Accessing draw & paint AppleWorks docs on a MacBook

I recently bought a MacBook running 10.4.11, upgrading from a lime clamshell iBook running OS 9.2.2. On the latter, I used AppleWorks 6 for all of my graphic design and graphics editing needs. I have hundreds of files of clip art that I accessed with AppleWorks 6 (though that is not what format they are in), and many, many files I created using AppleWorks 6.
I cannot install AppleWorks 6 on the MacBook (when I click on the installer, it says it cannot run on this OS). So, my options are... what? Do I buy AppleWorks 6.2 and it will work on this MacBook and work as AppleWorks 6 did? Is there are program that came with my MacBook that will allow me to access all this clipart in various formats, as well as open and edit the artwork I created on AppleWorks 6?
Very frustrating...

Hi JC,
You will need AppleWorks 6.2.4 or AppleWorks 6.2.9 to run well on the MacBook and Tiger.
You should be able to obtain AW 6.2.4 from Mac Hardcore.
Although the AW 6 version on your iBook may not run on your MacBook, it can be updated to 6.2.9 before (or after) transferring it to the newer machine.
You can download the updater from this page. Note that the updater comes in several language versions, including two English versions. The one at the top of the list is the International English version. The US/North American English version is the link in the upper right corner of the page identified only by file size (15.8 MB).
To transfer AppleWorks to the MacBook requires only moving the entire AppleWorks 6 folder and its contents into the Applications folder on the MacBook via ethernet, a CD, or a flash drive. Do NOT transfer associated files (eg. preferences files). AppleWorks will create new, clean versions of these as it needs them.
Note that the AppleWorks User Licence authorises installation on only one computer at a time. To remain within the terms of the licence, you should delete the AW 6 folder from the old machine after making the transfer.

Barry

  • Pages -- how do I access, convert AppleWorks docs?

Hello.  I have numerous AppleWorks docs which, I conveniently found out after upgrading to Yosemite, will not open.  I downloaded Pages -- which also refuses to recognize docs created by Apple's prior word processing software.  So how can I access these docs, convert them to Pages-recognizable docs?  Thank you.

The only way to deal with this is either use the iWork '09 n.3 applications on Yosemite, or install LibreOffice, which will open these files. From the LibreOffice installer, drag and drop it into /Applications. RIght click on the LibreOffice icon, and open. In the open dialog, choose open again. Drag the LibreOffice icon to your Dock and drop. Drag/drop your AppleWorks documents on the LibreOffice Dock icon.
LibreOffice is an MS Office replacement suite.

  • Can't open old AppleWorks files on new MacBook Pro w/Snow Leopard

Just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro, did the migration from my old (2 yrs) MacBook via FireWire. Many of the old application icons are not appearing in my Dock, just Question marks ???. When I click on a ?, it indicates the name of that app which was there on the old MacBook, but there's no icon & I can't open the app from there. I can't find my Adobe Reader app, & several others, on the hard drive. Maybe I can find a work around for those....
BUT - zillions of files in the old AppleWorks/ClarisWorks files open in sometimes unreadable text, with all formatting gone. I NEED these files!! Please help!!

Thanks for your reply. When I try opening an AppleWorks documents with Pages as you suggested I get the message that the AppleWorks document is damaged.
Ahh...then it may actually be damaged. All of my old AppleWorks docs (word-processing docs) are opening just fine with Pages. On the other hand, if the AW doc is a drawing or database doc then Pages might not be able to open it. If the AW doc is a spreadsheet, it might open with Numbers.
Would you suggest that I use Migration Assistant to transfer my older files from my iMac to my MacBook (rather than using the thumb drive?) Will it ask me about overwriting files? My concern is that it may erase some changes to newer versions of documents that were on the thumb drive.
I do have the installation disk for my MacBook and all disks for the iMac.
No, If you still have your AppleWorks installation disk, I would suggest installing it and trying to open the 'damaged' docs that way. Later, if an item won't open in Pages but will open in AW, then resave it in AW as a generic format that Pages will open. In this way you can move these docs from the now unsupported AW and into Pages format. If we wait too long, we may not be able to install AW at some point in the future and then your old docs will be orphaned.

  • Appleworks Docs

My Mum has a load of old Appleworks docs from a backup I made to CD some time ago. Since she suffered a Hard Drive failure a while ago and I'm trying to help her get things back to normal. So far I've had no joy trying to get Appleworks up and running on her OS X machine with new hard drive - it seems like catch 22, however for now my question is around iWork pages. We've reinstalled it from the CD, and all the documentation I can find says it should open Mum's old Appleworks 6 WP docs but iWorks steadfastly refuses to open any of them - is this right or am I missing something?

Another thing to try: click on an AW file in the Finder then Cmnd+I (Get Info) and under Open With choose, or navigate to, Pages. Then choose Change All. Now every time you double click on an AW file it should open in Pages. However, Pages can only open word processing and spreadsheet files, not Draw or Paint files.
For more details, do a search for Open AppleWorks and you’ll find many answers to questions that may arise as you continue this project.

  • Appleworks docs and compatibility with iWorks application?

Appleworks docs and compatibility with iWorks application? Does it exists? I do not have iWorks and will soon be upgrading my op sys to 10.4 (it really is in the mail) I currentl have 10.2.8
I use AppleWorks a great deal. Does iWorks replace it? or enhance it?
Will AppleWorks be upgraded or is 6.2.9 the last iteration?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions SYGWS
iWork (no "s") is not an application, but the name given to the package of two applications, Keynote & Pages.
Keynote is a presentation application that can open AppleWorks 6 presentation files & PowerPoint files. I haven't use Keynote other than to view a few presentation. You probably can find a lot of information by searching the Keynote forum.
Pages is the word processing/page layout application in iWork. Pages is able to open AppleWorks 6 word processing document as well as Word, text & RTF documents. It is not able to open any other AppleWorks documents or older Word documents (I'm not sure how far back it goes). Pages 1 (iWork '05) will not display floating spreadsheet frames in AppleWorks 6 word processing documents, Pages 2 can. Pages 2 has limited spreadsheet functions available in tables (as does Keynote 3, both in iWork '06). Pages can export as PDF, Word, plain text, RTF & HTML (HTML export is disappointing to say the least). It cannot export as AppleWorks (any version).
No one here knows for sure if AppleWorks will ever get another update & those that do have signed non-disclosure agreements, but it is extremely unlikely. In the iWork ’05 press release iWork is said to be "building the successor to AppleWorks."
Many users here, like me, use Pages for what it does so well & AppleWorks for what it does that iWork doesn't (at least not yet) - databases, spreadsheets & drawing.

  • AppleWorks doc won't open in Pages

I have a new iMac Intel with iWork.  My old G3 had AppleWorks 6. I had a crash on the G3, and lost all my data. However, I had most of it backed up to cd's.
When I try to open one of the AW6 doc's, Keyote opens and tells me it can't open the doc. Can someone tell me how to get Pages to open instead of Keynote?
    Thanks,
    Old Granny Lola

It doesn't seem to matter if I have Pages open or
not, Keynote still opens with the same message.
Having Pages open makes no difference.
Don't double-click the file to open it. As you've discovered this will cause Keynote to start.
    Instead:
    * start Pages,
    * select its File > Open menu,
    * from the Open dialog box locate an AppleWorks word processing document
    * click the Open button.
    I'm
about ready to go into my HD and trash Keynote to see
if that would help or re-install my AppleWorks 6.
Installing AppleWorks 6 might be a good idea regardless. You will be able to open any AppleWorks documents (Pages only opens word processing documents).
Yesterday, I was able to open some of my AW
documents with Pages, I don't know what happened.
The only thing I did this morning was to change my
password on my machine back to what it was on my old
G3, thinking that may have something to do with not
being able to access the old AW docs with Pages.
This shouldn't have anything to do with the problem. AppleWorks doesn't rely on the Mac OS X user's password for anything.

  • Appleworks docs conversion to indesign ? possible ?

Question is how best to convert appleworks docs to indesign. I am going from a macpro with older software to an intel base macbook pro and will be using new software of course.  Is the best or only way to convert appleworks to microsoft word and then to indesign. Is microsoft word neccessary or is there another option? Much thanks,
                      Will

Word Processing documents can only be Saved As a limited range of formats, including Rich Text and a few versions of Word, the latest being 2007. If your document is formatted text without the layout being important then Rich Text could probably be imported into InDesign (with which I'm not familiar): otherwise you will have to do it via Word (and if your formatting is complicated it may not survive entirely accurately).
Other types of documents are more problematic: you may find this article helpful -

  • Drawing/Paint App for Mac Mini?

I miss AppleWorks. Not for  iPad, not for iPhone, just here on my MacMini, I need a drawing/painting app. Free if possible. I need to create a pic of what my visual disturbance looks like to show to a Doctor. There are a few other drawings I'd like to make, but this one is important.

There's really nothing like AppleWorks' drawing/painting modules but for drawing, Intaglio comes pretty close. For painting I don't know of any Mac native program that is close but you might want to look at iPaint, SumoPaint, or SketchPad - all of which are online paint programs.

  • Does appleworks come with my MacBook?

I'm a little confused, I thought appleworks came with my macbook, but it's not on here. only the microsoft office test drive which is expired and notebook. But on my parents imac they have appleworks..what happened?

    Hi
You could always purchase the Appleworks 6.2.9 CD from Amazon. Apple are more interested in developing Pages (iWork). I, personally, use NeoOffice.

  • How do I access iwork for ios docs stored in icloud on all ios devices

How do I access ios-iwork icloud docs on all my ios devices?
ios 7.1.2 on all ios devices. Have zero access to my icloud docs on mobile devices since ios 7.0.

Make sure you are signed in to iCloud using the same AppleID as used for the files.
Settings app > iCloud > Documents&Data. Make sure each of the iWorks apps is turned on.
Go to the settings for each app and make sure (Use iCloud)
For 2 or 3 above, if they are already on, turn them off and then back on.

If it works through the Ethernet port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) it probably has nothing to do with the AEBS. There must be something about the configuration of the computer connecting wirelessly.

  • Drawing/painting in exactly coordinates

Hello , I have got a litle questions.
Can I draw/paint(pictures , or add regular components) on exactly coordinates on the frame?
    I mean something like
    frame.add(myButton , 500 , 300); (Height and width in the frame)
    or something like that....
    Hope you understand me.

I really don't recommend using the absolute placement technique.
What if you resize your window? Your components will not adjust, as they would with a LayoutManager. You can accomplish pretty much everything you'd need to do with absolute placement with the appropriate LayoutManagers.
