstart=0
    I'm using 64 bit Vista with iTunes version of 8.0.2.20, but I don't believe this issue has anything to do with the 64 bit versus 32 bit iTunes versions.
    The exact message is:
    "The shared library "libraryname" is not responding. (-39)
    Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
    But if I turn off Parental Controls, the shared library is accessible, it all works fine. This has nothing to do with the iTunes store (and potential web site blocking), I just want to allow shared library access while leaving parental controls on.
    Any ideas?

    This question has been around for almost two years now with no answer...very frustrating and disappointing that no one from Apple can step in and assist. I have set up the port number on my firewalls, both Windows and McAfee, as per the iTunes message and it still does not work...so I am now at a loss.
    Turn off parental conrols and it all works perfectly...turn it on and library is visible but not accessible...PLEASE can someone help with this!!!
    Thanks.

  • Can't access shared library to import.  Why?

    When trying to access sharing, library will not come up in iTunes so that it can be imported.  Can anyone tell me why?

    Rebel,
    iTunes has two kinds of sharing:  regular sharing, which allows listening but not copying, and Home Sharing, which does allow copying.
    Make sure you are using Home Sharing, and that both computers are authorized to the relevant account.

  • Can we give UNIQUE ACCESS FOR THE SPECIFIC FILE IN THE LIBRARY in SP2013? How can we remove users from SHARED WITH link where files are shared with users?

    Hi,
    Any help on this?
    Thanks
    srabon

    Hi srabon,
    For giving unique access for a specific file in a library, you can go to the library, and select the file , and click FILES->Shared With->ADVANCED, under PERMISSION ribbon, click ‘Stop Inheriting Permissions’, then the file will have unique permissions.
    For removing the shared users for a file, firstly, like the above steps, select the file , and click FILES->Shared With->ADVANCED , make sure the file has unique access, then select the users that you want to remove, and click Remove User Persmissions
    under PERMISSIONS ribbon.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can see but not access shared library

    I have a PC running Windows XPsp3 and the latest version of iTunes, and my husband is on a macbook using the latest OS and iTunes.  We both have Home Sharing enabled and he can access my library, but I can not access his.  I can see his shared library but when I click on it, it thinks for a while and kicks me back to my library.  I checked to make sure we were both using the same account info and that we both had sharing enabled.  I checked to make sure our respective firewalls where allowing iTunes through. We are using an AirPort for our router; I'm wired in and he is wireless. I've been looking in the community and can't see where anyone has successfully resolved this problem.
    BTW, before I recently reformatted and rebuilt my PC, when I encountered this problem I would get an error stating I needed to check my firewall.  Reformatting my PC did not correct the problem, only removed the error message.
    Anyone have any other ideas?

    It appears to be having no problem finding the library.
    What is at issue appears to be that the library is invalid.

  • Accessing jsp deployed as a shared Library

    Hi All,
    I have an ear file which is deployed as a shared Library in my Portal Web Project. Now I am trying to access a login.jsp which is in the Ear file. I created a pageflow portlet, with the pageflow pointing the login.jsp, it doesnt work ( irony is that there is no exception/message being displayed on the server).
    Now when I use a browser portlet with the contentURI pointing to that Login.jsp, then everything works fine. Also if I create a normal jsp, and redirect it to the Login.jsp it still works fine; but if I directly forward the request to Login.jsp, I get an IllegalStateException.
    Can any one explain the reasons for these??
    Any input on this would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    G

    OK, it probably really is a packaging problem then. Maybe your JSP pages being used by the pageflow are not in a directory structure that matches the package structure of the pageflow controller? I tried to find a reference for this requirement in the apache netui beehive docs, but couldn't find it at first glance:
    http://beehive.apache.org/
    I did find a mention in the Oracle WebLogic Portal docs, "The package and WebContent folders for a given page flow must always match." at:
    http://edocs.bea.com/wlw/docs103/guide/webapplications/netui/tutorial/tutWebAppStep2.html#1
    So... if you have a com.my.company.foo.MyController.java in your src tree then in your web root dir you would have com/my/company/foo/login.jsp, etc.

  • Music Players that can access shared library

    I'm extremely unhappy with the iOS 6 music player. Its horribly buggy, terrible UI, and has just generally been a pain to use.
    However it has one feature I can't live without: the ability to use my iTunes shared libraries.
    Is there a decent music player out there which could access my shared library, or maybe access it using some form of remote filesystem like NFS, SMB, etc?
    I could even put my music on my NAS box if I had a nice player that could access it over the net on the iPad.
    Support for Airplay definitely a big feature (probably requirement) to either Airplay speakers or Apple Express.

    Hey Laynesterv,
    I'd give the following article a look - even though it says Troubleshooting, it covers a lot of useful information such as System Requirements and Setup:
    Troubleshooting Home Sharing
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
    According to the article, all the devices you want to use with Home Sharing need to be connected to your home network, so your daughter wouldn't be able to connect from college.
    Hope that helps,

  • TS2972 I can see the song titles in itunes shared library on my new imac  but songs will not play. I have a pc with wifi network that the main music library is on. tried saving songs from pc to an external drive then to new mac but thats not working eithe

    attempted to transfer itunes music from pc to new imac. didn't work. apple suggest using sharing method. main library of music is on pc. did those steps and shared library shows up on mac but when you click on the song to play it doesn't play or maybe ther is no content? any suggestions?

    Hi there,
    It sounds like your purchased content is not transfering via a flash drive. It may be easier to re-download this contnet directly from iTunes. Take a look at the article below for mor information.

  • How to load external SWF used sharing library.

    Hi~~~
    Before ask the question, plz understand my bad English..
    Recently I try to load the Swf file that is maded by Flash CS 6.0.
    Especially it used shared library..
    When I try to load this SWF, I used FileStream instead URLRequest.
    This is because the target SWF File located same device with the Swf Application.. So when I use the URLRequest
    it give me the warning - Sandbox security violation.
    But by using FileStream, the warning did not occur.
    This is the sample code below..
      var myFile = new File(path);
      var myStream = new FileStream();
      myStream.open(myFile, FileMode.READ;
      var myBytes:ByteArray = new ByteArray();
      myStream.readBytes( myBytes );
       mSwfLoader.loadBytes( fileStream, context );
       mSwfLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onLoadedComplete);
    As you can see, I made a event listener to get the content of the Loader, after receving Complete Event(I guess.. after decording?).
    But I can't receive any event call, so I removed symbol used sharing library in the SWF.
    And this gave me the result as I respected... So I guess the problem caused by using sharing Library..!
    (In parenthease, I can see the valid result in running debug time on the Flash CS6..)
    What should I do? I respect that using sharing libary give saving memory.  So I want to using it as possible.
    Thanks for your reading...!

    iTunes on your iPhone is for purchasing items.
    Use the Music (and Videos) app on the iPhone to see the Shared library from iTunes on your Mac.
