Accessing Desktop via File Sharing Question

I have two Mac's hooked up via my router one using an Airport card, the other wired. One has OS 9.1 the other has 9.2.1 installed. I cant access eithers desktop via file share, I set both up so that you can access them with no luck. I have to open up Netscape and type in a url for them to put up. Isn't there another way to access ones desktop via file sharing but where your able to see the computers on the network??

  • My ipad2 stopped accessing my movies via file sharing. My iPad3 still works. Has my iPad2 become obsolete?

I used to be able to access my movies at home via file sharing on my computer's iTunes. My ipad3 still works beautifully so I'm guessing something is up with my ipad2 that no longer works. This would be very annoying considering I use my ipad2 as my work iPad and I cannot swap with the kids ipad3 because it doesn't have 3G and therefore can't be use outside of wifi.

Sorry... Might be confusing. My iMac has file sharing turned on so that I can access my movies through the iPad. I select the videos icon on my ipad and my library shows up. When I press my library it looks like its accessing but stops halway. My ipad3 however has no problems and accessing immediately allowing me to see and all my movies on the iPad. This stopped working on the ipad2 only a few weeks back. I have restarted the ioad2 twice but it won't correct itself.

  • Simple file sharing question. Bug?

How do I simply add or edit a file using File Sharing or FTP to the Sites directory to serve a web page?
In Snow Leopard I was able to edit a page from another Mac and save the file. In Lion any pages edited via File Sharing/FTP cannot be displayed any more.
If I edit the page locally the page saves and can be displayed.
If I edit the page via File Sharing/FTP (logging on as the same user) a permissions error is displayed in the browser.

  • Personal File Sharing question

    Hi,
I have a question about personal file sharing between my iMac Intel (my work computer) and an eMac (student work computer). I work at a college, and our regular back-up system on campus is just not worthwhile, so as a secondary back-up, I created a new account on the eMac (the student computer). I have already successfully accessed the regular student account via personal file sharing (it shows up on the network under the office name given to the computer), but is there a way that I can also connect directly into my new account on the eMac? Is there something that I need to do to make the separate accounts visible?
    Thanks,
    Ken

I'll try to access this from a Windows PC from the internet first (then try with ubuntu)
That requires much more work, like finding Outside IP, Port Forwarding, etc., try it locally first.
    1) System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Windows Sharing.
    2) Browser won't get you to File Sharing, that would be for System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Personal Web Sharing.
    3) By default the Shared folder is shared, but you can log in as the Mac's User & see all that the Mac User can, or Sharepoints for smb...
    http://lowendmac.com/mac2win/04/0623.html
    Get Sharepoints...
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
And setup what you wish to share with whom.

  • Remote file sharing questions

I'm trying to login to my G5, to share files, from a Macbook connected to the Internet via wireless (Airport Extreme card). It's not working, and I have a few questions. Help would be appreciated.
    - I have a .mac account, and BTMM activated on both computers. Is this necessary for remote file sharing? IOW, what's the difference between using BTMM and using "File Sharing" in the Sharing panel?
    - I'm trying to login using "connect to server" and the afp address of my G5. The address that shows in the G5 sharing panel is a variation of my router/modem's address. But there must be many other users with the same address--how does this work (the afp doesn't seem to be a unique IP address)?
    - I've searched and haven't found a good site that describes in detail the differences between "file sharing" "remote login" "remote management" etc, and how to use them. Any suggesions?
If this helps at all, here's something I did in Terminal:
    dns-sd -X udp 123 456 789
Timestamp if External Address Protocol Internal Port External Port TTL
    19:01:49.410 0 0.0.0.0 16 123 0 0
Also, if anyone has suggestions on making my remote connection happen, I'd love to hear it. I'm trying to access files from my G5, and I'm away--this isn't a LAN.
    thanks.

A couple more details: right now I'm near a Mac network, and I do see two Macs under the "shared" tab in my finder window. And when I was at home I could see my G5 there, and was able to log into it from my Macbook. Also, my G5 is set to never sleep.

  • Can application A access the "itunes file sharing" files of application B

    Hi,
Suppose that application B has files in itunes file sharing (i.e. files which can be saved onto the pc desktop via itunes). Can application A access these files?
I know that there is some sandboxing, but dont know to what extent.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I mean the files which can also be viewed in the  "file sharing" section of itunes e.g. :
    http://slidetorock.com/help/itunes-file-sharing.png
Clearly these files are stored in a different way to other files associated with the application. e.g. If I connect my iphone to a linux machine I can easily view these files for the different applications (but not other files of the app).
I presume apps can also access other apps files which are viewable in "file sharing"?
    Thanks

  • File Sharing questions

On a Macbook, I like to have file sharing available when home but I do not want to allow access when I am on a public wifi network. Is there a way to set this up without having to enable and disable the File Sharing service?
    thanks
    Ken

Remote Login allows you to ssh into the computer over port 22. You are logged in as a user and can do anything that user could do on the machine, via command line interface.
File sharing allows connections via afp (Apple Filing Protocol) or smb/cifs (Server Message Block/Common Internet File System)

  • File sharing question

I have been trying to set up file sharing so i can access my files on my g5 desktop, with my macboook.
I store my movies on my desktop (G5) and am planing to just run a cable to my living room since i have set my macbook to play movies on my TV. what is the best way to set this up, i have tryed doing it wireless and it just laggs and is a hassle to try to log in. so i bought a crossover ethernet cable but realized i only have one input on the back of my G5 and that is being used by my internet.
so what is the easiest painless way to set up file sharing in my preferences.
is their another cable i can transfer files through other then a ethernet maybe a usb, or firewire?
how would you go about simplifying you file transfers?
and can i set up my front row to recognize files shared from desktop, on my macbook?
    thanks for your feedback.

    hey thanks for your reply.
i think im going to attempt using a router and all the existing ethernet cables i have.
but once i have set up file sharing in system preferences, how do I access it? the other computer shows up in my finder menu but it never actually connects, it just says connecting......
even when i hit connect as it does nothing.

  • Basic File Sharing question between user accounts on my iMac

I don't understand how to be able to share and download to one common folder among User Accounts on my iMac. I am trying to use a Clean Account as a test, and wanted to copy a file I downloaded from the web in one account into this clean account folder, and install the file.
I went to Sharing and thought I turn File Sharing on. Logged into the Clean account and Apple+I the folder, changing access priviledges to the folder. Then copy the file into the Clean User Account.
But it doesn't work that way. Can anyone help me understand sharing between accounts?

File Sharing is for sharing files between two different machines, not between different accounts on the same machine. If you want to share files on one machine, you just need to put them in a folder everyone has access to, like the /Users/shared folder. Also, don't go fooling around with folder permissions... that's a good way to mess things up. If I had a nickel for every time someone messed up their system using the "Apply to enclosed items" option when changing permissions, I'd be a rich man!

  • Transferring Files via File Sharing from 10.4.11 to 10.8.5

I am trying to get all of my files and information off of my laptop and migrate them to my new iMac. I have followed the instructions in regards for file sharing. However, when I bring up the finder and click on shared, the only thing that it will do is log me in as a guest. When I try and type in the password to log me in as a registered user it tells me that the password is wrong. Unless there is another password that I am unaware of I am 100% sure that I remember the password. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to Print via File Sharing

I have a laser printer connected via USB to my iMac and my wife prints from
her MacBook Pro via Printer Sharing over our wireless LAN. We now have an
iPad and it cannot detect a printer on the network because the printer is hard
    wire to the iMac.
Anyway to train the iPad to look for printer connected to another Mac on the
    LAN?

I think this is the easiest option, and it worked great for me!
    http://howto.wired.com/wiki/PrintWith_Any_Printer_From_iPad,iPhone
Keep in mind, the app wants you to be running OSX 10.6.5, and iTunes 10.1, and will ask you if you want to continue if those specifications are not met.
I am running 10.6.7, and iTunes 10.2.1 and this install still worked great. I just decided to continue the installation after being prompted, and everything works.

  • ITunes File Sharing question

I really like the reader, mainly because it's uncomplicated an uncluttered, but I'm having a problem with importing files into it. I opened a .pdf from an eMail with the option open with Adobe Reader and the file is now on the list in the iPad app. When I sync with iTunes the file is not listed in the file sharing section under the adobe reader app. Is it meant to be like this? I thought files imorted into the iPad app from email attachements would show up on that list under the corresponding app, that's the app you open the attachment with?
And since I'm already writing this, I'd like to second the feature request for additional organization options, like folder creation, file moving and renaming on the file list screen.
    Thanks!

File opened from email is stored in the Inbox folder of your app. itunes does not support browsing through the Inbox ( or any other folder). Hence, you did not find the file in the file-list.
Thanks for the feature request. We will try to add this functionality in the future release(s) of Adobe Reader.

  • HT201301 How do I send an audio file via file sharing to other Mac and PC users instead of email?

I have created an audio file on iTalk and want to email it to my family. The file size is 25.62 MB.- too large to email it ( limit 5MB)  Would file sharing be a better solution and if so what are the steps I should take to get started?

You might try Dropbox for iPad and computer.  Both are free and include 2GB free storage.

  • Apache access to private files, security question . . .

could someone explain how to keep files hidden from the
public but still available to be read by apache server. my website
appears to have the www root under a public_html file, which makes
sense, since that's where a lot of the display pages are, but if
the root is public, how can you be certain that admin pages are
secure, even if they are in a password protected file?

The Apache server can read files from anywhere in the
    filesystem it has
access to, including above the public_html/ directory. On
    many
systems, you'll find public_html's physical location to be
    something
like /home/username/public_html/. A lot of systems are set up
    such
that, say, a cgi directory on that same system would be
/home/username/cgi-bin/. The server uses those files, even
    though
    they're outside the site root.
I think that your actual question might be how to password
    protect a
page or a directory? In that case, it depends on how secure
    you want
it and on how many username/password pairs you want. If it's
    only a
few, look into using htaccess/htpasswd; if it's more than
    that,
Dreamweaver's Help files (F1) have information about setting
    up
    password-protected pages.

  • Copying files via File Sharing, files get locked

    Hey, Folks!
I've just begun sharing files from my Mac Pro with my wife's laptop. I have no problems dragging-and-dropping files from one computer to another, but the copied folders are locked, meaning, for example, if I put a video file into iTunes, I'm unable to change its metadata (i.e. change it from a "Home Movie" to a "Music Video"). I've tried some variations to no avail.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!

So, in Airport Utility, I go to "Wireless" and then "Option", and I get a dialog box with following options:
Name of 5Ghz network, Country, radio Mode (802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n (automatic)
and Finally Canal 2,4 GHz : Automatic
    and Canal 5GHz : Automatic
Do I have to change these values ?
And after that, do I have to change something to my network preferences ?
